This episode is on the campaign for equal marriage in the uk, sometimes referred to as gay marriage. The interviewee is Andrew Copson, Chief Executive of Humanists UK. Andrew was very much involved as a leader of the campaign which led legislation to allow same-sex marriage in England and Wales. The legislation was passed by the UK Parliament 10 years ago, in July 2013. In England and Wales, the first major campaign for same-sex marriage was Equal Love established by Peter Tatchell in 2010. The Coalition for Equal Marriage is a British campaign group created in 2012 by Conor Marron and James Lattimore, a same-sex couple, to petition in support of civil marriages for gay couples. There are strong lessons in here for groups looking to campaign across the political divide, tacking into the political and social zeitgeist and using broad coalitions to achieve change. Alfred Ip and Azan Marwah discuss the importance of marriage and the value of family within society, including same-sex couples. Such value needs to extend protections afforded to everyone as a fundamental right, also when things break down, for example in case of divorce. Alfred Ip provides practical reasons why same-sex couples should still get married (overseas): examples span from stamp duty to basic protections related to inheritance. He also comments on the high cost of time, pressure and money for individuals, the government and tax-payers to have these cases heard in court. Azan Marwah points out the need for more people to come forward and bring challenges in order to keep the pace of progress. Moreover, he highlights the rights that these individuals have in being protected by anonymity. The Modern Family and Equal Marriage by Grace Community Church
This Sunday June 28th is the anniversary of the raid on the Stonewall Inn and the riots that followed in New York in 1969These events gave rise to the modern Gay Pride movement which is celebrated at this time each year It is a time when we are given the opportunity to remember people who have suffered death, discrimination and persecution on account of their sexual orientation or gender identity issuesSo, during this week when we commemorate the Stonewall Riots can we make it our resolution to stand up for the rights of every person to live in the skin into which they have been born Whether that is rainbow coloured, or black, brown, white or any of the other marks that, on the surface, draw attention to our differences Skin colour is not a choice Sexual identity is not a choiceEach of us IS very different from every other person, but when we are injured and when we bleed, what come out is always redWe are all entitled to the same respect

The United States of America took a much needed step forward when the Supreme Court ruled that same sex marriage is an equal right. It probably comes as no surprise that the hosts of the ZTL podcast have supported this cause for some time and we couldn't be happier that the latest battle for equal rights can be moved past so we can take on the next challenge. Our conversation on this episode surrounds this momentous occasion but also touches on upcoming MOD Palm Springs event and a few other odds and ends.
For the 26th episode of For A' That, Andrew and I were joined by Peter McColl, who is the Rector of Edinburgh University and a member of the Green Party.Up for discussion were the recent moves in the Church of Scotland over permitting gay clergy and the Scottish Parliament dragging its heels over the issue of equal marriage, what's going on there?Secondly, Andrew feels that it might be more useful to draw parallels with Ireland in the independence debate, rather than as is usually done with Scandinavia. What could be the reasons for a certain reluctance to do so?Peter and Andrew held court as I waited to get into my stride after a hosting a Champions League final party the night before recording. We also got on to discussing the extra 5 million pounds the BBC is going to pump into its Scottish politics/referendum coverage. What kind of output can we expect? I was somewhat skeptical given the historical functions and output of the BBC, Andrew wondered if I wasn't being unnecessarily gloomy about the possibilities. Tonight on Liberal Dan Radio: I will go into several areas where some Conservatives just don't understand what is going on. This will be the first of many shows where I go into the recent arguments made at the Supreme Court on the topic of marriage equality. There is a lot of audio so this topic will be split over several shows. But on this show I want to talk about some arguements made by Conservatives on this issue that show they are out of touch. I also want to talk about the topic of Dr. Ben Carson. He is a well respected and well awarded Doctor who made history. However, he is also a conservative and he happens to be black. Conservatives must think that this affords him a pass. And when they raise him up as a possible Presidential Candidate and liberals attack his stances, the liberals are called racist. But who are the real racists here (if any)? Those topics, headlines, and more, tonight on Liberal Dan Radio: Talk from the left, that's right! Listening after the show? Discuss it here!
