Sinner Saint: a Surprising Primer to the Christian Life

Our friend, Pastor Luke Kjolhaug just released a book that we are so excited about. Since we live within driving distance from him, we attended his book launch in Alexandria, MN, at Cherry Street Books, and recorded a podcast before the audience there. (There's a bit of background noise at the beginning, but the conversation is so worth it!) The topic of Sinner/Saint is at it's root, a conversation on sanctification, and what it means for a Christian to struggle with sin. This doctrine impacts how we view ourselves, how we view others, and ulitimately, how we view God. Though this topic is often discussed in academic circles. After all "The Simul" which it's called, is shorthand said in Latin, which is translated "Simultaneously Sinner and Saint." However, Luke takes a very pastoral tone with this doctrine, and makes it applicable to everyday life. He isn't writing about some philisophical theory, but puts heart and reality into this doctrine, rooted in scripture, and delivering peace. Those who have been justified through faith in Christ are being sanctified, but still have the remnants of sinful corruption in their flesh until they are glorified. In Romans 7:13-25, Paul details his experience of the Christian life to teach the Romans and all Christians to endure the struggle for sanctification, knowing that the outcome is secure because God has accomplished deliverance of the most wretched of sinners from their body of death through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Bruce wraps up his epic 6 part series on knowledge and the 'two sources hypothesis' (i.e. Deutsch's theory that all 'knowledge' comes from only two sources: Biological evolution and human minds). What happens if we take all the non-two sources examples of 'adapted information that cause itself to remain so' (e.g. the walking robot, the immune system, trade secrets, animal learning, animal memes, etc.) and give them their own theory distinct from the theory of 'knowledge'? Sort of like a theory of "a simulacrum of knowledge" (to uses Deutsch's own term) or "Simul-Knowledge" for short. This turns out to be remarkably easy: you just take the constructor theory of knowledge without any implicit additional criteria. Doing this has immediate profound implications that impact how we see and understand Deutsch's theory of knowledge. Like to a version of the drawing Bruce refers to throughout the episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/four-strands/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/four-strands/support

The transition to his leadership comes after a turbulent period for the Rad Onc board. Communication around the 2018 score anomalies dragged trainee confidence in the ABR to new lows and, soon after, COVID forced the board to complete a rapid redesign of testing.  More than 5 years later, there are exciting signals of change. Today's story is about what can happen when these pillars start to fall apart. When the ego takes over confidence….and when communication fails to keep everyone on the same page. That is when you find yourself in over your head, unable to retreat, and unable to move forward…at 14000 ft. Today we sit down with Ethan Morris and Evan Geller. Pastor Taylor Shippy - 1 John 1:5-2:2 Martin Luther once spoke of Christians as being "simul justus et peccator," Latin for “at once justified and a sinner” or “simultaneously saint and sinner.” This is not a description of who we are before God; rather, Luther believed it was a description of the ‘both/and' reality that characterizes the nominal Christian experience day-in and day-out. He believed that saints are 'forgiven sinners;' however, on this side of heaven, inside each of us, throughout our lives, is a sort-of tug-of-war between our old sin nature that is being steadily extinguished and our new self that is budding... This morning, we look what it means to be saints while simultaneously sinners. How do we respond to sins in our lives? I believe John invites us to confess.
