More than a century of civil rights activism reached a mountaintop with the arrival of a Black man in the Oval Office. But hopes for a unified, post-racial America were deflated when Barack Obama's presidency met with furious opposition. A white, right-wing backlash was brewing, and a volcanic new movement—a second civil rights movement—began to erupt. In the highly anticipated follow-up to his Eyes on the Prize, bestselling author Juan Williams turns his attention to the rise of a new 21st-century civil rights movement. In New Prize for These Eyes, Williams shines a light on this historic, new movement. Who are its heroes? Where is it headed? What fires, furies, and frustrations distinguish it from its predecessor? In the 20th century, Black activists and their white allies called for equal rights and an end to segregation. They appealed to the Declaration of Independence's defiant assertion that “all men are created equal.” They prioritized legal battles in the courtroom and legislative victories in Congress. Today's movement is dealing with new realities. Demographic changes have placed progressive whites in a new role among the largest, youngest population of Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians in the nation's history. Williams says the new generation is social media savvy, and they have an agenda fueled by discontent with systemic racism and the persistent scourge of police brutality. Today's activists are making history in a new economic and cultural landscape, and they are using a new set of tools and strategies to do so. Join us as Williams traces the arc of this new civil rights era, from Obama to Charlottesville to January 6th and a Confederate flag in the Capitol. It's more than a recounting of history. Williams offers a forward-looking call to action, urging Americans to get in touch with the progress made and hurdles yet to be overcome. Learn more about your ad choices. After the U.S. elected Barack Obama its first Black president in 2008, some assumed that this signaled a post-racial America. However, subsequent and serious incidents suggested this was not the case, inciting what some came to know as a second civil rights movement. Political correspondent, journalist, and historian Juan Williams explores this phenomenon in his latest release New Prize for These Eyes: The Rise of America's Second Civil Rights Movement. Who are the heroes of this movement? Where is it headed? What distinguishes it from its predecessor? Williams aims to answer these questions, exploring demographic changes, the rise and role of social media, and other critical shifts in the economic and cultural landscape. The author traces the arc of this new civil rights era, touching on subjects like the Obama presidency, Charlottesville, January 6th, and a Confederate flag in the Capitol. Exploring both past and present, New Prize for These Eyes will be of interest to historians or anyone concerned about America's future. It encourages citizens to learn about the progress the nation has made, as well as obstacles that have yet to be overcome. Juan Williams is is a prizewinning journalist and historian. In 1987, journalist Juan Williams helped illuminate the Civil Rights Movement with "Eyes on the Prize," a groundbreaking book that brought history to life and became an essential chronicle of the fight for racial equality. Nearly four decades later, he returns with "New Prize for These Eyes," a powerful update looking at the 21st-century movement. Geoff Bennett discussed the work with Williams. Journalist and author Juan Williams joins Margaret Hoover to talk about civil rights in America as the nation prepares to inaugurate Donald Trump as president on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Williams, who wrote the companion book to the 1987 PBS documentary series Eyes on the Prize, discusses his latest book, New Prize for These Eyes, which charts the progress of what he calls the second civil rights movement in the 21st century. Williams details how civil rights activism has changed in the Black Lives Matter era, explains why he considers Barack Obama one of the country's most misunderstood presidents, and reflects on the challenges faced by a decentralized movement that lacks prominent leaders like Dr. King. The Fox News senior political analyst assesses his role in right-wing media and comments on Trump's selection of Fox colleagues like Pete Hegseth to serve in his Cabinet. He also addresses the rollback of diversity efforts in corporate America and the prospects for a third civil rights movement in the future. Burton Cummings' voice has been rated among the finest in rock music. Today he continues at the top of his game as performer, singer, songwriter, poet and recording artist. As lead singer and songwriter for Canada's original rock ‘n' roll superstars, The Guess Who, Burton scored an unprecedented string of international hit singles and albums including “American Woman,” “These Eyes,” “Laughing,” “No Time,” “Share the Land,” “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature,” “Clap for the Wolfman”, “Albert Flasher” and others, all written or co-written by Burton. By 1970, The Guess Who had sold more records than the entire Canadian music industry combined before breaking up in 1975. The group achieved a long list of firsts including first Canadian group to reach #1 on Billboard charts -- holding that spot for three weeks - and first to earn a platinum album for U.S. sales of more than one million copies. Rolling Stone magazine hailed The Guess Who as “one of rock's most consistently fascinating maverick bands” with a succession of songs “that has few equals among contemporary North American groups.” Dick Clark described the group as rock innovators and ambassadors of Canadian music. Beginning his career as a solo artist in 1976, Burton continued his winning streak with a gold record for his solo debut single “Stand Tall,” produced by legendary hitmaker Richard Perry who numbered among his clients Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon and Ringo Starr. The choice of producer was evidence of Burton's star power in the music industry. He followed his inaugural solo success with more than a dozen hit singles and albums including “I'm Scared,” “My Own Way to Rock,” “I Will Play a Rhapsody,” “Timeless Love,” “Break It to Them Gently,” “Dream of a Child,” and “You Saved My Soul.” Sold-out tours across Canada and the United States solidified Burton's stature as a top entertainer. He starred in several highly rated television specials and, between 1977 and 1980, earned five Juno Awards for Best Male Vocalist and Best Album, serving as host of the annual Juno gala a record four times. Burton's 1978 album Dream of a Child became the first quadruple platinum-selling album by a Canadian artist. Through the ‘80s and ‘90s, Burton continued to tour and joined Beatles drummer Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. In 1980, a starring role in the feature film Melanie with Miami Vice star Don Johnson earned Burton a Genie Award for Best Original Song. He also launched his acclaimed Up Close and Alone solo concert series. A live album of the same name followed. The success of Lenny Kravitz' cover of “American Woman” in the hit feature film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me brought renewed attention to the original Guess Who. The group reunited in 1999 for the closing ceremonies of the Pan-American Games with a television audience numbering in the tens of millions. Several high-profile North American tours followed. As the VOICE of all the classic Guess Who hit songs, Burton has toured with his long-time band, for the past twenty-three years across North America as well as joining Randy Bachman onstage as Bachman Cummings, performing his songs from the original The Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Burton's solo career. Described as Canadian rock ‘n' roll royalty, a national treasure, and a living legend, for Burton Cummings there has always been one constant: he remains true to himself and his own way to rock… and continuing to perform the songs the way they were originally conceived by the artist who sang and wrote/co-wrote them. Burton joins us this week to share his musical story and lets us know about his other passion - writing poetry. For more information head to his website burtoncummings.com

This week on Finding Your Bliss we have a show devoted to music. Educator, marketing genius and artist, Dr. Amara Pope is here to talk about how she helps champion representation in the Canadian music industry, which is beautifully exemplified in her amazing TEDx Talk. With over a decade of experience in marketing, brand management, and digital media across several industries, Dr. Amara Pope also holds a Ph.D. in Media studies from Western University. Her Ph.D research is fascinating. It's focused on the intersections of media, culture and race, particularly within popular music and digital media. Dr. Pope also earned a Master's in Communication Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University and completed a Joint Honours Bachelor's Degree in Rhetoric and Professional Writing and Fine Arts with a Digital Media Specialization from the University of Waterloo. She is dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices in Canada and fostering diversity, which as mentioned, is beautifully exemplified in her TEDx Talk. She has delivered impactful lectures at prestigious universities, such as the University of Southern California, and more. She has also spoken at conferences and served as a guest panelist all across Canada. Her insights have been featured in notable media outlets including CTV, CBC, iHeart Radio, Global Television, NBC and others. When not immersed in her professional pursuits, Dr. Pope enjoys weightlifting and experimenting with oil, acrylic and mixed-media painting. Also on the program, we have Juno Award-winning R&B, Soul, and Pop singer Sean Jones. As he puts it, “It's been a long time…but it always feels good to come home.” Sean Jones is referring to the kind of '90s inspired R&B music he made with the highly successful boy band, "In Essence." The group rose to fame in the early 90's with the hits, "Friend Of Mine," "IE IE" and "You Will Never Find" and received worldwide recognition for their ability to combine Rap, Pop, and R&B with exciting performances. In 2004, "In Essence" won a Juno Award for their debut album before breaking up in 2006. Post break up, Jones took an interest in songwriting and producing. Over the next ten years, he put together a catalogue of songs that stretched in genre from soft rock to Motown Revival. It was his take on soulful classics however, that would eventually land him a unique and incredible opportunity to showcase his skills. In 2015, Sean became the first artist to secure a solo summer residency at the historic Casa Loma in downtown Toronto. The Monday night revue titled “Soul In The City” gave Jones and his nine-piece band, "The Righteous Echo," the chance to showcase his original songs, as well as their take on popular old school hits. The show was also a wonderful opportunity to give emerging artists a stage to share their talents. “Soul In The City,” through Jones' hard work and tenacity, grew to 1000+ people every Monday night. The overwhelming success he had with that residency led to WestJet, Canada's second-largest airline, handpicking Sean to create a musical experience for the passengers aboard their flights. For the project titled, “The WestJet Boarding Sessions,” Jones recorded new versions of classic Canadian hits, such as “These Eyes” by The Guess Who, “The Weight” by The Band, and “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan and flew across Canada to interview some of these cherished musical icons. His latest album, has a familiar sound that many have not heard from him in almost 15 years. Jones' most recent album, “Weekend Lover” features a set of songs that are reminiscent of 90's R&B, something Jones is very familiar with. Says Jones: “Growing up, my parents played all the classics, Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, The Supremes…the list goes on and on. I loved all of it then and to this day. However, the music of the late '80s and '90s is what sparked my interest in performing. There was something about the musical energy of that time. The R&B/Pop son ...
This week on Classic Vinyl Podcast, Justin and Tyler review the Guess Who and their hit song from 1969, These Eyes. Co-written by Randy Bachman and lead singer Burton Cummings, this was the bands first major hit in the US. Give it a listen and let us know what you think.
BURTON CUMMINGS THE LEGENDARY VOICE OF THE GUESS WHO 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' EPISODE 10 Burton Cummings is the legendary voice, songwriter, and keyboardist for Canada's own classic rock superstars The Guess Who. Although the group has had numerous personnel changes throughout the years, the most prominent members have been Burton Cummings and guitarist Randy Bachman. Cummings was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His first band was an R&B group called The Deverons. The band released two singles on the REO Records label. In 1965, Cummings joined The Guess Who replacing Bob Ashley on keyboards and eventually Chad Allan on vocals. The Guess Who scored commercially with their first international hit “These Eyes” (#6 Billboard Hit) in 1969. The track was featured on their album Wheatfield Soul on the RCA record label. The single was written by Bachman/Cummings and was their first to reach the top ten. The Guess Who followed with a succession of Top 40 hits including … “Laughing” (#10 U.S. Hit, #1Canada -written by Bachman/Cummings) and “Undun” (#22 U.S. Hit). 1970 would prove to be the most pivotal year for The Guess Who. The group scored (2) #1 Hits in the U.S. with “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" and “American Woman” the group's biggest selling single. The Guess Who also spawned the hits …. “No Time” (#5 U.S. #1 Canada -written by Bachman/Cummings), “Hand Me Down World” (#17 U.S. Hit) and “Share The Land” (#10 U.S. Hit -written by Burton Cummings). Randy Bachman left The Guess Who in 1970 and would eventually form Bachman- Turner Overdrive. Subsequent albums released by The Guess Who … Canned Wheat (1969), American Woman (1970), Share The Land (1970), So Long, Bennatyne (1971), Rockin' (1972), Artificial Paradise (1973). In 1973, Burton Cummings and The Guess Who released one of the group's most underrated albums entitled The Guess Who #10. The album was a clear diversion from the band's roots but spotlighted brilliant lyrical content and virtuoso musicianship. The album featured Burton Cummings composition “Glamour Boy.” The track was a jab at David Bowie's glitter rock insurgence. The album also featured the profound “Cardboard Empire” written by Bill Wallace and Kurt Winter, while hauntingly performed by Cummings. In 1974, The Guess Who collaborated on their final Top 40 single entitled “Clap For The Wolfman,” (#6 U.S. Billboard Hit) an applicable tribute to legendary radio and TV personality Wolfman Jack. Subsequent releases: The Guess Who #10 (1973), Road Food (1974), Flavours (1974), Power in the Music (1975), The Way They Were (1976). The Guess Who disbanded in 1975. In 1983, Bachman, Cummings, Jim Kale and Garry Peterson reunited as The Guess Who to play a series of Canadian gigs and recorded the Together Again live album and video. Bachman and Cummings reunited again in 1997 to perform in Winnipeg for a disaster relief fund raiser. An eclectic Guess Who reunion ensued in 2000 featuring Bachman, Cummings, McDougall, Kale, and Peterson. Bill Wallace eventually replaced Kale while the group toured regularly through 2003. A live album and DVD followed at the end of the 2000 tour. The Guess Who was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2001. Cummings received an additional Star in 2011. The Guess Who performed for an estimated 450,000 people at Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto, a benefit concert in 2003. The Guess Who continues to tour with only original members … drummer Garry Peterson and bassist Jim Kale. Burton Cummings also amassed a widely successful solo career. He landed a huge hit with “Stand Tall” (#10 U.S. #1 Hit Canada) in 1976. Burton Cummings solo albums …Burton Cummings (1976), My Own Way to Rock (1977), Dream of a Child (1978), Woman Love (1980), The Best of Burton Cummings (1980), Sweet Sweet (1981), Heart (1984), Plus Signs (1990), The Burton Cummings Collection (1994), Up Close and Alone (1996), Above the Ground (2008). In 2002, The Burton Cummings Theatre for the Performing Arts in Winnipeg, Manitoba was renamed to dedicate the singer and songwriter. In 2008, Cummings released the highly- acclaimed CD Above The Ground. All the tracks on the release are written by Cummings. The album also features his touring band The Carpet Frogs. In 2009, Cummings received the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honors. In 2012, Burton Cummings Massey Hall was released –an incredible live CD recorded in Toronto. Most recently … Burton Cummings is on a summer tour. He'll be releasing a book of poetry soon entitled, ‘The Writings of B. L. Cummings,' and a video series called RUFF. Very few bands have survived numerous member changes — let alone having smash hits with each lineup — but The Guess Who's motto is “the music is the message.”The most recent and up-to-date version of the band has mastered a wildly entertaining romp through the early hits mixed in with their current creations while managing to take the whole experience to a new level. Their most recent musical offering is stunningly sophisticated, searingly emotional, and musically eclectic while remaining eminently singalongable.Their live show is a celebration of life, being alive, and thriving in these uncertain times. Passion, determination, dedication, focus, challenge. These qualities have remained consistent throughout Randy Bachman's lengthy and remarkable career. He is a legendary figure in the music world through his talents as a guitarist, songwriter, performer, record producer and mentor. As founder of two formidable rock bands, The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Randy has accrued over 120 platinum, gold and silver album/singles awards from around the world. His songwriting has garnered the coveted #1 spot on radio play lists in over 20 countries and his total record sales exceed 40 million albums and singles.Randy's distinctive brand of guitar-driven, no-holds-barred hard rock is instantly recognized worldwide.Randy's music is a veritable soundtrack of the last forty years of popular music. “These Eyes”, “Laughing”, “Undun”, “No Time”, “American Woman” and “No Sugar Tonight” with The Guess Who all resonate with the Bachman touch. Between 1969 and 1970, The Guess Who sold more records than the entire Canadian music industry combined with the Bachman-Cummings songwriting team becoming the most celebrated partnership in Canadian music to that point. The Guess Who brought Randy's music to North America. He followed that with “Let it Ride”, “Roll on Down The Highway”, “Takin' Care of Business”, “Looking Out For #1”, “Hey You” and “You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet” with Bachman-Turner Overdrive, taking his name and hit-making abilities worldwide. In 1974, BTO was the biggest-selling recording act in popular music.Randy also stands in rarified air as a member of a very exclusive handful of artists who have topped the charts in two different bands: “American Woman” (co-written by Randy) with The Guess Who and “You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet” (composed wholly by Randy) as leader and singer with Bachman-Turner Overdrive. In addition, “No Sugar Tonight”, written by Randy, was a double A-sided #1 hit paired with “American Woman”.Randy's songs have been recorded by a wide spectrum of artists including Lenny Kravitz' version of “American Woman” which topped the charts 29 years after the original, as well as appearing on television and movie soundtracks including Seinfeld, The Simpsons, American Beauty, and Austin Powers 2. He has been animated on the SIMPSONS and is listed in the Guinness Book of Worlds Records.Randy Bachman's name is synonymous with the guitar. The instrument is an extension of who he is and he is rarely far away from a guitar. His playing has earned the respect and admiration of the finest guitar practitioners, many of whom have sought him out both as a kindred spirit and collaborator. Since first picking up the instrument in his teen years in Winnipeg, Canada and teaching himself to play, the guitar has been Randy's first love. He was fortunate early on to be mentored by one of the greatest guitar players of all time, the legendary Lenny Breau. Those tutorials from Breau served Randy well allowing him to develop a versatility that is the envy of his contemporaries. In 2006, Randy paid tribute his mentor by recording his acclaimed Jazz Thing album which, through digital technology, allowed Randy to duet with hero. To honour Lenny Breau's legacy, Randy founded Guitarchives Records whose goal has been to rescue and release otherwise lost Breau recordings.Randy's career has been built on his indomitable drive and dedication to music. Never content to rest on his stellar laurels, Randy has consistently reinvented himself. He has released albums, in a variety of genres and styles throughout his career, from hard rock to blues, country, and jazz.As host of the top-rated CBC and Sirius XM radio program Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap, Randy's listeners each week worldwide number in the millions. He can also add best-selling author to his numerous list of accomplishments, having penned both Vinyl Tap Stories and Tales From Beyond The Tap.
Join us as we go back to 2002 once again, this time dropping in on the bucolic scene of Southern Illinois University for an evening at the Shryock Auditorium. Carbondale, Illinois, bitches! Ween had played eight shows in nine days across the South and Midwest, and this was the finale, yet another tour de force from this era! Sometimes the trip can loom almost as large as the show itself. This was one of those times. The drive out was 13.5 hours for me, and more than 15.5 for Shane; a true overnighter complete with a sleep rotation. To this day, it remains our longest Ween road trip. Infamously, on the drive home, at our hotel, we got caught up in a massive tornado outbreak. We were fine, but nothing like the power going out mid-tornado warning, and not knowing what county you're in. It really hit home the next day, when we found out that actual tornadoes had, in fact, torn through the area just miles from our hotel. But I digress: we're here to talk about a show, aren't we? And Ween came to rock. Despite a Chocolate and Cheese heavy evening with commons aplenty, the band's musicianship was impeccable, and they dug into the vault just enough to content any true-hearted fan. Some highlights include a talk box infused jam in Voodoo Lady followed up immediately with Spring Theme, and Deez Nutz, which was the absolute highlight of the evening. For the uninitiated, Deez Nutz is a parody of the Guess Who's hit These Eyes, where every mention of “eyes” is replaced with “nutz.” It features Claude's falsetto on vocals, and has only been played live fifteen times, just once since 2003. They then brought the first set to a close with the super rare If You Could Save Yourself (You'd Save Us All). The night closed with an epic encore that featured six songs, among them a cover of CSNY's Ohio, and a Tender Situation with Papa Gener taking a turn at guitar hero. The night had plenty of brown for sure! Baggy trousers, hanging shirts, tentacles and Furry flirts! Ben and Tao reminisce about school days gone by after trying to get laid in supernatural dating sim, Monster Prom. Donny Most - I Only Want What's Mine (1980) With Linda Purl as "Lorree". She played Pam Beesly's mother in The Office. The one Michael Scott dated until he found out she was too old. Freddy Cannon - Suzanne Somers (1981) The sounds like a fake crowd. Man, Freddy Cannon tried EVERYTHING. Denny Greene - Love Party (1976) I picked out the nuttiest title from Sha Na Na man Denny Greene's one solo album. Spot on. Immaculately produced dross to my ears. Freddy and Connie Cannon - Blankcheck Market (1981) B-side of "Suzanne Somers". Nothing gets wasted on VINYL NIGHT!! More fake audience hilarity. Chuck Barris - Too Rich (1969) Here's Chuck Barris's Wikipedia thingie. Too rich an American tale to do justice here. Chuck Barris - I Know a Child (1969) B-Side of "Too Rich". Nowhere near as good. Denny Greene - Great Escape (1976) This is different from the 12" single. A little less processed, and the bass is nowhere near as prominent. Citizen - I Am A Citizen (1980) I forget how I found out about Citizen, but I'm glad I did, sorta. I would love to talk to Donn Marier to see what the original plan was. Who decided on the shoulder pads? What was it like recording that video? Did you have any success? The main thing I got from listening to this album was that Donn Marier was an amazing guitarist. Well, someone in his band was. Donn Marier's website is dead. But here's the video. Freddy Cannon - Sugar (1976) ANYTHING!!!! Including Disco. Freddy Cannon - Sugar (inst. ) (1976) The b-side. Citizen - Advertising (Rock Rock)! (1980) No, Wall Street!! You will not take me into your consumer-driven clutches. Scott Simon - Think About Me (1980) Another Sha Na Na guy puts out an inoffensive record. This one is more reminiscent of the original group. Fun in places, competent. Not great. Lou Christie - Wood Child (1971) To me, a great record that very few people know. Hard to find a copy that isn't a cut-out. That means that the record company sends them as wholesale to retailers as non-returnable items, meaning that the store cannot send them back to the distributor for a refund; the reason for the cut or hole in the packaging is to mark the item as non-returnable. The marking also serves to prevent the retailer from selling the discounted item at full price. All the albums that I have accrued lately are actually cut-outs. The music is the same. The vinyl is the same. It's just a way of preventing them from being perpetually returned by retailers. That gal is Twyla Herbert, LC's songwriting partner. J Jocko - That's The Song (1975) The best of the three solo SNN albums during my recent spree. Co-produced by my personal friend Elliot Randall. Slick, pretty fun, and one gets the impression J Jocko doesn't care what anyone thinks. Lou Christie - Waco (1971) J Jocko - Lip Service (1975) Lou Christie - Lighthouse (1971) J Jocko - Tomorrow’s Rising (1975) Lou Christie - Paint America Love (1971) The Guess Who - Country Disco (1981) This HAS TO be a contract fulfillment record. Remember those AM hits? "American Woman"? "These Eyes? "It's Clap For The Wolfman"? Only the bass player remains. Screamin' Scott Simon - I Ain't Got a Home (1980)
Burton Cummings is a genuine Canadian musical icon. Best known for his decade with the Guess Who and "Clap For The Wolfman", "These Eyes and "American Woman", he's also enjoyed a solo career with "Stand Tall", "My Own Way To Rock", "Break It To Them Gently" and many other hits. I refer to him as “King of the Keyboards” and he does not disappoint. Burton and fellow Guess Who alumnus Randy Bachman grew up in Winnipeg, where they were heavily influenced by radio: particularly by one of Canada's premier Top 40 radio stations, 50,000 watt CKY (home of Peter Jackson, Daryl B and Chuck McCoy). Burton also remembers listening to old buddy Dick Biondi playing "Da Doo Ron Ron" by the Crystals on Chicago's WLS! Legend has it the band's "Albert Flasher" was inspired by a visit to Vancouver's C-FUN. Burton is in the Juno Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and has the Order of Canada. In addition Burton has a theatre named for him in Winnipeg. Great honors for a great Canadian. You'll want to check out Burton's Facebook page facebook.com/burtoncummings. Lots of great stories from his career, Winnipeg memories and Burton's take on the music we grew up with. Well worth a visit! This photo with Burton Cummings was taken backstage at the Red Robinson Show Theatre. The B.C. Lions sweater was a gift from the late Bobby Ackles on my 70th birthday. It says “ROBINSON” and the number 70 on the back and just the number on the front. I wore it on stage in honour of the Lions' first outdoor win since 1982. After the last four decades mostly in the United States, Burton now calls Moose Jaw, SK home. How Canadian is that? Audio courtesy Global TV's Close Encounters series.

PART ONE Scott and Paul reveal the winner of their latest contest. Find out who's getting an autographed copy of Steve Dorff's memoir! PART TWO - 02:39 mark Is "Stutter Rock" a thing? The guys connect some dots and dig into a surprisingly pervasive trend in music history. PART THREE - 8:05 mark Scott and Paul's origin story - including a particularly disappointing night backstage at a Guess Who reunion show PART FOUR - 12:52 mark Randy stops by Songcraft World Headquarters to talk about his new George Harrison tribute album; how The Guess Who got its name by accident; his Alex Trebek connection; how he bluffed his way into musical success; why his approach to songwriting is all about borrowing and re-purposing; the '60s band he thought was even better than The Beatles; what he spent all his money on instead of drugs; the Bachman-Turner Overdrive hit that ripped off an Antonín Dvořák classical piece only to then be ripped off by The Doobie Brothers; and why one of his biggest hits was an inside joke with his brother that was never intended to be heard by the public. ABOUT RANDY BACHMAN As the co-founder, guitarist, and primary songwriter of two legendary classic rock bands, Randy Bachman has earned over 120 gold and platinum records. After landing a handful of Top 10 singles in Canada, The Guess Who scored a string of Bachman-penned hits, beginning with “These Eyes,” a Top 10 single Randy wrote with bandmate Burton Cummings. They went on to find success with “Laughing,” “Undone,” “No Time,” and “American Woman,” which was the first single by a Canadian band to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The B-side, “No Sugar Tonight,” claimed the #1 spot soon after. Randy walked away from The Guess Who at the height of the band’s success, recording an instrumental album and forming the group that would come to be known as Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Like Paul McCartney before him and Dave Grohl after him, Randy is one of only a small handful of artists to find major success with more than one band. During his stint with BTO he wrote their biggest hits, including “Let it Ride,” “Takin’ Care of Business,” “Hey You,” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet,” which was an international hit that topped the charts in multiple countries. Bachman has reunited in various configurations with his Guess Who and BTO bandmates over the years, in addition to collaborating on various projects with artists ranging from fellow Canadian rock legend Neil Young to his son, Tal Bachman, who is best known for the 1999 hit “She’s So High.” Randy is a best-selling author, a member of the Musicians Hall of Fame, the host of the Vinyl Tap radio show, and a continually prolific songwriter, musician, and recording artist. His most recent album is By George – By Bachman, a tribute to the songs of George Harrison.

Burton Cummings is the former lead singer and keyboardist for the legendary Canadian rock band The Guess Who. During his 10 year tenure in the band, from 1965 to 1975, he sang, wrote or co-wrote many of their most recognizable songs, including "American Woman," "No Time", "Share the Land", "These Eyes", and "Clap for the Wolfman".In this interview Burton talks about the historic Sarsstock Concert, his relationship with longtime collaborator Randy Bachman, his chance meeting with Jim Morrison and his thoughts on the band that now tours under the moniker of The Guess Who.
Few artists can claim to have made a bigger impact on popular music than Randy Bachman, widely regarded as the “architect of Canadian rock ‘n' roll.” His renowned songwriting acumen produced “You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet,” “American Woman,” “Let it Ride, “Taking Care of Business,” “Looking Out for #1,” “No Sugar Tonight” and “These Eyes,” tracks that have become pop‐culture touchstones. One of the Great White North's favourite musical sons, Bachman co-founded iconic bands The Guess Who and Bachman‐Turner Overdrive, earning over 120 gold and platinum albums/singles around the world as a performer and producer, and amassing more than 40 million in record sales. He's also no stranger to garnering coveted #1 spots on radio playlists, having done so in over 20 countries. His accomplishments haven't gone unrecognized, of course. In addition to his induction into the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville, Bachman has the distinction of being the only one of his countrymen to be inducted twice into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, most recently alongside his fellow original Bachman‐Turner Overdrive members in 2014. A recipient of the Order of Canada, Bachman's overwhelming international influence and popularity was acknowledged in 2011 by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), in the form of the Global Impact Award. Despite all of his success, Bachman was determined to move forward musically, and in order to do so, he had to look backward, and revisit the glorious days of the ‘60s British blues boom. Using the amplified blues‐rock of Cream, Led Zeppelin and The Who as his blueprints, Bachman and a newly formed power trio envisioned his new album, Heavy Blues, as an explosive, raw reinterpretation of that music with a distorted, modern edge. We catch up with Randy Bachman #RandyBachman #BTO #Guesswho #slackermorningshow101thefox

The group notched up a long list of firsts including the first Canadian group to reach #1 on the Billboard charts (holding that spot for three weeks) and the first to earn a platinum album for sales of over 1 million copies in the US. Rolling Stone magazine hailed the Guess Who as “one of rock's most consistently fascinating maverick bands, with a succession of meritorious songs that has few equals among contemporary North American groups.” Dick Clark described the group as rock innovators and ambassadors of Canadian music.
Enjoy an encore episode as BlazinRy Radio host Ryan Holmes welcomes Garry Peterson, founding member of the legendary rock band behind classics like American Woman and These Eyes, The Guess Who.
