FIRST AIRED: 6/23/23 My guest on E272 of #thePOZcast is Jesse Cole, The Man In The Yellow Tux himself! Jesse is the founder and owner of Fans First Entertainment, home to the Savannah Bananas as well as The Party Animals baseball teams. Jesse created Banana Ball, which is a twist on classic baseball meant to be the most entertaining, engaging, and fan-first event in the game. Jesse got his start as a leader in the sports and entertainment worlds at age 23 when he was appointed GM of the Gastonia Grizzlies. When ticket sales were moving slowly, he jumped into introducing first-class entertainment into the world of baseball. Many summarize the end-product of Banana Ball to being like the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball, but as you guys are about to find out Jesse has built and continues to build so much more. The 2021 Ballpark Digest Awards season continues with a chat with the Savannah Bananas' Jesse Cole, winner of an Editor's Choice Award, who is single-handedly working to bring fun and a new spirit back into the increasingly staid world of baseball.Jesse Goldberg-Strassler and Kevin Reichard discuss the 2021 season with the ever-energetic Cole, the Man in the Yellow Tux. In a year when the baseball world is struggling to attract younger fans and shorten games, the Savannah Bananas struck a nerve with those younger fans. Attracting capacity crowds to Savannah's Grayson Stadium and embarking on a sold-out One City World Tour, Cole and his team upend all the rules of baseball a la the Harlem Globetrotters, attracting new fans to the sport thanks to plenty of national coverage from the likes of ESPN, Boston Globe and USA Today. That success has led to an Editor's Choice Award in the 2021 Ballpark Digest AwardsSome highlights of the discussion:·      Cole and his wife Emily launched the Bananas in 2016, coming to Georgia after running the Gastonia Grizzlies, formerly in the Coastal Plain League. The emphasis, they decided, would be on plenty of entertainment in the stands, with all-inclusive food and drink. After a slow start—two ticket sales in the first three months—the pair decided to go all-in on the entertainment side, a bet that paid off in a big way with sellout crowds, attracting fans from every state in the union. That led to Banana Ball, unique variations on the rules of baseball.·      Flush with that success at home, the Bananas took their show on the road for the One City World Tour, resulting in two sold-out games at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile, Ala. That success is leading to a longer World Tour in March 2022, featuring stops at spring-training, MiLB and MLB Partner League ballparks. The pro team hits the road and plays Banana Ball (which Jesse explains); the summer-collegiate team plays by normal baseball rules and snared a 2021 Coastal Plain League championship.·      Though the Bananas received plenty of mainstream media coverage, the key to the team's success means reaching fans where they are—and that means social media like TikTok, where the Bananas have 912,000 followers. What they get isn't a traditional social-media menu of game highlights and game-winning hits, but rather game highlights like infield karaoke, batters competing on stilts, and batters introducing themselves when coming up to bat. Yes, it's silly and more than a little absurdist, but it's entertaining as all heck. Anyone who hates batflips will be flummoxed; anyone who loves some flash in their baseball game will be entranced. Jesse Goldberg-Strassler is Voice of the Lansing Lugnuts and author of The Baseball Thesaurus and the upcoming second edition of The Football Thesaurus, both from August Publications. Kevin Reichard is editor of Ballpark Digest and founder/publisher at August Publications.

Imagine if you could double, triple or even quadruple your word of mouth referrals. What if word about your firm spread so far and wide that people were lining up at your door? And what if you could do that without spending a single dime on advertising or marketing? Now that might sound like a nightmare to you-you're fine where you are, you don't want any more work, and you don't want to make a larger impact. However, since you're listening to this podcast, I'm guessing you're someone who wants to learn and grow - you're always looking for a better way of doing things. That's why I'm excited to tell you about today's guest, who comes from an industry far, far away from architecture and design. I think some of the most powerful business breakthroughs we can have is by looking at other industries to see how and why they are having success, and seeing how we can apply these lessons to the business of architecture and design. Today I bring you a story about baseball. Known as The PT Barnum of Baseball, Jesse Cole is the founder of Fans First Entertainment. Shortly after graduating from college in 2007, Jesse became the General Manager of a Minor-league baseball team, the Gastonia Grizzlies. When Jesse signed on, the Grizzlies had no sponsors, no money, and few fans. Jesse knew he needed to do something different. By the end of the first season, the Grizzlies were playing to sold-out crowds of fans. He miraculously turned around the team. In 2014 Jesse and his wife took on another challenge by opening a new baseball team in Savannah, Georgia, which they named the Savanna Bananas. Getting past the local criticism of the strange name, Jesse knew he was on to something when the team launch day went viral on media around the world. Suddenly, thousands of people wanted a Savannah Bananas hat or T-shirt. Since then, the team plays to sold-out crowds. Jesse sums up his success simply: Be different. He's been featured on MSNBC, ESPN, NPR and other media outlets. He just released a book, "Find Your Yellow Tux," where he promotes his mantra "If it's normal, do the exact opposite”. Jesse has the most compelling message I've heard about creating an amazing experience for your clients, and how this can fuel your business. I hope this interview will inspire you, help you think differently about your practice, and help you create a practice that is more impactful and profitable. Most entrepreneurs I know enter a business looking to do what someone else does, only do it better. In the end, how much better can you do? 10%? 15%? You don't want to do what everyone else does, you'll just get lost in the crowd. Instead, do the exact opposite. The first trick is to look at what the competition is doing - then see what upsets you about it. Does it take too long to get the product? Is it tough to do? Look at every single negative aspect and find ways to make it better. Second, find a way to for people to experience something for themselves. Don't force an experience on them, just set them up for something and sit back to see if they will engage it. On this episode of The Creative Warriors, we are joined by Jesse Cole. Jesse is the Owner of Fans First Entertainment, who owns and operates the Savannah Bananas and the Gastonia Grizzlies. What can you learn from this amazing ballpark experience? Have you ever felt like the underdog in your industry, having a smaller brand that barely gets noticed?  Then we have an inspiring interview that proves you can still be the underdog while building a loyal following of customers and fans. In fact, our guest is living testimony that HUGE things do come out of small packages. Meet Jesse Cole, owner of the Savannah Bananas. What, you’ve never heard of them? Well, most people haven’t… but that’s not stopping them from breaking records with ticket and merchandise sales! The Savannah Bananas often sell out tickets to their seasonal games and have a fan base that’s engaged year-round. So how do they do it? “Baseball is long, slow and boring…but can we be the BEST experience for the fans?” –Jesse Cole Jesse has found amazing ways to build a culture around a “fans-first” mentality that lives in every corner of the organization. As a result, the team has found clever ways to neutralize the pain points typically associated with baseball. But it gets better… Those previously dull or frustrating moments are now filled with moments of delight, bringing a unique, entertaining and endearing experience to every moment of every game. Tied together with a culture of outstanding customer service and innovative ways to proactively engage fans, the internal experience of the Savannah Bananas is just as outstanding (and outrageous!) as the fan experience. In fact, due to Jesse’s innovative approach at hiring, training, and compensating them, employees are just as loyal as the fans! “In 3 years, since we started the Savannah Bananas, we’ve had zero turnover.” –Jesse Cole Would you like to build a culture and experience that turns your small business into a huge success? Then you need to listen to some of the crazy but powerful ways Jesse has knocked small business success and fandom way out of the park. [4:20] Jesse explains how a “low-level” college summer baseball team like the Savannah Bananas can outsell higher-profile events. [7:20] How does Jesse execute on the “love your customers more than you love your product” mentality? Moreover, how has he “cracked the customer code!?” [10:20] How does Jesse find and train the right people to build a culture that turns up the volume on emotional connections? [13:27] Savannah Bananas employees rock the “fans first” mentality, but what about the players? [17:40] So, which came first – the Savannah Bananas name, or Jesse’s yellow tuxedo? [19:27] What’s the #1 thing any business can learn from Jesse and the Savannah Bananas? Business Coaching with Join Up Dots

Baseball Genius Jesse Cole, Shows How He Is Changing Baseball Forever My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who is bold, crazy, inspired, committed and having the time of his life. He is the owner of two baseball teams that are quite frankly doing things a bit differently, and the world is taking note – Big Time He is the founder of Fans First Entertainment, which operates the Gastonia Grizzlies and the Savannah Bananas, and also a keynote speaker, and host of the Business Done Differently Podcast. Which is a boring way of telling you what he does, to be honest. He has taken a countries passion for baseball and turned it on its head, by creating an experience not just about what is happening (or is not happening on the pitch) but what is happening everywhere. He joined the industry in 2008 as General Manager of the Gastonia Grizzlies. It was here that he started providing a circus-like atmosphere at his ballparks. From dancing players, Grandma Beauty Pageants, and Flatulence Fun Nights to porta-john giveaways and garbage can nachos, he has tried it all The “show” worked and the Grizzlies began breaking attendance records annually. In 2014, he bought the Grizzlies and started Fans First Entertainment with his then-fiancé and Grizzlies Director of Fun, Emily. In 2015, the two of them then started a new Coastal Plain League team in Savannah, GA. It was announced on February 25, 2016 that the team would be named the Savannah Bananas. From there, the team quickly became a hit all over the country, in part thanks to coverage from national media outlets, including ESPN, CNN, and Good Morning America. Merchandise sold to all 50 states and 6 countries. In the first year, the team sold out 18 of 25 games and broke the attendance record for both Grayson Stadium and the Coastal Plain League. To top it off, the Bananas won the Coastal Plain League Championship. As he says he “I am just getting started”. His teams are continually reinventing as they look to change the baseball industry and the entertainment experience for fans. So how has he managed to stand firm against a world of conformity and create something new and exciting? And did he ever have the huge doubts that a new way should not be his way in future? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Jesse Cole Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Jesse Cole such as: How he managed to break down not only the barriers around him but also the barriers in his own mind, which allowed him to do the unthinkable What he did to grow his team, and find the right people that bought in his vision of where he wanted to head. Why Jesse can see clearly that although the timing wasnt perfect when he joined the Grizzlies, in fact it was in fact the perfect time. The truth that anyone who starts something can see. and lastly…. Why he connected with Barack Obama and offered an internship at the Baseball ground, much to the amusement of himself and his team.

Jesse Cole brought a new college summer baseball franchise to Savannah with high hopes. But people stayed away in droves. In a city with a pro ball team for 90-plus years, he had to do something very different—something bananas—to get their attention. Today, as the P.T. Barnum of Baseball, he has been a performer and showman for the past decade. His Fans First Entertainment owns and operates the Gastonia Grizzlies and Savannah Bananas. His teams have welcomed more than a million fans to their ballparks.

Doing the Opposite of Normal Can Lead to Better Customer Service Shep Hyken Interviews Jesse Cole, Author of Find Your Yellow Tux Featured Interview: Do your “fans” come first? When customers come first, success follows. Shep Hyken speaks with Jesse Cole about how to stand out from the competition and create perfect customer service experiences for your customers. Top Takeaways: • To stand out in business, do the opposite of what is normal. Do what the competition is not doing. • Three areas where you need to find your “Yellow Tux” 1. Yellow Tux yourself – Have a mirror moment. Figure out what frustrates you about your life and how you can start over. Then, figure out what you are best at and run with it. 2. Yellow Tux your business – Have the same mirror moment. Focus on the areas you are best at, and don’t force yourself to do the things you aren’t skilled in. 3. Yellow Tux your legacy – Think about the difference you make, and not just on your accomplishments. Significance over success is what you should be after. • Six steps to creating attention, standing out, and creating the perfect customer service experience: 1. Have a mirror moment – Look at where you are and where you would like to be. 2. Ask the best question – What can you and your company be the best at? 3. Embrace the different mindset – Whatever is normal, do the opposite. 4. Hello world moment – Create attention to stand out. 5. Love your customers more than you love your product. 6. Make reinvention part of your DNA – Change constantly in order to create attention.
