In my professional career, I never thought I would see the day when people would be able to hide their crimes behind their stupidity and wallets. But it's happening right before our eyes, and I'm not so sure we can put this genie back in the proverbial bottle! Affluenza is a 'Coverup Crime' for rich snobs. affluenza - a psychological malaise supposedly affecting wealthy young people, symptoms of which include a lack of motivation, feelings of guilt, and a sense of isolation. As a legal or psychiatric term, “affluenza” has no standing. But there’s a growing body of research that “sometimes poor little rich kids really are poor little rich kids.” although former Stanford University student Brock Turner was convicted in March on three felony counts—assault with intent to commit rape of an intoxicated or unconscious person, sexual penetration of an intoxicated person, and sexual penetration of an unconscious person—it didn't end up being the justice his victim was hoping for. In total those charges carry a maximum ten-year sentence. Following impassioned pleas regarding Turner's character and his potential Olympic swimming career, now dashed, he was sentenced to six months in county jail. "A prison sentence would have a severe impact on him. I think he will not be a danger to others," Judge Aaron Persky said in his decision. In December 2013, State District Judge Jean Boyd sentenced a teenager from Texas, Ethan Couch to 10 years' probation for driving under the influence and killing (murdering) four pedestrians and injuring 11 after his attorneys successfully argued that the teen suffered from affluenza and needed rehabilitation, and not prison. The lawyers had argued that Couch was unable to understand the consequences of his actions because of his financial privilege. We are now starting to see this as not only a defense against light-way crimes like drunk driving and shop-lifting, but how about rape and murder! So now if you have a bulging wallet, you can also claim that you have a bulging ego that affords you all kinds of leeway to commit crimes. To say the least, I am a little hot on this one... as you'll see on the show today.
