National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)

This week's pick is the turn of one of our longest supporters, Kent! And he's chosen THE road trip movie that spawned a franchise and influenced all that came after. It's the 1983 black comedy, National Lampoon's Vacation! The movie began as an adaptation of John Hughes's short story, “Vacation '58,” published in National Lampoon magazine. The screenplay was penned by Hughes himself, marking one of his early ventures into Hollywood comedy. Directed by Harold Ramis, the film starred Chevy Chase as the hapless family patriarch, Clark Griswold. Chase's improvisational comedy style helped shape the film's humor, with Beverly D'Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall, and Dana Barron rounding out the Griswold family. The road trip concept, centered on the Griswold family's disastrous journey to the fictional Wally World amusement park, resonated with audiences, blending slapstick humor with relatable family dynamics. Principal photography took place across various U.S. locations, including Arizona, California, Colorado, and Missouri, to capture the authentic feel of a cross-country road trip. Notable challenges included shooting in sweltering heat during desert scenes and the logistical complexities of filming with a live moose at the park. The film also saw some creative last-minute changes, such as altering the original ending (where Wally World was closed indefinitely) after test audiences found it too dark. The film's mix of irreverent comedy, Hughes's sharp writing, and Ramis's deft direction made it a critical and commercial success. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: Clark Griswold is an overenthusiastic father, determined to take his family on the ultimate cross-country road trip to the Wally World amusement park. Along the way, Clark, his wife Ellen, and their children, Rusty and Audrey, face a series of increasingly absurd and catastrophic setbacks, including a car breakdown, disastrous stays with relatives, a flirtation with a mysterious woman in a Ferrari, and the tragic demise of their aunt's dog. Despite the chaos, Clark's relentless optimism drives the family to press on, culminating in a hilariously chaotic finale at Wally World that underscores the unpredictable and often hilarious nature of family vacations. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

"National Lampoon's Vacation," released in 1983, is a classic American road comedy film that has stood the test of time. Directed by Harold Ramis and written by John Hughes, based on his own short story, the film presents a hilariously exaggerated portrayal of a family road trip that turns into a series of misadventures. It stars Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold, a well-intentioned but bumbling father who is determined to take his family on a cross-country trip to the fictional amusement park, Walley World. The premise of the movie is simple yet effective. Clark Griswold, eager to spend quality time with his wife Ellen (played by Beverly D'Angelo) and their two children, Rusty and Audrey, plans a meticulously detailed road trip. From the onset, it's clear that his idealistic visions are doomed to clash with reality. This setup is a fertile ground for comedy, and the film delivers it in spades.Chevy Chase's portrayal of Clark is a standout. He brings a unique blend of optimism and naivety to the character, making him both endearing and frustrating. His performance captures the essence of a father trying too hard to create the perfect vacation experience for his family, only to see his efforts comically thwarted at every turn. The dynamic within the Griswold family is one of the film's strengths. Beverly D'Angelo delivers a solid performance as Ellen, providing a voice of reason amidst the chaos. The children, played by Anthony Michael Hall and Dana Barron, contribute to the film's humour with their teenage angst and sibling bickering. One of the movie's most memorable aspects is its episodic structure, which sees the family encountering various obstacles and quirky characters along their journey. This structure keeps the narrative fresh and unpredictable. Each segment of their trip introduces new comedic scenarios, from the iconic scene with the deceased Aunt Edna on the roof of the car to the hilarious encounters with Cousin Eddie, played brilliantly by Randy Quaid. The humour in "National Lampoon's Vacation" ranges from slapstick to subtle satirical jabs at American culture. The film satirizes the quintessential American road trip, highlighting how the pursuit of a perfect family vacation can devolve into a disastrous and absurd ordeal. The comedic timing is impeccable, with each gag and joke landing effectively without feeling forced. However, what truly sets this film apart is its underlying heart. Amidst all the chaos and comedy, it's a film about family bonding and the lengths to which a parent will go to provide happiness for their family. This emotional core is what resonates with audiences and has helped the film maintain its appeal over the years.Visually, the film is a product of its time, with a distinct early 80s aesthetic. The cinematography is straightforward, focusing more on the characters and their interactions than on visual flair. The soundtrack, featuring the catchy theme song "Holiday Road" by Lindsey Buckingham, complements the film's upbeat and adventurous tone. From a critical standpoint, "National Lampoon's Vacation" might not be a cinematic masterpiece in the traditional sense. Its humour can be seen as dated or over-the-top by contemporary standards. However, its cultural impact and status as a comedy classic are undeniable. The film spawned several sequels, though none quite captured the magic of the original. In conclusion, "National Lampoon's Vacation" is a quintessential comedy film that has left an indelible mark on American pop culture. Its blend of humour, heart, and a touch of absurdity makes it a delightful watch even decades after its release. Chevy Chase's performance as Clark Griswold remains one of his most iconic roles, cementing the film's place in the pantheon of classic American comedies. While it may not cater to all tastes, its status as a beloved family road trip comedy is well-deserved, making it a must-watch for fans of the genre. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

When Miriam, an angel in training, notices the gang is headed for trouble, she alerts her supervisor, Clarence. The two watch a recap of current events. Both Andrea and Brandon are newly split from their respective steadies. Brenda and Kelly are trying to maintain a friendly situation with each other and Dylan. Donna is attempting to keep the school's Christmas charity from collapsing while David grouses about the fact all his friends will graduate in six months. Also, Steve is in a lot of detention. But will any of that matter when Miriam reveals the real danger the kids are driving toward? Justin immediately identifies a certain senioritis in the episode's plotting. The ages of the actors becomes an unavoidable topic. Erik finds an unlikely role for Luke Perry. Both come out on the side of Jeanie Bueller. Geography Corner centers on the failed I-710 completion project and its proximity to the Walsh house. The actors playing Miriam and Clarence lead to unexpected avenues. Erik extols some of Die Hard 2's virtues. A question about Dana Barron's filmography leads to a Death Wish discussion. "This Corrosion" becomes an unlikely holiday anthem and the nature of "French films" comes into question.

Welcome back to BeREAL! This week, Diana and Ednesha are joined by Jolene Blackbourn to discuss mental health in the legal field. Jolene Blackbourn is a California attorney who left her senior level position at a Fortune 100 company to help students graduate from college and law school in less time, with less debt and with less stress so they can live the life they always dreamed. She has been advising law students since she was one herself and has been giving speeches at universities for 20 years.    Jolene starts off the episode by explaining her stance on law school and the entire legal journey. She looks to promote safety in the application process and financial process. By safety this is both physical safety (student debt can lead to big issues in life) but also mental safety (both applications and finances are stress inducing). Ednesha uses this to jump into a conversation about the cost of law school. Specifically how the high cost of tuition leads to high average student debt which can create a feeling within law students that they must work long unhealthy hours to outrun their debt.   Following this, Jolene gets into talking about how to avoid law school debt. A big myth that she wants to bust is that you need to go to a top ranked law school. This mindset is what gets so many people into debt and it's entirely untrue. In many circumstances actually, depending on what field of law you want to work in, it can be better to have a lower ranked school on your resume. And, on top of that, you'll be leaving your law school years with less debt. Many top ranked law schools don't even serve as gateways to a good paying legal job. Even big law has hidden costs that are often overlooked because of the big salary.   After a short break, the women return to talk about gender in the legal field. Jolene discusses the rise she sees in the number of women attending law school, and how this impacts the field. However, she also points out that many firms are still not family friendly. She offers her own experience as an example that in big law, after she had her first child, she was still expected to work long hours and neglect her role as a mother. Luckily, there are still some firms that are very hospitable to working mothers and some that were even completely remote before COVID.   Lastly, Jolene talks explicitly about mental health in the legal field. She gives examples of many stress inducing practices within law firms and how many lawyers are expected to meet unrealistic goals. To reduce stress, Jolene recommends looking for a practice that accommodates your lifestyle, and looking at ways to reduce your debt. Some suggestions she makes are taking a gap year or taking a lighter course load in law school.   Thank you for tuning into BeREAL this week. Be on the lookout for an all new episode next Tuesday. Welcome back to BeREAL! This week, Diana and Ednesha are joined by Dana Barron and Bridget Shannon of Wellness Lately to discuss diet culture and its impacts on mental health. Bridget Shannon and Dana Barron are the Founders of Wellness Lately. They help women stop binge eating and obsessing about food every day. Their mission is to reclaim wellness from diet culture. And their work is rooted in body liberation and food freedom, helping women all over the world escape the painful diet-binge cycle and embrace true well-being. Through their coaching programs, events and community they teach the principles of Intuitive Eating, Health at Every Size, Body Neutrality and Holistic Wellness.   Ednesha begins the episode by sharing a little history on her experience with dieting. She is what you may call a “chronic dieter” and has tried quite a few diet variations. Diana shares about her partner's new intermittent fasting diet and how it has affected her life as someone who does not diet. Bridget and Dana jump in to discuss how they realized that in their past jobs within the wellness field, they were promoting the concept of an “ideal body.” Now, however, with their work at Wellness Lately, the women look to heal people's relationship with eating and body image.   Dana and Bridget continue by defining the beliefs of their practice. They discuss intuitive eating and what it means to eat in response to your body and not your brain. They also define Intuitive eating (capital “I”) as the framework used to train women to connect with their bodies. These two concepts are utilized to teach how one can eat and still enjoy life without fear of weight gain. They go on to explain where the fear of weight gain originates in society. There are overarching messages instilled in business and advertising that weight loss is a good thing, but many people also have personal experiences that may have amplified a fear of weight gain. Ednesha ties the conversation back to her experiences as a Black woman. Beauty standards in America are all Euro-centric and along with thinness they also promote whiteness.    After a short break, the women return to discuss eating disorders. Diet culture has only worsened eating disorders and it can have numerous other negative effects on mental health. Part of this trend originates from orthorexia. Orthorexia is an obsession with healthy eating and such an obsession is not healthy within itself.    To finish off the episode, the women discuss why it is so hard to separate weight and health in American society. They talk about how consumer culture has shaped these two into one and some ways to untether them in your mind. Today’s guests, Bridget Shannon and Dana Barron, are the founders of Wellness Lately, a coaching program designed to help women change their relationships with body image, food and self-worth. For anyone who feels like they’ve hit rock bottom with body image issues or may be struggling with disordered eating, Bridget and Dana have developed a framework to break the cycle perpetuated by diet culture. What Causes Body Image Issues? Many of us have looked in the mirror at some point and not liked the way we look. Maybe we pick apart certain parts of ourselves or have a certain image in mind of what we should look like. Bridget and Dana are working to repair that harmful mindset by re-framing the definition of body positivity. Why do we have body image issues? Is it social media? Or maybe our upbringing? According to Bridget and Dana, it’s a combination of factors, outlined in their four-step framework:Cultural criticism: societal norms for how we should look. Individual beliefs: What beliefs were imprinted on us as children?Body respect: accepting where your body is today, even if you don’t love every part of it.Embracing body neutrality: being thankful for what your body can do, rather than focusing on what it looks like. Embracing Body NeutralityThe idea of body neutrality differs from the popular body positivity movement in that it re-frames the mindset around respecting your body. For many women, fully embracing how we look on the outside is a difficult hurdle to jump over. Body neutrality allows you to focus on respect and appreciation for what your body is capable of. Along with this, it allows us to shift toward more intuitive eating, rather than worrying about a number on the scale. I’m Strong, Healthy and I Can Eat What I Want!Bridget and Dana also discuss diet culture and how harmful it can be. Many of their clients are tired and frustrated with counting calories and restrictive eating. Many struggles with binge eating and other disorders. Their program focuses on shifting over to intuitive eating, listening to your body and allowing yourself to enjoy food. They also discuss social media and its impact on diet culture. While social media can be positive and helpful in many ways, it also causes us to constantly compare ourselves to others when it comes to appearance, weight and lifestyle. If you’re struggling with body image or disordered eating, Bridget and Dana are here to help you. Check out their website to learn more about their coaching programs. Listen to their podcast, “Wellness Lately” and keep up with them on Instagram and Facebook.

Warning: If you love the patriarchy, and celebrate dieting and body shaming, this is NOT the episode for you.“It would be one thing if spending our time and money to be thin and beautiful actually worked... but if you've ever been on a diet and reached your goal weight and you *still* hated yourself when you looked in the mirror you understand: it doesn't work.” - DBThis conversation with Dana Barron from Wellness Lately digs deep into the co-opting of “wellness”, the patriarchy, how we are culturally conditioned as children to self silence our intuition, and how all that shows up in full force during postpartum.Dana shares her journey into motherhood, and how doing the work of healing her relationship with herself, with food, and finding her voice was key in softening the blow that is the unsupported postpartum journey in America. But even she, a holistic health coach and intuitive eating enthusiast, didn't get through postpartum unscathed.Trust me, you won't want to miss this. And if you like the pod, a rating or review goes a long way in helping the show grow! European Vacation is a 1985 American comedy film directed by Amy Heckerling and written by John Hughes and Robert Klane based on a story by Hughes. The second film in National Lampoon's Vacation film series, it stars Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo. Dana Hill and Jason Lively replace Dana Barron and Anthony Michael Hall as Griswald children Audrey and Rusty. After Hall declined to reprise his role (he decided to star in Weird Science instead), the producers decided to recast both children. Amy Heckerling also directed Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Look Who's Talking, and Clueless. “Everybody in the car. Boat leaves in two minutes, or perhaps you don't want to see the second largest ball of twine on the face of the Earth, which is only four short hours away!” Harold Ramis' second foray into feature film directing introduced the world to the Griswolds – Clark, Ellen, Rusty and Audrey – as they drive from Chicago to LA on a 2-week vacation with the aim of visiting an obvious Disneyland replacement for legal reasons, Walley World. It's a wonderful film and proved to be another box office success for Ramis, who wouldn't direct another hit like this for 10 years with ‘Groundhog Day.' Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our very short Harold Ramis series with the classic 1983 road trip comedy “National Lampoon's Vacation.” We talk about the original John Hughes story on which this is based and look at the darker tones in that story, comparing it with how it was reshaped in this film. We discuss the cast, notably Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall, Dana Barron, Imogene Coca (and her dog), Randy Quaid, Christie Brinkley and Eddie Bracken. We chat about the ending of the short story, the original ending and the rewritten ending and debate what works best (and what problems this one may have because of the final ending). And we, of course, talk about the franchise, comparing this with what we view as the only other good one in the bunch, 1989's ‘National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.'
