Welcome to your weekly UAS news update we have 3 stories for you; GAO Report on Foreign Made Drones, officials tell Fairfax County to stop using DJI, Axon acquires Dedrone, and new record drone show. First up, the GAO has released a report on the Department of Interior's stance on foreign drones. Currently, the DOI does not allow foreign drones to be used except for emergency situations such as search and rescue and wild fires. The GAO studied the effects of the policies after the DOI asked them to, covering the 4 most active departments; bureau of land management (BLM), Fire and Wildlife service (FWS), National Park Service (NPS), and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Findings from the GAO are predictable; the majority of drones are now nearing their end of life and replacing them with compliant drones is much more expensive. Due to the reduction in fleet size, bureaus haven't been able to expand their use of drones and some no longer have enough drones even for emergencies. Even for bureaus that have purchased approved drones, the drones aren't be delivered until 6 months or more later. The GAO gave the example that in April of 2024, the DOI had purchased 98 drones for fiscal year 2024 and only 46 had been delivered. In another example, the National Park Service purchased drones for wild fire management in March and were not expected to have the drones in hand until October, missing nearly all of the 2024 fire season. The GAO goes on to discuss that compliant drones are not as capable in carrying payloads nor are as reliable. Due to these problems, not only have emergency flights decreased but non-emergency flights for research, surveys, training, and post-storm recoveries have become nearly non-existent. Next up, federal law makers John Moolenaar and Raja Krishnamoorthi from the House of Representatives have urged Fairfax County to stop using DJI. In a letter to the county Board of Supervisors the representatives stated “The PRC-made UAS platforms and censors currently used by Fairfax County collect high-resolution imagery of facilities and individuals at risk, putting them at risk of being collected by the CCP,” This is the first time we've seen representatives attempting to influence a particular public safety department on what drones to use or not use. Fairfax county sits just south west of Washington DC along the Potomac river. At this time, we don't know how the county will respond but we'll keep you updated if we see more. Third, Axon has finished the acquisition of Dedrone. Dedrone is a counter UAS system that uses RF detection, RADAR, cameras and for authorized users can include hammers, drone take over, and kinetic means to stop a rogue drone. An important note is that the DOD are the only ones currently who are allowed to utilize these tools to stop a drone. We'll keep you updated if we see more from Dedrone and Axon! Last up, Sky Elements broke the record this week for the most drones launching pyrotechnics. The city of Mansfield TX partnered with Sky Elements to break the word record of most drones launching pyrotechnics. Sky Elements used 1164 drones to break the record in a free drone show for residents. Cool use of the drones and we're sure we'll continue to see bigger and bigger drone shows! PwC UK drones lead Elaine Whyte, Dedrone's Amit Samani and Tris Dyson of Nesta discuss the economic and social potential of drones and whether public anxieties might be allayed through regulation and control by public authorities.  PwC has estimated that the UK drone market could be worth £42bn by 2030 and deliver productivity gains worth £16bn. The technology is already enabling huge savings on inspection and surveillance with people-free delivery solutions just around the corner. Public good has been demonstrated in use by the emergency and rescue services and in the delivery of medical supplies to remote locations. On the other hand, memories of the Gatwick Airport shutdown are fresh, and people are justifiably anxious. Data collection by Dedrone around UK airfields confirms that a significant amount of illegal activity is going on. Public anxiety has slowed or halted other technologies in their early days (think wind farms and GM foods), so the drone industry is looking to regulation and other means to increase public confidence. How local authorities might respond - by being part of the management of ‘the space up to 400 feet off the ground' is discussed, and reference made to Nesta's ongoing Flying High programme which in its first phase worked with councils in Bradford, London, Preston, Southampton and the West Midlands to develop visions for a future with drones.

Drones have become ubiquitous for a number of commercial and consumer purposes. But what happens when drones land in the wrong hands? The Chertoff Group’s Ben Joelson and Phil Pitsky Vice President of Federal Operations for airspace security company Dedrone discuss the challenges and threats that drones can pose and what can be done under current law to protect from potential risks.

Welcome to Version 2.0 of AI with AI! Dave starts off by trying to explain the weird podcast titles, and he plugs Andy’s (@ai_ilachinski) and his (@crypticnarwhal) Twitter accounts. Andy and Dave then get down to business discussing Britain’s “successful” trials of using AI (“SAPIENT”) in urban battlefield scanning to identify enemy movements; the IEEE launches an ethics certification program for autonomous and intelligent systems; the U.S. Department of Energy invests $218M in Quantum Information Science; and DARPA announces the Subterranean Challenge, for technologies to augment underground operations, and wherein Dave makes a dire prediction of Tolkien-proportions! Andy and Dave then delve greedily and deeply into a series of topics of counter-AI. They start with discussing Dedrone, which has developed a capability to detect and track swarms (of robots/drones). Researchers in Korea use an AI-enabled drone to herd flocks of birds (diverting them from designated airspace). Researchers at the University of Albany, with GE, demonstrate the ability to attack object detectors (Faster Regional Convolutional Neural Networks) using imperceptible patches on the background; and researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology, with Intel, announce ShapeShifter, a targeted physical attack on Faster R-CNN object detectors found in “state-of-the-art” detectors (such as the current generation of self-driving vehicles). On the other side, Luca de Alfaro at the University of California, Santa Cruz, published research into creating neural networks with built-in resistance to adversarial attacks, by reducing the neural networks’ “local linearity.” After a quick touch on research from Google Research on simplifying and compacting neural networks (for resource-constrained devices) without floating point operations or multiplications, Andy recommends a paper on Learning Causality; August Cole’s Angry Trident makes the story of the week; Interpretable Machine Learning (by Molnar) is the book of the week, along with Pattern Classification by Duda, Hart, and Stork; and Christopher Moore explores the Limits of Computation in a two-part video series. This week, the Bowery Capital team hosted Bobby Long, VP of Sales at Dedrone, to discuss "Insight Selling In The Modern Market." Dedrone is the first automated drone security platform; an extension of physical and cyber security into the airspace that protects a vulnerability gap exploited by the advances in consumer and commercial drone technology. Their most notable references include the Clinton-Trump presidential debates, the Suffolk County prison in New York, the Royal Family of Qatar, Citi Field (the New York Mets' stadium), and the World Economic Forum in Davos. In today's episode, Bobby joins us in the studio to discuss insight selling in the modern market and why he takes this approach. First, he talks about the differences between solution selling and insight selling. He defines solution selling as "Sales 101" where you get a deal by finding customer pain points and fitting your solution to those pain points within your prospect's budget. Bobby sees most companies using solution selling and sees an opportunity to differentiate by using insight selling, which he says allows you to position yourself as a subject matter expert and establish credibility and legitimacy. Bobby says that if you employ insight selling the right way, you form more of a partnership with your prospect or customer, leading to a higher rate of renewals. He discusses the challenges of insight selling and why it's not for every rep, along with some of the difficulties he's faced teaching reps how to insight sell and some solutions for getting around them. Finally, Bobby says not to be afraid of making visionary statements during the sales cycle versus just talking about what your product does, and he recommends reading this Harvard Business Review article.
