A new generation of suppliers is creating a new set of tools unified by a recognizable design language to signal quality and intention in a matcha program.

Le concept de "Design System" est au coeur des discussions design mais il peut revêtir de nombreux sens : styleguide, UI Kit, DS, DLS...

Faster Horses | A podcast about UI design, user experience, UX design, product and technology

So what's the difference between design language and tone of voice? Where are the boundaries between the tone of voice and design language, and who leads the strategy of these? Are they interchangeable? In literature, the Tone of Voice refers to the author's feelings towards the subject, as expressed through the writing itself. Writing for the web is obviously different from writing prose (or at least it should be since web users read very little.) Still, every scrap of writing on a page (from body copy to button labels and other UX copywriting) contributes to the tone of voice we're using to speak to our users (https://www.nngroup.com/articles/tone-of-voice-dimensions/).Visual communication is exceptionally complicated. It's diverse, boundless, and relentless. To induce a sense of clarity and coherence to it, we need to establish a series of constraints that will help us communicate with our end-users. This is where Design Language comes into play (https://www.uxpin.com/studio/blog/design-language/)Why are these important, and how can navigate those tricky workplace politics? All this and more are answered in this episode of Faster Horses.

In this episode we talk with Social Designer Cheryl Heller. We take on the worlds “health” and “healing” and discuss how these concepts are really pervasive in all realms of existence. Language, as a creator of worlds, must be interrogated so that we know who gets to choose which words are used to define individual, social, economic and planetary healing. We talk about the evolving role of designers, the role of super-experts and super-generalists and the problematics when we try to build interdisciplinary academic and business institutions. We also discuss the feeling of separation between humans and nature, and how this perceived split must be overcome in an ontological and pragmatic way.  Cheryl Heller founded the first MFA program in Social Design at the SVA. She is President of the Measured Lab and founder of the design lab CommonWise. She received theAIGA Lifetime Medal and is also aRockefeller Bellagio Fellow. This week we got the conversation kicked off with a segway from Molly Wright Steenson's Architectural Intelligence.  Here she introduced both of us to a fresh take on the work of Christopher Alexander, and because of this we decided to dedicate a full episode to exploring the structure of A Pattern Language.  We initially looked at the comparison drawn between Alexander's approach to objectivity in design and Eisenman's approach.  From there we discussed what it means to make a public critically aware and engaged with their physical environment and which approach was better at accomplishing this goal.  This discussion then led us to consider how a language evolves and changes over time.  Chris raised the point about how slang and new words are adopted into a language and how that adoption is applicable in the architectural realm.  Given that we have more parameters in just the last 20 years that we now have to facilitate in design how should a pattern language continue to evolve and augment itself over time, and what agency to individuals have to make this change in their own design decisions.    Newsletter signup: https://wordpress.us18.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=dbf620955f84c3d9b8321ea7b&id=4d5745e1b3 Pattern Language Website: https://www.patternlanguage.com/    Christopher Alexander Lecture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98LdFA-_zfA    Molly Wright Steenson Architectural Intelligence: http://www.girlwonder.com/papers-articles    Empathic Futures Lab Blog by Christian Pepper - Evolved Pattern Language - 1: https://empathicfutures.wordpress.com/2018/05/09/advanced-pattern-language-1/

In this podcast, Peter Feiler discusses a case study that demonstrates how an analytical architecture fault-modeling approach can be combined with confidence arguments to diagnose a time-sensitive design error in a control system and to provide evidence that proposed changes to the system address the problem. The analytical approach, based on the SAE Architecture Analysis and Design Language for its well-defined timing and fault-behavior semantics, demonstrates that such hard-to-test errors can be discovered and corrected early in the lifecycle, thereby reducing rework cost. The case study shows that by combining the analytical approach with confidence maps, we can present a structured argument that system requirements have been met and problems in the design have been addressed adequately—increasing our confidence in the system quality. The case study analyzes an aircraft engine control system that manages fuel flow with a stepper motor. The original design was developed and verified in a commercial model-based development environment without discovering the potential for missed step commanding. During system tests, actual fuel flow did not correspond to the desired fuel flow under certain circumstances. The problem was traced to missed execution of commanded steps due to variation in execution time. Listen on Apple Podcasts.

In this podcast, Julien Delange discusses two extensions to the Architecture Analysis and Design Language: the behavior annex and the error-model annex. The behavior annex represents the functional logic of AADL components and interacts with the other system elements. SEI researchers are currently participating in the ongoing improvements of this extension of the AADL by connecting it to other analysis tools. The error model annex augments the architecture description by specifying safety concerns of the system (error propagation, error behavior, etc.). The language is the foundation of new analysis tools that provide qualitative and quantitative assessment of system safety and reliability. SEI researches have defined new tools that analyze the model and produces safety validation documents, such as the one required by safety standard such as the SAE ARP4761.  Listen on Apple Podcasts.

Microsoft’s “Metro” design language first appeared on Windows phone, and has now been adapted for Xbox and Windows 8. Since its appearance it has generated a combination of praise, confusion and copious discussion among interaction designers. Is Metro a valid attempt to evolve the art of interactive products and services? Or is it a deliberate strategy to commoditise interaction design to the point where it requires less design, and less designers?
