Ben Vaughn Talks All Things Music

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 9, 2024 27:25

Born in Mount Ephraim, New Jersey, Vaughn grew up in Collingswood, New Jersey, outside Philadelphia.[2][3] At age 6, his uncle gave him a Duane Eddy record and forever changed his life. He started playing the drums in a garage band when he was 12, then transitioned to the guitar. After school, he would go to a local department store, where he would borrow the guitars and practice over chord sheets.[4] He attended Audubon High School.[1]In 1983, he formed the Ben Vaughn Combo. The band was together for five years, releasing two albums and touring the U.S. several times. They received rave reviews in Rolling Stone and People magazines as well as video airplay on MTV. The attention inspired Marshall Crenshaw to record Vaughn's "I'm Sorry (But So Is Brenda Lee)" for his Downtown album. Vaughn embarked on a solo career in 1988, recording several critically acclaimed albums, touring extensively in Europe and the U.S., and receiving more MTV exposure. During that period he produced three records for the Elektra Records American Explorer series (Memphis rockabilly legend Charlie Feathers, Muscle Shoals country soul singer Arthur Alexander) and recorded "Cubist Blues" a collaboration with Alan Vega and Alex Chilton. He also scored two films (Favorite Mopar and Wild Girl's Go-Go Rama), as well as appeared as a frequent guest commentator on nationally syndicated radio shows Fresh Air and World Cafe. In 1995, Vaughn moved to L.A. and released "Instrumental Stylings," an album of instrumentals in a variety of styles. A guest appearance on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" led directly to being hired as the composer for the hit TV sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. That '70s Show soon followed, and for the next ten years, Vaughn would provide music for a dozen other TV shows and pilots (Men Behaving Badly, Normal, Ohio, Grounded for Life). He also provided scores for several films (Psycho Beach Party, The Independent, Scorpion Spring) and continued producing records (Ween, Los Straitjackets, Mark Olson of the Jayhawks, Nancy Sinatra, and the Swingers soundtrack CD). Support the Show. It's Rock 'n' Roll Fridays!FacebookYoutubeInstagramWebsite Got a Great Musical Story? Great interview with David Downham, owner of The Gradwell House Studios.Yes, it was originally a house with a basement studio/DIY show space in Maple Shade NJ on W. Gradwell Ave. The studio has since occupied a chop shop in Gloucester City (2002-2004), some slumlord's leaky-roofed shit-hole on Atlantic ave in Haddon Heights (2004-2016) and our new wonderful and permanent home just around the corner in a repurposed, custom designed and built Masonic Lodge (Lodge 191 Y'all) on Station Ave in downtown Haddon Heights, NJ.The original basement location was in Steve Poponi's (co-owner) rented Maple Shade, NJ home for 4 long . . . carpet-remnant-wall-covered, does-that-band-own-a-tuner, Samson-mixer-having, pj-whelihans-chicken-caesar-salad-clogging-up-the-utility-sink-right-behind-my-mix-position-smelling years. After Steve's move to the Gloucester City chop-shop location Dave Downham entered the picture as a sparkly blue-eyed second engineer. Coming from his own soon-to-be defunct Cherry Hill NJ "Couches in the Desert" basement studio Dave and Steve became 50/50 partners.  In addition to recording horrible bands (it was 2004, think high school Metalcore bands) and a couple good ones (really just Sugar Queef), the Gloucester location also continued to host live shows for touring bands (pretend there is an epic list here) and tons of local garbage. The limitations of this space and bondo dust in the air as well as the junkyard dogs and the prostitute-sidewalk-highway and the both-my-landlords-went-to-jail-1-month-after-we-signed-our-lease got Steve and Dave looking to move The Gradwell House again thus bringing them to Haddon Heights, NJ. The original Haddon Heights location was built with recording bands "live" in mind, and after 12 leaky-roofed years in this rented location, the limitations of this space once again got them looking to relocate, this time to buy! In 2016 The Gradwell House opened its permanent home, a custom built, wonderfully flexible, 6000 square foot music facility in downtown Haddon Heights.SUBSCRIBE TO ROCK 'N' FRIDAYS PODCAST!https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEvn_21MsmWSK7fqOPNLjJA/videos

Great interview with Peter Brown of Loudo Guitars. At 14, he took apart his Squire Stratocaster, and then hastily reassembled it when he saw his mom's reaction. It wasn't until Brown discovered the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery in Phoenix, Arizona, that he finally found his calling. At Roberto Venn, Brown trained himself to work long hours, performing complicated technical guitar repairs and honing in on elements of instrument design. He began to form his own theories about the craft of guitar-making, and set out to explore some of its mysteries.“In the guitar industry, there's a whole lot of mojo with how things work,” Brown said. “People know a little bit, and whatever you can't explain becomes mojo. It seems to be one of those ways people sell stuff.“I see it as a science,” he said. “If your mechanic tried to sell you on mojo, you wouldn't take your car there.”One of them took a shine to his ideas about guitar-making, and told him, “You're laudo,'” which his classmate interpreted as Latin for “praiseworthy.” The Imperium, Pete Brown's inaugural guitar model for his Loudo brand. Now in its 2nd edition, the book struck a chord. From disaffected Catholic schoolgirl and 1970s music fanatic to instigator on the 1980s hardcore punk scene, Nancy Barile pursued freedom at a time when punk music was new and dangerous. While booking some of Philadelphia's earliest DIY shows featuring Minor Threat and SSD, and managing raw local acts, Nancy was at the fierce center of the action as insurgents such as the Dead Kennedys and Black Flag rewrote history. She survived punk riots and urban decay, ran the streets with outcasts, and, in her rebellion, ultimately found true love--and a powerful understanding of human nature.Subscribe Here: https://bit.ly/37qGQQrLearn More: http://www.rocknrollfridays.com

A Musical Life Conversation with Michael J. Beckerich.  We discuss meeting Jorma Kaukonen of Hot Tuna, the music blog www.thunderbirdranchramble.com and the https://musicpeopleproject.com.Michael J. BeckerichSince I was child I have had a deep connection with rock music. I saw Van Halen at MSG in NYC in 1982, I was nine years old. I dressed up as Alice Cooper for Halloween in the second grade. I listened, bought records, 8-tracks, boom boxes and iPods, played in bands and solo, read about, talked about, and since my first reporting job at Villanova University as the school's first music editor… write about it. Twelve years ago (2008) I moved my music writings to the current platform (Blogger, owned by Google) and set-up a domain at www.thunderbirdranchramble.comI traveled far and wide to not only see my favorite performers, but also visit landmark venues. The tales of these shows pepper the TBR Ramble. The concerts are greatly missed this year as COVID has dropped a bomb on the live music worlds, and to be honest, I'm getting older and have seen so much. The thing I miss most about attending shows are the music people I went with and met there. There are plenty of other ways to connect with Music People outside shows, but they were certainly an orgy of music chatter for me. When I am talking music with music people I am deeply rooted in the moment and using all corners of my brain... something people are in constant search of and some never find. Ever since I can remember I have been putting together collections of songs and sharing with friends and Music People I meet along the way. When the Philips CD Recorder first came I quickly abandoned mixed cassettes and tried to raise the bar on presentation. These CDs were called the Thunderbird Ranch Productions Music Collections. The most popular series were “Boozin' Tunes” and “Independence Day) released annually on Christmas and July 4 every year. When CDs were replaced by streaming music, they petered out. Sharing music via an Apple Music playlist or Spotify isn't the same as a good old mixed tape.Hence, The Music People Project... a creative installation that centers on the stories and ramblings of Music People. It is a way to touch, feel and connect with other Music People. At some point when I have enough interviews, the project will be shared at galleries and maybe created into a film for entry at film festivals, and online outlets. Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest places if you look at it right.- Michael J. To learn more about the Neal Casal Music Foundation visit:https://nealcasalmusicfoundation.org/To Purchase Highway Butterfly, The Songs of Neal Casal:https://nealcasalmusicfoundation.org/store/highway-butterflyAbout Neal Casal:Neal Casal was born in Denville, New Jersey in 1968. He was a songwriter, singer, guitarist, record producer, photographer, surfer and friend. When his parents divorced in the mid-70's, Neal moved with his mom from NJ to Georgia to California, before coming back to NJ and growing up in Rockaway, NJ. After graduating high school in 1987 and the end of his high school rock band, Exire, Neal started working at a guitar store called The Music Maker in Hackettstown, NJ. It was there he met a musician named Davis Jaynes, who would become Neal's mentor and a huge influence on his guitar style. They would play guitar together at the store all day and spent a year or so playing shows together around New Jersey, where Neal would develop the sound that would become the foundation of his solo career. Neal would go on to appear on multiple recordings as a member of bands like Circles Around the Sun, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Beachwood Sparks, The Skiffle Players and Hard Working Americans. He added his sublime musical touch to studio sessions and live performances by a long list of artists, including Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams, The Jayhawks, James Iha and Vetiver. His vast body of solo work was embraced by audiences worldwide and continues to be rediscovered in his passing. With the formation of the Neal Casal Music Foundation, the body of work Casal left behind, including an extensive archive of unreleased material, will be reimagined to further shine a light on his artistry, while providing resources to raise money for positive change. Neal Casal brought joy to so many and, in his absence, the foundation created in his name will further that purpose. It also hopes to reflect back to Casal the beauty he brought to this world in pursuit of a life dedicated to music and art.Neal Graeme CasalNovember 2, 1968 – August 26, 2019
