(mg)

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 6, 2024 is: a cappella ah-kuh-PEL-uh adverb or adjective When a song is performed a cappella, it is sung unaccompanied by instrumental music. // A hush fell over the audience as a voice from offstage began singing a cappella. // Several a cappella groups are slated to perform during the celebration. See the entry > Examples: "In a video posted to Twitter ... H.E.R. delivers a hauntingly beautiful cover of Coldplay's classic 'Fix You,' which peaked at No. 59 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2005. Backed by four of her background singers, H.E.R. belts out the 2005 hit completely a cappella." — Kyle Denis, Billboard, 14 July 2022 Did you know? A cappella arrived in English in the 18th century via the Italian phrase a cappella, meaning "in chapel or choir style." (Medieval Latin capella, meaning "chapel," is the source of English chapel.) The a cappella style reached preeminence in the late 16th century in the music that composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina wrote for the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican. Because no independent instrumental parts were written down, scholars once thought that the choir sang unaccompanied, but current evidence makes clear that an organ or other instruments doubled some or several of the vocal parts. Regardless, today a cappella describes a purely vocal performance.

In this episode of On Mission, Kate Fowler, Chris Pierno, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. are joined by Emily Lomnitzer, a professional vocalist and diocesan youth choir director, to discuss the role of Sacred Music in Liturgy and personal prayer.Sacred music, or religious music, is music that is set apart from daily use and is used in the various rites and liturgies in the Church, such as Mass. It has been used in the Church's liturgical celebration for centuries. It is an integral part of the worship and sacrifice taken place during the Mass. It has been said, "he who sings, prays twice." Some examples of sacred music may include: the Ave Maria, the Magnificat, Te Deum, the Gloria, Salve Regina, among others. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina is a famous composer of sacred music from the late Renaissance period and the Missa Papae Marcelli is one of his most renowned pieces.Read Catholic Apostolate Center Blogs about music. Kathryn Parker & Olivia Lloyd are owners of The Veiled Mirror, an online store of antique jewelry & curiosities with a penchant for the romantic, dark and macabre based out of Richmond, Virginia. To start this tour of Victorian culture [1837-1901], we begin with a crafting fad, ornate floral wreaths made of human hair. From there we touch on mourning etiquette; the comical paraphernalia of secret society initiations; The Aesthetic Movement; showing off with a pineapple; & the accessories of women's fashion as eccentric as live insects. Switching to the personal, the ladies share a handful of haunting anecdotes; one about researching a man's calling card found in a bin of 1920's clothing; another about unwittingly removing a "witch bottle" from an abandoned farm house. We end on further memories of urban exploration. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Grzegorz Wielki, Jan Sebastian Bach… trzej mężczyźni jedna muza. Muzyka!!!

Compline by Candlelight provides peace and stillness as one week ends and another begins. Set in the tranquility of St. Paul's Chapel, one of the oldest buildings in New York City, guests find a seat and hold a candle, while 30 minutes of mantra-like, chant-based improvised music by The Choir of Trinity Wall Street fill the space. There's nothing to do but listen. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina – Sicut cervus
Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c. 1525 – 2 February 1594) was an Italian Renaissance composer of sacred music and the best-known 16th-century representative of the Roman School of musical composition. He had a long-lasting influence on the development of church and secular music in Europe, especially on the development of counterpoint, and his work is considered the culmination of Renaissance polyphony.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Palestrina: Missa Papae Marcelli (classicalsavings.com)Your purchase helps to support our show! In Part II of their discussion Stephen Blackwood and Alexander Stoddart speak about the transhistorical community of past, present, and future. Stoddart explicates his Schopenhauerian view of art as life-denying and thus paradoxically able to help us relinquish our own will to power. He contrasts this view with that of a shallow presentism, a self-absorbed modernist outlook that views the present as inherently superior to both past and future, cutting off its own vital resources and neglecting its fundamental obligations. Stoddart shows another way.
