Deep corruption threatened to ruin jobs and harm lives. Intimidation, distrust, and secrecy became the norm among the executive management group of Chelan County Public Utility. Even in a small and semi-rural American government, corrupt leaders aren't simply dishonest and immoral. They're dangerous. A board of directors should hold wrongdoers accountable, but sometimes that responsibility falls to righteous employees. A riveting and relevant memoir, The Intrepid Brotherhood details a classic story of enlightened leaders' war against oppressive management when private misconduct evokes public resistance. Gordon Graham, J.D., is also a Law Enforcement Officer.Gordon's education as a Risk Manager and experience as a practicing attorney, coupled with his extensive background in law enforcement, have allowed him to rapidly become recognized as a leader in private and public sector organizations with multiple areas of expertise.Gordon proudly served the California Highway Patrol and was a motorcycle officer for his first ten years. He helped design the first DUI task force, assisted in developing the DRE (Drug Recognition Expert program), was an instructor in the initial  “Mod I and II” Haz Mat program, and wrote his first of many technical papers: “PCP–An Officer's Survival Guide.”Gordon helped provide the single greatest treatise on motorcycle safety. On the “B” shift, he and his fellow Sergeants stressed the values and beliefs and built the most productive team of motorcycle officers in the department's history. He saw deficiencies in officers' training and revolutionized law enforcement training with his SROVT program: Solid, Realistic, Ongoing, Verifiable, Training. This daily training bulletin concept resulted in his later being awarded the Governor's award for excellence in law enforcement training. He also sharpened his focus on how his education and training in systems and his legal background could work together to improve the quality of law enforcement operations by incorporating real risk management into police operations. He provides organizations, including those involved in commercial real estate, hospital operations, manufacturing companies, aerospace operations, nuclear power plants, auto racing operations, and many others. He also expanded his efforts to assist other public safety organizations in developing Fire Fighter Close Calls, now recognized as “the source” of information about firefighter safety. This effort led to his assisting the International Association of Fire Chiefs with a similar effort and developing their Fire Fighter Near Miss safety. The IAFC awarded Gordon the Presidential Award for Excellence for his lifelong work in improving firefighter safety and performance.Gordon became a founder of a company designed to standardize policy, procedure, and training in public safety operations.Today, most law enforcement agencies in California use the Lexipol Knowledge Management System, and nearly half of the states use this approach to law enforcement operations. This effort has dramatically improved the safety of police personnel while also influencing a dramatic reduction in claims, settlements, and verdicts adverse to law enforcement agencies.Gordon held his law enforcement headquarters assignment until his service retirement and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award.Graham's innovative programs, based on the values and beliefs he learned and a passion for continuous improvement, are the standard for any organization that wants to improve existing operations and prevent things from going wrong.IDEA - the International De-Escalation Association, is dedicated to Saving Lives, Reputations, & Relationships through Conflict De-Escalation & Communication Training for Teachers, Parents, and Public Safety Providers.Find more about How to Calm an Angry Person in 90 Seconds or Less Come visit us at the IDEA website (International De-Escalation Association): https://TheIdea.WorldSubscribe to our free weekly newsletter to stay up to date on the latest news and blogs about Schools, Police, Fire, Medical Services and Flight Attendants.Do you or your organization need Communication Skills and De-Escalation Training? How do you speak truth to power? Or perhaps the real leadership question is, why would you speak truth to power? For Gordon Graham the answer was always because he had the best interests of his organisation at heart. When the integrity of his employer was under threat, Gordon put himself in the firing line by approaching his CEO with feedback. What unfolded was a long saga of toxic leadership and unethical management that took a concerted and courageous effort from Gordon and his colleagues to dismantle. In his book, The Intrepid Brotherhood, Gordon provides a cautionary tale to those in power and a reminder that vigilance and responsibility should filter through every level of an organisation. It is no surprise that most respondents to Police1's second annual State of the Industry survey indicated that communication is key to being a good supervisor. Along with that, the 2,376 respondents indicated that they want law enforcement leaders who: Care about their officers; Have technical knowledge of the job; Ensure equal distribution of workload among all their officers; Acknowledge the efforts of their subordinates; Support them in doing their job. To help decipher what cops want and how law enforcement leaders can accommodate their requests, there can be no better advisor than Gordon Graham, who has been actively involved in law enforcement since 1973. Graham worked as a CHP motorcycle officer in Los Angeles for most of his first 10 years then served as a sergeant in the same office for most of his second 10 years. He spent the remainder of his career in various headquarters assignments including assistant to the general counsel, executive assist to the commissioner and commander of the office of risk management. In today's podcast I have a conversation with Gordon Graham a nationally and internationally known speaker on the topic of risk and risk management. I have heard Gordon speak several times and he is very knowledgeable and engaging. Our discussion covers a multitude of topics from Black Swan events, disaster planning and how to write procedures among many others. You can review Gordon's Reading List at the link provided. During the podcast he mentions two books in particular, Amanda Ripley's The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes - and Why and then also Michele Wucker's book, The Gray Rhino: How to Recognize and Act on the Obvious Dangers We Ignore If you want to listen to another Disaster Zone Podcast on risk, here's a link to the one I did earlier this year with Michele Wucker, Personal and Organizational Risk Management. This episode is sponsored by The Blue Cell, a by design crisis and consequence management consulting firm with a primary focus on education and training for government at all levels, non governmental agencies and private sector entities engaged in incident and emergency management activities.

As Lexipol's own Gordon Graham is wont to say, “Predictable is preventable” and that is probably true when it comes to the homicide spikes nationwide in 2020 and 2021. In a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, former Baltimore Police Department officer and professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice Peter Moskos wrote, “Civil unrest and calls for police accountability don't directly cause an increase in murders and other violence. The danger is when antipolice sentiment rises to the point where policing is seen as the primary problem to be solved rather than as an essential part of maintaining public order and safety. Onerous restrictions on the police can lead to the worst of both worlds: poorer policing and more violence…Mayors, city councils and police chiefs must accept responsibility for dramatic increases in street violence under their leadership, and they must be ready to defend the legal and necessary use of force by police.”  In this episode of Policing Matters host Jim Dudley chats with Peter, who launched the Violence Reduction Project in late 2020, about the strategies cities and communities can deploy to address the rise in violent crime.

Welcome to Many Roads In Conversation, where we look deeply at issues affecting communities within the United States. This inaugural series focuses on the roots  of anti-Asian violence. Joining us for the second episode are Peggy Nagae and Chris Ling, who talk about major civil rights cases and legislation in American history. In this episode, we will hear two voices in dialogue, talking through major cases in the Supreme Court and how legislation has affected Asian-American civil rights, including Executive Order 9066, which incarcerated Japanese Americans during World War II. In Conversation today are Peggy Nagae and Chris Ling. Both worked as attorneys and have been active in diversity, equity and inclusion work in the Oregon legal community. Peggy is the owner and principal of Peggy Nagae consulting. Chris is now a software engineer. They spoke at the Japanese American Museum of Oregon in May 2021, in front of the actual jail cell that once held lawyer and civil rights advocate Min Yasui — you'll hear a lot more about Min during their conversation. This episode was produced by Caitlin Dwyer. Our audio editing was done by Rick March, assisted by Gordon Graham. Music was composed by Corey Larkin. Our executive producer is Sankar Raman. This is our last episode of season 1, so if you've been keeping up with us all season, thank you. We're so excited to have you along for our first year of storytelling. We'll be back in October 2021 with Season 2, which starts off with a big story, a two-parter co-told by married Holocaust survivors. It's an epic story of survival and endurance. If you're in the Portland area you can listen to the series on prp.fm on two consecutive Sunday afternoons, October 3 and 10th at 4pm, or stream us asynchronously wherever you get your podcasts. This episode is produced as part of the Rise Against Hate coalition based in Portland, Oregon and made possible by a generous contribution by Anne Naito-Campbell.

Farzad Larki was born in Iran prior to the Revolution. He grew up in a comfortable middle class family, but when the Shah was overthrown, everything changed.  Between 1979 and 1996, Farzad, his parents, and his siblings all emigrated to the U.S., though each family member traveled a very different path. Farzad's journey was the longest. From Southern Iran to Portland, Oregon, Farzad's voyage spanned eleven years and six countries. He traveled by foot, donkey, car, and plane. There were many opportunities to stop along the way, but he had his sights set on the U.S. and the freedom that it represented. Many Roads to Here is a production of The Immigrant Story, in collaboration with Portland Radio Project. This episode was produced by Stephanie Vallance. Our audio editing was superbly done by Rick March, assisted by Gordon Graham. Roger Porter conducted the original interview.  Our executive producer is Sankar Raman. Many Roads to Here is expanding. We're looking for radio producers, especially those from immigrant communities and communities of color, to join our team. We're all-volunteer for now, but we've got dreams. Reza Uddin was born in the epicenter of the Burmese government's ethnic cleansing campaign against Rohingya Muslims. For the first years of his life,  Reza wasn't aware of the institutionalized discrimination against the Rohingya. And then, when Reza was in high school, the Burmese government began denying citizenship to its Rohingya population. When he graduated college, Reza's father gave him a piece of advice: leave Burma, and don't come back.  The Rohingya refugee crisis is ongoing. There are a number of groups working in the refugee camps that accept donations, including BRAC, Action Against Hunger, and the UN refugee agency.
