We just got back from nine days in Florida. It was the first non-sports vacation we had taken in three and a half years.That number stopped me cold when I said it out loud. Not that we hadn't gone anywhere — we'd been everywhere, for tournaments. But a trip that existed for no reason other than to step away? Three and a half years.The trip got built around Christopher, who is a Chiefs fan, and a preseason game against the Bucs on August 22nd. Beach in Treasure Island. A Rays game. The Bucs game in Tampa. Then Orlando — water parks, Discovery Cove, Mickey's Halloween Party. Somewhere in the middle of it was a Friday where I sat on a beach from 9:30 in the morning until four in the afternoon and did nothing at all.I have not done that in years. And if you have heard me talk about the trip to Aruba my husband surprised me with for my 40th — the one where I panicked because he didn't check with my office first — you know that stepping away from my firm has never come naturally to me.This time was different, and I want to be precise about why. It wasn't willpower. It wasn't a mindset trick. It was that I have spent the last stretch working hard on delegating — with Kim, in my coaching work — and I have built a team in my office that can run without me standing over it. I checked email. There were a few client matters I handled. But the office did not need me, and I felt that for the first time.The realization on the other side of it is the part I'd want you to take: the work was still there when I got back. Nothing was a crisis. Nothing fell apart. Which means it probably wouldn't have any of the other times either.The second half of the episode is about the other thing that made the trip work — habits. I have built health and wellness habits over years, and this was the trip that proved what they're for. I packed my supplements by the day. I finished my progressive overload program in the hotel gym. And then I made a decision I have never made before: I did not start my next program on schedule. I waited until I got home, until I could do it right. Art the Clown returns in three controlled deployments: a Terror Tram takeover built around an original storybook and metal Christmas covers from Ice Nine Kills, a dedicated photo op, and a character encounter. Nikki from Curry Barker's Obsession joins as a character experience two months after the film premiered, the kind of deal that only closes that fast with an independent creator. And Slash scored the Killceañera house with an original song the villain lip-syncs, delivering exposition as a ballad so good fans are already asking for it on Spotify. In April, Laura and her Explore Kissimmee group visited Discovery Cove, a limited-admission park owned by SeaWorld. Laura got great photos and had a lot of fun, but wishes the park provided more information about how and where these animals survive in the wild.

Meet Bert's Big Adventure kid, Payton aka Pjo!In April 2019, Pjo's mom and dad feared something was wrong. His mom, Deidra, got a call from Pjo's school that he had another fever (he was having them frequently), so they took him to Children's for testing.She was in such a fog that Deidre doesn't remember the conversation in the ER that night and can only remember that he was diagnosed with a mass on his spine- Stage 4 Neuroblastoma.Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that forms in certain types of nerve tissue. It most frequently starts from one of the adrenal glands but can also develop in the neck, chest, abdomen, or spine.Pjo immediately started an aggressive round of treatment- including port placement and biopsy, 6 months of chemo, tumor resection, radiation, 2 stem cell transplants, proton radiation, 6 months of immunotherapy (cancer-free three months in!) port removal, and then 3 months on a trial drug to hopefully help prevent relapse.Unfortunately, Pjo relapsed. From February through November of 2021, Pjo started his second full round of aggressive treatment- starting all over again. However, thankfully, he is currently in a CHOA trial maintenance therapy that seems to be going well.Pjo has significant hearing loss, his left eye gets infected easily (because of the radiation), he has asthma and kidney damage because of such rigorous treatment. From Deidra's perspective, COVID has limited access to playrooms, etc. within the hospital and things that used to make it easier/more fun to be there. She also has a lack of time to be with other parents who “get it” because of COVID and being restricted in getting together.Before the start of the pandemic, Payton received Make-A-Wish granting him a Disney Cruise vacation, first-class flights to and from Orlando for his family, and a day spent swimming with dolphins. However, his wish was pushed back several times because of COVID-19 and his immunocompromised state while he was in treatment. Eventually, Payton's family decided it made more sense to swap his wish for a camper so they could enjoy social-distanced family time.When GAMOA heard about this, they really wanted to make magic happen and grant this sweet child his original wish of flying first-class and swimming with the dolphins!
