The WV-based company releases its new color for 2025…West Virginia University debuts a program to help students with tuition and fees…and a restaurant opening in Fairlea serves up feel-good food…on today's daily304.   #1 – From WOWK-TV – West Virginia-based company Fiesta Dinnerware has announced its new color for 2025.  The cream-colored Linen is meant to celebrate the craft of pottery. Company officials describe it as contemporary, elegant and versatile.  Limited items in Linen are now available to purchase from Fiesta's Factory Direct website . Last year, the limited items for the 2024 color, Sky, sold out quickly, so those interested in purchasing limited items for 2025 should act fast. The rest of the Linen collection will be available starting April 28. The company, now known as the Fiesta Tableware Company, has operated in West Virginia since 1907, following trends of color and introducing new styles of the collectible dishes each year. The WVU Guarantee program will be open for resident undergraduate students within the university's system who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have a family-adjusted gross income of $65,000 or less. University officials said the program will combine with other financial aid to break down barriers for higher education. Students who complete the FAFSA by Aug. 1 will be evaluated for eligibility. Coco's will be the place you can eat after a good workout and go home feeling good, according to owner Abby Bashlor. She says everything will be made in house or bought locally. Named in honor of her miniature schnauzer, Coco's will offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner five days a week. Breakfast items will include burritos, egg bakes, sandwiches, quiches, and muffins. Lunch and dinner items will include sandwiches, soups, specials, and baked goods. Plus, a smoothie station will include fresh fruits and add-ons such as protein and collagen.  Coco's is located inside Nova Jiu Jitsu, a growing athletic academy for kids and adults in the Greenbrier Valley. In fact, the scenic Greenbrier Valley was among the early large-scale resort communities in the U.S. and featured a state-supported road system designed to lead travelers from resort to resort. Though colonial farmers were the region's first inhabitants in the 1700s, by the early 1800s, the area had become a tourist destination, according to David Sibray, the publisher of West Virginia Explorer Magazine and a real estate agent marketing historic properties in the region. As early as the 1740s, George Washington and his family were visiting the “warm springs” at Bath, now better known as Berkeley Springs. By the turn of the 19th century, resorts were being established at points as far-flung as Mineral Wells near the Ohio River. The pleasant climate and promise of healing attracted thousands of visitors to the Greenbrier Valley in the warm months, where mineral springs were perhaps more common or better marketed. “Aside from the presence of these old resorts at such places as Blue Sulphur Springs, White Sulphur Springs, Red Sulphur Springs, and Salt Sulphur Springs, there remains a network of roads that led among these destinations,” Sibray said. Marshall's film degree program creates opportunities for a Fairmont resident as the city pitches in on her capstone project…Cool off at the new splash pad at Twin Falls Resort…and Barnwood Living offers chic tiny cabins for rent in Almost Heaven…on today's daily304. #1 – From TIMES WV –  Firefighters from the Fairmont Fire Department waited for their cue outside the Marion County Courthouse. On Trinity Rollins' orders, they unleashed a jet of water into the air and the droplets splashed down on students from Shawna Santee's 5th Street Center for Dance. Rollins, 21, used the power of movie magic to recreate one of her younger experiences in Fairmont. Her professor told students to write what they know. So Rollins wrote about one memorable performance from 2021 when her dance class performed in the rain after a city parade was canceled.  The short film, “It's Only a Parade,” was part of Rollins' capstone project at Marshall University in which she had to pitch, plan and script a film project. Rollins put her production together at the same time more opportunities for video and film production are beginning to pop up in West Virginia. Tax incentives for film production have returned at the state level. At the same time, Marshall launched the state's first bachelor's degree program in filmmaking in the fall. Splash park users can also enjoy a lounge area and a small refreshment and retail area that sells a variety of frozen treats, drinks, snacks, logo apparel and beach towels. The splash pad was part of a $4 million bond project that included rebuilding the Twin Falls Resort Pro Shop, which opened in the spring of 2023. Additional ongoing projects at Twin Falls include adding a climbing wall and relocating the parks' nature center. The Falls Trail is also receiving a boardwalk and trail enhancements. His latest project is the perfect combination of old materials used in a new style–log cabin tiny homes. “We get at least 500 people from out of state that come to the store every month,” Bowe says. Now those visitors can stay in a cabin Bowe and the builders constructed just for them. Over the last year and a half, he and the crew have been hard at work building tiny cabins behind their store. The Spa City Cottage and the Big Draft Timberframe are available for rent via Airbnb. And the Dry Creek Cabin will be ready for visitors this fall. The cabins are equipped with modern amenities and make a great place to stay for visitors exploring the Greenbrier Valley. Kaymoor, founded in 1899 by the Low Moor Iron Company, was one of the many coal towns that lined the New River Gorge and was the last operating mine in the Gorge before it shut down in 1961. Kaymoor featured an extensive mining operation, multiple homes, a company store, schools, churches, and even a movie theater. Now, the former town of Kaymoor serves as a destination for hikers and explorers alike. The Kaymoor Miners Trailhead descends down the steep and rugged gorge, where hikers can view remnants of the mining operation, including buildings and equipment. From there a set of 821 wooden steps leads to Kaymoor Bottom, the site of the once prosperous mining town.  If you plan on hiking the trail, take plenty of water and stop for a break if you need to. But it wasn't until he moved to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, that he began hearing the friendly “beep beep” greetings honk. “It's much different from D.C.,” Phillips says of the tiny burg (population: 2,198). For starters, there are no skyscrapers—just soaring mountain peaks. Southern hospitality runs deep in White Sulphur Springs. But that's not why Phillips traded his metropolitan existence for a decidedly rural one. Instead, he owes his move to Ascend West Virginia. A collaborative endeavor between West Virginia University and the West Virginia Department of Tourism, Ascend seeks to boost local tax revenues by offering $12,000 in cash, plus other benefits, to telecommuters who relocate to one of five areas in West Virginia: Morgantown, Greenbrier Valley, Eastern Panhandle, Greater Elkins and the New River Gorge. The former plant was taken over by West Virginia University and WVU Medicine on April 1 after Mylan-Viatris merged with Pfizer's Upjohn and the plant's production line was moved to India. In the 18 months since the two entities have taken ownership of the facility, they have found four full-time tenants and have 12 signed leases. The Innovation Corporation also has plans to open a new diploma-based nursing program that would provide students with classes needed to become board-certified registered nurses. Making use of the piece of equipment is the father and daughters team of Past Respects, a company based in Spencer, working on the bricks on the front of the building. Frank Unger and his daughters, Savannah and Marleigh, have spent several weeks this summer “repointing” the bricks of the historic hotel. Part of that work has involved using the large lift to reach the upper floors. “It has been enjoyable,” Savannah Unger said. “I always enjoy it when we work together as a family. Elkins is a really pretty area too, so just the drive up here is nice. The project in general was a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be. It is a huge building.” Along with the front of the building, the group also worked on the chimneys on the hotel. Their goal has been to complete one floor a week and currently they have the third through the sixth floor completed. Both sisters -- college students who began working with their father at a young age -- encouraged girls to take a look at all types of work. “To all the young girls out there, you can be a lift operator too,” Marleigh Unger said. Since the tours' reopening in July, they have been in high demand, with dates fully booked through the beginning of September. Stacy Lewis, the Tygart Dam resource manager, emphasized the importance of offering these tours to the public. “I think that it's good for them to understand the mission that the USACE [U.S. Army Corps of Engineers] has, along with the state park and kind of why we're here and why Tygart Lake is here because of the dam,” Lewis said. “It's a big part of our community, so it's good that we're able to get people back in there and take them on a tour.” The tours are free and last about an hour and a half. They begin at the top of the dam and continue down and through it. The mill, which served as a grist mill and lumber mill, was restored by the Monongalia County Historical Society, which sponsors tours of the building on the last Sunday of June, July, August, and September. An expert engineer demonstrates the mill machinery on the guided, free, half-hour tours.  Dick Walters, president of the Historical Society, said members worked to renovate the mill that last operated in 1970. “You can now observe the mill engine turn wheels and connecting belts, which power the grist stone, corn crusher, roller mills, and elevators that carry the product from floor to floor during grinding and processing,” Walters said. Construction on the mill began in 1864 and was completed in 1867. Big Draft Brewing is helping to bring small town West Virginia back to life Big Draft Brewing is located in the tiny town of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.  Population 3,000, give or take. The town, and the larger Greenbrier Valley community, has faced some hard times in recent years.  The opioid epidemic chipped away at the community and the "1,000 year flood" of 2016 caused widespread destruction and loss of life. Our show this week is as much about the tenacity of the residents of White Sulphur Springs as it is about beer.  You'll have to humor me, this one is kind of personal.  My family is from White Sulphur Springs and I spent some of my childhood Summers there.  It's a close community with strong family ties.  Turns out, by complete chance, my family ties run right to Big Draft Brewing.  It's quite a story so make sure to listen in to hear the full scoop. Founders David Bostic, Clay Elkins, and JW Groseclose join us on the show this week to talk about their brewery and the overall revitalization of their town.  They've built up a city block with Big Draft Brewing, a BBQ spot, a cafe and coffee house, and a concert hall and events venue.  They intend to grow it as as destination that reaches far beyond the city line. But we do talk about beer plenty as well.  JW is the brewmaster and his goal is to make classic and approachable beers that everyone can enjoy.  We sampled the Foreman American Lager, Sudsy's Pale Ale, Bo Red Bohemian Red, and the seasonal Festbier and can vouch for all of them.  There are barrel-aged beers in the works, a saison in the fermenters, and some mad scientist brew utilizing ramps (the wild vegetable) in the works. In addition to tasty beer and BBQ the crew tells us about the fishing, hunting, hiking, and off-roading adventures in the area.  Sounds like a great time all around.  I better get on those country roads now. Side note.... you may not know White Sulphur Springs by name but you may have heard of The Greenbrier Resort.  It's got quite a story, you should check it out.  If you're a gamer and a fan of Fallout 76, you might recognize the Greenbrier as The Whitespring Resort.
