By Their Side: Advocating for Children in Foster Care

Join me for this episode of By Their Side as I have an insightful conversation with Rick Griffin, a renowned expert in trauma-informed care and the neuroscience behind resilience. Rick shares some truly fascinating insights that have completely shifted my perspective. I had always thought of resilience as simply the ability to "bounce back" from adversity, but Rick explains that it's so much more complex than that; it's about the delicate balance of the brain's reward system and how trauma can tip that balance off-center. The way that he breaks down the role of hormones like dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin is truly eye-opening. These "feel-good chemicals" are so important for helping the brain and body regulate after a stressful event, but for kids who have experienced trauma, their brains can become "sticky,” or overly sensitive to certain triggers that send them spiraling back into that stress response, and Rick stresses the power of relationships in helping to restore that balance. Having someone who knows your unique triggers and can intentionally stimulate those feel-good hormones can really make all the difference! Even simple things like a familiar smell or touch can be incredibly grounding for a child in distress. As CASAs, it's important for us to realize how critical it is for us to be that for them. It's not about applying a one-size-fits-all approach but rather about learning their unique neurology so that we can support them in the ways that are most helpful, and Rick's insights have left me feeling both humbled and empowered. Tune in for a better understanding of the incredible complexity of the human brain and how we can use that knowledge to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the children whom we serve! Highlights: [1:39] - Hear how Rick founded the Neuro Leadership Academy after discovering brain-based methods improve trauma interventions dramatically. [4:34] - Resilience, to Rick, is the brain's way of balancing threat detection with resource pursuit. [7:38] - Rather than just “bouncing back,” resilience involves chemicals that support balance and survival. [8:07] - Through evolution, Rick explains, our brains have learned to seek safety and resources, forming the roots of resilience. [11:46] - Too much cortisol harms us, so the brain rewards regulation with feel-good neurochemicals. [12:41] - Rick explains resilience in biological terms: survival depends on more than just threat avoidance. [15:17] - Rick argues that pursuing what nourishes us is just as important to resilience as avoiding danger. [17:48] - Trust begins when consistent care links physical needs to emotional safety. [21:08] - Rick points out how brains differ in plasticity; some require repeated efforts, but healing still remains entirely possible. [22:05] - Hear Rick's student story illustrating how quickly meaningful therapeutic shifts can occur. [24:47] - Being a “stress detective” means observing triggers to reduce harm and help build resilience. [26:22] - Recognizing and regulating your own responses can foster calm. [28:21] - Rick points out that observing social, sensory, and value-based triggers helps reduce stress and support resilience. [31:49] - Even small triggers can cause trauma responses, so it's important to respond with curiosity rather than judgment. [34:33] - Understanding everyone's unique brain wiring, Rick stresses, can help improve mental health support. [36:29] - Rick explains how everyone has unique brain sensitivities, so we should normalize differences instead of judging them. [38:32] - Understanding others' unique mental experiences can lead to connection and prevent feelings of isolation. [41:12] - Having caring relationships provides lasting emotional support through all stages of life. [43:36] - Recognizing personal triggers such as voice pitch can improve communication and family dynamics. What a week for The Arsenal and what a game for Spurs!  First, Arsenal see through Lens to the tune of 6 - 0, then scare Wolves before subduing them 2-1.  Up north, Spurs ran, passed, and laughed their way to an exciting 3-3 draw with now third place Man City and their profligate center forward turned Eeyore  of the Eastlands.  Arteta said Arsenal just needed to score early and they did in both games this week.  Cal is all too happy to relive all eight goals and how the first in each game opened the floodgates.  But that's not all:  there are discussions of Arsenal's domination of their Champion's League Group, the upcoming match vs PSV, and what the hell is a "dead rubber?"  Cal and Rick move on to review the match against Wolves and Arsenal's ever improving attack, Zinchenko--the good and the bad, the 5 straight wins after Newcastle and the impact of Arteta's comments, and how the improving left eight is driving Arsenal's improving form.Postecoglou said, "let's have a go, mate."  And boy did they.  Rick is part proud, part excited, and mostly amazed at the way Tottenham are playing.  Not just the results, but the daring, the flair, and the courage.  Once again, Spurs goes to Manchester, faces the defending Premier League Champion, and returns to North London with something to show for their efforts.  Hear Rick share his thoughts on a team without their best players and a manager without fear.  Thank you for listening!@ATFPodcast1@ATFPodcast2https://www.arsenaltottenhamfanpodcast.com

There is about a 50% or more attrition rate in the number of students that start post-secondary automotive programs and graduate. There are many reasons for this, however, it is a large number. Listen to the Vision interview on NASTF, the Road To Great Technicians (https://remarkableresults.biz/e312/) . Automotive careers may not necessarily include turning wrenches for your entire life. There are so many job opportunities in the industry. The skills of our technicians are wanted by other industries. There are many reasons we are losing our talent to include, training, support, career path, pay and benefits among many others. Why aren’t there more students landing at independent shops?  The dealer networks are in communication with the college and instructors. Workaround their schedules is a barrier. Students want to know what type of internship work they will do. They do not want to be in the lube bay for the entire program. Get them exposed to challenges inside the shop. We are working in a mold of education that has a lot of debt to it and we need to break the mold. Automotive technology programs at all levels are expensive. The cost per student is high. There he helped start and instruct the Pro-Tech Automotive Internship program for 12 years. Hear Rick in his own episode 184 (https://remarkableresults.biz/e184/) . Talking points: Most instructors have migrated from industry. Not many current students of automotive technology consider a career as an instructor. The technician shortage predicates an instructor shortage in the future. Scott Norman is asked all the time if he can help find instructors for other schools. Retiring instructors need replacements. There are not many in the pipeline; therefore some programs are shutting down. An instructor automotive technology challenges: Pay Certifications: Meeting education requirements. There are aftermarket opportunities for trainers as suggested by Ryan Kooiman. Becoming a full-time automotive instructor is a viable career path for working technicians. As an instructor, you are not handed a script. You need to create your own lessons. You may have the technical ability but also need presentation skills. Mentoring and finding the future leaders/instructors will be necessary. There is more to engaging students than just having the experience. You can learn to teach … your experience is the valuable asset. Teaching is a definite career change. The subject matter is the same but the job description is totally different. The money is a big factor in the teacher role. They will want to take a pay cut to become an educator. There are benefits. Days not as long. Time off in Summer.   (http://eepurl.com/bhqME9) Be socially involved and in touch with the show: Email (mailto:carm@remarkableresults.biz)
