POPULARITY
In part 2 of our celebration of Folk Horror, Shawn, Travis, Joey, and Todd gather to discuss post-2000 Folk Horror movies and their resurgence in popularity.
The team have unearthed something terrible under the cabbages in the Welcome To Horror allotment, so it's time for “Blood On Satan's Claw”. A film in which Mr Kipling leads exceedingly angry mobs; The Master gets in trouble for playing with his snake in the woods; and Simon Williams receives the worst kind of handjob. Part of the Unholy Trinity of Folk Horror, “Blood on Satan's Claw” is the only one that features the genuinely supernatural. Originally conceived as a kind of anthology, those roots still show, but the decision to make it one tale was the correct one. Combining some of the most picturesque and beautiful imagery with some of the cruelest and horrific events to befall a seemingly innocent community; this is no mere Hammer knock-off. A marvellous script and a cast all bringing their best make for a disturbing glimpse of festering corruption, with our only hope being the intervention of harsh authoritarian powers seemingly as nasty and uncaring as the evil they confront. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.
Welcome back to Geekz 31 Days of Horror! Tonight, we travel to the eerie shores of Summerisle to uncover the haunting mystery of The Wicker Man (1973) — one of the most influential and chilling folk horror films ever made. When Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) arrives on a remote Scottish island to investigate the disappearance of a young girl, he finds a community deeply devoted to pagan rituals and ancient fertility traditions. But as his search leads him deeper into the island's beliefs — and to the charismatic Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) — the line between faith, fear, and fanaticism blurs… until the shocking and unforgettable ending that redefined horror cinema.

"They are bad people. They should suffer." For Episode 380, Thomas and Brandon continue their discussion of Folk Horror movies by talking about Ben Wheatley and his movie KILL LIST.
In this episode, Tim and Johnathan dive into the grim, atmospheric world of Pumpkinhead (1988) and welcome special guest Aaron from A&B Horror to break down why this revenge-driven creature feature perfectly fits our Folk Horror theme. From rural curses to supernatural justice, we explore the movie's eerie mood, practical effects, and lasting impact on horror fans.
It's Night 2 of our 13 Nights of Halloween: Folk Horror Edition, and tonight we're burning bright with the one that started it all—The Wicker Man (1973).
What makes folk horror so unsettling? This episode maps the weird woods: isolated settings, old customs that refuse to die, and the outsider who realizes too late they can't leave. Shereen arrives a skeptic; Meaghan leads the tour—through forests, farmlands, and edge-of-the-map towns where tradition presses against modern life.We unpack how setting becomes a character, why slow dread beats jump scares, and how folk horror pits the past against the present. We also explore how the subgenre is evolving—think eco-anxieties and even tech-resistant towns—and share a stack of must-reads and must-watches that capture the vibe: Brom's Slewfoot, Stephen Graham Jones's The Only Good Indians, A.M. Shine's The Watchers, plus The Wicker Man and The Village. If you've ever walked into a place that felt “off” for reasons you couldn't name, this one's for you. Dark academia reads gorgeously on the page—but stumbles on screen. In this episode, we unpack the big reasons: the aesthetic-over-story trap, elite settings that limit relatability and diversity, and the reality that streamers cancel fast and world-build slow. We use “Wednesday,” “The Order,” and our beloved Poe-soaked, gothic campus imagery to ask: is the genre “unfilmable”… or just misunderstood? We also float a fix—adult animation—plus how fandom pressure and multi-book epics make accuracy impossible without killing character depth. We cover:Why the vibe can eclipse plot (and how that nukes character empathy).Elitism, scholarship kids, and why viewers bounce off “pretentious” casts.Streamer economics: fast cancellations vs. slow-burn worldbuilding.“Wednesday” S2 hype (and that cameo) vs. book-to-screen pipelines. The bold idea: make dark-academia animation for adult audiences. It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a three parter anyways. 1970 was, I would say a less than average year for horror movies. But those top slots are so strong it's unreal. But, what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 1970? Well, here we have the top 5. The worst 10. A slew of also rans, a few J&B whiskey's and a 4 hour running time. This is 1970, A Year In Horror. It's a pretty long journey this one, part 1 of 3 in fact. We love Mel Brooks. He is responsible for some of the funniest movies of all time. Young Frankenstein is also one of the best adaptations the Mary Shelley classic ever made. So, we were both excited to hear about the sequel to Spaceballs. We rank our favorite movies from Brooks and why Spaceballs once disappointed us.We are also huge fans of Fright Night. While there was a great remake in the early 2010s, you just do not hear enough about it. Despite having one of horror's most iconic lines, it does not get that much love. This week, we have two bits of news; one is concrete; one is its rumored connection to one of the most infamous murders of all time. This year for Pride Month we are discussing The Last Thing Mary Saw. It is a great bit of folk horror that is frightening, atmospheric, and filled with great characters. The mystery is engaging and the performances are top notch. It also treats its queer subject matter with a sensitivity that is not seen enough. The first six months just whooshed by and we have a lot to discuss. We cover a wide range of topics. Why do we sometimes consider no longer reviewing documentaries? The good and bad of AI in film. More folk horror, a slasher, and a reverse exorcism all enter our conversation about 2025's first six months. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. We have made no secret that we do not take the Oscars seriously. Like everybody else, we enjoy making predictions and second guessing the winners, but we also know they are a joke. We had no idea just how far that joke went. This week, the Academy made a shocking change that was impossible for us to ignore. We also talk about the recent cast announcements for the Ready or Not sequel. For as long as people have shared scary stories, trauma has been a part of them. There is nothing more terrifying than real life horrors, after all. The Killgrin is an addition to mental health horror that follows a woman who is trying to cope with a horrible tragedy. After visiting a spiritual healer, she learns she is being followed by an entity that feeds on misery. It is not the most original premise, but it is one that can work if done correctly. And The Killgrin does do a lot right. There are some gnarly kills, cool creature design, and some decent characters. But a confusing ending and strange decisions negatively impact the film. But is it really fair to call it Temu Smile?Folk horror has followed an interesting trajectory. What began as stories about people dealing with strange rituals and mysterious happenings has somehow become more about atmosphere and less about characters. Frewaka is something of a throwback. It may be vague and creepy, but it always goes back to its protagonists. There is a lot to unpack in what is a very straightforward story. Frewaka is an atmospheric film filled with powerful imagery that interweaves slice of life moments. The setting and look of the film are perfect and the fact that most of it is spoken in Irish further immerses the audience. Blake also talks about the most important quality to make a good folk horror movie. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. How much did we love Barbarian? Go back and listen to the episode and check it out. You can probably guess that we are very interested in the new movie from its writer-director. And if we already weren't, the creepy website would easily suck us in. The Hell House LLC franchise is an underrated series that are excellent examples of found footage horror. The news that the final installment comes out later this year is certainly excit- wait. It's not going to be found footage?Anyone who has ever spent any amount of time on YouTube has eventually stumbled across a video about the greatest game show scandals of all time. And the Press Your Luck incident is one of the most infamous. After memorizing the board, the former ice cream truck driver went on a record breaking run.The Luckiest Man in America chronicles the episode and everything surrounding it. It is a character driven story that is more about the people involved than the actual scandal itself. The film uses great performances, aesthetics, and an overall tone to tell its story. If only it had more Whammys and less Johnny Knoxville.Call of the Void sets itself up to be a crazy ride from its awesome opening. It is an atmosphere that lasts the entire runtime. It is a shame the filmmakers decided to go all in with being creepy and totally decided to ignore the writing. It is a great example of what happens when being vague and weird is more important than actually telling a story. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. We are fortunate to have Producer, Winnie Cheung and actress, Celia Au on the show to discuss their short film, Last Call which premiered at the 2025 SXSW Midnight Short Program. This short fantasy thriller takes you on the psychological journey of a traumatized motorcyclist who daydreams about a sultry serpent woman and is haunted by her enchanting voice. Winnie's credits include being a co-producer on the SXSW Audience Award Winner “Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror” in 2021, and has won several awards at Sundance and more. Inspired by David Cronenberg's body horror, American erotic thrillers, and Eastern fantasy films - LAST CALL reflects Winnie's diasporic identity - a dreamlike blend of the ancestral East, and the rebellious West. Celia Au who previously starred in Wu Assassins and Lodge 49, brings Winnie's vision to life in this story's discovery of profound revelation. We talk about: Integrating and displaying complex emotions in film Ways to deal with internal conflicts How Breath work, mental visualization, and Active Listening are key to facilitating a productive and safe work environment Storytelling as a powerful way to positively change the world. In this episode the FM3 dive head first into the folk horror madness that is "The Wicker Man"! But what better way to do that than by watching "The Wicker Man" (1973) back to back with "The Wicker Man" (2006)!! Sure we got slightly forced by a top dawg Patron into watching both of these, sorta like being pushed into a burning wicker dude effigy, but Jef, Josh and Brian wouldn't have it any other way. So sit back, wait for the smoke to fill your lungs and the smell of a burning goat hit your sniffer as you quickly realize that maybe you won't be escaping without also having to watch both of these freaky folk horror movies. We are featuring a feed drop from a brilliant show on the RQ Network: Hi Nay. “Hi Nay” is an atmospheric, analog-style horror audio drama, featuring Folk Horror, mythology and chilling supernatural terrors in an urban setting. Hi Nay, literally translated to “Hi Mom”, follows Mari, a Filipina immigrant who lives in Toronto. Mari first gets roped into Toronto's supernatural crises after saving their neighbor Laura from being killed. From then on, she assists Detectives Donner and Murphy in dealing with supernatural threats using her upbringing as a babaylan (Shaman). Mari finds herself dealing with a multitude of supernatural issues in Toronto, tied to cursed artifacts and the sinister order behind their creation. She has a great aptitude for magic, though her abilities seem to have a price she's not forthcoming about. She calls her Nanay (mother) often and recounts her experiences over the phone. This exciting audio drama is filled with Mystery, Suspense, and most importantly, Horror. Introduction and outro by Billie Hindle.
