Hey now! Back again with Paul K Ward at the controls at studio blue…and that's supposed to be all lower case. I'm Tom D'Antoni at my desk, not ready to go back to Artichoke Music. Wait, I'm not done. With Paul is famed guitar slinger Terry Robb, so good that the Cascade Blues Association stopped giving him best guitarist award and named the damned thing after him. Plus, at his home in Victoria, British Columbia is former Portlander, winner of a bunch of Blues Maple Awards for best pianist, Paul deLay's last of the best piano players and boogie woogie master, David Vest. They have a new album of duets out called Criss Cross. And we're here to find out why and wherefore.

Since Coffeeshop Conversations has returned from health-related hiatus (mine), first of all it's been fun doing them again and second, I love the guests we've had. David Vest and Terry Robb last week in particular. If you missed them, I suggest you listen but not this minute because we've got a good one this time. Before we go any further, let's give a big round of ammunition (as Doctor John used to say) to Paul K Ward who has kindly lent his talents and his studo blue…all lower case…to record, mix and fix these episodes while I continue to try to recover from what I have to recover from. The strange thing is that the first time that today's guest Kyleen King made an appearance on Coffeeshop Conversations, in January 2023, we had to do it this way too. Me at my desk and Kyleen at home. I had covid that time. One of these days we'll actually sit across from each other, I hope. By the way, Kyleen was also a guest last summer on Darka and Miri's Light and Limn Podcast which also can be heard on OMN. So why such a fast return? Because Kyleen's life has taken a new direction and we'll find out all about it. That and how it will or will not limit her music. We had a delightful conversation last time and there's no good reason to think this one will be any different. So with that too-long introduction…a big hello to Kyleen King.

Our guest today used to be a fixture in the music scene in Oregon…then he got married and moved to Victoria…that's in Canada. Or maybe he moved first. I dunno. But whatever, that's where David Vest lives now. And he's won all kinds of national awards there. He is releasing his first recordings in three years. Two CDs, both live but very different from each other. One, recorded at a festival in Calgary and the other in a small club in Victoria. The festival is full of our favorite David Vest tunes, raucous boogie-woogie. The other is very subtle. I don't think there's a name for it yet The songs are familiar Blues tunes but the arrangements and the attitudes are…well it's almost Chamber Blues. Mr. Vest will tell it best. And we'll hear a tune from the club at the end.

Music Artist, David Vaters New Christmas Holiday Classic, “Christmas Eve Forever”Christmas Holiday New Classic. A Holiday Tune for EveryoneChristmas Eve ForeverLISTEN NOWhttps://ffm.to/mx3avqo.oprChristmas Eve Forever By Talented David Vaters Sets to Be the New Christmas Holiday ClassicTis the season — for seasonal music. If you’re a little tired of the traditional song collections consider switching it up with new release from critically acclaimed and talented singer, songwriter David Vaters titled Christmas Eve Forever, a Christmas love song that has it all, Love, Santa and wishes come true. This song is destined to be the new Christmas Holiday Classic and the soundtrack should help spice up the Christmas spirit for you. This year, blockbuster songwriter David Vaters turned his prodigious talent to holiday tunes, coming up with a top-notch original song for the season. From November onwards, Christmas songs become ever more inescapable. You’ll hear them at any Christmas party, while you’re doing your Christmas shopping, and pretty much any time you turn on a TV or radio. When it comes to making your own Christmas playlist, you’ll probably want a perfect festive blend of tried and tested favorites and slightly less familiar yuletide tunes. Christmas Eve Forever has both in droves, so put on your Santa hat and get fully into the Christmas spirit. What makes a truly great Christmas song? There are plenty of good ones that are purely celebratory, but the real classics dig deeper into the full breadth of emotions we experience at Christmas. Even an absolute belter like 1973's Merry Xmas Everybody by Slade has complex undertones - it served as a demand to forget about the grim economic circumstances of the time, have fun and, "Look to the future now / It's only just begun."Sometimes Christmas songs become so familiar that we can grow immune to their inherent sadness, like with Wham!'s evergreen Last Christmas. But, as we'll find out, it's a crushing song of heartbreak but Christmas Eve Forever has an entire new concept of Love, Santa, wishes come true and more. ,ON SPOTIFYhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/42zvXH27ceRmSxYCik5rtO About VatersDavid Vaters passion as a singer/songwriter is something he could not hold back any longer. Music Critic Rick Jamm -Jamsphere.comHuffington Post, stated, “David's music is creative and original, suffused with an ardent spiritual awareness rare in today’s music industry.”CCM Magazine featured David in an interview recently describing him as, - Something new, all over again! The upcoming ‘Volume 3’ boasts most of the same impressive line-up as its predecessor, a collaboration that had critics calling ‘Volume 1 & 2’ “nothing if not mature, deftly crafted and powerful.” Like that album, ‘Volume 3’ will be part of Vaters’ ‘A Voice in the Wilderness’ collection of volumed records. “If this is the first album of his out of the starting blocks, at least in a titular sense, imagine what gems are likely to follow,” raved Dave Franklin of Los Angeles - The Plug.Great songs on this album, delivered by David Vaters in a Bowie type approach which really punches through. The backing vocals remind me of the sort of sound the Beatles had. Apart from drums and keyboards which are excellent, the Cd chugs along nicely without any disappointment. Very good, especially enjoyed the vocals and the songs. Nicely put together offering! Well done!David Markee - Former bass player for Eric Clapton"A very honest singer-songwriter album, with a Dylan-esque delivery of heartfelt lyrics to God, to family, to friends...very refreshing to hear."Bob FarrellGrammy Award - Songwriter/Producer"What a total breath of fresh air! Madhusree discusses her personal and ideological motivations for writing the book, as well as exploring what the Bengal famine and British imperial policy say about the nature of imperialism and colonialism in India and throughout the world. Eric and Madhusree also bring the issues forward our time by probing how the same agricultural policies, engendered by capitalism and profit, are helping to exacerbate poverty, dispossession, and environmental degradation today. Eric and Madhusree don't shy away from debating the legacies of Gandhi and Subhas Chandra Bose, and the role of India and the emerging non-Western powers today. In the second part of the show, Eric is joined by Danny Haiphong, a Boston-based political activist and columnist for Black Agenda Report, to discuss his recent piece on self-determination and political movement-building in the US and the Western world. The conversation touches on current trends, as well as historical exemplars such as the Black Panther Party. Eric and Danny also examine what revolutionary movement-building requires, and what it will look like given the current political and economic climate. First, Eric speaks with Don DeBar, independent broadcaster and Senior Producer at Community Public Radio (CPRmetro.org). Eric and Don discuss the state of the independent media, and how it has been rapidly transformed in recent years. Don presents an inside account of the corporate takeover and purge of Pacifica Radio and its NYC flagship station WBAI, pulling back the curtain on how Pacifica operates, and why some of its good work has come to be overshadowed by the bad, especially when it comes to issues of war and peace. Eric and Don also touch on the war in Libya and how that exposed much of the media for being aligned with the US-NATO war agenda. In the second half of the show, Eric welcomes Laura Carlsen, Director of the Americas Program at the Center for International Policy to the program. Eric and Laura discuss the 2014 Ayotzinapa massacre of student teachers in Mexico, and the obvious government cover-up of the incident. Laura explains what happened in late September 2014, what the circumstances were leading up to the massacre, and the inconsistencies in the initial government investigation. Eric and Laura also discuss neoliberalism and privatization, and how this massacre should be understood as part of a broader political process ongoing in Mexico with direct US involvement. Eric and Mickey discuss dominant narratives, the writing of history, and the mis-education of the educational system. They touch on everything from the Orwellian phenomenon of groupthink and its predominance in our political culture to the use of the term "conspiracy theory" as a pejorative term and a weapon of political and intellectual marginalization. All this and much more on Episode 11 of CounterPunch Radio, featuring intro and outtro music provided by the Dr. of the Blues, the man with a PhD in Boogie Woogie, David Vest, and interlude by Chumbawamba. They examine how issues of class, race, and identity took their respective places in politics and society during the 70s, as well as the role of the Vietnam War in galvanizing various forms of countercultural protest and expression.
