The feelings are usually undeniable, but our explanations for why we feel the way we feel can be wildly inaccurate, and because of that, our resulting behavior can be, let's say, sub-optimal. Yes, I'm talking about the TV series. With my family life I don't get to see a lot of TV, but I really like a good story that moves me. And I like Kevin Costner as an actor. So I watched the original Yellowstone series. It was hard at first, I didn't like any characters. But then it drew me in. So now I've watched the prequels, 1883 and 1923, and really appreciate them. 1883 has some beautiful character stories in my opinion. The last episode of this podcast was with Dr. Tessa West, who is a Professor of Psychology at New York University and her new book is, Job Therapy: Finding Work That Works For You. We talked about the feelings around work and how it's in many ways a more devoted marriage than with our spouse. If we look at work as having evolved from mere hunting and gathering to also what we get to contribute to the world, we create that reality. Well, most of us will work for nearly 50 years. I had my first consistent job at about 13, started my first business at 15, and my intent is to live till I'm 90 and work till then. That would put me at 75 years of working. You will also spend more time with your work than your spouse if you don't include sleeping. So in essence, the greatest marriage of your life will be your work. What kind of relationship will you have with this primary spouse? My guest is Dr. Tessa West, who is a Professor of Psychology at New York University where she is a leading expert on the science of social relationships. She has over 100 academic publications and is a regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal. It is common for organizations to say they want to remove all bias from their workplace or to become a completely unbiased organization. Unfortunately, that isn't possible because our brains run on bias in order to make decisions. Instead of trying to eliminate bias, it is best to understand and work with it. When we know what tendencies the brain will try to use and when/where they come into play, there is an opportunity to reframe and turn those biases into an engine for moving forward. This episode from Melina Palmer is an introduction to the many biases we have toward others who are not like us, including groups, to start you thinking about and understanding which biases exist and figuring out how to start navigating them in your life and organization. In this episode: Hear a little bit about a lot of biases we humans have toward others. This includes both how we look at groups and how we perform inside them.  Understand how those biases impact you and those in your life and work.  Get some tips for starting to think about how to navigate these biases (since they can't be eliminated). Biases and assumptions don't reflect the function of the robot. It can be dispiriting that six years after the #MeToo movement went viral, alleged office sexual predators continue to be unmasked by the media – including the recent FT exposés of hedge fund manager Crispin Odey, and of star architect David Adjaye, both of whom dispute the allegations against them. We've all had to deal with problematic bosses or coworkers at some point in our career journeys. But the issue is how can you deal with them in a productive way, so everyone still feels comfortable in the workplace and gets their work done.Tessa West is a Professor of Psychology at New York University and a leading expert in the science of interpersonal communication. Her research focuses on questions such as: How can we improve communication across cultural and national divides, and what hurdles do we need to overcome to make hybrid communication work? She is also the author of “Jerks at Work” which focuses on coping with toxic colleagues.Tessa joins Greg to talk about how toxicity can affect productivity in an office environment, maybe having some empathy for the jerks, credit stealing, and finding allies within the workplace.Episode Quotes:Three rules to consider before quitting your jobI have a couple rules. One is, the person who's creating these problems, you know, or the person who's in charge of the person creating these problems, are they motivated to change? Are they motivated to fix it? So, if the motivation isn't there, you're not going to get anywhere. And then the second piece of that is, assuming they're not motivated, how much flexibility do you have at all to shift over to a new team? To a new manager? If you're stuck in this kind of power dynamic, they are not motivated to change and these behaviors are deal-breakers, it's just like any relationship—you don't really have much of a choice but to exit. But I would definitely try, you know, having some of those conflict conversations. Don't kind of jump out right away because you think the grass is greener. You know, we're seeing with the great resignation, a lot of people are surprisingly wishing they had their old job back because we have very little evidence that the new place we're going to is any better. So, I'd add the kind of last piece of advice is, when you're thinking about leaving and you know where you're going to go next, you have to put them through the same kind of gauntlet that you put your old job through to make sure that those same problems, or even worse problems you've never even heard of, don't exist. And we don't interrogate new jobs in the same way that we interrogate our existing jobs. We sort of always assume it's going to be better. But you have to really interrogate them before you make that step, because if you're not careful, you're just going to have a career of a whole bunch of horizontal moves. And it's going to be very hard to climb up.What “toxic” really meansWe use the word "toxic" a lot. We throw it around. And everyone says it, but no one knows what it means. And I think it's very much in the eye of the beholder. One person's toxic coworker, or toxic boss, is another person's someone with leadership potential who knows how to get ahead here.How smart jerks can turn your good traits into badSo, one thing that bosses do is they try to show as much trust in teams as possible. So, there's this whole movement out there to not micromanage, to trust people. We use this kind of vague language that implies that, if we're overseeing them too much, if we're communicating with them too much, they're going to burn out, they're going to get irritated, they want autonomy, you know, all that kind of good stuff. In the book, she deep dives the seven jerks you're most likely to encounter in the workplace, drawing on decades of original research to expose their inner workings and weak points — and ultimately deliver an effective game plan for stopping each type before they take you down with them. I've experienced plenty of these in my life, so I'm well versed in this topic. I'm joined today by Tessa West. She just published her first book called 'Jerks At Work: Toxic Coworkers and What To Do About Them'. Tessa identifies the seven jerks you're most likely to encounter and gives us some great advice for how to deal with them and stop them before they cause too much damage. I loved this conversation with Tessa. We discuss these jerks while using many examples from my current employment situation. We also chat about working from home, the real reason people are leaving their jobs and my daughter's love for Cocomelon.
