During the Cold War Sweden outwardly maintained its neutrality, however from the 1960s the U.S. secretly promised to provide military force in aid of Sweden in case of Soviet aggression. As part of the military cooperation, the U.S. provided much help in the development of the Saab 37 Viggen aircraft. I spoke with Benke, a former Swedish Air Force pilot who flew the Viggen. He shares his path to becoming a pilot in the Air Force, the intricacies of flight training, encounters with Soviet aircraft during the Cold War, and the unique challenges faced by the Swedish Air Force. Episodentext für den Podcast „Ring frei“, Folge 34: In dieser Folge von Ring frei sprechen wir mit Carsten Benke, dem Referatsleiter für Stadtentwicklung, Regional- und Verkehrspolitik beim Zentralverband des Deutschen Handwerks, über die Herausforderungen, die Handwerksbetriebe im urbanen Raum durch die aktuelle Verkehrspolitik und Stadtplanung erleben. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, wie städtische Umgestaltungen und die Verkehrswende – insbesondere die Schaffung von mehr Fahrradwegen und die Umwidmung von Parkflächen – den Handwerkssektor betreffen. Behnke geht detailliert darauf ein, wie Handwerksbetriebe und deren Mobilitätsbedürfnisse in der Debatte oft unterrepräsentiert sind, obwohl sie für das tägliche Leben in der Stadt unverzichtbar sind. Er erklärt, dass viele Handwerksbetriebe, die etwa Reparaturen, Installationen oder Renovierungen durchführen, auf eine verlässliche und gut erreichbare Infrastruktur angewiesen sind – von Parkplätzen bis zu Ladezonen. Doch zunehmend verschwinden diese, da mehr Flächen für den privaten PKW-Verkehr oder Radwege reserviert werden. Dies führt zu einer immer schwierigeren Situation für Handwerker, die oft keine Möglichkeit haben, ihre Fahrzeuge nahe an ihren Arbeitsorten abzustellen. Während nach geltendem Straßenverkehrsrecht private KfZ Vorrang haben, bleibt die Infrastruktur für Handwerker oftmals unzureichend. Dies betrifft nicht nur die klassischen Handwerksbetriebe wie Elektriker, Tischler oder Heizungsinstallateure, sondern auch mobile Dienstleistungen wie Pflegedienste oder Reparaturdienste, die in Städten eine zentrale Rolle spielen. Die Folge beleuchtet auch die historische Dimension der städtischen Planung: Behnke erklärt, wie das Handwerk über Jahrzehnte aus der Stadt verdrängt wurde. Diese Entwicklung hat dazu geführt, dass in vielen deutschen Städten die Mischung von Wohnen, Gewerbe und Handwerk nicht mehr selbstverständlich ist. Behnke erklärt, dass es bislang an den nötigen rechtlichen Instrumenten fehlt, die es Städten ermöglichen, Gewerbefahrzeugen gezielt Parkflächen zuzuweisen. Der ZDH setzt sich daher für eine Reform des Straßenverkehrsrechts ein, um eine gerechtere Nutzung des öffentlichen Raums zu ermöglichen. In Städten wie Paris und Kopenhagen wird bereits seit Jahren schrittweise der Straßenraum neu verteilt – von mehr Radwegen bis hin zu temporären Parkflächen für Lieferverkehr. Behnke erläutert, wie diese Städte durch eine ausgewogene Verkehrsplanung den Bedürfnissen von Handwerkern und anderen Gewerbetreibenden gerecht werden und dabei gleichzeitig den Klimaschutz und die Mobilität der Zukunft fördern. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Janine La Salle from UC Davis about her work on differential methylated regions in autism spectrum disorders. In our discussion, Janine LaSalle highlights her work on the placental epigenetic signature, which offers insights into the impact of fetal exposures and gene-environment interactions during the perinatal period. She emphasizes the placenta's value as a surrogate tissue for understanding human diseases. Her research on DNA methylation in the placenta across different mammalian species reveals consistent patterns in partially methylated and highly methylated domains. She explains the critical role of higher methylation levels in specific regions for gene expression and how this knowledge helps trace the placenta's developmental history. The conversation then delves into Dr. LaSalle's research on the link between placental DNA methylation and autism. Through epigenome-wide association studies, she discovered a novel autism gene and explored the effects of prenatal exposures on DNA methylation profiles. Additionally, she discusses the impact of maternal obesity on offspring neurodevelopment. Friday night will be one of the earliest times in a season that Covington Catholic and Highlands will renew their football rivalry. But, it also happens on a night when the kickoff will happen an hour later than normal (8 p.m.) due to the expected heat index. Even as the teams adjust practice schedules this week to the heat, there is plenty of anticipation building for Friday night at David Cecil Memorial Stadium. "It's going to be a really exciting game and we're all really getting ready," Highlands senior quarterback Brody Benke said. "It's just different. Everyone feels more locked in and practice is way more intense. Everyone is ready for Friday to come." Benke, senior tight end/defensive end Luke Schneider along with Highlands coach Bob Sphire joined the WCPO High School Insider Podcast to discuss Friday's game against CovCath. "Great football team; it ought to be a killer game," Sphire said. "It ought to be a classic follow-up. They just won against a really, really good football team in Ryle. They do such a great job. (CovCath coach) Eddie (Eviston) is a really good ball coach. He'll have them obviously ready." Highlands (1-0) defeated host Lexington Catholic 34-27 Aug. 18. Benke was 12 of 17 passing for 194 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed 19 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns. He also had two receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown. Schneider had two sacks on defense. CovCath (1-0) defeated visiting Ryle 37-22 Aug. 18. The Colonels held a 20-0 first-quarter lead against Ryle. Senior quarterback Evan Pitzer was 17 of 24 passing for 271 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for a touchdown. Senior running back Owen Leen had 16 carries for 96 yards and three touchdowns. Corporate futurists made a living with their imaginations. These professional prognosticators spent their time looking at the world around them, observing its apparent changes and trends, and reporting to business and political leaders proscribed methods for interpreting and preparing for the future. Dr. Gavin Benke, senior lecturer at Boston University, dug into multiple Hagley Library collections, including those of the Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Manufacturers, and Conference Board, to explore the careers and influence of twentieth-century corporate futurists. Beginning in the 1960s, corporate futurists extrapolated from social trends to predict a future business environment where people would demand a higher level of service from corporations, and turn to corporations for leadership, structure, and meaning in the post-national world economy then developing. Whereas during the 1970s this vision found eager listeners in major American corporations, trade associations, and perhaps especially among politicians, its practical impacts were limited. By the 1980s, what influence corporate futurists possessed had ebbed away following the triumphant union of neoliberal economic and neoconservative politics, which they had markedly failed to predict. Nevertheless, the corporate futurists provide a unique window into the historically situated worlds of business and planning.
