Today, we present an encore 'Full Bio' conversation with author and historian Johnathan Eig, whose book "King: A Life" is the first comprehensive, modern biography of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in decades. First, we'll hear about Eig's research and writing process, plus the early life of "Little Mike,"  King's time as a student at Morehouse and the professors who had an impact on him. Then, hear about a young King's romantic interests and his marriage to Coretta Scott, whose activist work predated his own. We also focus on 1955, the year in which the King family moved to Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to move from her bus seat, and King was drafted to lead a movement. Then, we'll hear about MLK's advisors, such as Bayard Rustin, Ralph Abernathy, and Stanley Levison, and discuss some of King's lesser known protests. And finally, we'll explore King's relationships, his disagreements with activist contemporaries, and how his work, including nearly 30 civil disobedience arrests, impacted his mental health. And finally, a look at King's civil rights efforts and priorities in the last months of his life.

We'll be joining an “Old Friend” of winningponies this week with Michael Blowen, the founder of Old Friends Retirement Farms, where he resides in Georgetown, Kentucky. The pandemic caused by Covid had a negative effect on so many businesses and Old Friends was one of them. Michael, fresh off of his national appearance on CBS Sunday Morning, will tell us about the quarantine's impact on the farm and how he is revitalizing it in 2021. In a little more than a decade Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, KY, has put a new face on the concept of equine aftercare. Founded in 2003 by former Boston Globe film critic Michael Blowen, the organization has grown from a leased paddock and one horse to a 236-acre farm, a herd of over 200 rescued and retired horses, and a satellite facility; Old Friends at Cabin Creek in Greenfield Center, NY. Blowen had long believed that horses past their prime could still be valuable – money-earning, even—if the venue was right. And so Old Friends tested the concept by opening its doors to the public, inviting fans to revisit their turf heroes. Now a “living-history museum of horse racing”, the farm attracts nearly 20,000 visitors annually who come to swoon over such American Grade 1 winners as Breeders' Cup Champions Amazombie, Little Mike and Alphabet Soup, Belmont Stakes winners Sarava and Touch Gold, and three-time Santa Anita Handicap winner Game On Dude. The farm is also home to Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion Silver Charm repatriated from stud duties overseas. Eric Wing, who pilots the plane at Horse Tourneys will update us on the Tournament scene and the action they will be offering in the days ahead (time to cash in those to cash in those E-Z Win Credits you may have won in our Belmont Contest). An astute fan of the sport, Eric will join John to review the “take-aways” from the Belmont Stakes and Triple Crown series. Did Essential Quality stamp himself as the best 3-year-old of this crop – or did Hot Rod Charlie's sensational second-place effort and speedy time serve as his coming out party for the months ahead? They will discuss this and other areas of racing grabbing headlines of late. The racing weekend is spread all over the country and we will feature an analysis of the Grade 3 $150,000 Old Forester Mint Julep at Churchill Downs where all eyes will be on Brad Cox trained Juliet Foxtrot where she will face ten rivals. The Grade 3 $150,000 Salvatore Mile will take place at Monmouth Park where a well-matched field of ten will match strides and at Santa Anita the featured $100,000 Thor's Echo will feature some of the fastest horses in California going six furlongs.

We hope you enjoy the latest episode of the Gate to Wire podcast, Past the Wire's podcast brought to you by Spendthrift Farm.Nicholas Vaccarezza is the perfect example of what the future of horse racing should be. He has passion for the sport with his love of the animal itself always coming first. He has carved out a path and road for himself he hopes will take him to the top of the world in the Sport of Kings and from what we see he is doing it the right way and is the type of man the game needs. He is paying his dues, and learning all the facets. Nicholas comes from a racing family, but it was not always that way. His father, Carlo Vaccarezza is probably best known for multiple graded stakes winner Little Mike who currently resides at Old Friends Farm in Lexington where Nick and Carlo visit him. Carlo was able to transition himself from a fan and gambling man while an extremely successful restauranteur in New York City into an owner, buyer, breeder, and ultimately a trainer. It is not easy to break into the Sport of Kings coming from a restaurant and gambling background but Carlo did it. Nick is outspoken about his views on key issues in the sport, and also what he thinks are viable solutions. We think you will enjoy meeting and getting to know this young man who sets a good example of desire and work ethic getting you where you want to go. As gamblers ourselves our bet is Nicholas Vaccarezza has a bright future in horse racing and that is good for all of us who love this sport.

A love of acting and the arts runs deeply in Rhonda's family. She was born on Sunset Blvd. and raised in the San Fernando Valley; her fondest memories were going to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre with her grandmother to see movies. Little did she know her children would grow to love acting as she did! Jonathan Lipnicki was 4 1/2 when he landed his first role as Ray Boyd in the movie Jerry Maguire, holding his own alongside Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger. He went on to star in the Stuart Little movies, The Little Vampire, and Little Mike. The balance Jonathan maintained as he transitioned to television (Dawson’s Creek), and to films as a young adult, can be attributed to Rhonda always checking in to see if acting was still a passion. In Rhonda’s words, “Jonathan is a gifted actor, but more importantly, he is a kind soul.” Jonathan has two movies coming out soon: “Pooling to Paradise” and “Broil.”

Ep 41. THE WHOLE GANG IS HERE AND THEY JUST CAME BACK FROM INNER SPACE!! THIS IS A WILD ONE!  So while we could talk all day long about how much fun it was to record with comedians Mike Feeney and Brendan Sagalow following an epic trip to inner space, there are more important issues at hand - such as the first approved very real fan fiction submission by supporter of the show, Shane R. So, without any further ado, here it is: Mike and Tim Visit Earth Fan Fiction  October 18, 2017 By: Shane R****                                                                                                                                                Chapter 1      Deep in the forests of a time long forgotten, a hooded man moved quietly through a misty twilit morning. For a long time all was quiet, but suddenly there was a brilliant flash of light paired with the crackle of electricity. The hooded man moved warily toward the sudden anomaly. A new man was seen face down, his neck kinked against a tree’s root and his arm twisted awkwardly underneath him.     As the hooded man reached the strange visitor, all he could hear were muffled sobs, murmurs of “I want to kill myself,” and what sounded like a single airy fart. The visitor was wearing a heather gray t-shirt and red heart boxers; somehow his pants were down to his ankles, perhaps explaining his less than graceful landing. Upon closer inspection the t-shirt was more of a kaleidoscopic tie-die of sweat stains than a single color, clearly the wearer was in bad shape.    “Deine Hoesen!” the hooded man shouted in a playful voice, not so much matching his knightly frame. “Ughh...Umphh....Fuck….” The visitor was finally stirring. Just in time too, the previously hooded man had disrobed down to a single pair of silky purple underwear, which just barely concealed his excitement. “Ooohhh Deine Hose ist runter du sexy Schlampe!” As the semi-nude man zeroed in on his ass, the visitor barrell rolled away in the knick of time. He quickly moved on the attack after pulling up his jeans, and with a single punch to the nose rendered his puzzling foe unconscious.    The visitor pulled out several syringes, and quickly injected the unconscious threat several times. “That better fucking stabilize him” he muttered as he took a generous swig of bourbon from a flask in his backpack. He then pulled out a tiny sharp device labeled “ENGLISH, AMERICAN” and stuck it behind the man’s head. “TIM!” yelled the visitor. “Mike?” Tim mumbled, my head is killing me! “Here, take this you faggot” Mike handed Tim a sky-blue headband that not only looked fabulous, it took the pain away like nothing else ever had. “I charged it with….love energy" Mike said as he quickly scrapped off a crusty flake from the fashion accessory.    “Ok man, while you were out I gave you some treatments, your hormones are going to stabilize  over the next 30 seconds, so I’m warning you tha-- Suddenly Tim turned a sickly green, projectile vomited and sprayed more shit out of his ass than a pissed off hippopotamus (seriously, YouTube that shit) before sprinting into a nearby stream and collapsing. Mike dragged Tim out, and did all of the difficult and unpleasant work of cleaning him up, drying him off and dressing him in new, warm, Lulu Lemon clothing he’d brought from the future. Mike would go on to receive seemingly zero benefit from these caring actions, but proved himself to be a key asset in Tim’s long journey. Secretly though he understood things differently and observed, and at this point in the story, is mostly dormant. Yet deep inside of a dark crevice within his being, something stirs that cannot be stopped.    As Tim came to, Mike said to him “we’ll deal with what just happened right now later, but now we have to move. Hopefully the memory serum worked, because if my information is correct you’re a different incarnation the soul that came into the 1980s New York time period with me in the form of Tim Rothschild. Tim stared blankly at Mike, a single tear streaming down his face. Without wasting any more time Mike locked arms with Tim, pointed a small device at them, and said “we’re going to Rainbow Road.” And with a flash they were flung through the fabric of the universe to their surreal destination.                                                          TO BE CONTINUED...  Enjoy the Show!!!

I’ll sit and chat with the band about their backgrounds, how they came together in 2009 and what is next for them. Lee Delray has just released his sophomore effort; Brand New Man. Lee grew up in New York City and has taken his influences and turned them into a sound all his own, including the melding of Blues & Hip-Hop. Lee will join me to talk about his career, music and where he is heading next.  Jj Thames returns for Couch Kid New music with her new release, Raw Sugar.  The album was produced by Couch Kid Eddie Cotton and is on Couch Kid Grady Champion’s label.  I’ll chat with Jj and find out what she has been up to since her last visit and the original music on the new album. We have a second Couch Kid New Music Segment with Little Mike.  His new release is How Long? The album is 7 originals and 5 classics done in Mike’s own style.  Mike and I will talk about the new album and what has been going on in his life since we last sat.

Good luck next week!! Black-Eyed News: This week’s Black-Eyed News included the announcement of the return of Ana Popovic to Black-Eyed Sally’s for the first time in 10 years. Our friends over at American Blues Scene have an article that is quite good about Bridging the Blues. “The Bridging the Blues idea is that the literal bridges are the bridges between Mississippi and Memphis and Arkansas. But it is also blues being the bridge to all other forms of music… and it all came outta here,” said Wesley Smith, Executive Director of the Greenville-Washington County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and originator of Bridging the Blues. He tells of how the concept came about. “We have a B.B. King Museum, we have a Blues Trail…we have arts councils that are doing blues photography exhibits and we have tourism… If only we could get everybody to do what they’re already doing, but get it into one week,” recalled Smith. That week begins with the Mighty Mississippi Music Festival/Highway 61 Blues Festival in Greenville, both beginning on October 4 and running throughout the weekend. The week “ends” with the King Biscuit Blues festival, held in Helena, Arkansas beginning on Thursday, October 10. Between the two festivals, and for several days on either side, are various performances by local musicians, museum exhibits, and tours by preservationist and Delta heritage expert, Luther Brown. Hopefully, visitors will return home understanding how the blues is itself an old and well-traveled bridge, a true American byway of a music tradition that is found time and again in other musical forms. While King Biscuit has a strict blues focus, Smith indicates the festival in Greenville will have a blues emphasis–as Hwy. 61 has had for years–but will combine that with performances from other types of music that find their origins in the rich music of the Delta. Sounds like another trip my wife and I need to take. http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2013/09/bridging-the-blues-from-the-delta-to-memphis/ Tonight Wednesday Sept 11th at Bridge Street Live in Collinsville Ct there is a Tribute to Little Walter at 8pm.
