The author Jacob Bacharach returns for a show about Ridley Scott's latest, the 200 million dollar epic Napoleon, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby. History nerds, YouTube film cranks and the Roman statue bluechecks on Twitter are up in arms about the latest from the Riddler, for straying too far from the real history and most egregiously for hiring their beloved Joker to portray their beloved Emperor of France as a cucked loser. Jacob and I highly enjoyed it as old Hollywood spectacle and as a strange historical comedy about a horny weirdo, hilariously sold to the masses as a badass action film with Black Sabbath in the trailer.  We also compare this Napoleon to previous attempts to depict him in cinema, with special emphasis on 1970's Waterloo, a spectacular and extremely expensive recreation of that fateful battle starring Rod Steiger and Christopher Plummer as the Duke of Wellington, literally a co-production between Dino De Laurentiis and the Soviet Union!  It's fashionable in some circles to complain about Ridley Scott but we discuss some movies of his we like, our hopes for the extended version, and discuss some fun facts about the Napoleonic Era including his horny letters to Josephine and an explanation of the French Revolutionary Calendar. Plus: Napoelon Musk, finally facing his Waterloo after an assault on advertisers at a New York Times summit. Editor - Sam Restivo NAPOLEON editor Sam Restivo credits the dutiful mentoring of editor Claire Simpson ACE for how he found himself co-chairing the editorial duties for Ridley Scott's latest film.  Sam first worked with Claire as her assistant editor on the tv series RAISED BY WOLVES (2020).  From there, Claire brought Sam as her assistant to his first Ridley Scott feature, THE LAST DUEL (2021).  He would assist Claire one more time for Scott's HOUSE OF GUCCI (2021) before getting the promotion for NAPOLEON. Ridley Scott's Napoleon is a “breathless rollick” says Irish Times chief film correspondent Donald Clarke; Joaquin Phoenix makes the character his own and Vanessa Kirby is a terrific Josephine. But since its release, historians have been carping from the aisles pointing out the inaccuracies in the sprawling blockbuster. Among other things they point out that Napoleon didn't fire on the pyramids; he wasn't at Marie Antoinette's execution and he did not, when general, participate in cavalry charges. But so what? Does it matter? How faithful does an historical biopic be to the facts? Clarke, who has interviewed the veteran British film director many times, including most recently to discuss Napoleon, gives his take. Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by John Casey. This week's BFG podcast is a feast for the brain. Michael Washburn engages host Neal Pollack in a discussion of Sandra Newman's provocative and "very raunchy" novel 'Julia', a brilliant and extended riff of the world of Oceania in George Orwell's '1984.' Neal somewhat wondered what Newman was getting at, but Michael found her extension of the world extremely compelling and disturbing, a fresh warning about the dangers of totalitarianism. BFG book club recommends it!'Napoleon' has finally arrived in theaters, and Stephen Garrett stops by to talk with Neal about the ultimate dad movie. They both really enjoyed the battles of Austerlitz and Waterloo and some of Joaquin Phoenix's campier lines. Stephen would like to see more of the charisma that made Bonaparte so beloved to the French people. Totally fair. But Neal will brook no criticism of Ridley Scott's Napoleon, the movie of the year if not even close to the best movie of the year.'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,' the Hunger Games prequel, took both Neal and contributor Sara Stewart by surprise. They both enjoyed the gritty early days of Panem vibe, both appreciated the good-quality country-style music, and found the performances persuasive. There's a reason it's a hit, though the love story is unconvincing and the act 3 coda goes on a bit too long. Still very much worth watching, just as the show is very much worth listening to.Enjoy!

James Cameron-Wilson assesses Ridley Scott's Napoleon, #1 with a take of £5.2m. Despite being 158m, he felt it cantered too rapidly through 32 years of Napoleon's life, as played by Joaquin Phoenix. However, the battle scenes are amazing, if gory, and he loved Martin Phipps's score. Shame about the longueurs. Disney's new U-certificate animation, Wish, is #3 with only £2.4m but such things are often slow starts and around for a long time. James also discussed true story Nyad, on Netflix, about a retired 60-year-old marathon swimmer who undertakes a crazy challenge. Sadly, despite Annette Bening, he found it uninspiring and unbelievable while the script was more DIRE-log than dialogue. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The panel begins by diving into Ridley Scott's Napoleon, a visually sumptuous biopic starring Joaquin Phoenix that attempts to chronicle the legendary historical figure's life and reduce him to human size, yet fails to do so within its 2 ½ hour runtime. Then, the three jump into Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, a new eight-part animated Netflix series that offers an alternate version of its protagonist, Scott Pilgrim (who was first depicted in Bryan Lee O'Malley's series of graphic novels then later in Edgar Wright's cult classic film, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), and reunites much of the movie's brilliant original cast. Finally, they discuss André 3000's New Blue Sun, a transcendent ambient album laced with flute-base soundscapes that on its face seems like a complete departure from the rapper's previous work in Outkast, but actually depicts a piece of him that's been present in his music all along.   In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel takes advantage of Jamelle's baking prowess and discusses best practices and tips in the kitchen, before turning to the eternal, all-important question: When you bake, do you use a measuring scale? On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Nov. 27 at 7:15 a.m. CT: TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel and Hamas appear open to extending a cease-fire in Gaza that has halted their deadliest and most destructive war but is set to expire after Monday. A fourth exchange of militant-held hostages for Palestinians imprisoned by Israel is planned for later in the day. Israel has said it would extend the cease-fire by one day for every 10 additional hostages released. Hamas has also said it hopes to extend the four-day truce. The cease-fire came into effect Friday after several weeks of indirect negotiations mediated by the United States, Qatar and Egypt. Police say a suspect has been arrested in the shooting of three young men of Palestinian descent who were attending a Thanksgiving holiday gathering near the University of Vermont campus. Police say the three were shot and injured Saturday night in Burlington. One of the men has suffered serious injuries and the others are in stable condition. Police Chief Jon Murad says a white man with a gun approached the trio, who were walking, and fired at least four rounds before fleeing. Murad says the shooting may have been a hate crime. Protests have been widespread and tensions have escalated in the U.S. as the death toll rises in the Israel-Hamas war. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon's largest school district says it has reached a tentative agreement with its teachers union and its roughly 45,000 students will be back in class on Monday after more than three weeks. The agreement must still be voted on by teachers who have been on the picket line since Nov. 1 over issues of pay, class sizes and planning time. It must also be approved by the school board. Portland Public Schools students missed 11 days of school before the district began its weeklong Thanksgiving break. As the strike dragged on, tensions rose and one school board member's rental property was vandalized. Consumers are scouring the internet for online deals as they begin to cap off the five-day post-Thanksgiving shopping bonanza with Cyber Monday. Even though e-commerce is now part and parcel of our everyday lives, Cyber Monday – a term coined back in 2005 by the National Retail Federation – continues to be the biggest online shopping day of the year. For several major retailers, the “Cyber Monday” sale is a days-long event that began over the weekend. Consumer spending for Cyber Week - the five major shopping days between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday - provides a strong indication on how much shoppers are willing to spend during the holiday season. NEW YORK (AP) — The Walt Disney Co.'s “Wish” had been expected to rule the Thanksgiving weekend box office, but moviegoers instead feasted on leftovers, as “The Hunger Games: Songbirds and Snakes” led ticket sales for the second weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. Neither of the weekend's top new releases — “Wish” and Ridley Scott's “Napoleon” — could keep up with Lionsgate's “Hunger Games” prequel. It led all films with $28.82 million over the weekend and $42 million over the five-day holiday frame. “Napoleon” outperformed expectations to take $32.5 million over the five-day weekend and an estimated $20.4 million Friday through Sunday. But “Wish” wobbled, coming in with $31.7 million over five days and $19.5 million Friday through Sunday. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden will convene the first meeting of his supply chain resilience council. The Democratic president is using Monday's event to announce 30 actions to improve access to medicine and needed economic data and other programs tied to the production and shipment of goods. Biden's announcement comes after supply chain problems fueled higher inflation as the United States recovered from the coronavirus pandemic in 2021. Consumer prices are down from last year's peaks. But polling shows that inflation remains a political challenge for Biden going into the 2024 presidential election. Jalen Hurts continues his MVP push as the NFL game of the day needs overtime to decide the Eagles and Bills, Patrick Mahomes is on his game Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers find their offense on the road, Trevor Lawrence puts up some hefty numbers and so does Jason Tatum in the NBA. NEW YORK (AP) — Rep. George Santos says he expected to be expelled from Congress following a scathing report by the House Ethics Committee that found substantial evidence of lawbreaking by the New York Republican. The comments on Friday came during a three-hour conversation on X Spaces in which Santos lashed out at colleagues and described the committee's report as “slanderous.” House investigators say Santos used campaign funds for personal purposes and caused the campaign to file false or incomplete reports. Since the release of the report earlier this month, several members of Congress who previously voted against expelling Santos have publicly reversed themselves. On Friday, Santos said he has done the math on the votes and “it doesn't look really good.” NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Daryl Hall has sued his longtime music partner John Oates, arguing that his plan to sell off his share of a joint venture would violate a business agreement the duo had. The move quickly prompted a judge last week to temporarily block the sale during legal proceedings and arbitration. The lawsuit contends that in their roles as co-trustees, Oates and other defendants were moving to sell their part in Whole Oats Enterprises LLP to Primary Wave Music. The lawsuit says they were doing so without Hall's consent and in violation of their business agreement while arbitration hadn't been completed. A court order Wednesday released more details from the case. NEW YORK (AP) — Merriam-Webster's word of the year for 2023 is “authentic.” Editor at large Peter Sokolowski told The Associated Press ahead of Monday's announcement that lookups for the word rose to new heights on the company's website throughout the year. There are many reasons. It's an age of deepfakes and post-truth. The rise of artificial intelligence also contributed. So did talk of authentic cuisine, authentic voices and authentic selves. Sokolowski called 2023 a crisis year of authenticity. This year's pick follows “gaslighting” in 2022. Authentic marks the 20th anniversary of Merriam-Webster choosing words of the year. Among the runners-up for 2023 were deepfake, implode and kibbutz. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. The Back To The Blockbuster teams is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Dallas Buyers Club, the film that details the real life story of Ron Woodroof, a cowboy diagnosed with AIDS in the mid-1980s, a time when both etiology and the treatment of HIV/AIDS are poorly understood and its sufferers subject to stigmatization. Written by Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack and directed by Jean-Marc Valle, the story continues with Woodroff smuggling unapproved pharmaceutical drugs into Texas to treat his symptoms. Here, he distributes them to fellow people with AIDS by establishing the “Dallas Buyers Club”, all the while facing opposition from the FDA. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, and Jennifer Garner. In addition to the 10 year anniversary of this acclaimed film, the team also breaks down trailers for Anyone But You, Madame Web, and Imaginary, while also discussing the news about a new Bourne being the works from director Edward Berger and Nicholas Hoult being cast as Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy. The duo also talks box office and gives their predictions for Ridley Scott's Napoleon.

Tom Sutcliffe talks to director Ridley Scott about his new film Napoleon - a subject that takes him back to an actor who's played an emperor for him before – Joaquin Phoenix was Commodus in Gladiator – and back to the period in which his very first film. The Duellists was set. A fifth of the seats at the Royal Albert Hall are owned by just over 300 people - who can choose to enjoy performances or sell the tickets on at a profit. We hear from Richard Lyttelton, a former President of the Royal Albert Hall who believes that making money out of the seats doesn't really align with the original vision of the venue. A Gloucester Old Spot pig has been named The Satsuma Complex - in honour of comedian Bob Mortimer's first book, which has won this year's Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse prize for the best comic novel. He's joined by fellow comedian and member of the judging panel Pippa Evans to explore what makes fiction funny.
