"I'll be the judge of that!" Karen discusses the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and common misconceptions regarding employee compensation, specifically regarding meal periods and overtime. She emphasizes the importance of employers correctly classifying employees as exempt or non-exempt, and the potential financial consequences of misclassification. She also clarifies that employers are not required to provide meal periods, but if they do, they must pay employees for that time. Contrary to popular belief, employees are entitled to be compensated for all hours worked during a work week, including on-call time, training, and travel time. The Job Judge also answers the question of whether employees should be required to share a hotel room when traveling for work. The Job Judge Podcast is a podcast for anyone who works. This is not legal advice! Engaging and informative, it's a must-listen/watch for any manager, business owner, HR professional, or anyone who works. Relying on three decades of experience as an employment law attorney and HR Executive, Karen Michael uses real case studies in the news and navigates through the legal landmines and workplace dysfunction that we know is probably happening right now in your organization.

President Joe Biden finalized a 5.2% federal pay raise for many civilian employees for 2024. But it's important to note the 5.2% figure is only an average. The actual numbers federal employees will see in their paychecks next year depend on where they work, thanks to locality pay. Biden's alternative pay plan called for a 4.7% across-the-board raise that all feds on the General Schedule receive, plus an average of a 0.5% locality-based adjustment. Most federal employees are inching toward what will likely be a 5.2% pay raise in 2024. But even that big of a boost won't be enough to offset the growing wage gap between the federal and private sectors of the nationwide workforce, according to the Federal Salary Council. Over the last year, federal employees earned on average 27.54% less in wages than their private sector counterparts. The Federal Salary Council, composed of federal and labor leaders, reported the updated number in a public meeting Tuesday. It's more than a 3% increase in the pay disparity since the council's previous report of a 24.09% wage gap during 2022. The percentage-based pay gap has remained in the low- and mid-twenties for several years, and has stayed consistently above 20% since March 2007, the Federal Salary Council working group noted in its latest report. Nearly 33,000 federal employees are almost set to receive a little more in their paychecks starting in 2024, thanks to new proposed rules from the Office of Personnel Management to establish four new locality pay areas. Many federal unions and organizations have lauded OPM's proposal, but at the same time, federal manager advocacy groups said these relatively small tweaks to locality pay are only the tip of the iceberg. “Creating new locality pay zones when systemic compensation issues holistically undermine the government's competitive posture is akin to rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic,” Senior Executives Association President Marcus Hill said in a July 7 letter to the President's Pay Agent. “It is not enough.” Learn more about your ad choices. Many people investing for retirement know that it is risky, dangerous and stupid to try to time the market. Then repeat as necessary until your bank account is overflowing or all your hair has fallen out. Whichever comes first. Opponents of the by-low-sell-high, repeat-as-necessary system include Warren Buffet, many Americans’ favorite billionaire and the late John Bogle, founder of Vanguard. Both said they couldn’t do it and they never met anyone who could. Still, lots of people — now with the ‘help’ of apps — think they can. Following President Trump's executive order confirming federal employee pay raises, the average employee will receive a 3.1% pay raise.  Now, we all know what often happens when we get a raise. The first few paychecks are really exciting and the extra pay feels like a nice bump. Then, we adjust to the higher amount by expanding our spending and after a couple of months we don't even remember getting a pay raise.    Now, it doesn't have to be this way. A pay raise is a great time to up our savings without even feeling it. It can be as easy as contributing your raise to your TSP every pay period. Once you set it up, you don't even have to think about it. On top of that, you don't even have to spend less because you were already used to the amount you were receiving every two weeks.  This may seem like a small change but it can make a big difference come retirement. Let's say you make $80,000 a year and with a 3% raise you'd make $82,400. If you took the extra $200 a month and invested it in your TSP. Over the course of your career (let's say 20 years with a 8% return) that one change would add over 100k to your TSP balance. Now think what would happen if you put more of your pay raises in the TSP? The effects are powerful. Now answer this question. When is the best time to contribute more to your TSP? Answer: 20 Years ago. Second Best Answer: Right Now. Don't let what you've done or didn't do get you down. Start investing more today to make tomorrow incredible.
