How do Genesis chapters 1:26-29 & 2 - affirm the work of the human? What does it mean for humans to "subdue the earth" and "have dominion" as part of their work? How should Christians balance work and rest in their lives? Dr. Sarah Maple is a distinguished theologian and painter with advanced degrees in Ethics, Comparative Religious Studies, and Theological Studies from Drew University and the Pontifical John Paul II Institute, and she completed her Ph.D. at the University of St. Andrews, with joint supervision from the University of Oxford. Messy Family Podcast : Catholic conversations on marriage and family
“Thank you, every woman, for the simple fact of being a woman! Through the insight which is so much a part of your womanhood you enrich the world's understanding and help to make human relations more honest and authentic.” ~ John Paul II, Letter to Women Summary Women have particular gifts to bring to the world which were identified by John Paul II as the “genius of women”. The Given Institute was created by religious superiors of the major orders in the United States and works with young women in all states of life to help them realize that they are gift, work to discover their unique giftedness and then make a plan to bring those gifts to the world. In this podcast, we discuss these topics with Michelle Hilleart, their Executive Director who is passionate about the need for women to know their own dignity and worth. There are so many lies and confusing messages being given to young women today and these messages are preventing them from not just being who they were created to be, but also preventing them from knowing how they were created. Listen in to hear about what REAL “girl power” is! Key Takeaways John Paul II identified the “genius of women” as receptivity, sensitivity, generosity, and maternity. Every woman is called to be a spiritual mother - whether she is a natural mother, single woman, or consecrated woman. Every woman is called and gifted and those gifts begin to grow when a woman knows who she is as a daughter of God. Once we know what those gifts are we should then create an “action plan” to bring those unique gifts to the world. Couple Discussion Questions Do I recognize my dignity as a daughter of God? What are the gifts that are uniquely mine? How can I develop those gifts and bring them to the people around me?

In this episode, Ellen discusses the virtue of patience, particularly in the context of sex, marital intimacy, and pregnancy. She explores the connection between patience and our spiritual, emotional well-being and offers practical tips to make waiting more bearable. Her key messages underline that patience is a stepping stone to holiness and is not a burden. She emphasizes the need to embrace patience and view it as an opportunity for growth and spiritual development, going so far as to associate it with joy. Toward the end of the episode, she provides some strategies for practicing patience, like seeking holy distractions and understanding the root cause of any frustration or anger associated with waiting.APPLY NOW for the 2024 GIVEN Cohort Thank you to the GIVEN Institute for sponsoring this week's episode.Did we mention a book on this week's episode? In this Say Yes to Holiness podcast 1:1 Conversation, Christina sits down with Cynthia Psencik, Mentor and Program Director for the GIVEN Institute. Cynthia and I crossed paths through my own involvement as a mentor for the GIVEN Institute, and from my first involvement, I knew that I just had to share the work of the GIVEN Institute with others, and then started looking for a time for us to connect--which we finally did! Cynthia and I spoke about her own journey, especially her own awakening as a part of the first Encuentro, and then her subsequent work in young adult and youth ministry and numerous national organizations designed to help foster an integrated life of faith, especially for Hispanic families, youth and young adults. This eventually led her to GIVEN where she now serves as the director of Mentors and Programs. The GIVEN Institute (GIVEN) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to activating the gifts of young adult women for the Catholic Church and the world. GIVEN inspires and equips the next generation of female leaders to “receive the gift that they are; realize the gifts they've been given; and respond with the gift that only they can give.” This is accomplished through leadership training, faith formation, and dedicated mentoring. The goal being to form women for mission and for life. As this goal is similar to what I do within the Say Yes to Holiness apostolate, it has been a privilege for me to be able to support GIVEN, but the conversation I had with Cynthia here just emphasizes the great joy that results when each of us does our part to help one another fully become who God created us to be. Welcome Bridget Busacker, founder of Managing Your Fertility, a one-stop shop of NFP/FA resources for women and couples. Bridget created this resource out of her own frustration in trying to find a method during marriage prep with her then-fiance (now husband!). Bridget: "It was through this experience that I presented an idea of a one-stop shop website to the GIVEN Institute and my project proposal was accepted in 2016 and the project fully launched in 2018. The vision of Managing Your Fertility is to change women's health care for the better. We want women to feel empowered by their health and learn how to chart without finding themselves overwhelmed or frustrated. We desire women to feel confident in their bodies and ultimately embark on a journey to wholeness. We exist to help women live full and whole lives, specifically through the re-integration of reproductive health into all other aspects of health and wellness. Have you ever struggled to not only see but activate your unique gifts and passions? So many women are great at identifying the gifts and potential in other people but struggle to see their own unique giftedness. Join host, Karen Doyle and guest Rachel Harkins Ullmann, director of the Given Institute USA as they explore the three themes of the Given Institute and how woman can activate their unique gifts in service of the Church, the world and those they encounter.
Women don't need a collar to lead. That's just ONE of the wisdom nuggets today's guest drops. Elise Italiano is the director of the GIVEN Institute, a non-profit aimed at activating the gifts of young adult women for the Catholic Church and the world. A former theology and bioethics teacher, Elise is on the show to chat about the necessity of women as leaders in the Church. We chat about what women bring to the table, why so many millennial women are leaving the Church, and what forces we need to combat to ensure women have a seat at the table. Enjoy!
