As it dawned on David Sweeney's father that the people he was investing with online were scammers, he made a shock admission to his family. “I've lost all the money,” he said. It was the start of a fight led by his son David against the banks that had allowed about $1 million to leave his father's accounts. It was an ordeal that lasted for five years, as a bank tried to deny it had been given a warning about the scammers before the money was taken. In the end, David Sweeney's family got all the cash reimbursed, but the battle had taken its toll. Now, the Government has drafted legislation to address the rise in scamming, but it's stopped short of forcing the banks to repay the victims. A reimbursement scheme is already in place in the United Kingdom, and today, investigative reporter Adele Ferguson explains how it's working there to protect people's savings. Featured: Adele Ferguson, ABC investigative reporterKey Topics:Online scamsBanking systemScam prevention legislationConsumer protectionFinancial fraudOption FM scam

Modern software engineering practices of Agile and DevSecOps have provided a foundation for producing working software products faster and more reliably than ever before. Far too often, however, these practices do not address the non-software concerns of business mission and capability delivery even though these concerns are critical to the successful delivery of a software product. Through our work with government organizations, we have found that expanding DevSecOps beyond product development enables other teams to increase their capabilities and improve their processes. Agile methodologies are also being used for complex system and hardware developments. In this podcast from the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute, Lyndsi Hughes, a senior systems engineer and David Sweeney, an associate software developer, both with the SEI CERT Division, share their experiences leveraging DevSecOps pipelines in atypical situations in support of teams focused on the capability delivery and business mission for their organizations.

Bureau of Meteorology Climate Manager Dr Karl Braganza outlined how both El Niño and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) tend to draw rain away from Australia. The Bureau made the El Niño declaration after three of the four El Niño criteria were met, including a sustained response in the atmospheric circulation above the tropical Pacific.Next, James was joined by David Sweeney, a prominent Australian anti-nuclear campaigner, working for the Australian Conservation Foundation as their nuclear policy analyst. David debunked the argument for nuclear energy in Australia that has been dominating the media recently. Third, Roger Jones, a Professorial Research Fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Industries & Liveable Cities at Victoria University, came on to talk to James and Rob about the risks of bushfire and heatwaves projected for this coming summer, and how people in urban and rural areas can prepare for them. The team then took a moment to talk about Rupert Murdoch stepping down as chairperson of NewsCorp, and what that means for the media landscape worldwide moving forward. Lastly, Jaimi Sultana, co-founder of the I Am Me Foundation and partner of multi-instrumentalist Tash Sultana, talked to Rob and Grace about their burgeoning work to help and support gender diverse folks be their true selves.  Songs played: Why - Kutcha Edwards I've Lied - Archie Roach When My Ship Comes In - Quality Used Cars

The Galactic Underworld: The spatial distribution of compact remnants by David Sweeney et al. on Monday 17 October We chart the expected Galactic distribution of neutron stars and black holes. These compact remnants of dead stars -- the Galactic underworld -- are found to exhibit a fundamentally different distribution and structure to the visible Galaxy. Compared to the visible Galaxy, concentration into a thin flattened disk structure is much less evident with the scale height more than tripling to 1260 +- 30 pc. This difference arises from two primary causes. Firstly, the distribution is in part inherited from the integration over the evolving structure of the Galaxy itself (and hence the changing distribution of the parent stars). Secondly, an even larger effect arises from the natal kick received by the remnant at the event of its supernova birth. Due to this kick we find 30% of remnants have sufficient kinetic energy to entirely escape the Galactic potential (40% of neutron stars and 2% of black holes) leading to a Galactic mass loss integrated to the present day of ~ 0.4% of the stellar mass of the Galaxy. The black hole -- neutron star fraction increases near the Galactic centre: a consequence of smaller kick velocities in the former (the assumption made is that kick velocity is inversely proportional to mass). Our simulated remnant distribution yields probable distances of 19 pc and 21 pc to the nearest neutron star and black hole respectively, while our nearest probable magnetar lies at 4.2 kpc. Although the underworld only contains of order ~ 1% of the Galaxy's mass, observational signatures and physical traces of its population, such as microlensing, will become increasingly present in data ranging from gravitational wave detectors to high precision surveys from space missions such as Gaia. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.04241v2

When I went along on my real estate journey and—all of a sudden—apartments became the thing that I wanted, there was a level of excitement that I had not experienced before... I imagine myself owning many apartment buildings, and that's the vision I've set for myself.' In December of 2016, veteran Seattle police officer David Sweeney turned 53. After a 30-year career, he had reached the minimum retirement age, but David knew he could not stop working if he wanted his family to have a comfortable life. Looking for new options for himself and his family, he started exploring real estate. David liked the ring of ‘multi-family investor,' so he started looking for duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes. By April, he had secured his real estate license to gain access to the MLS, and he spent the next five months evaluating 400-plus deals. Though a few deals fell through, David was motivated by his goal. He refinanced his own home and pulled $380K—and waited for the right opportunity. By August, David had started thinking bigger, and when he came across a 24-unit property in Centralia, he made an offer that was accepted. Now David is looking for his next deal and looking to help other aspiring investors find deals of their own. Today he shares his process for analyzing deals and how he made the mindset shift from pursuing duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes to apartment buildings. He discusses the challenges he faced in getting a loan and how he leverages his commercial lender as a ‘second set of eyes.'
