EPISODE SUMMARY: David Junk is a music executive who lived in Russia for 15 years working to fight piracy and grow the legitimate music industry there. He is joined by author Fred Bronson who cowrote Rockin' the Kremlin with David. On this episode of Chachi Loves Everybody, Chachi talks to David Junk and Fred Bronson about:Growing up in Ohio during the Cold War and listening to rock radio to distract from fears of nuclear war.Traveling to Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall to see Pink Floyd and being inspired by the onset of capitalism to move to Russia.Moving to Moscow and gaining the trust of his Russian coworkers while working at a diamond company.Facing investigation by Russian prosecutors for years for a crime he didn't commit.Getting his start in the Russian music industry where he witnessed rampant piracy and a lack of copyright protection. Going from accountant to CEO of Universal Music in Russia.Discovering and signing Russian acts like t.A.T.u and Alsou and helping them gain global recognition.Helping Alsou place second at Eurovision and tour Russia and America.Introducing Eminem to Russia and his influence on the hip-hop scene there. The current political situation in Russia, including the invasion of Crimea and the war in UkraineAnd More!ABOUT THIS EPISODE'S GUEST: After the fall of the Soviet Union, David Junk was one of the first idealistic young Americans to move to Russia to live, work and build a cultural bridge between former superpower enemies. He eventually became the first CEO of Universal Music, based in Moscow. For a decade, he promoted international artists in Russia, including such huge names as Elton John, U2, Sting, and Bon Jovi. He introduced hip-hop music to Russian youth. David also discovered and signed multiple Russian artists to Universal, including t.A.T.u, who would become the biggest-selling Russian act in music industry history. David also did some things that no other music executive in the United States has ever done. Music piracy in Russia was rampant, and the market for cheap, counterfeit compact discs was so pervasive that it threatened the legitimate Russian music industry's ability to gain a foothold. So on behalf of Universal's stable of artists and the Russian music industry, he participated in law enforcement raids of pirate factories and testified in court against the criminal gangs who operated them. David has been extensively interviewed about this subject on television, radio, and print and wrote an editorial about it that appeared in the Wall Street Journal. He also wrote about it for the American Chamber of Commerce and submitted written testimony to the US Congress on the topic of piracy and intellectual property rights in Russia.David is an authority on this topic because of his deep understanding of Russia. He lived and worked there for fifteen years, and raised a family in Moscow. In addition to starting the record label in Moscow, David opened the first showroom in Russia for the iconic American brand Gibson Guitars. David has extensive knowledge of Russian-Ukrainian relations, having opened the first Universal Music office in Kyiv and having developed music reality shows for Ukrainian TV.ABOUT THE PODCAST: Chachi Loves Everybody is brought to you by Benztown and hosted by the President of Benztown, Dave “Chachi” Denes. The fall of the Soviet wall and the opening of the iron curtain presented ample space for hope, optimism and opportunity for westerners eager to share culture, creativity, business and democracy concepts with the citizens of the former Soviet Union. David Junk leapt at the chance to work for Polygram/Universal Records in a country hungry for music and freedom. David's 15 years in Russia were a unique window of time between Gorbachov's Glasnost and Putin's re-consolidation of power. David stepped into a landscape that he called “the wild, wild, east,” teaming with gangsters and corruption and also talented, enterprising Russians, eager to explore new possibilities. David's journey is documented in his book, Rockin' The Kremlin which gives readers an inside look at boots-on-the-ground life and work in Russia from the perspective of a Russian speaking, idealistic American. David and his co-writer Fred Bronson join us for a fascinating dive into David's adventures… Contract negations with Polygram which included kidnapping insurance, Russian kids' obsession with hip hop, discovering and exporting Russian talent including two young girls called t.A.T.u. who kissed on The Tonight Show, wearing “F*** War” tee-shirts which they got past everyone because the words were written in Russian. David says that those tee-shirts are now being worn by kids in Ukraine. This window in time introduced a generation to a complex intersection of culture and politics which was ultimately snuffed by Putin's coalition with the Russian Orthodox Church and a renewed, vehement opposition to LGBTQ rights and individual expression. Ultimately, it was David's deep disappointment in colleagues' support for the invasion of Ukraine and concerns for his family's safety which brought him back to the states. But still, so much was learned and exchanged. All this, plus Fritz and Weezy are recommending The English Teacher on FX (streaming on Hulu) and the making of The Sopranos doc, Wiseguy on HBO Max.Path Points of Interest:Rocking The Kremlin: My Incredible, True Story Of Gangsters, Oligarchs, And Pop Stars In Putin's Russia by David Junk with Fred BronsonDavid Junk on FacebookDavid Junk on InstagramFred Bronson on TwitterArt During Wartime PodcastGift of Democracy The English Teacher FX and Huluhttps://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/english-teacherWiseguy - HBOhttps://www.hbo.com/movies/wise-guy-david-chase-and-the-sopranos

For our deep dive of the final episode of "Star Trek: The Animated Series," we're excited and honored to be joined by a very special guest: "John Culver," a.k.a. Fred Bronson, who not only wrote "The Counter-Clock Incident," but was also the studio publicist for "The Animated Series." While pursuing an alien ship traveling at high warp speed, the Enterprise passes through the remnants of the Beta Niobe supernova, only to emerge in an alternate universe where everything works in reverse -- and the crew begins to age backwards. In order to return to their own universe, they must figure out a way to replicate the conditions that got them here, but they must do so before they become too young to be able to operate their own ship. Their only hope lies with their very special passenger: 75-year-old Commodore Robert April, the first captain of the Enterprise who was en route to the planet Babel for a retirement ceremony, but must now once again assume command as the only senior officer capable of saving the ship. Even though "How Sharper than a Serpent's Tooth" was the episode that won "Star Trek" its Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Program, you couldn't have asked for a better episode to close out "The Animated Series" than "The Counter-Clock Incident." In addition to being filled with suspense, excitement, humor and a lot of heart, it brings "Star Trek" full circle from its earliest origins, when Gene Roddenberry wrote his first treatment of "Star Trek" back in March of 1964. With the conclusion of "The Counter-Clock Incident," the first phase of "Star Trek" was now truly over -- but as we all know, the human adventure was just beginning. On this episode of Big Conversations, Little Bar the guest is Fred Bronson, who was shamelessly used by co-hosts Patrick Evans and Randy Florence. He may know more about American music charts than anyone else... ever! He's been writing about them for Billboard Magazine for almost 40 years. Fred is also known for the multiple books he has authored about popular music, or his multiple appearances on American Idol (which he wrote for) or his time working with Dick Clark on the American Music Awards and Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years Eve.As you'll hear, Randy wanted to talk about the lunch date Fred had as a youngster with Connie Stevens. Patrick gets kinda giddy as Fred talks about the Star Trek episodes he wrote, and the time Captain Kirk told a young Fred Bronson to get the hell out of the makeup room! And, they also get their guest to tell the story of being a model and stand in for Jack Webb (of Dragnet fame) as a small child. Recorded from the corner booth at the center of the Coachella Valley universe, Little Bar, it's another entertaining and hilarious podcast!

Have you listened to a popular music countdown show? Many are a weekly show that play the top 40 or so songs in reverse order. The introduction of the song usually tells you how long it has been at the current position and whether it has moved up or down in the rankings. Sometimes, the shows will change the format for the top rankings in the past year. Of course, in today's internet culture, live radio shows are less popular. Now people just publish a web page or a play list. Recently Billboard.com published a list of the top love songs of all time. The number one song, according to them, is Endless Love by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie.* It uses phrases like "two hearts beating as one" and "you mean the world to me." Of course, it is set to some great music and performed by exceptional vocalists. But the song focuses on the emotions of two people in love. I don't think it is the greatest description of love. For that, I'd recommend 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. This passage is a favorite at weddings! So why are we talking about love when our focus this week is on patience? Because the first description of love in 1 Corinthians 13 is this: "Love is patient." That makes sense! Scripture tells us that God is love and that God is patient, not wanting any to perish. May God give you patience today! *Fred Bronson, "Top 50 Love Songs of All Time," Billboard.com, February 4, 2021, https://www.billboard.com/articles/list/6792625/top-50-love-songs-of-all-time Please provide feedback and suggestions at: https://www.sparkingfaith.com/feedback/ Bumper music “Landing Place” performed by Mark July, used under license from Shutterstock.

During the summer of 1976, people thought that the title fo the song was about "making mid-day whoopie" (thanks Newlywed Game), when they heard the song, Afternoon Delight.  This catchy little earworm reached number one during the week that America was celebrating a 200 year anniversay.  According to Billboard Chart HIstorian, Fred Bronson, the song was actually named after a great meal at a restaurant.  That is certainly different than the. first top-ten hit ever recorded by a porn star, "More More More", by Andre True.   How do you like it.... Bruce Jenner was an Olymian and Nadia was the first 10 in Gymnastics.  Atari was a "Breakout" hit and it's creators, Wozniak and Jobs were still unknown to the world.  John Lennon was allowed to stay in the U.S.  The last slide rule was made and mercy sakes alive, we were about to start a CB convoy!
