POPULARITY
I was recently trying to remember the first time I met S.D. (Sam) Smith, the creator of the wildly popular Green Ember books. I think it was at a homeschool conference a decade ago, back when I was working at The Colson Center. I noticed that one of the booths in the exhibit hall was crowded with kids and their parents. It was Sam's booth, and the kids were going just crazy in their enthusiasm for Sam's “rabbits with swords,” the heroic and delightful characters who are the stars of the Green Ember books. Since then, Sam's Green Ember books – plus other series that we'll talk about today – have sold more than 1.5 million books. Sam's brother Josiah is a key partner in the cottage industry that the Smiths have created, and his son – also named Josiah – is now a co-writer of the Jack Zulu books. I'm also pleased to say that Sam has become a good friend, so this conversation might get a little free-wheeling. We talk about writing the Green Ember and Jack Zulu books, a kickstarter campaign that has already raised more than $200,000 for a video game based on one of the characters in the Green Ember series, and why he has chosen to stay in West Virginia when conventional wisdom says he might have an easier time of it if he moved to Nashville, New York, or one of the other so-called “cultural centers” in the country. I think you'll find Sam's perspective both encouraging and challenging. We had this conversation via zoom. That brings to a close my conversation with S.D. (Sam) Smith. You can find out more about Sam and his work at www.sdsmith.com. By the way, since Sam and I spoke, his kickstarter campaign has significantly exceeded its $200,000 goal. Congratulations to Sam and his team on this milestone. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. I'm your host Warren Smith. Until next time, may God bless you.
SD Smith has recently announced a Green Ember video game. He joins the digital pub table to discuss this exciting new project. So strap in for a deep dive into the Green Ember video game: its origin, its design, and how families can play video games in an enriching way.
Green Ember friends, you are going to love this one! I had the absolute joy of sitting down with S. D. (Sam) Smith and Zach Franzen to chat about an epic new adventure in the Green Ember universe: Helmer in the Dragon Tomb! For years, readers (including my son Isaac) have been asking for Helmer's origin story — and now it's finally here. Not only will we get a brand-new full-length novel, but Green Ember fans can also also enjoy an action-adventure video game that brings the story to life in a whole new way! And get this: the game is designed to be family-friendly with no ads, no micro-transactions, and no creepy internet people. Just pure storytelling, adventure, and delight for our kids.In this conversation, Sam and Zach share the hospitable heart behind the project, the challenges of creating something this big, and some behind the scenes nuggets true fans of #rabbitswithswords won't want to miss. You'll hear about the creative process, the vision for the story and game, and what makes Helmer in the Dragon Tomb such a special addition to the Green Ember world we already love.Plus, there are over a dozen questions from actual kids ranging from banjos to shading techniques to mysteries and deep dives! We tried to make it rapid fire...but we had a lot to say.
John Lovell and SD Smith, author of the Green Ember series, discuss how stories shape lives and inspire courage. They explore the series' impact on John's family, its heartfelt origins, and SD Smith's new Helmer origin story and video game, backed by a Kickstarter campaign (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/storywarren/green-ember-helmer-in-the-dragon-tomb/?ref=kicktraq). The episode also covers Bill Belichick's relationship, Trump's 100 days, and listener Q&A.

“All of life is a battle against fear. We fight it on one front, and it sneaks around to our flank.”S.D. Smith's book, The Green Ember, wonderfully weaves a tale of adventure, family, friendship, betrayal and conquering fear. We meet Picket Longtreader and his sister, Heather, as they are forced to go on the run after they return home to find it on fire and their parents and baby brother missing.A wolf attack forces Heather and Picket into a cave. Thankfully in the nick of time, they are rescued by their uncle and a rabbit named Smalls who take them to Cloud Mountain. All the rabbits are working together to fight against evil forces that are trying to overtake them. Their beloved King Jupiter had been betrayed by someone in the Longtreader family so Heather and Picket do not have the red carpet rolled out for them if you know what I mean. Emma was not like the other rabbits, she was helpful and kind to the newcomers.Helmer is a big brute of a rabbit who keeps to himself. Picket wants Helmer to train him to be a fighter. Helmer calls him Ladybug. The training is tough when “Everything is a weapon.” Will the rabbit community be strong enough to get peace from their enemies? “You can choose what you believe, Shuffler (Picket's other nickname), but you can't choose what's true.”Yes, dear listeners, “Healing is on the horizon, but fire comes first. Bear the flame.” Are you ready to meet these endearing characters and join the journey?

In this episode, FPEA Chairman Suzanne Nunn speaks with S.D. Smith, author of the best-selling adventure saga, The Green Ember series, and founder of Story Warren. Sam's tales captivate readers across the globe who are hungry for new stories with an old soul. Not merely safe stories with old-school virtue and moral imagination, but stories that are bold and daring – truthful tales of light that help shape children who become dangerous. Dangerous to the darkness. You'll be encouraged by Sam's own story of finding his way to becoming the well-loved author he is today, as well as his advice to storytellers who may be hesitant to brave putting pen to paper.

Raising creative kids is a beautiful, worthwhile endeavor, but not one that is always neat and tidy! In today's episode, I've invited two of my good friends and fellow creatives—authors S. D. We discuss everything from the challenges of nurturing creativity in our families to the influence of stories on our hearts and minds. S. D. Smith is the author of the wildly popular and perennial Let the Kids Speak favorite Green Ember series and is a father to four imaginative children. Carolyn Leiloglou is the author of the middle-grade fantasy series The Restorationists and a homeschool mom to four creative kids.In this episode, you'll hear: How connecting with the wonder in our kids fuels and enhances creativityThe value of boredom (a best-kept creative secret!) In this episode I talked with my friend S.D. Smith. Sam is the author of the beloved Green Ember series. He also wrote the book Jack Zulu and the Waylanders's Key with his son, Josiah. And he most recently wrote the book Mooses with Bazookas and Other Stories Children Should Never Read. I loved this conversation with Sam. We have a lot of fun together because he is a story teller and I love stories! Here are some highlights from our talk: *The book that turned him into a reader around the age of 15 was Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. *Some of the other books that were read aloud to him by his mom and his teachers and shaped him as a storyteller were: The Chronicles of Narnia Little Women The Box Car Children God's Smuggler *As an adult, Sam has loved and re-read the Aubrey–Maturin series by Patrick O Brian. *My favorite part of our conversation was when Sam gives a message to all parents, but especially to Dads about connecting with their kids through stories: “kids just want attention and time. They want their dads so much! They're desperate for their dad's attention. So if you're a dad and you just make up a story about something you care about, it's going to be really, really fun for them. They love it when you care. They love it when you try.” *And if you can't think of your own story, take a note from my husband and re-tell movies and books to your kids. You can change the names if you want and your kids will be none the wiser. Until they grow up and watch the movie and figure it out. Then you'll all get a great laugh over it! *I love Sam's motto for life: Modesty, fidelity, and audacity. *Sam shared he's chasing joy by taking walks, which he finds to be an opportunity to pursue connection, creativity and beauty.” *You can find Sam on Instagram, on his website and in his books! Don't forget to subscribe to this podcast, and I'd be so very grateful if you leave a 5 star rating of the podcast and also a quick review. Reviews are incredibly helpful to me as a new podcaster. Thank you for listening and being part of my team. I love you guys! Greta

Happy Monday, friends! Today, we're testing out a new type of feedback episode, calling it the Real Talk Round Up. Joining us for this is Reformed Perspective's Executive Director, Mark Penninga and editor, Jon Dysktra. We're grateful for their thoughtful perspectives on these last number of episodes. Also included in this new format is the brief coverage of a certain topic (this weeks being teacher shortages) and a book review/recommendation. Be sure to let us know what you think of this style of feedback. We are always open to new ideas. Contact us via social media or email us at reformedrealtalk@gmail.com 0:00 - Intro 3:00 - Youth Culture Recap 8:40 - New Reformation Catechism on Human Sexuality Recap 13:35 - CanRC and URC Relations Recap As mentioned, If you have a voracious reader in your house, and they've already worked their way through Tolkien's the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, and Lewis' Narnia, what's next? Well, Jon Dykstra had on offer a top 10 list of fantasy books that, while not all explicitly Christian, do seem to come from a Christian worldview. 10. The Sword Bearer - by John White - written by the author when his kids request more Narnia stories. It is imitative, kids going to another world, though updated in that instead of going through a wardrobe, they enter via a TV. 9 .Wings of Dawn by Sigmund Brouwer - Thomas is a young boy seeking to win back his castle by using the technologies that might seem like magic in England, but which were in use at that time elsewhere in the world (like gunpowder, or kites). 8. Warlord of Nin - Stephen Lawhead - well written sword and knights story set in another realm. Lawhead had some clear Christian undertones to this earlier stories that get lost in this later book, so go with early Lawhead. 7. Urchin of the Riding Stars by M. L McAllister - squirrels with swords. Need I say more? 6. The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic by Jennifer Trafton - a fun romp, with all sorts of inventive ingredients including: • Piles of poison-tongued jumping turtles • A castle built on top of a mountain that rises and falls once each day. • A tyrant twelve-year-old pepper-hoarding king 5 Brave Ollie Possum by Ethan Nicolle - the author is one of the guys behind Babylon Bee. A kid who is scared of everything can't get his parents to believe him that there is something on the roof outside his window. But he's right. Kind of a terrifying premise, but the comic hijinks soon take over, with the scared boy getting turned into a possum, a creature that faints whenever it is scared. 4. Dawn of Wonder by Jonathan Renshaw - a nephew made me and most of our church read it. And no one has regretted doing so. Only downside is that book 2 has been more than 5 years in the waiting. 3. The Green Ember by S.D. Smith - rabbits with swords. 'Nuff said. 2. Bark of the bog owl by Jonathon Rogers - loosely and hilariously riffing off the story of David and Saul. But in the American South, if it had castles. It's been described as a Mark Twain crossed with C.S. Lewis. 1. On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness by Andrew Peterson - sat on shelf how can person so go at music really also be good at writing too? What are the odds? But this is fantastic, rating right up there with Lewis and Tolkien. Three children contending with the Fangs of Dang, Lizard Creatures that have conquered the land of Skree, and their ruler Gnag the nameless. A BIG THANKS TO OUR OFFICIAL SPONSOR, TRIVAN! School librarian Tricia Fraser shares how educators and parents can foster a love of reading in their children. Don't miss her book suggestions for all ages! Click to read the article by Tricia “When we slow down and read a book, it gives us an opportunity to think about things deeply and to use our imaginations.” “When kids have a choice of what to read, it helps them discover more of what they like.” “We want to be modeling a love of books, we want to be sharing books with them, because the goal is to have them have their own motivation to read that's internal.” “The single biggest thing that anybody - teachers and parents - can do to help kids learn to love to read is to read to them.” Battle of the Books Sources for finding books: Redeemed Reader, Read-Aloud Revival, WORLD Magazine, Triple Crown Awards, The Tome Society, Shadow Mountain Tricia's recent read: Within These Lines by Stephanie Morrill Keane's recent reads: Sam and Dave Dig a Hole by Mac Barnett and Bo the Brave by Bethan Woollvin Christian authors with undertones of Christian worldview: Books by N. D. Wilson, The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson, The Green Ember series by S. D. Smith Book Suggestions from Tricia: Kindergarten-Grade 2: Tales That Tell the Truth by Various Authors: Bible story picture books, all illustrated by Catalina Echeverri. Hanna's Cold Winter by Trish Marx: This is a story of trying to keep the hippos in the Budapest zoo fed all winter during WWII, based on a true story. Mars Needs Moms! by Berkeley Breathed: I read this story at Easter as a new way of illustrating Jesus' sacrificial love for us, comparing our relationship with Him to the relationship of the little boy in the story with his mom. Grades 3-5 The Penderwicks Series by Jeanne Birdsall: These are adventure-filled friendship stories with a lot of heart. Inkling by Kenneth Oppel: An inkblot comes to life and the son of a famous artist has to decide whether or not to let the inkblot do his art project for him. Adventure and peril ensue. The Dead Sea Squirrels series by Mike Nawrocki: Some Bible-era squirrels are found in the Dead Sea caverns and come back to life in the modern United States. This leads to adventures, along with lessons that the squirrels picked up from a certain preacher they heard near the Sea of Galilee. Grades 6-8 The Invisible Boy by Alyssa Hollingsworth: Modern-day slavery hiding under our noses is addressed well, for middle school audiences. The Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan: Adventure, bows & arrows, good guys vs. bad guys, what's not to love? Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk: This beautifully written historical fiction is set in Appalachia during WWII. It deals with racism and one young girl's response to injustice in her community. Teens Deleted by Ruth Mitchell: What if our iphones were glasses, connected directly into our brains through our ears? And then what if someone figured out how to hack our brains and delete memories? The concept is so interesting, with a lot of peril, combined with just a touch of philosophy. You Bring the Distant Near and Forward Me Back to You by Mitali Perkins: Perkins deals with issues of immigration, race, abuse, human trafficking, and other difficult issues, without shying away from the hard stuff, but also not too graphic for students middle school and up. Ultraviolet by R. J. Anderson: A sixteen year old wakes up in a mental institution and tries to figure out if her memories are true. Is she mentally ill? Or is something else going on? This book has a lot of twists and turns that I really enjoyed. S. D. Smith brings us into his popular Green Ember fantasy world of tiny creatures who find big adventure.
POW! WHAM! The hero slugs the bad guy. Unconscious henchmen lay sprawled everywhere. The city is saved! All in a day's work for an average action-adventure protagonist. BUT--is there another way? Why do we enjoy violent endings and are there satisfying nonviolent resolution to such stories? Hosts Timothy Deal and Nick Hayden wrestle (politely discuss) these questions and more in this episode's Story School. Then, after Once Upon a Sentence (listen in to find out!), we tackle (politely discuss) Great Expectations, The Tombs of Atuan, The Green Ember, and more in our annual Book Club Book Review in Our Take On Tales. So, whether you prefer anime-level pugilism or long heart-felt soul-bearing for your endings, you're sure to enjoy this 125th episode of your premiere podcast about storytelling for the creator and the consumer, Derailed Trains of Thought! How do you help kids think through the things they'll see and hear? What should our practice be around smart phones? Vulnerable. Brave. Inspiring. Those are just a few words of many I could use to describe Raquel McCloud. Beginning with the day she was born, this woman was not dealt an easy hand of cards. But, just like the story line from so many of her favorite books and movies, she was able to rise above her circumstances and create a beautiful life out of the hard and the messy. And not only that, but she is using the things she has been through and many of the things she is still dealing with to help inspire and teach and encourage others. I'm so thankful that she is willing to share the things she is struggling with and working on so that we can all benefit from it! Last week, Raquel came on the show and shared Part 1 of her Lifetime Original story. That story included some childhood trauma and abuse, experiences with adoption and emancipation, and a romance that began in none other than Taco Bell. Today, we're continuing that story and hearing about what her family dynamic looks like now. She's also sharing on the stereotypes of birth moms, rights that birth moms should have, and how we can all be better advocates for such an underprivileged group of women. Adoption and birth stories aren't the only thing Raquel likes to share about, though. She also gets super vulnerable online sharing about mental health struggles, body positivity and self love, parenting, marriage, and many other hard but beautiful things that we can all relate to! Over the course of her online growth, Raquel has had to endure a lot of critics. But as she would tell you, it's worth it to reach those who she knows can relate to her struggles. Those who have felt isolated and alone for so long and didn't know there was anyone else out there who understood how they felt. She has found purpose in her pain and in her journey and isn't going to let a few online haters stop her from sharing it! Why re-read? This is a question we get a lot at RAR, and I'm not going to beat around the bush...I'm convinced there is a lot to gain from rereading. Today, I'm going to tell you why. If you have a child who re-reads the same book over and over, we're going to talk about it. And if you or someone you love has recently read the same picture book to a little one every night for months, I've got some good news for you. In this episode, you'll hear: why re-reading may just be the very best kind of readingwhat's to gain from re-reading?how our kids benefit from revisiting their favorite books (and the rewards are huge!) Click the play button below: Listener Guide Use the time stamps below to skip to any part of the podcast: 1:45How often do you rewatch your favorite movie?4:37Knowledge and vocabulary6:21Reading comprehension7:57Reading for plot11:20How we change14:30 Kate DiCamillo and Charlotte's Web15:59 A challenge for you17:04How to log re-reading18:58Let the kids speak What's the deal with re-reading? Consider: how often do you re-watch your favorite movie or re-listen to a favorite album, a favorite song? I asked this question on Facebook, and the responses surprised me. "10 times" was one of the lower responses. And I could not believe how many people said "over 100 times". Nobody even thought it was a weird question. We expect to revisit our favorite stories again and again. So what's the deal with revisiting our favorite stories, movies, songs, and books? There's more here than meets the eye, so let's dig in. Reward #1: Books become lifelong companions I bet we can all agree on this: we want books to become some of our children's lifelong companions. I want my kids to see the Laura Ingalls Wilder books or The Chronicles of Narnia or S.D. Smith's Green Ember books on a bookshelf 20 years from now and feel like they're bumping into old friends. I want them to remember who they are and remember where they came from when they see those book covers. But friendship isn't instantaneous. Friendship takes time. You wouldn't feel like someone you had a single conversation with at a coffee shop was one of your closest friends or life companions, right? Relationships with books and with book characters take time as well. If we want books to become our children's lifelong companions, then they need to spend some quality time with those characters and those stories. They do that by re-reading. Reward #2: Better retention of knowledge & vocabulary A recent study found that children are more likely to retain knowledge of new vocabulary if they're exposed to words through repeatedly reading the same book than if they're encountering those new words in different books. New knowledge and better vocabulary are two academic gains all kids get from reading, even on a first-go-round. Re-read that book, and the retention of vocabulary goes up. This is really good news for anyone with kids who like the same book to be read over and over and over again. Pro Tip: Generally speaking, you'll find the best, most beautiful language in picture books. Picture books tend to be crammed with beautiful language (yes, even more than novels), so when in doubt, grab a picture book and read it as many times as your kids will listen! Reward #3: Improved fluency & comprehension What we really mean by fluency is this: how accurately your child can read a text with the correct expression while also understanding what he/she is reading. This is probably obvious, but the more often you read a picture book, the better you get at reading aloud that picture book. You know this is true. If you've read a picture book a number of times, you know where to slow down, where to speed up, where to pause. It's familiar territory. It's like walking a well-worn path instead of blazing a new trail.

In this week's episode, the sisters are joined by S.D. and Gina Smith - a homeschooling couple that shares their experience balancing life with homeschooling and working from home. Sam is the author of the hugely popular Green Ember series of books, but he's quick to point out that the characters he's created wouldn't be widely known if it wasn't for Gina, his wife of 18 years who homeschools their 4 kids. The Smiths talk candidly about avoiding interruptions when Dad works from home, respecting homeschooling as a vocation and even ideas for getting Dad on board if he's resistant to the idea of homeschooling. Plus, Sam shares a little about his newest book, The Wreck and Rise of Whitson Mariner, available Dec. 3. You won't want to miss this episode, and the sisters think it's a perfect one to share with all the non-primary homeschool parents out there. You might know S.D. Smith as the author of the Green Ember series of books. He also happens to be hilarious - which makes this episode so much fun! At all five Great Homeschool Conventions in 2018, Sarah Mackenzie interviewed S.D. Smith live on stage. At one point, he flipped the whole thing on its head and interviewed Sarah. Hilarity ensued, and somehow they even managed to have a bit of serious conversation. Plus a secret is revealed: Did you know that S.D. named a character in his books after Sarah? You get to hear the whole thing on today's episode of the Read-Aloud Revival podcast. You'll hear: what it really means to write for childrenwhy the Read-Aloud Revival changed the name of its taglinewhat happened when Sarah met her "other favorite author" (scroll down for the photo that goes with that story!) If you read nothing else to your kids this year, read The Green Ember. This is a book that will steep your family's imagination in the good, true, and beautiful. The characters encounter tremendous difficulty and face them with indomitable courage. You will laugh, cry, and find your heart racing. You will wonder if you could possibly live up to the nobility and fortitude Heather and Picket. You will, in short, fall down a rabbit hole. :) I stumbled across The Green Ember during some random late night clicking and had no idea I had found such a treasure. After reading it with my kids, I started shouting about it from the rooftops and wrote to the author, asking if he'd please-pretty-please come on the podcast. Guess what? He said yes.
