Even though Black Friday doesn't mean what it once did, Bourbon County is still an event - and we have Ryan Tracy with us at Beer on the Wall to help us taste through this year's lineup of six from Goose Island. Sure we were banned from the official media tasting, but we assess the whole group fairly - and find some surprises that are real standouts in the history of BCBS. Also, shenanigans may be afoot at FoBAB in regards to our Fantasy League; Ryan T. and Craig have a proposed wardrobe swap; we discuss BCBS variants that “don't exist”; Tracy shares a Rare Day story that can only lead to bias; we can't help but fondle the box; and we are finally sponsored by Jazz, the style of music. And don't miss out on our annual trip through Bourbon Country. These farmers spend a full year getting to know DTN's Pamela Smith as they work through  weekly calls and check-ins, sharing their stories and their seasons with the broader farm community. Today, we're sitting down with Quint Pottinger, a farmer from Bourbon Country in Kentucky who's been growing an unconventional row crop operation alongside his dad's since 2012. We'll talk with Quint about his path back to the farm, which included experiments with tomatoes, feed corn for deer, and even a challenging dance with rye. We'll dig into his strategy for financing his operation, which includes bringing in outside investors while maintaining majority ownership over the family business. Then we'll dive deep into Quint's deep dedication to not only growing the farm economically and protecting the environmental sustainability of the land, but also to nurturing his community — through economic investments in his employees, his local town of New Haven, and in the way he thinks about markets and opportunities in the future.

Bourbon continues to be a "go to" for guys who want to move away from cheap beer and fruity drinks, and I support it.  It's a crazy big world of choices that are mind boggling, even to seasoned bourbon hunters. My guest today is definitely a guy who can help us traverse the multi-leveled landscape of the bourbon world.  Derek works in the heart of Bourbon Country at one of the premier distilleries on the Bourbon Trails of Kentucky.  He'll explain the difference between whiskey and bourbon, highlighting that bourbon must adhere to specific laws, including being at least 51% corn and made in America.  We'll also touch on the rise in popularity of bourbon in recent years.  He'll give us a run down of the ingredients of bourbon, including corn, rye or wheat, and malted barley, and explain how the barrel contributes to the flavor and complexity of bourbon.  You'll learn about the timeline for aging bourbon, and how he believes that between eight and 12 years is the magic number for optimal flavor.   Just like diamonds, he and I agree that personal preference plays a significant role as to which bourbon is right for you.  And of course there is the thrill of collecting bourbons and sharing a pour or two with your friends.  (He'll even give a quick tutorial on the correct way to sip it.  Freakin' great!) Ultimately, according to Derek, there is no wrong way to drink a worthy bourbon.  Cheers!  If you need expert advice about something you don't know much about, and need a little guidance, send me an email at andy@buylikeaguy.com and I'll do my best to cover it in an upcoming show.  If you're “that guy,” (and of course you can be a woman) that people should hear from because you know your sh*t about a certain subject, please reach out to me, and let's talk about how we can work together. Earlier this month, a group of Thompson Hospitality employees made their way to Bourbon Country in Kentucky to ensure the company's restaurants were able to provide a little extra something special for their guests next year. Those employees embarked on a tour of the James B. Beam and Maker's Mark distilleries for the purpose of selecting bourbon barrels exclusive to the company, or single barrel selects. The group was able to choose their own single barrels by sampling from several barrels selected by the master distillers. Those barrels will then be bottled and shipped to the company – with an estimated delivery in the spring – where they will be used to create unique cocktails only available at Thompson's restaurants; no two barrels are ever the same. This uniqueness is what has drawn the Thompson team to Kentucky a second year in a row for this process.

Origin Series: New core product collection features Straight Bourbon, Bottled-in-Bond and Rye whiskies distilled and aged at the brand's Bardstown homeplace.  Six years after their first whiskey was distilled, Bardstown Bourbon Company, one of the largest and most sophisticated distilleries in the country, will release its first estate-distilled collection of whiskies in early 2023. The Origin Series introduces consumers to the modern brand's core product line through three distinct 6-year-old whiskies: Origin Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Origin Bottled-in-Bond and Origin Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey.  The full series, all of which has been distilled, aged and bottled at Bardstown Bourbon Co., will be distributed to retailers in 24 states, at the distillery gift shop, and via a number of online retailers. “The Origin Series is the first opportunity to taste an expression that is 100 percent our whiskey,” said Dan Callaway, VP of Product Development for Bardstown Bourbon Co. “We've put years of patience into this bottle, waiting six years until we felt it was truly ready to share with the world. The full technical capabilities of our distillery are on display with these three bespoke products.”  Origin Series Bourbon is a 6-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. This 36 percent high-rye mash bill showcases the best of classic bourbon with a burst of rye spice. A balanced blend of apricot, orange blossom, and mint rests on caramel, nutmeg, and rich oak unfolds on the nose. On the palate, waves of cinnamon and vanilla lead to a bold, signature lasting finish. Origin Series Bourbon is presented at 96 proof (48 percent ABV) for a suggested price of $44.99. Wheated Bottled-in-Bond presents the best locally sourced corn and wheat grains in this 6-year-old straight bourbon whiskey. This bourbon features 20 percent wheat in the mashbill, creating a beautifully balanced modern expression.  Baked peach with cream meets cocoa with hints of lemon on the nose. An indulgent, smooth mouthfeel of stone fruit and toffee leads to an alluring and enduring finish. Origin Series Bottled-in-Bond is presented at 100 proof (50% ABV) for a suggested price of $49.99. Kentucky Straight Rye is finished in custom barrels comprised of alternating toasted American oak and toasted cherry wood staves. This finishing process creates a wholly unique flavor unlike anything seen in the rye category. Ripe cherry resonates through toasted oak, highlighted by white flower, dill, and cinnamon. A rich, round mouthfeel bursts with fruit flavor leading to a one-of-a-kind sublime finish. Origin Series Kentucky Straight Rye is presented at 96 proof (48% ABV) for a suggested price of $69.99.  In addition to the three core products, the launch of the Origin Series will include for the first time, a single barrel program for Bardstown Bourbon Co. A limited number of Origin Series Bourbon single barrels will be available annually for purchase by the barrel to on- and off-premise retailers. Each retailer will be able to hand-select their unique single barrel on-site at Bardstown Bourbon Co.   Origin Series Bourbon: Mashbill: 60 percent corn, 36 percent rye, 4 percent malted barley Proof:     96 proof (48% ABV) SRP:     $44.99   Origin Series Bottled-in-Bond: Mashbill: 68 percent corn, 20 percent wheat, 12 percent malted barley Proof:     100 proof (50% ABV) Price:     $49.99   Origin Series Kentucky Straight Rye: Mashbill:  95 percent rye, 5 percent malted barley Proof:     96 proof (48% ABV) Price:     $69.99   Since 2016, Bardstown Bourbon Co. has grown from a 600,000 proof gallon per year distillery to the 7th largest in America, custom distilling and bottling more than 7 million proof gallons per year. In this time, when many would release un-aged spirits, the brand has instead become known for its boundary-defying approach to bourbon blending, pulling from both old and newer stock, a variety of mashbills and origins to create single-release products. Founded in the spirit of bringing transparency to an industry often cloaked in secrecy and lore, Bardstown Bourbon Co. has established itself through not only custom distillation but also unprecedented collaboration with a number of spirits brands.  About Bardstown Bourbon Company: Founded in 2014 by Peter Loftin in the heart of Bourbon Country on 100 acres of active farmland, Bardstown Bourbon Company, 1500 Parkway Drive, Bardstown, Ky., is one of the country's most modern and technically advanced whiskey distilleries. Bo and Blake talk college football and the Y'all Lifestyle in the first hour of the show live in the BankPlus Studio. The guys start the morning with a recap of an exciting Monday Night Football game in the NFL. Bo hits on the ironic stat of the season as Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers is out-passing Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, something that hasn't happened often, if ever. The guys hit on some SEC football records as Ole Miss hosts Auburn this weekend in Oxford, and Bo wonders why former Ole Miss and Arkansas head coach Houston Nutt never got another job. Bo asks listeners to weigh in on an interesting interaction his daughter had with a DUI checkpoint over the weekend. Bo announces this week's edition of the 2022 CSpire Conerly Trophy Watchlist highlighting the best college football player in Mississippi. Bo hits the top player for the state's premier colleges and universities as we hit the halfway point of the season. With just six games left on most schedules, the race for the 2022 CSpire Conerly Trophy is heating up. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
