Send us a textIn this episode, we take a serious look at the popular YouTube channel  @Truthunedited  and its controversial “Testing Christianity” series by Ron Charles. With over 100 million views, his teachings are spreading confusion about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We examine his five-question "test" of Christianity and compare it directly to the Bible. Is his theology biblically sound—or spiritually dangerous? Join us as we confront false teaching, defend the Gospel, and pray for truth to prevail.“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits." (Matthew 7:15-16)Keep me honest! “Do as I do, be as I am. “ Jesus Christ “When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.”  Paulo Coelho (author of The Alchemist) Sometimes we forget who we are.  Sometimes we think, is this all there is?  And if that is true, what is the point of all of this?  We all can feel stuck.  Trapped even. Unable to get out of the web of the choices we made to get to this point. And then when you are so wrapped in that silky meshy mess, panicking that the gross scary spider is going to come and get you that you lose sight of everything but the panic! The fear! The NEED to get OUT before the monster gets you! Then before you know it, this is what your life is - survival and fear. Trapped in a web and trying to get out.   No longer are you actually going anywhere.  You are just GETTING OUT. But “getting out” is not a destination.  And OUT! Is driven by fear which has us thrashing around so much that we just wrap the web even thigh around ourselves so it is now even harder to achieve. It is like one of those Chinese finger traps, you played with as a kid - the harder you pull against it, the tighter it binds you.  But if we stop thrashing and fighting and fearing The Monster (the unknown).  If we breathe and take a moment and ask ourselves.  Where am I? Who am I? Where am I going? What do I actually want? Where do I want to go? What do I WANT to be doing right now? (in the positive, the answer can't be ESCAPING or ESCAPISM behavior). If all options are on the table, what would I actually choose to be doing to spend my time if I wasn't so scared and spending all my energy beating back the tides of change, fear, and all the things I don't want?  If you could articulate in the positive a destination. I want to be writing a book.  I want to go to the gym twice a week.  I want a job that fulfills me. I want to have a conversation with my partner. I want an abundant family. I want to laugh. Do you see where I am going with this?  What can you articulate in the positive?  What do you aspire for yourself?  And yeah maybe your mind will say it's a pipe dream.  But you know what?  It is YOUR pipe dream.  And if it brings you joy and light - why is it silly to aspire for that, and to do that, instead of just surviving? instead of just “getting away from THIS.”   Because running away is not a destination.  Getting away is not a goal. It is running from the monster.  Running away from the monster is not running to something at all - it is getting you lost deeper in the woods and going right into the belly of the beast.   If you feel trapped and depressed or scared of what is to come.  What if you were not spending all of your time on surviving, on beating back the fear, or trying to get away?  If you hate your job and every night you come home and drink a bottle of wine - what is that doing?  That is just numbing the pain from the job you hate.  Is it getting you a new job that is fulfilling?  Is it raising your vibration to a place where you can see a new alternative?  Is it giving you anything but escape?  Yeah you are surviving the pain.  But is that a life?  Surviving and enslaved to something you hate?   Our negative ego is a real motherfucker.  It makes us believe that running away is a solution.  It says STAY SAFE!  Don't leave this box. HIDE! Outside this box is failure - is the inability to pay your bills. Outside, is the eternal question, are you dying alone?  Because it says you are not good enough.  You don't deserve nice things.  You are not capable. No one likes you.  That is for other people.  Other people write books, other people take fabulous vacations, other people get graduate degrees and careers they actually enjoy.  It is an insidious record that keeps playing over and over again - that keeps you thrashing in the spider web you spun yourself. Keeps you making choices that keep you trapped in a cycle of fear and miserable-ness and not progressing toward something that will actually bring you satisfaction and joy.   And here is the secret.  It is not in some new age book from the early 2000s called, The Secret or even just positive thinking, or in that next social media influencers webinar about the 10 steps to financial freedom and happiness.  It is none of those things.  It is in the most simple (but hard to practice) axiom of Know Thyself.  Know thyself as God. Know thy own needs and wants. Your thoughts create your reality. Hermetic Principle #1 - All is Mind.  99% of your success in creating a change in your life comes from how you feel about the situation because every feeling creates a thought, and every thought is acted upon. So if we feel good about where we are going, and are actually consciously choosing where we are going, and know in your heart of hearts that where you are going is what you actually want to do - then you will follow that gratitude filled feeling, into a gratitude and hope filled thought, then apply consistency and discipline to carry out actions daily (little bits every day) that get you somewhere new that you actually WANT to be.  And after some effort you will find yourself free of your bondage and looking forward to even more amazing things as you take action in the present moment.  But until YOU CHOOSE an actual DESTINATION that you want and desire then you will never ever be able to get there. Because no one ever gets anywhere when you are running away from your life.  This is your life.  You only get one.  What do you want to be spending your precious minutes on?  How much time and energy have you spent  beating back the fear?  What is the worst that could happen if you paused and surrendered to whatever you are avoiding and chose what you actually want? Then and only then do you realize just how futile and useless the fight that fear is.  How irrelevant - and that all your writhing and drama and gesticulation was just an ugly dance that you can stop. And finally, with clarity and simplicity you can step out from by deciding with discernment and your will to set your mind, your thoughts, words and acts toward the true desire you have in your heart of hearts, for the best and highest good.  Then you will be free of the bonds of the web you wove. The box you stapled yourself into and you can live as the god/goddess you truly are and start creating your reality.  And THIS is the magick that Jesus spoke of and embodied as a Hermetic teacher. This is why he was able to create miracles - and was trying to teach us to do the same. “Do as I do. Be as I am.”  “Everything I can do, you can do and more.”  Jesus Christ was a Hermetic Teacher.  When he was alive there was no such thing as Christianity.  There was Judaism and Jesus was ethnically Hebrew and he is referred to as a Rabbi but he wasn't Jewish either. In the annals of time and translation rabbi simply meant teacher.  And Jesus was just that - a teacher of Hermetics. Hermetics and any Hermetic principle is from the mind of God. It is the understanding of God's mind without human pollution.  If it is Hermetic it will benefit people and always be good.  Because God does no harm. Hermetics creates clarity which simplifies life - thus increasing our potential to act as God in this life.  Whereas the human mind creates complications and traps us in fictions and stories. And ultimately this is what Jesus was teaching - and like good humans we have complicated his words and made a religion out of him which separates what he could do from what we can do.  Which is the exact opposite of his teaching.  “Do as I do. Be as I am.” In other words “Act like the God/Goddess you are.  Master your mind by doing the will of God.”  Jesus was and is one of the greatest teachers for humanity in all time - and as a master of light he mastered his negative ego completely in this physical life and as a result could create miracles. He used every single one of his gifts as a human being for its intended purpose in its intended way.  And although he was special (because he had a unique mission to bring the ray of love and compassion to this planet for all of us to experience) his message to all of us was that HE WAS NOT SPECIAL. In that everything he could do, we can do.  Our job is to LISTEN to him, to take him as an example of possibility and to start living that possibility.  And through his teachings become the teachings - just as he was.   Now he did some amazing party tricks (though turning water into wine back in the day just made the water safe to drink) he also defied the laws of physics, cleared negativity, and cured the sick.  However, the potential to do all of this is within us as well. And humans have created miracles again and again.  The examples we have from the gospels (albeit told through the lens of religion, politics, two hundred or more years, translation from aramaic to greek to latin to english) are examples of a clear will (desire from a place of purity) applied with the rules of Hermetics and the power inherent in this existence as a fully actualized human being connected to spirit acknowledging our power as God - you can have a major impact on this physical world. You can defy the laws of physics.  You can create miracles.  You can just simply live a joyful life.  But it all starts by setting your will in motion and remembering that you are god.  You are a powerful being that can affect your reality through your feelings, thoughts, choices and actions.   With Jesus we weren't supposed to start a religion.  We were supposed to discern.  To learn. To follow in his footsteps versus follow him.  If we say “Jesus take the wheel!” you abdicate responsibility for your life and that is in the exact opposite of what he was getting at for us.  Did we ever hear of Jesus saying “Father DO everything FOR me?”  Yet we do this all the time with Jesus, with our jobs, by blaming other people, by pouring our sorrows into a bottle or any other substance.  We abdicate our responsibility and we run away to our hiding place prison and we stay safe in our survival mechanisms.   Bringing me back to my point.  All of us forget how powerful we are from time to time. Or maybe we have no fucking clue we have any power at all.  We forget or are completely ignorant that in most cases we actually hold the keys to let ourselves out from our chosen prison.  We are all at some point like the figures in the The Devil card of the Rider Waite Tarot deck -held in chains to a big hairy winged beast of a problem but the chains are actually loose enough to simply lift off of our necks, if we desire to remove them.  We chain ourselves to the false God (the thing outside of ourselves that is not us).  We chain ourselves to the Devil, to a demon, to a false idol, we make something or something else God, and we deny our own power. We say we have no choice.  We had to.  I need this escape to cope because I can't leave him or her.  I can't leave my job.  I'll die if I remove the chains of slavery.  But you won't - the truth is you've abdicated your power and voluntarily chained yourself to the external thing and forgotten your power as God.  As the author of your story.  As the determinant of your own destiny.  Then you've focused on staying safe, or getting away, or NOT being in the chains you feel trapped in.   I've been personally chewing on all of this because recently I felt a little bit trapped by my own circumstances.  Even though I KNEW LOGICALLY that it was all my choice and all really for the good.  But in preparing for the Florida Bar Exam for over 7 months it started to take a toll on me and I began to forget why I was doing it.  And as my ability to focus on my business was distracted by study, my partner's health, my own arthritis pain, my sense of lack when some things didn't go as planned and I was disappointed by some individuals. I spent every last bit of my effort preparing for the test then used what little I had left to move twice and learn how to be in a new cohabitation situation. And with my distractions and the challenges - I stopped flowing the normal abundant client load I usually do for a myriad of reasons.  And of course I started getting concerned that I didn't have enough time or money and my thoughts and feelings turned to lack and fear and this just enhanced the worry and lack and thus had me starting to feel trapped.  Trapped because passing the bar is a big slow thing and Seattle is far away from my home in Florida, and trapped because I have to be vulnerable in my relationship and I can't run away anymore.  And trapped because I have to communicate about my finances and don't have the same overflow I'm used to.  All of these things were not helpful. Because I said before 99% of your success is how you FEEL about something versus the actual tactical logical work you put into it.  So here I was working in a way that SHOULD have resulted in my usual flow but it wasn't - but the thing that was off was my fear.  It was my lack mentality.  Plans are definitely still helpful but your own thoughts will destroy the best plan.  So as long as I feel scared and trapped and in lack, that is the energy I am going to attract.  And no one wants a worried estate planning attorney or an abundance & flow coach who is in lack.   But luckily I have a practice and a path to follow and a community of lightworkers to recharge in.  I have teachings and things to study that can bring me around and back to my core purpose, strengthen my will, and turn me back to gratitude.  So this trap was a brief mindset blip and now that I'm out of the gauntlet I can actually start holding gratitude for the bar exam and the time to work on client flow, teamwork with my new team members and communication with my love and life partner.  I remember why I am doing this work.  My law license allows me to help so many families create plans that will protect them in their time of need.  And my purpose and mission in light work helps me remember I am not trapped.  I am choosing this.  I will allow the  will of God to flow through me.  And use Jesus as a light and as a master teacher guiding my heart in every moment. Because that is where he has been since I was a small child, guiding me to live as he lived.  Do as he did. To be in my life an embodiment of his teachings in my unique way in this physical life.  There is nothing to run away from. I am not stuck in any trap. I choose everything and I can remove any obstacle. And I have built a beautiful life based on my choices and I will continue to do so.  A joyful life doesn't result from things being easy or handed to you - in fact sometimes the hardest things in life bring the most value.   I laugh as I wonder which was harder?  The Florida Bar exam or  being vulnerable and in true partnership with another human being. .  To be honest, I know it is the latter.  Taking a test and getting a piece of paper is easy. I've done it time and time again. Helping people as a lawyer is easy.  I've done it time and time again.  But being in a relationship with someone I love and who loves me, growing myself and actualizing myself as  an authentic human being is incredibly challenging! Don't get me wrong - I have prayed and manifested this type of partnership and love, but that doesn't make it not terrifying. To be even more honest, sometimes coexisting and being in real love with my person, scares the living shit out of me.  Because my negative ego is constantly being proved wrong.  I am lovable separate from the things I provide to people in this world. What a concept? I feel like - even now I have to say it twice to truly believe it. I AM LOVEABLE DESPITE WHAT SERVICE I CAN PROVIDE FOR OTHERS! … and you are too.  I am God. YOU ARE GOD. WE ARE GOD.  Fully worthy of giving and receiving tremendous amounts of love + prosperity. So let's start creating some miracles - shall we?  The homework for this episode is simple - well that is, if you allow it to be.  Love yourself like your life depends on it - because it does. Know Thyself. Know God. Do as God would do. And CHOOSE to love yourself more than your struggle. Don't overthink it - just start - a small change in the right direction can make a huge impact. And if you get lost along the way and need further inspiration - I can help with that! Drop me a line at angel@LatterellLaw.com. I will leave you in the words of author Roald Dahl  “And above all watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always in the most unlikely places.  Those who don't believe in magick will never find it.”

This episode in our 'Sprit of Jesus' series serves as a little bit of a recap on what we've covered in Matthew 6 so far, as well as pushing further into Jesus' words revealing the Father: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal..."In other words, anything that can be taken from you, will be taken from you because by definition, if something can be taken from you it is temporary. What is temporary does not last and will be taken away. What is Eternal can never be added to or taken away. Find your treasure, store up your treasure on what is Eternal and you will find that you have a Life that can never be taken away or diminished.

He's not very religious but realized he had a lot in common with them. They care about the same things. They're very honest. What he learned from his mother and father: Father - Do well when you follow the rules. Be detail oriented. Honest. Trustworthy. Mother - She has a more "cheeky side." She breaks the rules. Deep connection isn’t just about relationships with other people. It’s about feeling the fullness of being alive. It’s about being enveloped in multiple layers of belonging within, between, and around us. Four Levels of connection: Connecting with yourself Connecting with the people around you Connecting with the natural world Connecting with the transcendent Tradition -- "We mistake tradition for convention. Tradition is the beating heart, convention is the outer expression." A college football team can change their uniforms and not lose tradition. The uniforms are a form of outer expression. You change symbols as you grow. Preaching at its best is a conversation with the congregation. Ancient texts are so valuable. The Bible is a description of how life is... Casper shares what it was like growing up in England and not fitting in... His home life was great. His school life was awful. Connection: Willing to change Forged in flames Honesty & commitment to each other Science is stable - we value being in tribes. There's less of a connection to places and family. There is a decline in religious communities. Why has there been a decrease? Productivity has become so important. To be productive, relationships are sacrificed. Priorities have shifted. We are missing opportunities to go deep with people At work: Younger people show up at a job for the meaning of the company... The military: Soldiers care about the people they are shoulder to shoulder with... They honor their culture. As a manager: Replicate water cooler moments (virtually). 30 minutes snippets on zoom. Invite people to go deeper. Use question prompts - create safe spaces. It's an interesting time for relationship design. He's created "The Confession Group" The leader needs to model vulnerability but hold the boundaries. Have a place where people can go to admit they screwed up -- 10 minutes to share, 10 minutes to ask questions Discipline: Take a tech sabbath -- Each Friday, Casper hides his phone and computer. It's rest time. Sabbath - "The apex of life." What we practice is what we become "We all worship something. We just don't know what we're worshiping." The paradigm of how we see ourselves in the world.

Reading 1 Acts 6:1-7 As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith. Reading 2 1 Pt 2:4-9 Beloved: Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God, and, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it says in Scripture: Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame. Therefore, its value is for you who have faith, but for those without faith: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, and A stone that will make people stumble, and a rock that will make them fall. They stumble by disobeying the word, as is their destiny. You are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises” of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Gospel Jn 14:1-12 Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way.” Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.”

How do you view the Father? Do we see him as a figure of condemnation and judgement or a person of kindness? All the way through Scripture, the Father continually shows his fairness, love and kindness to his people.
Are we guilty of projecting our own selfish desires onto God, or are we prepared to recognise him as one who goes after the guilty to show them love and compassion?

Faith Baptist Church of Mason City (Sermons)

We are a world of distracted people. We turn on our TVs for an escape from reality. We put on our headphones to drown out the noise of the world. We endlessly gaze at our cell phones oblivious to those around us. As the Church, it’s time that we listen to Jesus and “lift up our eyes” and see the people around us as He saw them; those who are lost and in need of a Savior! 3 Outcomes 1. When you lift up your eyes it satisfies a lingering hunger (John 4:31-34). 2. When you lift up your eyes it fulfills an urgent need (John 4:35). 3. When you lift up your eyes it provides a rewarding life (John 4:36-38). Application: 1. Is your “food to do the will of the Father?” Do you feel as if your Christian life is empty or lacking? If so, there’s a good chance that you’re hungering for something the world can’t satisfy. 2. Are you oblivious to the lost around you? What do you need to lift up your eyes from in order to see the harvest? 3. Is your life focused on something that could be lost or taken from you? Jesus says that dedicating your life to advance the gospel is a rewarding life that can never be taken from you!

New City Church - Messages

Summary: Open to the God who EmpowersPhilip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. John 14:8-14The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. “Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’? Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’” Luke 17:5-10

John 14:8-17, 25-27 (NRSV)Philip said to [Jesus], “Lord, show us the Father and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and still you do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say I do not speak on my own, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask for anything, I will do it.“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.”I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”Even though we hear a lot about it on Pentecost Sunday, most of us know Lutherans aren’t much for speaking in tongues. It happened for the folks in Babel, back in Genesis, and it happened for the earliest disciples that day in Jerusalem, which we heard from the book of Acts – the Spirit of God moved so dramatically that people began speaking in languages they never knew they knew. It was surprising and bizarre enough that those who heard them thought they must have been drunk. And I get that. It sounds bizarre enough as I stand here today. I’ve grown up in the Lutheran church and have yet to see the spirit move in such a way. And, truth be told, I’m cynical enough to admit that I probably wouldn’t believe it if I did. And even though I work hard to never tell God what God can and cannot do, I don’t expect I’ll be speaking in tongues anytime soon. But if you’ve been anywhere near social media this week – Facebook, Twitter, YouTube – I imagine you’ve seen this video of a young father talking to his toddler-sized son. It even made its way to CNN one evening, it had gone so viral. But just in case you haven’t seen it – and just because it’s too impossibly cute – I think we should watch it now. For those of you who don’t know – or think you’re not understanding or hearing things correctly – you are. This kid isn’t saying anything with words you need to understand – which is the point, really.Who among us hasn’t carried on a conversation with an infant or a toddler?Who would believe the words and sounds a grown man or woman can produce – goo-goo-ing and ga-ga-ing with the best of them – in order to get a child to smile or laugh or sleep or stop crying? Who hasn’t pretended to understand – or actually knew exactly – what a babbling baby was trying to say through non-sensical sounds and squeals, of their own?Well, baby talk isn’t exactly speaking in tongues, but it did get me thinking about the Holy Spirit and with the events surrounding the Tower of Babel… that first Pentecost in Jerusalem… and most importantly, with what God is calling us to as we gather to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, the birthday of the Church and this Pentecost Sunday, so many generations later.First of all, I always like to remember that there’s more to the Tower of Babel story than what most of us learned in Sunday School. There’s more to the story than just that God punished the Israelites for building the tower; that God punished the Israelites for trying to be like God; and that God’s punishment was to confuse their language and to scatter them throughout the world, so that I would speak English and need a translator in Paris, or Prague or Port-au-Prince.No, the key to the story isn’t just that people wanted to be like God. The key to the story isn’t just that God punished them for it by confusing their languages. And the key to the story isn’t all about God’s vengeance and anger. The key to the story – much of the sin of the people at Babel – was their desire to set up camp, to stay put and keep to themselves. The sin of the people of Babel was that they neglected to be about multiplying and growing and newness and change. See, the people of God are called to be about sharing grace with all creation in whatever ways they can manage, and the Tower of Babel was wrong for a lot of reasons, but the major malfunction was the attempt to keep good news and blessing and the power of God all for themselves – and all in one place.Which puts our reading from Acts into better perspective, for me. See Babel wasn’t the first or the last time that the people of God would screw things up. The Old Testament is all about the many and various ways that generation after generation after generation of God’s people kept getting it wrong. They had forgotten their call to be a blessing for creation – and they kept on forgetting it.And then Jesus showed up.God sent Jesus as the clearest reminder of what love, grace, forgiveness, mercy and sacrifice look and feel like. God sent Jesus to let humanity know that the cries of God’s people have been heard. But no matter how clear the message; no matter how dramatic the reminder; no matter how amazing his teaching and preaching and healing; no matter how awesome his death and resurrection were, God – and Jesus – had a pretty good hunch we still wouldn’t get it right all of the time, even after Jesus showed us how to do it.And even if, like Phillip in this morning’s Gospel, we can’t always see it or say it or wrap our brains around just who or what the Holy Spirit is in our life or for the world, it’s clear that – in the context of these Pentecost stories – God doesn’t give up on us. God never stops speaking. Like that dad in the video, God always hears and understands the wants, the needs and the longings of God’s people. And that, to me, is what our lesson for Pentecost and the promise and gift of the Holy Spirit are all about this morning. God will go to any length, not only to share love with us, but so that we will share God’s love with the world – in whatever way we can manage. The gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the gift of Jesus’ ministry, death and resurrection and even the gift of the confused tongues and the scattering at Babel are examples of God’s willingness and ability to hear and understand the heart of God’s people, in hopes that we will, with God’s help, do the same. And God speaks in the strangest ways still – in the promise of water at baptism and in the forgiveness of bread and wine during communion. Sometimes the message is clear in the words of a well-crafted sermon – we hope – or through a perfectly prayed prayer. Sometimes God’s message of love is just as clear through the messy presence of a loved one while we’re grieving; or through a stumbling confession and the gracious offering of forgiveness. Whatever the case, the message can seem inconceivable – that we are loved without condition; that even we are forgiven and that even they can be too; that this grace is ours as much as it is theirs; that God wants us as much as God wants them; that God so loved – and that God so loves – the whole wide world. It’s all meant to bring joy and comfort and peace to the world – to the nations – to the Church, just the same – still fussing and fighting and screaming and pouting and trying too often to keep the good stuff to ourselves. So let us believe that the promises of resurrection and new life are ours. Let us trust the sounds of grace among us – no matter how crazy and unbelievable or hard to explain that may be. And, let us hear the invitation from God to speak and share something new about our faith and God’s love for the sake of the world. It will bring joy and peace to the world around us. It is the promise of life lived under the influence of the Spirit. And it is the hope of God for all creation.Amen

Perhaps you, like me, have heard people say, “Man, you’re just like your father!” or “Oh, you’re so much like your mom!” Or maybe, as a parent yourself, you’ve observed the same reality with your own kids. Family resemblance is a real thing. We share similarities in physical appearance, facial expressions, hand gestures, voice inflections, personality traits, patterns of thinking, and so on. But the important question for us is this: Is what’s true from a physical perspective also true from a spiritual perspective? As people observe your life—your character and conduct—do they say, “Wow, you’re just like your heavenly Father”? Do they detect a family resemblance? That’s what we’re going to consider this Sunday as we study Ephesians 4:32-5:2. The apostle Paul has some practical things to tell us about how and why we should bear a striking resemblance to our Father God. The Sixth Spiritual Lesson: Your fear is from the spirit against Christ. "God does not reveal himself through fear, pressure or confusion. This where the spirit against Christ reveals himself." Questions: What are your ideas and images of god the Father and how do they differ from what Jesus teaches us about the Father? Do you see the Father as someone who pressures you to do things? Where does fear drive your relationship with the Father? Recall your latest experience of peace, stillness, clarity and gratitude in God and believe that that is how the Father draws you? The Seventh Spiritual Lesson: God's will is found in your will when you are in Christ. "God's will, His desire for you, is not out there somwhere! It is found in your own desire when you are in Christ! That is the will of God for you!"
