BURTON CUMMINGS THE LEGENDARY VOICE OF THE GUESS WHO 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' EPISODE 10 Burton Cummings is the legendary voice, songwriter, and keyboardist for Canada's own classic rock superstars The Guess Who. Although the group has had numerous personnel changes throughout the years, the most prominent members have been Burton Cummings and guitarist Randy Bachman.  Cummings was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His first band was an R&B group called The Deverons. The band released two singles on the REO Records label.  In 1965, Cummings joined The Guess Who replacing Bob Ashley on keyboards and eventually Chad Allan on vocals. The Guess Who scored commercially with their first international hit “These Eyes” (#6 Billboard Hit) in 1969. The track was featured on their album Wheatfield Soul on the RCA record label. The single was written by Bachman/Cummings and was their first to reach the top ten.  The Guess Who followed with a succession of Top 40 hits including … “Laughing” (#10 U.S. Hit, #1Canada -written by Bachman/Cummings) and “Undun” (#22 U.S. Hit). 1970 would prove to be the most pivotal year for The Guess Who. The group scored (2) #1 Hits in the U.S. with “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" and “American Woman” the group's biggest selling single. The Guess Who also spawned the hits …. “No Time” (#5 U.S. #1 Canada -written by Bachman/Cummings), “Hand Me Down World” (#17 U.S. Hit) and “Share The Land” (#10 U.S. Hit -written by Burton Cummings).  Randy Bachman left The Guess Who in 1970 and would eventually form Bachman- Turner Overdrive. Subsequent albums released by The Guess Who … Canned Wheat (1969), American Woman (1970), Share The Land (1970), So Long, Bennatyne (1971), Rockin' (1972), Artificial Paradise (1973). In 1973, Burton Cummings and The Guess Who released one of the group's most underrated albums entitled The Guess Who #10. The album was a clear diversion from the band's roots but spotlighted brilliant lyrical content and virtuoso musicianship. The album featured Burton Cummings composition “Glamour Boy.” The track was a jab at David Bowie's glitter rock insurgence. The album also featured the profound “Cardboard Empire” written by Bill Wallace and Kurt Winter, while hauntingly performed by Cummings.  In 1974, The Guess Who collaborated on their final Top 40 single entitled “Clap For The Wolfman,” (#6 U.S. Billboard Hit) an applicable tribute to legendary radio and TV personality Wolfman Jack.  Subsequent releases: The Guess Who #10 (1973), Road Food (1974), Flavours (1974), Power in the Music (1975), The Way They Were (1976). The Guess Who disbanded in 1975. In 1983, Bachman, Cummings, Jim Kale and Garry Peterson reunited as The Guess Who to play a series of Canadian gigs and recorded the Together Again live album and video.  Bachman and Cummings reunited again in 1997 to perform in Winnipeg for a disaster relief fund raiser.  An eclectic Guess Who reunion ensued in 2000 featuring Bachman, Cummings, McDougall, Kale, and Peterson. Bill Wallace eventually replaced Kale while the group toured regularly through 2003. A live album and DVD followed at the end of the 2000 tour. The Guess Who was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2001. Cummings received an additional Star in 2011. The Guess Who performed for an estimated 450,000 people at Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto, a benefit concert in 2003.  The Guess Who continues to tour with only original members … drummer Garry Peterson and bassist Jim Kale. Burton Cummings also amassed a widely successful solo career. He landed a huge hit with “Stand Tall” (#10 U.S. #1 Hit Canada) in 1976.  Burton Cummings solo albums …Burton Cummings (1976), My Own Way to Rock (1977), Dream of a Child (1978), Woman Love (1980), The Best of Burton Cummings (1980), Sweet Sweet (1981), Heart (1984), Plus Signs (1990), The Burton Cummings Collection (1994), Up Close and Alone (1996), Above the Ground (2008).   In 2002, The Burton Cummings Theatre for the Performing Arts in Winnipeg, Manitoba was renamed to dedicate the singer and songwriter.  In 2008, Cummings released the highly- acclaimed CD Above The Ground. All the tracks on the release are written by Cummings. The album also features his touring band The Carpet Frogs. In 2009, Cummings received the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honors.  In 2012, Burton Cummings Massey Hall was released –an incredible live CD recorded in Toronto.  Most recently … Burton Cummings is on a summer tour. He'll be releasing a book of poetry soon entitled, ‘The Writings of B. L. Cummings,' and a video series called RUFF.  I had the rare opportunity to chat with Burton Cummings recently about the summer tour, the true origin of “American Woman,” The life and times of The Guess Who, Canada, Wolfman Jack and so much more! This week we give thanks for another twofer with a couple of legends. First up is my brief chat with jazz icon Les McCann. This weekend Les is releasing a special box set for Record Store Day, Never a Dull Moment - Live From Coast to Coast 66-67. This gorgeous collection showcases his mastery of the piano in the Trio setting and is an incredible piece of history. We're SO lucky to get a few minutes of his time. Then we hear from original Guess Who drummer Garry Peterson. The band has been without Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings for decades now, but the younger and hungrier group is still making great music today. This year they released the album Plein D'Amour which, I'm not kidding, sounds just like something Jellyfish would have released in the 90s. Garry describes the band dynamic now, his relationship with his old bandmates, and where this new sound came from. Enjoy!  www.lesmccannunlimited.com www.theguesswho.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

It features other stand out tracks such as “Headline” and “Across the Line.” Artwork for the release was provided by world renowned graphic designer Ioannis (Deep Purple, Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, etc.).In February, The Guess Who shared the first single off their new album, "The King." Upon its release, the track immediately landed on multiple editorial Spotify playlists. With follow up singles "Plein D'Amour" and "Headline," the three tracks racked up over 250,000 streams collectively and making this record the highest new release in the band's history. The Guess Who Bio:The Guess Who is a legendary Canadian band who enjoyed chart topping hits in the late 60s and early 70s with an impressive catalogue of songs including "American Woman," "These Eyes," and "No Time." During the course of its career, the band has released 11 studio albums, and charted 14 Top 40 hit singles, 2 of which went to number one in the United States. The Guess Who is best known internationally for its 1970 album, American Woman, which hit number one in Canada and number nine in the United States, with five other albums also hitting the top ten in Canada. Band members Derek Sharp, Michael Staertow, Leonard Shaw, Michael Devin, and founding member, Garry Peterson have crafted a collection of songs that raises the bar and continues to take things up a notch both musically and sonically. Before The Guess Who, Michael was the guitarist for Lou Gramm. Michael is one of only a few guitar players to work with Lou Gramm, the voice of “Hot Blooded,” “Head Games,” “Juke Box Hero,” “I Want to Know to What Love Is” and other signature songs of the classic-rock era. That makes him a full-fledged member of a significant guitar-playing fraternity that also includes Foreigner founder Mick Jones, Nils Lofgren and Vivian Campbell. Michael has been the focus of articles in Guitar World, Guitar One and Vintage Guitar magazines, and he was featured in Gbase.com's Gearhead Gazette as well as  featured on many popular podcasts. An aspiring vlogger, Michael captures short scenes from life on the road with Lou Gramm and artists like Dennis Elliot and Deen Castronovo to share on social media. Michael has also added Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp “Rock Star Counselor” to his pedigree.

He expresses his admiration for musicians that continue to come up with new material that is both good and fresh, and that's exactly what he sees with their new album. Pipeman asks Derek and Gary to tell us about the new album and what people can expect from it. Derek explains that the new album was a conscious effort, made with the aim of capturing the band's camaraderie in the recording. He further explains that the band was together for six days in one place, which was a wonderful experience. Gary explains that Derek is responsible for writing and producing the album, and it took him 60 years to get the band together to play this kind of music. He is thrilled to be associated with someone so talented that must be heard by the rest of the world. Derek adds that some of the songs were challenging, and they talked about doing stuff with difficult arrangements, but they just went for it. The band's passion and love for music and each other come out in their music. Pipeman acknowledges that not all bands are fortunate enough to have such a strong bond after working together for so long. He admires their respect for each other, which comes through in their music. Pipeman concludes by thanking Derek and Gary from The Guess Who for being on his show, saying he is looking forward to hearing more from them in the future. On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Derek and Gary from The Guess Who. Pipeman tells the story of how he first heard of The Guess Who, through his older brother's album. THE TITLE TRACK AND BRAND-NEW VIDEO ARE OUT NOW! The band released its first single The King on February 10 and it immediately landed on multiple Spotify playlists racking up over 50,000 streams, making it the highest new release in the band's history. The band is now gearing up to release its latest creation, Plein D'Amour. Band members Derek Sharp, Michael Staertow, Leonard Shaw, Michael Devin, and founding member, Garry Peterson have crafted a collection of songs that raises the bar and continues to take it up a notch both musically and sonically. Derek Sharp, songwriter and lead vocalist had this to say about the latest single, “The title track/grand finale, Plein D'Amour, is a simple message. Black, White, Blue, Red, Up, Down, All Around may be part of the great illusion, but we are all one. Being genuine and full of love transmutes fear and anger into clarity and joy! It is the ultimate answer to everything…and it costs nothing.” The album Plein D'Amour will be released on June 30 through the Guess Who's new partnership with Deko Entertainment. Vinyl details will be revealed shortly. Artwork for the release is provided by world renowned graphic designer Ioannis (Deep Purple, Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, etc.) with limited prints to be autographed by both the Guess Who and Ioannis. The album Plein D'Amour was recorded at Villa Sound in Singhampton, Ontario, Canada, with Adam Fair, featuring other stand out tracks such as “Headline” and “Across the Line”. Who is the finest rock band to come out of Winnipeg, Canada?  That's right, The Guess Who.  In January 1970 they released their sixth studio album, American Woman, and were riding the wave of one of their most commercially successful albums in March.  This album took a harder rock direction from their formerly psychedelic and pop sound, and would produce their only number 1 hit in the US, making them the first Canadian band to top the American Hot 100 chart. The Guess Who got their name in 1965 when their record label, Quality Records, released a single under the name “Guess Who?”  They were attempting to build a buzz that the song might be a famous band recording incognito, but the name stuck.  At the time of recording American Woman, the group consisted of Burton Cummings on lead vocals, keyboards, and harmonica, Randy Bachman on lead guitar, Jim Kale on bass, and Garry Peterson on drums.  All band members contributed backing vocals to the strong harmonies of the group.  This album would be Randy Bachman's last with the group (until rejoining in 1983), as he would go on to form Bachman-Turner Overdrive.Friend of the show Bill Cook stands in for the vacationing Brian Dickhute as we look back on one of Canada's greatest rock bands.  No TimeThis first single off the album is a reverse “Dear John” letter.  The song was originally on their album “Canned Wheat,” but made a reappearance on this album with a faster tempo.  “Seasons change and so do I, you need not wonder why.  There's no time left for you.”American WomanThis title song may be their best known of The Guess Who songs.  Randy Bachman started this riff while tuning his guitar during a concert after breaking a string, and turned it into a chart-topping hit.  The lyrics reflect the differences between girls in the States and girls in Canada.  American women were considered “dangerous” by the band.  8:15This deeper cut is talking about meeting at a place at 8:15.  We enjoyed the jangley guitar and the drum break in this one.No Sugar TonightThis track was the B-side from the American Woman single.  Randy Bachman had written a song called “No Sugar Tonight,” and Burton Cummings thought it was too short.  They added a Cummings song that was “New Mother Nature” to lengthen it.  “No Sugar Tonight” was inspired when Bachman saw a tough biker berated by his wife, and she shouted out the final line “And one more thing...you ain't gettin' no sugar tonight!” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Intro to ABC's “Wide World of Sports”The event that came to be known as “the agony of defeat” occurred this month when Vinko Bogataj crashed during a ski jump attempt. STAFF PICKS:Celebrate by Three Dog NightBruce's staff pick peaked at number 15, and is off Three Dog Night's second studio album called "Suitable for Framing."  There are three vocalists for Three Dog Night, and they're all taking lead on this song.  Danny Hutton is on lead in verse 1, Chuck Negron is on lead in verse 2, and Cory Wells is on verse 3.  The song also features the Chicago horn section.Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) by Edison LighthouseWayne features a group with Tony Burrows on lead.  Burrows would have three hits fronting three different bands - Edison Lighthouse, White Plains, and Brotherhood of Man.Let  It Be by The BeatlesFriend of the show Bill Cook brings us this timeless epic song from the final days of The Beatles.  McCartney wrote this song during a time when the rest of his band members were moving on with their lives, and Paul wasn't sure where his life was going.  In a dream his mother - named Mary - comes to him and says, "let it be."(editors note:  it looks like Bruce was wrong about Ringo Starr living in Atlanta.  He has homes in London, Los Angeles, and Monte Carlo, so don't look for him in Buckhead!)Always Something There to Remind Me by R.B. GreavesRob's staff pick was authored by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.  R.B. Greaves recorded this version at Muscle Shoals, and took it to number 27.  Most people are probably more familiar with the Naked Eyes version from 1983, which took the song to number 20. LAUGH TRACK:Do the Funky Chicken by Rufus ThomasNothing finishes off a great podcast quite like doing the funky chicken!

OK we are pumped! Not only do we have our first musician on “Wait, I Know This!” but he's the drummer from The Guess Who” for God's sake!! Garry Peterson has been there from the start. A start which goes back to the late 50's and early 60's in Winnipeg, Canada. They began as “The Silvertones” playing in any venue that would have them but soon lead singer Allan Kowbell voted for a change. Playing off their love for british music and the group called The Shadows” they came up with the name “The Reflections”. Allan also said he needed a new name as well and took “Chad” from one of his favorite groups called “The Chad Mitchell Trio”. Using THAT and his first name he came up with “Chad Allan and The Reflections”. The group was off and running landing gigs all over the Winnipeg area and eventually getting signed to a modest label and becoming the region's go-to band for local events. Finally in December of 1964 , the band was running low on money and went to the studios of CJAY-TV and recorded “Shaking All Over”….oh, by the way time for yet another name…Chad Allan and The Expressions. COOL TRIVIA ALERT!: When Quality Records producer George Struth heard the song he thought it was a hit but didn't want DJ's and programming directors to think it was just another British Invasion wanna-be group so he came up with a plan that was pure genius. He sent out copies of the single with a plain white label and just the words “guess who” written on them. That way, he thought, the program directors might think it was the product of someone already famous. The plan worked and soon the “mystery record” soared up the Canadian charts and by June of 1964 they cracked the USA market selling a quarter of a million copies and reaching #22 on the Billboard Charts!! The band was on its way to fame and fortune. Although there were a few speedbumps here and there they did quite well with hits like “Laughing”, “Undun” and “No Time” but it wouldn't be until 1970 that they would get a number one hit in the US with the incredible “American Woman”. They are truly one of the best rock bands of the 60's and early 70's
