I started writing an annoyed little rant about how every digital service/app seems to cost $10/month or $100/year nowadays - which often seems overpriced. It's turned into this +3000-word deep-dive piece critiquing the online "Idiocracy economy" and the roles we all play in it. It delves into the folly of the freemium model, academic research on human nature that entrepreneurs are ignoring, what subscription services are really costing you, and more.Read on HackerNoon
Makenzie Mayes is a force to be reckoned with, and she showed us why last month. Makenzie and her incredible horse Rousey were absolutely BLAZING. The team set an arena record with a 12.94 in Cowtown Coliseum, they clinched the barrel racing win for the Free Riders at Kid Rock's Rock N Rodeo and competed in AT&T Stadium in the final round of the Women's Rodeo Championship event during the PBR Finals for their shot at $60,000!Makenzie comes from a rodeo family and her never lose attitude has taken her far in the arena as an all-around cowgirl. Jordan Jo sits down with Makenzie to talk about what a thrilling experience the month of May was, the inside scoop on her trailer full of equine athletes and of course a little bit about the breakaway roping. Makenzie is going to be a standout for years to come, you'll want to be In The LOOP for this episode!in the LOOP Podcast hosted by Jordan Jo Hollabaugh, is inspired by the western culture and breakaway roping lifestyle. Your intrepid hosts start this week's rollicking rollercoaster by recounting the annual rending of clothes and gnashing of teeth that arises from AEMO's Gas Statement of Opportunities, affectionately(?) known as the GSOO! How worried should we be about the market operator's forecast on next year's demand and longer term outlook on the supply of fossil gas? You may be shocked that there were differing perspectives out there in energy land (including some very sensible suggestions from friend of the pod Tristan Edis)! A shout out to Thomas Longden, one of the authors of last pod's paper on hydrogen production emissions and costs, who reached out to us - Hi! - and pointed us in the direction of a handy explainer they'd written up on the paper in The Conversation. Well worth a read, however this plug should not be taken as encouragement for Summeruperers to defect from the pod and seek other handy explainers!Speaking of defectors, you wouldn't be doing too great in the world of Bill's Angels if the Norhausian thesis on climate clubs had made its way to the climate zeitgeist. We are indeed speaking of the eminent, illustrious, notorious economist and father of integrated assessment models (yep those pesky IAMs), William Nordhaus, whose 2015 paper Climate Clubs: Overcoming Free-riding in International Climate Policy your intrepid hosts tackle this week. Luke and Frankie sleep-walked into Tennant's trap on this one, as well as another, far more sensible, paper on climate clubs, Climate clubs: politically feasible and desirable? written by Robert Falkner, Naghmeh Nasiritousix and Gunilla Reischl. And because we really are that tragic we also unpack the G7's recent announcement of a climate club, its terms of reference and our best feelpinions on how that might go!Frankie's One More Thing is a neat bit of analysis from the IEA on the record fall in fossil gas demand in Europe in 2022. Weather, renewables growth, electrification and behaviour change all get a guernsey! Luke's One More Thing is the EU parliament's recent passing of an amendment to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive to up the ante on renovation rates and performance of the EU's poorer performing building stock. Woot! Off to trilogues it goes, however not without some controversy in the form of a carve out for ‘renewable gas-ready' boilers.Tennant's One More Thing is the Productivity Commission's 5-year Productivity Inquiry report, Advancing Prosperity. Or more specifically, volume 6 of this 1,000 page monster, Managing the climate transition. Expand the Safeguard? Rubbish other policies? Tennant has thoughts! And that's all from us this week Summerupperers! We shall see you next time and until then, please keep tweeting your thoughts to us at @LukeMenzel, @TennantReed and @FrankieMuskovic and if you would like to weave some golden threads through our back catalogue, give us your feelpinions or suggest papers to read we are always here for that - hit us up at mailbag@letmesumup.net.

Are creators (and anyone who doesn't contribute to WordPress) free riders? I look at that question and wonder why there's such hostility towards non-contributors, even though they are essential in the march towards that mother of all vanity metrics: 50% market share. Plus, A bit of news about an upcoming series on this show, and a deep cut from an old podcast I used to host about why you need to build your mailing list. Brought to you by GoDaddy Pro. The talk around the WordPress open source and the free rider problem has been discussed by the community since May with strong opinions on both sides of the contributing fence. Josepha Haden Chomphosy wrote an article over on make.wordpress.org about the issue with Open Source (the Tragedy of the Commons) and the Free Riders. Could it be that we are concentrating on multiple things to discuss one single problem? Josepha makes the point that the discussion should be focused on making the software as best as it can be for everyone using it. WebP, an image format developed by Google, which is intended to replace JPEG, PNG, and GIF file formats, will soon be generated by default for new JPEG images uploaded in WordPress. WebP conversion is coming to WordPress 6.1 and it doesn't look like there will be a UI-based option to turn this off. Sarah Gooding over at the WPTavern writes about the opt-in option in depth and it seems like a ticket for this will remain open to see if this option remains as the default. The CDC changing the mask guidelines might have been the most important event last week, but we found an Army recruitment video, "Emma The Calling," that makes the CIA video look like a masterpiece. As a result, we knock down the virtue signal and highlight the shortsightedness of the Army's objective. Next, we discuss the Israel and Palestine conflict and the stupidity of world peace (27:20). Rob and Drew share their love for Julius Caesar (56:54). Epic sued Apple and hilarity ensues (1:12:46). Next, the gang emphasizes the importance of protecting polite speech (1:25:33). Finally, we talk about what really matters. Fauci and the CDC have granted vaccinated freedom, but they might have overlooked the free-rider problem (1:41:45).

Brendan continues his discussion of the idea of free riders and how they appear in games. He ponders the fact that games allow for a different moral or ethical code to come into play, and wonders if that alternate code makes free-riding something very difficult to include in a design.
