What is independent about NZ's independent foreign policy? Is it myth or reality? Is it tautological? Does using the term prevent true discussion of NZ's foreign policy direction? Modi's response to a congratulatory message from Taiwan's president drew the expected protest from the PRC. Are there meanings behind these overtures? Saudi and US are ending a 50-year long agreement to price Saudi oil in US dollars and Saudi's commitment to use its oil revenues to purchase US Treasury bonds. This news barely made the headlines! What are the implications?

At the recent IOC session in Mumbai a number of IOC members called for IOC President Thomas Bach to go another term in the job. This would give Bach a further four years. The optics aren't great. It's all a bit North Korea.Jens Sejer Andersen of Play the Game wrote this: Eight-to-12-year term limits for Presidents to prevent accumulation of power are the single most important principle of governance reforms across Olympic sports. If Thomas Bach's term is extended, hundreds of sports Presidents at the national and international level will be inspired to follow suit."So, ripple effects. But did the calls for four more years arise organically or is it an idea planted by Thomas Bach's people?Bach's response was to wave away the calls for another term. Yet the idea is now out there, in the air. A conversation has begun. The Second Bounce - The Coe conundrumSuccessors to Bach are positioning themselves for election, scheduled for 2025.These include Juan Samaranch Junior, son of former President, which is another tricky optic for the IOC's comms dept to handle. And then there's Seb Coe.The problem for Coe has been conflict of interest. His ownership stake in sports marketing agency CSM is often whispered as a barrier to his elevation to the top job. A few weeks ago, that problem went away, when CSM was bought by Casey Wasserman's company. So Seb Coe no longer chairs a major sports agency. Fast forward to that IOC session, and the idea of Thomas Bach going again is mooted by fawning IOC members who owe their place in the room to, erm, Bach. If Bach goes four more years to 2029, Coe will be aged out. The Bach-Coe relationship is described as ‘frosty'. The President would prefer his legacy candidate to be Kirsty Coventry. It's all a bit Succession. So we asked two hugely experienced Olympic insiders for some guidance as to what's really going on.Michael Payne was the IOC's first marketing and broadcast rights director, from 1983 to 2004 and was awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Medal by the IOC for services to the movement. Jon Tibbs OBE is Chairman and founder of JTA, a leading international relations and communications agency specializing in the area of international sport and particularly clients linked to the Olympic Movement. Inside the art world, one of the defining narratives of the past decade has been a renewed push for gender and racial equity. Much of the attention in this realm has focused on the dramatic overrepresentation of white male artists in everything from museum collections and exhibition programs, to auction sales and gallery rosters. Overtures to correcting the imbalance have been so prevalent in trade-media headlines, institutional marketing, and day-to-day conversations that many, if not most, art professionals seem to be confident that the industry is slowly but steadily reversing generations of deeply embedded racism and sexism. But how much has the art world really rebalanced the scales? It turns out that the answer is much less than we hoped––at least if we look past the hype at the actual data. Enter the latest edition of the Burns-Halperin Report, a multipronged data-led project helmed by Charlotte Burns, the veteran art journalist, podcaster, and founder of Studio Burns, and Artnet News executive editor Julia Halperin. At the core of the Burns-Halperin Report is a one-of-a-kind database encompassing hundreds of thousands of entries painstakingly compiled from U.S. museums, global auction houses, and top commercial galleries. The data quantifies how little has changed for artists in three historically underrepresented demographics since as far back as 2002. It also leaves the rest of us facing a lot of hard questions about why the art trade at large believes it's doing so much better at neutralizing its biases than it actually is. On this week's episode, Charlotte and Julia join Artnet News Art Business Editor, Tim Schneider to walk us through the report itself, how it came together, and what it all means

Dan cannot recall a time in American history where such a weak President like Biden was counted upon to respond to such an existential threat as Russian authoritarian leader Vladimir Putin. Hosts Claire Kretzschmar and Aarón Sanz are back for another cameo-filled conversation around The Rosin Box. On a typically drama-filled performance night of George Balanchine's A Midsummer Night's Dream, the wings are like a "zoo," filled with fairies, dogs, young dancers from the School of American Ballet, a donkey-headed danseur, plenty of sparkles, and costumes fit for the ballet's "cape-ography." (44:53) Edited by Emilie Silvestri Music: "Je ne t'aime plus" by Pink Martini Courtesy of Pink Martini & Heinz Records Overture and Incidental Music to A Midsummer Night's Dream, opp. 21 and 61 (1826, 1842); Overtures to Athalie, op. 74 (1845), The Fair Melusine op. 32 (1833), The First Walpurgis Night, op. 60; Symphony No. 9 for strings; Overture to Son and Stranger, op. 89 (1829) by Felix Mendelssohn
In this special episode of See the Music recorded live at our Lincoln Center theater, NYCB Music Director Andrew Litton dives into the history of the Felix Mendelssohn score for Balanchine's enchanted ballet A Midsummer Night's Dream. Litton shares excerpts from the music—written 173 years ago, when Mendelssohn was just 17 years old—that encapsulate the young composer's prodigious talent, even in the face of religious persecution in his native Germany where the score was banned for a time, despite its charming, enduringly romantic character. (12:43) Edited by Emilie Silvestri Music: Symphony in Three Movements (1945) by Igor Stravinsky Overture and Incidental Music to A Midsummer Night's Dream, opp. 21 and 61 (1826, 1842) Overtures to Athalie, op. 74 (1845), The Fair Melusine op. 32 (1833), The First Walpurgis Night, op. 60; Symphony No. 9 for strings; Overture to Son and Stranger, op. 89 (1829) by Felix Mendelssohn All music performed by New York City Ballet Orchestra

The Friday Newsletter | Daily Gardener Community Friends of the Garden Meeting in Athens, Georgia Register Here Historical Events 1814 Birth of Charles MacKay, Scottish poet, writer, and songwriter. In The Collected Songs of Charles Mackay, Charles wrote a song about the Meadow Sweet: Rose! We love thee for thy splendor, Lily! For thy queenly grace! Violet! For thy lowly merit, Peeping from thy shady place! But mine airy, woodland fairy, Scattering odors at thy feet, No one knows thy modest beauty, No one loves thee, Meadow-Sweet! 1851 Birth of Alice Morse Earle (books by this author), American historian and author. Alice wrote two garden books: Old Time Gardens (1901) and Sun Dials and Roses of Yesterday (1902). Alice wrote, Farm children have little love for nature and are surprisingly ignorant about wildflowers save a few varieties. The child who is garden bred has a happier start in life, a greater love and knowledge of nature. On the peony, Alice wrote: [She] always looks like a well-dressed, well-shod, well-gloved girl of birth, breeding, and of equal good taste and good health; a girl who can swim, and skate, and ride, and play golf. 1902 Birth of Thomas “Tommy” Dolliver Church (books by this author), California landscape architect. Tommy pioneered the modern California Style design style. In 1955, Tommy wrote, When your garden is finished I hope it will be more beautiful than you anticipated, require less care than you expected, and have cost only a little more than you had planned. Unlike people, gardens never strive for perpetual youth—they want to look old from the day they were born. Their greatest glory comes with maturity. 1904 Birth of Cecil Day-Lewis (books by this author), Irish-born British poet. He used the pen name Nicholas Black for his mystery stories. Cecil was the Poet Laureate for four years before his death in 1972. He was also the father of actor Sir Daniel Day-Lewis. In Cecil's Overtures to Death and Other Poems (1938), In June we picked the clover, And sea-shells in July: There was no silence at the door, No word from the sky. A hand came out of August And flicked his life away: We had not time to bargain, mope, Moralize, or pray. Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Food Forest Handbook by Darrell Frey and Michelle Czolba This book came out in 2017, and the subtitle is Design and Manage a Home-Scale Perennial Polyculture Garden. Before I even get started with my review, I have to say that this book gets high praise on Amazon; it's a five-star book. The authors are passionate about growing food year-round - without fossil fuels - and increasing biodiversity on the land and wild market gardening. In the introduction to their book, Darryl and Michelle point out that the food forest is one of the oldest ways to garden. It's the edges of the forest that were the most fruitful places for both hunting and gathering. And today, food forests are making a comeback. Now you might be asking yourself, what is a food forest? Well, a food forest is simply a food-producing garden that's built around trees and perennials. I've been a passionate fan of orchards and mini orchards for the past couple of years. I'm installing one up at my cabin, planting even more trees this spring. Darryl and Michelle point out that, A well-managed food forest is an integrated system and it includes all kinds of plants, fruits, vegetables, herbs, medicinal plants, and plantings that promote beneficial insects and balanced nutrients. And in case you're starting to feel a little overwhelmed. Don't be. Because these food forests can be simple and include only a few species, or they can contain a myriad of plants. The bottom line here is that Darryl and Michelle will help you feel confident and inspired to create your own food forest, whether on a small or grand scale in your backyard, front yard, patio, or allotment. This book is 256 pages of planning, designing, and managing your very own food forest. You can get a copy of The Food Forest Handbook by Darrell Frey and Michelle Czolba and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $20. Botanic Spark 1920 Birth of Edwin George Morgan (books by this author), Scottish poet and translator associated with the Scottish Renaissance. He is remembered as one of the foremost Scottish poets of the 20th century. In 1999, Edwin became the first Glasgow Poet Laureate. In 1968, Edwin wrote, Yes, it is too cold in Scotland for flower people; in any case who would be handed a thistle? Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.
It may surprise some, but I would not have voted for these overtures at General Assembly. Nevertheless, it's also true their defeat at the presbytery level is bad news for the restoration of Biblical commitments to the denomination. Why do I say I would not have voted for Overtures 23 and 37 at General Assembly? But before answering…
