Beacon actors will 'cold read' work Like thousands of actors before him, from Australia to Zimbabwe, Alexander Florez will rip open a sealed manila envelope tonight (May 16) and cold read a 2010 play, White Rabbit Red Rabbit, in the backyard of his Beacon home. Two other performers will take the plunge in yards on Saturday and Sunday. The premise - some call it a gimmick - is that everyone in a confined space takes an hour-long journey akin to a one-off jazz solo. Though details have leaked, audiences and the theater community (including reporters) have kept the broad outline and most revealing moments under wraps. The playwright, Nassim Soleimanpour, includes a clause in the contract for producers: "This play is not overtly political and should not be portrayed as such. It operates on a deeper, metaphoric level, and very expressly avoids overt political comment. All media and press agents have to keep in mind that the playwright lives in Iran. We therefore ask the press to be judicious in their reportage." Florez is a math teacher who will never pass muster with the grammar police. He avoids capital letters as an act of resistance and his email tag links to "the case for lowercase" style guide on his website, which includes instructions about turning off caps on devices and in programs. "I have a lot of respect and disdain for academia," he says. "I'm impressed with education but also dismayed with the gatekeeping and barriers to entry. One way to oppress is by making complicated grammar and spelling rules the standard for everyone, even though a select few invented them." Pushback against authority is reflected in the play. According to Soleimanpour, he wrote it after he refused to serve in the Iranian military and the regime denied him a visa to leave the country. (He is now thought to live in Berlin.) The production requires props, but the playwright's website touts the lack of sets, directors and rehearsals. Studying for his practical teaching certificate at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, Florez fell in with the acting crowd (he works at the Manitou School in Philipstown). After bouncing around the Hudson Valley, he moved to Beacon in 2022 and got involved with the improv and comedy scene. White Rabbit Red Rabbit had an off-Broadway run in 2016: Nathan Lane, Whoopi Goldberg and Alan Cumming, among others, unsealed the script and got to work - for the first and last time. Playbill called it "the most-talked about (and least-talked about) new show." Beacon resident Jamie Mulligan read the script to prepare the actors, gather props and make staging suggestions. But per the legal agreement, the plot and other elements may not be divulged or discussed by anyone involved. At first, Florez figured he'd reach out to local performance venues, but Mulligan suggested staging the play at an art gallery, coffeehouse or other offbeat space. James Phillips, a theater professor at Mount Saint Mary, will read in his yard on Saturday and Twinkle Burke walks the high wire on Sunday outside the home of Hannah Brooks (with contingency plans for inclement weather). The play stems from experimental theater of the 1960s, Mulligan says, and "requires the audience and actor to encounter these subjects simultaneously, a connection that creates a level of spark that can only happen when everyone learns about this together." Broad outlines address elements of existential oppression and the role of individuals in society. "Someone told me that every play is about hope, so it places the human condition into primal conflicts, like man versus nature or man versus god," says Mulligan. That so many details have remained a secret for 15 years "speaks to the integrity of theater-makers." White Rabbit Red Rabbit will be performed by Florez at 7 p.m. at 119 Howland Ave. in Beacon, at 7 p.m., on Saturday (May 17) at 24 Willow St. by Phillips and at 3 p.m. on Sunday at 99 E. Main St. by Burke. Tickets are $10 to $32.24 at dub.sh/white-rabbit.

An Artist in Motion

Beacon designer has show at Mount Saint Mary Angela Lian can barely sit still. She doesn't stand still, either. It only seems like she's fidgety because, at age 12, competitive gymnastics caused a stress fracture in her back that reverberates through her art. An essay accompanying Lian's first solo show, Moving Making Moving: Embodied Ecologies, suggests that some of her work imbues themes like "memory loss, chronic pain and loneliness with tenderness and play." In person, the Beacon artist is cheery and upbeat. Except for the constant motion, there's no indication that she suffered a debilitating injury. The exhibit at CMA Gallery at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh occurred by happenstance. The gallery director, Christopher Neyen, read an article on a design website and contacted her. "She's a commercial graphic designer who creates in many media and lives nearby, so I thought it would be good for the students to interact with her work," he says. Lian, 25, spoke to the students about her artistic journey. She is a store designer and marketing content creator for Baggu, which makes handbags and accessories. The rest of her energy and movement is spent dancing, knitting, crocheting, drawing, creating digital collages, striking yoga poses and exploring the great outdoors. Just inside her front door is a 'zine rack. The gallery show boiled her elaborate Bachelor of Fine Arts thesis, a nearly 500-page, two-volume series, down to a teaspoon. The backgrounds of eight digital design works are lush with what resembles moss, rocks and green foliage. Seven of them feature an image of the artist, sometimes in multiples. In one work, she's surfing on a tabby. In another, she adopts a dance-like pose with arms akimbo as two leaves replace her hands. Movement is captured in several short videos that explore her identity issues as an American with a father born in China and a mother from Taiwan (the couple met in the U.S.). A breakthrough came when she discovered the May Fourth Movement in China, a post-World War I upheaval that embraced modernization while trying to preserve ancient cultural values. Lian is a fan of "scores," or slogans designed to whack the creative process. At the gallery, she hand-painted "Scores for Dreaming" in black on two white walls. Its questions include: "When was the last time you danced?" and "How can you support Mother Nature? How can Mother Nature support you?" Other statements offer a directive: "Sit in front of someone. Without interruption, start with 'I want' and share for three minutes. Switch roles and repeat." Lian has a strategy for time management. "Instead of focusing intently on one thing and getting it done, I engage in more limited but intense creativity episodes with multiple projects," she explains. "That way I can take time away from something to gain perspective. I call it slow-motion multitasking." The CMA Gallery, located on the campus of Mount Saint Mary College, 330 Powell Ave., in Newburgh, is open on weekdays. See msmc.edu/cma-gallery or email cma-gallery@msmc.edu. Moving Making Moving continues through Jan. 10. For more of Lian's work, see embodiedecologies.cargo.site.

Dr. Robert Miller, a distinguished professor and theologian, brings a profound perspective to the topic of understanding God's voice. Emphasizing the importance of setting aside dedicated time and space for prayer, Dr. Miller likens the practice to making an appointment with a doctor, advocating for an approach marked by trust and openness to divine transformation rather than an attempt to alter God's will. He underscores the significance of scriptures, particularly the gospels, as the primary medium through which God communicates with us today, encouraging thoughtful reflection to discern His voice. Dr. Miller's insights, rooted in humility and receptivity, aim to help individuals align their wills with God's, fostering a deeper, more meaningful prayer life. 00:03:37 Unveiling Biblical Symbolism in Popular Films 00:09:06 Diverse Communication Methods of God Throughout History 00:13:05 Scriptures as Primary Communication from God 00:23:09 Silent Listening: Strengthening Faith Through Prayer 00:29:11 Navigating God's Voice Amidst Prayer Distractions 00:31:58 Seeking Inner Peace Through God's Guidance 00:44:00 Listening to God's Voice Through Contemplative Prayer 00:50:37 Inviting Jesus Into Daily Moments 00:55:30 God's Superior Care for Souls Over Satan 00:59:53 Emotional Prayer Techniques for Deep Spiritual Connection 01:10:44 Engaging Communication for Future Dialogue My guest today is Dr. Robert Miller, associate professor at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York. Today we seek to understand one of the 12 disciples: John (different from John the Baptist!). Why did he follow Jesus? What was he like before Jesus? After? What did he do that allowed him to be the author of not just one book of the Bible, BUT FIVE!? If John were alive in 2023, what would he be like? Influencer? Activist? President of the United States? I wonder if me and him would be friends...To love John and know him is to understand his life's work immortalized in scripture. Hopefully, then, we can try to understand and mobilize a life following Jesus. My guest today is Dr. Robert Miller, associate professor at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York. #57: Scotty Smiley — Hope Unseen

Intentional Living and Leadership with Cal Walters

The definition of hope is “to expect with confidence,” but what do you do when you’ve lost confidence in everything? When you’ve watched your dreams go up in smoke? When you feel isolated from those you love and you start to question the God you’ve built your life around? How do you find confidence when all the things you had confidence in lay shattered all around you? Blindness became Major Scotty Smiley’s journey of supreme testing. As he lay helpless in the hospital, he resented the theft of his dreams—becoming a CEO, a Delta Force operator, or a four-star general. With his wife Tiffany’s love and the support of his family and friends, Scotty’s response became God’s transforming moment. Scotty Smiley is from from Pasco, a small city in Washington State. After high school he attended the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. After four great years, he graduated and moved to Fort Benning, Georgia and attended Infantry Officer Basic Course and Ranger School. Soon after he moved to Fort Lewis, Washington where he led a 45 man Platoon.   In 2005 while leading his Platoon in Mosul, Iraq, Scotty found himself in front of a suicide car bomb.  After the man blew himself up, shrapnel blew through Scotty’s eyes leaving him blinded and temporarily paralyzed, he woke up in Walter Reed Army Medical Center a week later. Though questioning his faith, Scotty made a decision to forgive and rebuild his life and continue to serve in the Army, becoming the first blind active-duty officer in military history. The Army Times named Scotty “Soldier of the Year” in 2007 and in 2008 he won an ESPY as the world’s Best Outdoor Athlete. After receiving a Master of Business Administration from Duke University, Scotty taught the core course in leadership at West Point and then commanded the Warrior Transition Unit at West Point’s Keller Army Medical Center. Scotty is a recipient of the Army’s prestigious MacArthur Leadership Award and holds an honorary PhD from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY.  In 2010, Scotty received a Father of the Year award in New York and in 2011 received the Christopher Award for all he has given and continues to give. Since then, Scotty attended the Maneuver Captain Career Course in Fort Benning, Georgia, and then moved to Spokane, Washington where he held a position with the Gonzaga University ROTC Department, teaching and mentoring America’s future leaders.   After many years of service, Scotty retired from the military in 2015. Over his military career Major (Retired) Smiley received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart; Combat Infantry Badge, Ranger Tab, Airborne Wings and Combat Diver Qualification Badge. He currently works with the capital markets department at Drexel Hamilton out of New York as an investment banker for corporations and banks around the world. With a passion for using his story to build hope in this world, Scotty authored Hope Unseen in 2010 and now travels all over the country speaking and sharing his message of perseverance, courage and hope. He is an avid adventurer and has completed the Coeur d’Alene Iron Man, climbed Mt Rainer, gone skydiving, surfing and is always looking for his next chance to try something new. Scotty is married to his high school sweetheart, Tiffany and the couple lives in Spokane and are the proud parents of three wonderful children.   For show notes, visit calwalters.me.

Sergeant Major Reginald Wayne Butler, U.S. Army, a native of Oklahoma, graduated from McAlester High School in 1992. He received a B.S. in business from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburg, New York in 2007; an M.B.A. in information technology management from Trident University International in Cypress, California, in 2010; and is currently pursuing a D.B.A. in leadership from Walden University, Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was raised in poverty by a single mother of five children, who had a loving heart and faced many obstacles but never complained. She blessed Butler with a warm heart, good manners, and inspired him to follow his passion and intuition. As a child, Butler had behavioral problems, a speech impediment and was fitted with leg braces. Numerous Pediatric Doctors informed his mother that he would never be able to run or overcome the fear and tension in stuttering. Kids called him names such as Frankenstein and Stutterbox until the age of 9 when he decided to overcome his challenges. Butler removed the leg braces, tossed them in a dumpster, and took off running, very much similar to Forrest Gump. By the 4th grade, Butler was the fastest kid in elementary school and later went on to win Regionals in track and field. Butler attended speech therapy throughout middle school, and he now enjoys inspiring people to overcome their obstacles and fears. In 1991, toward the end of his junior year of high school, Butler joined the Oklahoma Army National Guard as an Infantrymen. He was the only African American in a 240-man company and had to overcome adversities related to racial discrimination but maintained a positive state of mind. Butler continued to break down obstacles within the organization and sought out the presence of younger soldiers who trusted him, believed in equal opportunity, and practiced dignity and respect. Butler found the resiliency to overcome the boundaries set before him and knew after graduating from High School the military life was going to be his destiny. During his 25-year military career, Butler achieved the highest enlisted rank of Sergeant Major. He completed the rigorous U.S. Army Ranger School in 1998, which is the Army’s most rigorous course related to premier small unit tactics and leadership. In 2001, Butler accomplished the Bradley Master Gunner course, to become a trained expert on the weapon systems housed within military fighting vehicles. He values the attribute of leading from the front and ultimately gained the respect of his subordinates. Butler deployed to the Middle East, the Pacific, Europe and Continental U.S. stations. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Butler was a platoon sergeant of the Army’s First Cavalry Division from Fort Hood, Texas, when a platoon-size element was ambushed in Sadr City, Baghdad, on April 4, 2004, also known as “Black Sunday.” Eight soldiers were killed and more than 70 injured during the attack. Butler’s Humvee gunner paid the ultimate sacrifice, and 17 out of 37 soldiers in his platoon were severely wounded. Butler had the hardest hit platoon with 20 soldiers remaining in the fight. His unit remained in sustained combat for 80 consecutive days. Butler is portrayed in the National Geographic Channel’s “The Long Road Home,” an eight-part miniseries based on journalist Martha Raddatz’s 2007 book of the same title. He was mentioned on several occasions including one during which the Secretary of Defense recognized Butler in a lecture to more than 5,000 cadets and faculty members at the U.S. Military Academy in 2008 as a hero with real-world experience and wisdom in and out of the classroom. He has a passion for helping military members and people around the world to find their inner abilities to overcome daily challenges and to live a healthy, memorable and appealing lifestyle. Butler seeks to inspire, motivate and challenge audiences to lead an authentic and inspired life.

Mental toughness Encourage athletes to picture times they have been successful - Play a movie in their head Other athletes don't want to think about much - encourage them to think of something simple like 'just see it and hit it' Culture Coaching staff should answer the question - in twenty years how do you want your players to remember their experience Have kids help own the experience by incorporating them in the standards you set for your team Captains - one good method might be to have rotating gameday captains based on merit (demonstrating leadership skills) 14 Great Coaches - the book 60 timeless concepts that coaches Vince Lombardi - Had zero tolerance for any type of racial discrimination. Also believed in simplicity over complexity. Nick Bolleteri - You don't have to be a great player to be a great coach. Pat Summit - Her players changed a play she called. She self-reflected - and realized she had not analyzed who the best player for that moment was. Tom Couglin - Tom changed his coaching style - he went from trying to force his compliance to a new style of trying to listen and incorporate their feedback. He established a player council who met regularly and communicated with Tom. Joe Torre - Had a great skill for working with huge egos, and making sure they all felt their role was important no matter what it was on the team Book: /book link Parting Advice Enjoy the experience.
