SPECIAL GUEST Susan Luz, BSN, MPH, RN graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in Nursing. After a clinical rotation at Rhode Island's Institute of Mental Health and public health experiences, she joined the Peace Corps, with her first assignment in Brazil. After leaving the Peace Corps, Luz earned her master's degree in public health nursing from Boston University. As many of you know, though I was born in the United States, my family is from Jamaica. This week Jamaica was hit by Hurricane Melissa--a Category 5 hurricane and the most severe to ever hit the island. I know in my heart that Jamaica is resilient and will rise from this tragedy, however, they cannot do it alone. Please consider making a financial contribution to the relief and recovery efforts in Jamaica. Hurricane Melissa – Jamaica Relief Organizations **UPDATED**We received updated information from my cousin this morning 10/30. He is a former member of Parliament and someone I trust implicitly. His message is as follows:"For persons who have been asking where they can donate, this is an official site accepting donations. Thank you in advance
Arlan Fuller, Project HOPE's director of Emergency Preparedness and Response, talks about the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica and other countries, as listeners report what they're hearing from friends and family in the area.

The CEO of Gaza aid group Project Hope tells Newshour there is ‘no justification' for the killing of civilians seeking medical care, after an Israeli strike killed 15 Palestinians, including ‘at least 8 children', waiting outside its clinic in central Gaza. The IDF said it had been targeting a Hamas fighter who took part in the October 7th attack. America stands at a crossroads in our battle against addiction, facing the deadliest drug crisis in our nation's history. With over 100,000 overdose deaths annually, the devastation is undeniable—but so are the solutions. In this special episode, you'll get an exclusive first look into Kevin's groundbreaking new book, One Nation Under the Influence.Kevin reveals how proven prevention strategies could slash regular drug use by two-thirds and highlights innovative criminal justice programs like Hawaii's Project HOPE, which has successfully reduced methamphetamine use by 70%. He explores lessons from America's dramatic reduction in cigarette smoking and Portugal's compassionate yet accountable drug policy, illustrating how strategic public policies, social shifts, and accountability can transform addiction outcomes. This episode tackles the harmful false dichotomies holding back progress—treatment vs. harm reduction, criminalization vs. legalization, moral failing vs. medical condition—and demonstrates how embracing comprehensive, evidence-based strategies can create real change. The solutions exist; what's needed now is the courage to implement them. Send us a textWhat happens when autism representation meets reality? Kaelynn Partlow pulls back the curtain on life before, during, and after Netflix's "Love on the Spectrum" in this candid conversation about authenticity and advocacy in the public eye.Diagnosed with autism at age 10 after years of medical professionals dismissing her mother's concerns ("In the nineties, girls couldn't catch autism," she jokes), Kaylin's journey from struggling student to lead therapist at Project Hope showcases the power of proper identification and support. Now working with autistic clients while managing her growing social media presence, she navigates the complexities of being both clinician and community member with remarkable insight. The conversation reveals surprising truths about overnight fame - the eight-hour filming days, the unexpected social media explosion, and the loneliness of an experience "only you have, by yourself." Most poignantly, Kaelynn articulates the challenge of forming genuine connections when followers seek advice rather than friendship: "There's a power imbalance. When we meet up, you will want something from me." This reality led her to write "Life on the Bridge: Linking my World to Yours as an Autistic Therapist," offering practical guidance to the many families who reach out for support.Between discussions of sensory accommodations (fidget toys, headphones, earplugs) and behind-the-scenes television realities (being excluded from award ceremonies despite the show's success), emerges a portrait of someone determined to create meaningful change through authentic representation. As Kaelynn transitions from direct service to more conceptual advocacy work, her perspective remains invaluable for anyone seeking to understand autism beyond stereotypes and simplifications.Connect with Kaelynn on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube to follow her continuing journey advocating for authentic autism representation and understanding.Support the show
Kaelynn Partlow is an autism advocate and author, and one of the stars of the Netflix series, Love on the Spectrum. Today she joins Emily to talk about her experiences with autism, and they cover a lot of ground in this conversation. They discuss the evolution and effectiveness of ABA therapy, the need for accurate labeling, and using declarative language in communication. They also offer advice for parents of newly diagnosed children, and talk about the importance of finding community. TAKEAWAYS The world will label children if parents don't. The superpower label is a double-edged sword. Nuance is often lost in discussions about autism. Profound autism requires specific understanding and advocacy. Declarative language can reduce pressure in communication. Specific questions help autistic individuals engage better. Finding community is essential for parents of autistic children. Have Emily come and speak to your school district, company, or organization. Here's where you can find out more and get in touch. Kaelynn Partlow is an autism advocate, speaker, and author widely recognized for her appearance on the Netflix series Love on the Spectrum. The concept that education determines the future of a nation is a widely acknowledged consensus globally. That could be the reason education was at the forefront of the discussion on Thursday when President Xi Jinping joined the group meeting in Beijing of the country's national political advisers from the China Democratic League, the China Association for Promoting Democracy and the education sector."In every household, education is now a focal point of attention, with numerous hot topics in this field," Xi told the political advisers, who were attending the third session of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. "This not only indicates a strong educational atmosphere, but also reflects a certain gap between our education system and the expectations of the people."Cai Guangjie, deputy director of the Education Department of Sichuan province, presented her research findings to Xi, revealing a significant demographic shift in the country — the decrease in the school-age population. To address these emerging challenges, Cai gave her advice on optimizing resource allocation, including controlling the construction of new schools and facilitating the transfer of students from under-resourced rural schools to better-equipped schools in towns.Cai's remarks evoked Xi's memories of the early days of China's reform and opening-up. At the time, the country provided many children with the opportunity to receive education through initiatives such as raising funds from various sources to establish and operate schools, and through Project Hope, which was launched in 1989 with the goal of ensuring that students in impoverished areas were given greater access to education."Back then, I was quite happy to have raised funds to build a primary school in Liangjiahe village. But the school was later closed," Xi recalled. Liangjiahe was an impoverished village in northwestern China's Shaanxi province. However, the school's closure was actually a positive development, Xi said, because students were relocated to a school in the township area to receive a higher-quality education.Xi also said that new issues have been brought about "by changes occurring amid progress. The process of solving these problems is also a process of development and advancement".China's preschool education is an example. With the increase in the number of people living in urban areas in recent years, many kindergartens have been left unused in some areas, while the number of quality kindergartens is still short of demand.Xi said this situation cannot be changed immediately, as solving these issues requires adjustment of the educational structure."The adjustment might be realized only after the implementation of one or two five-year plans," he said. "There are many factors to consider in the process. But if we don't start planning now, it will be too late by then."Urgent priorityXi said that although education requires sustained efforts over time, it is also an urgent priority. He cited the development of education in the country since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, saying that tremendous changes have taken place since then.At that time, the country was still very poor, and literacy classes were organized to combat widespread illiteracy. "The matter of importance back then was whether people would have enough to eat. Since the entire nation was experiencing a period of economic hardship, spending on education was very limited," he said.Nowadays, school-age children's access to basic education in China has been significantly expanded, and the conditions and resources necessary for running a school have also greatly improved.Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012, the country's education spending has exceeded 4 percent of GDP for 12 consecutive years."This fully demonstrates the great importance attached to modern education by the Party," Xi said. However, the challenges keep showing up.Xu Kun, president of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, told Xi that he considers artificial intelligence as a key variable in building China into a leading country in education, given both the opportunities and the challenges that it brings.Xi noted that with the emergence of AI and the internet of things, the tools and methods for education will change, as will the abilities that students need to obtain."Reforms in such areas must be made in a timely manner," he said.Meanwhile, he stressed that efforts regarding the intellectual, emotional and spiritual development of students, as well as the cultivation of their basic cognitive and problem-solving abilities, must not be neglected."A solid foundation is essential," Xi said.He also highlighted the importance of reading."In the digital age, with the fast pace of society, it is not easy to sit down, calm your mind and patiently read a book," Xi said.He affirmed the proposal by Zheng Jiajian, president of Fujian Normal University, on creating a social environment in which people love to read.Xi said that children should develop the good habit of reading from a young age. "We can combine digital reading with traditional reading to preserve our core values and literacy," he said.He added that as long as young people establish firm ideals and strengthen beliefs and confidence from childhood, they will become reliable successors in carrying forward socialism with Chinese characteristics."Chinese modernization and national rejuvenation will depend on the next generations," Xi said.

This December 1st, Project HOPE was among the many organizations commemorating World AIDS Day as well as the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Over two decades, significant progress in HIV control, particularly in Africa, has been achieved through initiatives like President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Since 2003, PEPFAR has enabled over 20 million people to access antiretroviral therapy and prevented 5.5 million HIV-positive births. However, challenges persist in meeting UNAIDS' 95-95-95 targets—ensuring widespread testing, treatment, and viral suppression. Barriers include funding shortages, stigma, and competing health crises like COVID-19. Adolescents, especially girls and young women, face heightened risk due to social vulnerabilities and limited access to youth-friendly services. Mvemba is joined by Dr. Uche Ralph-Opara, Chief Health Officer at Project HOPE, to discuss the progress made and the hurdles that remain in achieving epidemic control. Their conversation highlights innovative approaches to addressing gender inequality and empowering vulnerable populations.

It feels like there is tragedy all around us at all times all over the world. Feeling hopeless and helpless is a very common emotional response. We just had a local tragedy at our childhood grade school, St. Francis of Assisi, when it was engulfed in flames and burnt down. While everyone got out safely, the weight of distress is heavy in our community. With disaster comes community, hope, love, and action….and that is what we wanted to talk about! How can we help? How can we efficiently lend a hand or a heart to those in need? What are the best ways to show we care? Tune in for all of these answers…and of course, a little humor ;) If you want to donate to any cause, volunteer in any way, or start the process for yourself on how to feel hopeful in a hopeless situation…CHECK OUT THE REFERENCE LINKS BELOW that will direct you to amazing organizations already in the fight for humanity.————If you want to workout with us, at home or in person, check us out www.CFITfitness.com We would love to have you join the CFIT Community :)Follow us for updates, inspiration, and ridiculousness!Instagram: @fittoberealpodcast Instagram/Facebook/Tik Tok @cfitfitness Email us! Welcome back to The Peds NP Acute Care Faculty series! This series was created and peer-reviewed by national leaders in acute care PNP education collaborating with one another to meet the needs of our current and future colleagues. In the push for competency-based education where faculty verify the skills of what a student can do, rather than their knowledge, our series focuses on the application of didactic content with a practical approach so that you can learn nuances of clinical skills before you reach the bedside. This episode explores wellness for the pediatric nurse practitioner. We first discuss burnout in terms of its physical and mental impact on the provider as well as poorer patient outcomes and healthcare systems burdens. After we identify symptoms of burnout and compassion fatigue, we'll discuss what wellness looks like in various systems at work from organizational culture of wellness to ease of daily work and finally personal resilience. We end with a discussion on self-compassion and introduce the evidence in support of meditation as a strategy to promote mind-body wellness. For some, this concept is new, so the technical aspects of meditation are unpacked to facilitate your own path to daily wellness. This episode pairs well with the 5-minute meditation for pediatric providers. References: Berwick, D. M., Nolan, T. W., & Whittington, J. (2008). The triple aim: care, health, and cost. In this podcast, we start by considering the current environmentally caused crisis in the chocolate industry. If the cocoa farmer is to survive this crisis, the need for participating in more of the value chain has never been more critical. To do this, the farmer needs to focus more on quality rather than just quantity. That is, the farmer needs to apply scientific principles to make flavor beans rather than bulk beans. Three steps lead to optimum quality: fermentation, drying, and triage, and these steps are the focus of this podcast and of Project Hope and Fairness 's mission for 2024. I hope you enjoy this very informative episode. Tom Neuhaus As always, we are looking to help African cocoa farmers become African chocolate makers. Join the revolution by donating to the cause!1. “Never deprive someone of hope; it might be all they have.” Project HOPE is a global health and humanitarian aid non-governmental organization founded by Dr. William B. Walsh in 1958. Their first operations in Africa began in the mid-1960s in Guinea; and since then, they have reached 13 countries in Africa. Project Hope began its work in Sierra Leone during the 2014 Ebola Epidemic to help combat the outbreak. During this period, the organization recognized the need to increase capacity to improve the health outcomes of women, newborns, and children, which has now become the primary focus of their work in the country. The organization has collaborated with the responsive leadership at the Ministry of Health to lower the rate of maternal mortality from 1360 per 100,000 live births to the current rate of 443. Furthermore, Sierra Leone have developed a 5-point strategy of reducing the maternal mortality rate to less than 300 per 100,000 live births by 2025. Mvemba is joined by Dr. Uche Ralph-Opara, the Chief Health Officer at Project HOPE to discuss the current situation, work, and progress made by Project Hope in improving maternal health crisis in Sierra Leone.

Whatever your business - writing, art, music, tech, coding, sales, scientist, cook, anything - you've heard that publicity can get you and your work in front of your intended audience as well as others who can help you grow. But how? It seems overwhelming and confusing. Jennifer Perry is the owner of Lone Wolf Commnications, LLC, a public relations firm established in 2006. Jennifer has worked with Feld Entertainment,HBO Documentaries, Project Hope, doctors, satellite communications pros, authors, filmmakers, musicians and more. Her popular book on publicity, SELL YOUR BOOKS TODAY! provides a step by step guide for authors to be their own publicist if they can't afford one, and the basics apply to people in several fields. Also the executive producer and host of Madame Perry's Salon, and former host and producer of her own cable tv show in the late 80s and early 90s, she knows a thing or two about media. Callers are welcome!

After decades of abandonment, the neon lights are glowing at the Rusty Pick tavern as Chad's gang hosts a grand reopening celebration. As new faces drift through the crowd, outsiders have come in search of the "Treasure of Appalachia" and one group will stumble upon something far more valuable. Elsewhere Commander Johns and Charles Bishop still are hunting for Hugo Warren, their trail ending at Sugar Grove. With the help of an old ally, they uncover dark secrets that raise even more questions about Project Lazarus and the Appalachia Experiment. The Judge is on the move, about to fire the first shot that will mark the beginning of the Battle for Appalachia. The board is set, the pieces are in place. It all starts now.
