Documents uncovered through a Freedom of Information request have revealed that the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) declined to give the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water (DCEEW) information about the cost of the carbon budgets imposed on the Integrated System Plan (ISP). AEMO acknowledged the calculations had been done as part of the modelling undertaken for the ISP, but concluded AEMO “is not at liberty to share this information”. So what does 2024 ESOO have to say for itself? Everything is now terrific, reliability wise! OR IS IT??!! This year's ESOO leads with the good news picture but *warning* we still need to read carefully and while some big projects have been approved (oh hi HumeLink!), we should be feeling the urgency of Getting Stuff Done. He is a writer, a comedian, a broadcaster, a wager of Wars on Waste and a general in the Fight for Planet A, Craig Reucassel! And the reinforcements are warranted as we launch into an extended opening segment focused on AEMO's 2024 Integrated System Plan. This discussion ranged across delights such as the big Consumer Energy Resources rebrand (and what's changed other than the name), why gas peaking capacity is like insurance (Tennant tells all) and the zero carbon tech we can turn to to deal with dunkelflaute in the long term (probably not batteries, and definitely not nuclear)! Our main paperWe also reached a tipping point on the concept of tipping points dear Summerupperers and took one for the collective team by diving into the latest offering from the University of Exeter's Global Systems Institute, the 2023 Global Tipping Points report. We had a look at the summary report (lots of things to worry about in there) and then did a deep dive on section four, Positive tipping points in technology, economy and society. TL;DR: ‘tipping points' may be a tad overused as a concept here but perhaps there are one or two areas in which we can leverage learning rates and catalyse some social contagion to replicate the success experienced by solar and wind. One more thingsTennant's One More Thing is an anecdote regarding a query he put to Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen at a recent forum at Parliament House. Politicians are known to duck questions from time to time, but at least the Minister's podcast themed parry gets points for novelty.Craig's One More Thing is his keen interest in ensuring costings for prospective nuclear plants factor in the expense of the continued use of aging, emissions intensive coal fired power stations while we wait for nuclear to come online. BPH Energy (ASX: BPH) managing director David Breeze joins Small Caps to discuss the continuing delays impacting the proposed testing of the PEP 11 oil and gas exploration licence off the coast of New South Wales. At a time when the Federal government and east coast gas users are crying out for more supplies, BPH and its investee company Advent Energy keep on running into roadblocks in their plans to drill a well on a large gas target in PEP 11. The recent NSW government move to bring in a Bill to potentially ban oil and gas activities in the waters off its coastline is the latest frustration for those looking to find gas reserves that can help overcome energy issues that have been forecast to potentially lead to major blackouts in New South Wales and Victoria. A recent report by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) found Victorian gas production capacity has decreased, which means there will be an increasing amount of winter gas supply required from Queensland. AEMO's recent Victorian Gas Planning Report update indicated this will continue, with the planned closure of Longford's gas plant 1 starting in July 2024 and Gas Plant 3 later in the decade. To try and overcome the NSW and Victorian government's anti-gas stance, the Federal government has continually had to rely on Queensland's LNG producers to carry the load. A commercial discovery in PEP 11 could potentially be a game-changer for the east coast. We're meant to be transitioning to a greener future and getting rid of gas for good. But now we're talking about drilling for more of it, or importing supplies, because soon we might not have enough to keep the lights and heaters on. The Australian Energy Market Operator has published its annual Gas Statement of Opportunities report. The report forecasts difficult times ahead for Australia's east coast gas market, with a risk of shortfalls on peak demand days in 2025 and seasonal supply gaps from 2026. So, is Australia running out of gas? At the household level, people are concerned about keeping the heater going and the cooktop on. In the bigger picture, governments and industry are grappling with a complex change from fossil fuels to renewable energy. In this new Grattan Podcast, host Kat Clay talks to our energy expert Alison Reeve about whether Australia can expect gas shortfalls in the future, and where the responsibility lies for avoiding – or at least managing – these potential outages. This week, host Dr. I. David Daniels will speak with Brandi Hunter founder of Aspiring Emergency Managers Online. Breaking into a new profession is often challenging for those lacking resources and support networks. This is especially true in a profession like emergency management where the networks are limited in terms of access. However, how does one help aspiring professionals in this industry while simultaneously overcoming significant physical challenges of your own? Ms. Hunter will share her experience as an emergency manager, mom, cancer survivor, and, most recently, an amputee. She'll discuss how, despite her own challenges, she remains focused on not only inspiring new and upcoming emergency managers while continuing to expand how the profession meets the needs of all of the communities that they serve.
