AmericanaFest Showcase artist Cris Jacobs joins us on the show to talk about his recently released album, “One of These Days,” and how making it was like returning home. We chat about embracing the good and bad of the songwriting process and learning to be comfortable with imperfection.    Cris Jacobs lost his way. Most of us do. Part of the story is in those lost days. But more of the story is in what we find again.   For Jacobs, the last several years have been hard—and transformative. With a vote of confidence from a legend, a no. 2 pencil and scratchpad, and his acoustic guitar, he went into his barn to write and emerged with his finest album to date.  Produced by Jerry Douglas, “One of These Days” is a stunning collection of storytelling and song, rooted in bluegrass, folk and blues, but unencumbered by rules and expectations. The Infamous Stringdusters serve as the album's rollicking house band, joined by friends including Billy Strings, Sam Bush, Lee Ann Womack, the McCrary Sisters, Lindsay Lou and more. The result is unfettered, joyful virtuosity, swirling around Jacobs' powerful voice, gut-check meditations, and close-up character sketches.     See Cris at AmericanaFest:   Wednesday, September 18th a the AmericanaFest DayStage presented by NPR Music, World Café and WMOT  Friday, September 20th at his official showcaseat 11:00 PM    And check him out here:  Website: Crisjacobs.com  Instagram: Cris_jacobs  Facebook: Cris Jacobs  YouTube: @crisjacobs6183

Episode 287: Cris Jacobs has been tagged the “King of Baltimore rock and roll” by a leading local publication, but a quick look at his catalog and certainly his newest album suggests that and more. He made his name as a guitarist, songwriter and singer with The Bridge, a soulful jam band that toured the nation and overseas between 2000 and 2010. His solo projects have been well regarded, but he's not been a force in Americana until recently. After a bit of a mid-life crisis, he turned to his first love - bluegrass - and pulled together a wonderful album called One Of These Days, with the Infamous Stringdusters as his band and Jerry Douglas as his producer. It landed Cris a debut on the Grand Ole Opry. How did he get here? We find out. Also in the hour, some of my recent catch-up with roots power couple Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams.

Every so often, a conversation tilts the axis of your day—this chat with Cris Jacobs about his new album, 'One of These Days,' is one of those rare gems. On the cusp of its release, Cris unfolds the narrative of this deeply personal project, from tapping into the raw emotions of the pandemic to rekindling his bluegrass heritage. It's a tale woven with the threads of collaboration, as talents like Billy Strings and LeAnn Womack lend their voices, enriching the tapestry of sound that Cris and the Infamous Stringdusters bring to life in the studio. Their collective energy pulses through the stories shared, a heartbeat that underscores the transformative nature of music in both the creator's and listener's life. What happens when the comforting clasp of guitar strings leads to healing? As Cris recounts, the gentle nudge from Jerry Douglas to embrace his bluegrass roots became a gateway to therapeutic discovery and unveiling the art of album-making—sans written songs. It's a space where mental health walks hand-in-hand with melodic expression, where authenticity isn't just a buzzword but the core of Cris' musical rejuvenation. The intimate interplay of fatherhood and the music industry's rigors also gets its due, offering a glimpse into the balancing act that shapes an artist's world. Ending on an anticipatory note, we ponder Cris' upcoming plans, from his involvement in the enchanting Sojourn in Porto with the great Matt Butler to the excitement of sharing 'One of These Days' with eager ears. The chat becomes a reflection pool of support and camaraderie within the music community, a reminder of how it sustains us in the ebbs and flows of life. This episode, laden with laughter, revelations, and the warmth of familial interruptions, invites you to witness the joy that springs from the heart of making music. We've waited five years for noted singer songwriter Cris Jacobs to release new music. Fortunately his latest effort “One of These Days” is now available  wherever you buy and listen to music and it's one of my favourites of the year so far. Backed by the Infamous Stringdusters and produced by Jerry Douglas, the new album is a blend of rock, soul, gospel and of course bluegrass. Great Chat with Mark Brown of Hambone Relay. Mark talks about his music, move to the west coast and meeting Neal Evans. With elements of blues, jazz, funk and rock & roll, Hambone Relay redefines the modern organ trio with their unique brand of improvisational jam music. Since their founding in 2012, the band has played between 75-100 shows a year and have shared the stage with such great bands as Melvin Seals and JGB, Cris Jacobs, The James Hunter 6 and New Orleans legends Rebirth Brass Band. The band was founded in 2012 by organist Mark Brown. He began his career playing keyboards with the Baltimore-based jam band The Bridge. The band began playing a handful of shows and festivals and started to gain some recognition in the area. This would eventually lead to them recording their first album. The self-titled LP would feature 8 brand new original songs and 2 covers recorded live. This first album featured Devin Coleman on guitar and Kyle Moken on drums. On February 16, 2018, Hambone Relay played WXPN's “Free At Noon” concert to a packed house at World Cafe Live. John Udinsky had left the band and Luke Ferracone of The Groove Merchants had taken his place. The band shared the stage with British R&B singer James Hunter which would lead to a short tour in supporting The James Hunter 6 playing City Winery in New York City and MusikFest Cafe in Bethlehem, PA. Following this successful run, the band would hit the road for the rest of 2018 growing and writing new music along the way. In early 2021, the band relocated to Los Angeles and continues to record and play shows on both coasts. More dates are being released frequently and new music is currently in the works, set for release in 2021 and 2022. Their live shows are a mixture of danceable grooves, psychedelic overtones and improvisational jams. www.rocknrollfridays.com

“I like to say that I make the world's finest razors pure and simple. I hand-turn wooden razor handles that fit modern cartridges like Gillette, Schick, and double edge blades. I'm still trying to get in Dollar Shave Club in Harry's but I'm so small, they don't know I exist yet. But one day, that's a good goal to have. I've always been a woodworker. More as a hobby. I was a social worker for 10 years in Maryland and I would come home every night stressed out from doing paperwork and meetings all day. The only way I could decompress was to go into my workshop in the basement, a very small basement and I started off doing the typical tables, shelves, things like that. Then I found woodturning and I absolutely loved it. I started making bowls, pins, various spindle things. I made some Harry Potter ones for my nieces. It's just relaxing. It's kind of an intuitive tool. I made a razor because I was looking for a double edge razor and I couldn't find one except in an antique store and they were usually pitted and in bad shape. I just couldn't find one. So I said you know what, I'm going to turn a wooden handle on a lathe and I'm going to somehow attach a double edge blade to it and I figured it out. I made one a friend saw it said “Will you make me one?” and my hobby turned into a very, very part-time business,” says Dan Janssen, Owner, and Founder of Imperium Shaving.Dan has accomplished many things in his career including his time as a social worker but the meat of his career is when he started this shaving business. It started as selling razors here and there to his friends and now he is selling them all over the nation. People are looking for unique options when buying local and razors is certainly a unique craft. To learn more about Dan's craft, visit his website, Instagram and Facebook. To learn more about the featured musician, Cris Jacobs, visit his website, Instagram and Facebook. “Congratulations, You've Practiced A Lot” By Cris Jacobs I took a few lessons when I first started out, with some guys who spun me up and sent me on my way. After that I did lots of shedding in the bedroom and lots of listening. I've never been one to shun away from the theory, and the language and learning, but I was never a music school guy. From the beginning I was drawn to the improvisational aspect of music. I knew that I was going to need to learn - and you can read all the books in the world and gain as much knowledge about things as you want - but nobody wants to listen to somebody whose just regurgitating other peoples information, without lending something positive to the conversation. ‘Congratulations, you've practiced a lot.' That doesn't do it for me, you need to take it a step beyond. I've always kept that in mind and wanted to use technique as a means to an end, rather than the end itself. I came to that realization early on, luckily. Not going to music school as well, and coming at it from the songwriter side of things, I never saw myself being the most dazzling guitar player on the planet, or really wanting to be that. I just wanted to be able to be good enough to have my own voice. Then developing that voice is the journey, and the chops and technique are the maintenance of that journey.

Not one to shy away from political discussions or even in song form, Cris covers all of this in his music and in conversation. But first Granville Automatics Vanessa Olivarez and Elizabeth Elkins drop some dark history nuggets from their latest record Radio Hymns. Cris Jacobs guitarist and vocalist from The Bridge were a band from Baltimore, Maryland that called it quits 10 years after forming. Since then Cris released his critically acclaimed albums Dust To Gold and a collaborative album with Ivan Neville, Neville Jacobs. Cris and I dive into a chunk of his catalog but first, we talk about The Bridge and it's jam band roots. Then even why after 10 years, what's it like to venture out on your own and handle change. Color Where You Are, has some noticeable changes in songwriting. This isn't lost on Cris. Cris Jacobs has been on our radar since his 2016 record Dust to Gold, because, well, it was awesome. Cris is as eclectic as he talented. That is to say, both are diverse and interesting. It's hard to peg this singer-songwriter down, because although his music is true to an Americana, country tradition, the dude has soul and is equally adept at writing love songs as he is at writing beautiful stories of the human condition. Certainly the latter is of great concern these days, given the socio political climate. He paints his words with an eloquent brush full of meaning, and his musical chops, and those of his band, enhance his works real charm. Hans Christian Anderson once said, “Where words fail, music speaks.” And from the moment you hear Jordan August’s music, one thing is certain…it speaks. From his heart and his soul. No matter the stage, venue or crowd size, Jordan always delivers the same deeply rooted passion and energy. Growing up in a musical family, Motown and soul were the dominant sounds throughout his childhood. In his teens and early 20s, his evolving interests led him to folk singers and songwriters. Influenced by fellow Baltimore musician Cris Jacobs, and blues revivalist, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jordan’s drive and talent helped him quickly mature from a backing musician to a front-man and soloist. A Baltimore City native, who also spent four years in Philadelphia, city life has been the inspiration behind both Jordan’s music and lyrics. From his first note to his last, you can actually feel the grit, grind and glamour of city life captured in the emotion of every song. Jordan’s debut album, “Sunday Morning,” portrays his unique spin on life and living in Baltimore. Drawing inspiration from artists like The Lone Bellow, The Lumineers and Chris Stapleton, the album captures the arc of Jordan's story in an eclectic sonic presentation.

Cris Jacobs knocks back a bourbon to stave off a cold before his show at American Beauty in NYC. After noodling around on acid in his backyard with friends in high school, Cris dedicated his college years to practicing bluegrass guitar for five hours a day. It paid off, with Jacobs spending a decade in Baltimore jamband The Bridge before going solo. Cris explains how becoming a father influenced his stunning sophomore effort, Dust to Gold, and shares his plans for an upcoming LP with Ivan Neville. crisjacobs.com drypaintsigns.com
