Scott and Tammra Smith built a farm on 44 acres of land in Scott Depot, where they raise a variety of animals including miniature horses and donkeys, goats, sheep and even a barn cat. As their menagerie grew, they decided to use the farm as an outreach to the community. Farm tours and field trips include closeup interactions with the farm animals, hay rides, and even information on the Battle of Scary Creek, which was fought on part of the property. Though colonial farmers were the region's first inhabitants in the 1700s, by the early 1800s, the area had become a tourist destination, according to David Sibray, the publisher of West Virginia Explorer Magazine and a real estate agent marketing historic properties in the region. As early as the 1740s, George Washington and his family were visiting the “warm springs” at Bath, now better known as Berkeley Springs. By the turn of the 19th century, resorts were being established at points as far-flung as Mineral Wells near the Ohio River. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Sunday, April 9  Completion of a stream restoration project means more fishing opportunities at Kanawha State Forest…WVDOH crews have been busy clearing enough tree canopy to stretch from Charleston to Myrtle Beach …WV native Homer Hickam hopes more Coalwood stories are coming to the screen…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – A stream restoration project designed to improve fishing and recreation at Kanawha State Forest has been completed. Started in 2020, the project was a significant undertaking and included the removal of the Davis Creek Dam, which was built in the 1930s. Structures were added to stabilize stream banks and provide additional aquatic habitat and fishing opportunities. By removing a pond, the length of fishable water has been increased from about 1,000 feet to more than one mile. These changes create pool habitat and will allow the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources to begin stocking trout. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection's In-Lieu Fee Program funded the restoration efforts at an estimated cost of $1 million. "This project is one more example of the work we're doing to restore streams to their natural state while also providing additional opportunities for anglers to enjoy. We're thrilled to see this type of investment in our natural resources and are proud to partner with the WVDEP and Kanawha State Forest to make it happen,” WVDNR Director Brett McMillion said. Lisa Goich shares the story of being able to spend 14 days with her mother before she passed away and how she learned to process grief. Episode Discussion PointsLoved ones and others come as death draws near to usher loved ones to the other side. Why it is important to keep talking about loved ones after they pass—especially their funny stories. Processing death (especially when it is unexpected) takes time. Live life and tell people how much you love them! You never know how many lives you touch. How using a journal (whether it be Lisa's guided grief journal or a blank spiral notebook) can be a place to write down your thoughts or what you want to tell your loved one who has passed. Or you can talk to them as if they are in the room. Everyone goes through grief differently. Don't carry around guilt or “I should've called, visited, etc.” That won't help you. Put yourself in their shoes and choose to live life happily—because that is what they would want for you. Why it's okay to feel okay again after a loved one passes. Embrace wherever you are today in your grief journey. Grief is often like the game Chutes and Ladders. Have a list of friends names and phone numbers to call when you are struggling.
