Cameron & Chris are back because this was a special request movie for us to review! This is a staple in Black households but will it still be enjoyable all these years after not seeing it? I don't know if it's because we haven't recorded together in a while but we were on ten this episode. We were singing, laughing at inappropriate jokes, reminiscing about True Crime: Streets of LA, learning about new age terms that i'm not too familiar with and there is a secret fourth guest in the room with us as well. On 24 March, a collaboration between Acid Jazz Records and the Flying Dutchman label sees the release of veteran soul singer Billy Valentine's new album. The first album of new music on the iconic jazz label since 1976. Billy Valentine & The Universal Truth features testifying renditions of eight message songs, with Valentine's emphatic, lissome voice drawing upon the soul-jazz legacy of such Flying Dutchman singer and songwriters as Gil Scot-Heron and Leon Thomas. In addition to songs by these two extraordinary talents, the album also features songs originally written and recorded by Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Eddie Kendricks, War, and Prince. Billy Valentine may not be a household name but should be familiar to most from Simply Red's 1983 Rendition of the Valentine Brothers' ‘Money's Too Tight (To Mention)'. Originally written and recorded by Billy and his brother John, the song was a protest against President Ronald Reagan's economic policies. Around the time of performing with the Valentine Brothers, Billy's recognition as a songwriter emerged after penning songs for other artists such as Will Jennings, Ray Charles, and the Neville Brothers. After the demise of the Valentine Brothers, Billy struck up a songwriting partnership with Bob Thiele, Jr. (son of Flying Dutchman Records' founder, Bob Thiele), which led to him singing demos for Warner Chappell songwriters, such as Gerry Goffin, Mark Isham, Burt Bacharach, and Hal David. Singing demos opened doors for Valentine to work in television and movies. His vocals can be heard in such works as: the 1991 classic movie, The Five Heartbeats, and songs produced for TV series including Boston Legal and, with Thiele, Jr., on music composed for the television show, Sons of Anarchy. Now, after several decades spent working together, Valentine and long-time collaborator Thiele Jr. present Billy Valentine & The Universal Truth. Produced by Thiele Jr., the album recording began at Hollywood's legendary East-West Studios (Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, Elvis Presley's ‘68 Comeback Special, Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On and Michael Jackson's Thriller) right before the coronavirus pandemic. As the album session proceeded, the world erupted in protest after the May 2020 murder of George Floyd, adding to the poignancy of the recordings with the songs taking on a new urgency. Having always been drawn to message songs – Valentine remembers witnessing the civil rights protests through the Deep South in the United States, the Kent State University shootings in 1970, and the Vietnam War and its devastating aftermath on many military veterans returning to civilian life – the album's selection of songs' specific topics and themes speak to modern times. In particular, the rise of the Black Lives Matter after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who murdered Trayvon Martin; the polarizing presidency of Donald Trump, which ended with the violent uprising at the Capitol Building; and the rise in gun violence amidst economic and social disparities, all made more apparent during the height of the pandemic. Opening with a plaintive makeover of Curtis Mayfield's 1970s ‘We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue', a sobering ballad about projecting racial pride and Black humanity in the face of insurmountable odds, the theme continues on Valentine's righteous rendition of Eddie Kendricks' 1972 Black Power anthem, ‘My People Hold On'. Chicago PD NBS-TV Series, Tony® Award, Grammy® Awards, Lifetime Achievement Grammy's & Rock & Roll Hall & Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame Honors. He was there BEFORE his Parents won these & learned the Roots & Blessings & Pitfalls of Stardom from childhood. Of Chicago PD, Ronn says "NBC and Dick Wolf paid me the highest honor by using my song, “I Want Your Loving” as the opening song for Season 9/episode 11 entitled “Lies."He is a great vocalist, actor, writer, historian plus!!Ronn David knows more than anyone that he has a lot to live up to. He has his Vocal Gift! The son of Ruth Brown, the Queen of Rhythm and Blues and Clyde McPhatter, the founder and lead vocalist of The Drifters. His Dad is in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Billy Ward's Dominoes & The Drifters.Ruth Brown used her influence to press for musicians' rights regarding royalties and contracts; these efforts led to the founding of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. Her performances in the Broadway musical Black and Blue earned Brown a Tony Award, and the original cast recording won a Grammy Award. Brown was a recipient of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. In 2017, Brown was inducted into National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. She is also the aunt to legendary hip hop MC Rakim. He's toured with artists as varied as Bonnie Raitt and Rick James, performed three times at The White House and often pays tribute to his famous dad in concert by performing Drifters classics like “On Broadway” and “Under The Boardwalk” with his own contemporary twist), movies Ronn clearly enjoying singing side by side, then eye-to-eye with Halle Berry in “Why Do Fools Fall In Love” and appearing in other great music-in-movies films about The Temptations, Little Richard and The Five Heartbeats ), and television (a young Ronn worked with the legendary comic Redd Foxx on his final TV show). Now, Ronn is now poised to take his silky vocal stylings to radio stations, on-line portals and dance clubs across the USA.Ronn David knows what it takes to make it in the music business…and it all begins with a great song. “I Want Your Lovin'”, Ronn's a single from his upcoming album, is that song.Impossibly catchy, smoothly soulful and with a ready-made dance poised to fill the floor at clubs and parties from coast-to-coast, “I Want Your Lovin'” just may give Ronn David something he richly deserves; the opportunity to shine as brightly as his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame parents stars. “I love and respect what my parents accomplished very much; but like most folks, I want to make my own mark on the world And for me, a big part of that is to make my music and succeed on my own merits”, says Ronn with an easy smile from his Los Angeles home, a stone's throw away from Hollywood Boulevard and the Capitol Records studio where his folks recorded some of their biggest hits. Ronn David is also a proud Howard University Alumni!Turns out Ronn is far too modest about what he's already accomplished on his own. He was there BEFORE his Parents won these & learned the Roots & Blessings & Pitfalls of Stardom from childhood. He is a great vocalist, actor, writer, historian plus!! Of Chicago PD, Ronn says "NBC and Dick Wolf paid me the highest honor by using my song, “I Want Your Loving” as the opening song for Season 9/episode 11 entitled “Lies."Ronn David knows more than anyone that he has a lot to live up to. David is already a triple-threat veteran of music.RonnDavid.com© 2022 Building Abundant Success!!2022 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Radio @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBAS

The Five Heartbeats (1991) / Platform (2000) This week we're getting sentimental as we hit the road with Robert Townsend and The Five Heartbeats and tour the countryside with Jia Zhangke and the Fenyang Peasant Cultural Group
This week, Les chats with Billboard chart-topping singer and songwriter Billy Valentine, best known for his work on The Five Heartbeats, “Boston Legal” and “Sons of Anarchy.” Billy is a multitalented performer whose varied career has taken him across the United States and around the world. For five seasons, Billy's singing voice could be heard every week on the ABC-TV series “Boston Legal” from the theme song right through to the end of every episode. “Sons of Anarchy,” the hit FX series, was a home for Billy's voice throughout its seven season run. His unique take on songs by Credence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, and Sly & The Family Stone introduced a whole new audience to his talents. In 1991, director Robert Townsend chose Billy as the lead singer in his film The Five Heartbeats. As a songwriter and vocalist, Billy has collaborated with such greats as Will Jennings, Burt Bacharach, and The Neville Brothers. We discuss his amazing career, as well as his upcoming show at The Chelsea Table and Stage on Saturday, June 8 at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $35, which includes a $15 food and beverage credit. Song: Stay In My CornerSong by: The DellsTheme: Bring Back the MusicTheme by: Gail Nobles © 2021All music and vocals by: Gail NoblesHi! I'm Gail Nobles, and we need to bring back some music of love. And that's what the Mighty Dells were all about. In today's topic coming up next.(Theme: Bring Back the Music)Actor: I want to start by saying “the old days were the fun days”. (Quote by Marvin Jr.) ~ The Dells(Singing)Actor: “Basic rhythm and blues!” The greatest music in America. “Stay In My Corner” by the Dells. A 1965 soul song which peaked in the top 30 on the R&B singles chart. It is said The Dells re-recorded “Stay In My Corner” and took the new version of the song to number one.The Dells were a vocal group formed in high school in 1953. They released their first recording in 1954 and two years later had their first R&B hit with “Oh What a Night”.When I think of the Dells, I think of honeymoon music. Their songs are perfect for a honeymoon playlist. When you say old music is out of style, that's like saying romance is out of style. The Mighty Dells are totally unforgettable. In case you didn't know, the movie “The Five Heartbeats is based on the lives of the Dells. I'm Gail Nobles, and you're listening to the Cat Bear. Thank you for listening.

https://www.waynelinseymusic.com/The consummate musician, producer, arranger, songwriter and artist in his own right, Wayne Linsey's list of credits reads like a who's who in contemporary music. Legendary names like Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder are among the plethora of artists with whom the L.A.-based maestro has worked on stage and in the recording studio. Super producers like Kenneth ‘Babyface' Edmonds and hitmakers like Whitney Houston and Earth, Wind & Fire always call Wayne to work on their projects; as a touring musician, Wayne spent many years with the ever-popular band Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, lending his distinctive and soulful touch as the primary keyboardist to the group's energetic live show. While he maintains a non-stop schedule of touring and studio work, Wayne's focus in 2009 is his first solo project: “As a professional, I've been blessed to work with every artist of my dreams. I also see the purpose of my gift to provoke thought and enjoyment through my own music.” In keeping with an array of personal musical influences – which include Duke Ellington, Parliament, Oscar Peterson, Donny Hathaway, Wonder, Beverly and Davis – Wayne's new project runs the gamut from jazz and R&B to world music and rap: “The album is not based on one dimension stylistically,” he notes. “Diversity is important to me. There's enough material on the CD for the smooth jazz market: as an instrumentalist, that can be your only outlet for radio. But I didn't approach this album the way the industry usually does by favoring one musical style…” As a multi-talented instrumentalist, Wayne plays keyboards, guitar, bass and drums on the record; special guest players include trombonist Fred Wesley, Bobby Brown, Michael ‘Patches' Stewart on trumpet, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, drummer Teddy Campbell., Kevin Ricard on percussion, Hiram Bullock, Paul Jackson Jr., John “Jubu” Smith & Tariqh Akoni on guitars and vocalists Leon Ware, Louis Price Jr., Lamont Van Hook, Sy Smith and Wayne's former wife, artist in her own right, Lynne Fiddmont, among others. Incorporating funky grooves, soulful slow jams and pieces with topical lyrical messages and including “Bookendz,” a tune originally commissioned by Miles Davis which appears on his live recordings as “Wayne's Tune,” Wayne's new CD, “A Song Without Words,” reflects the broad spectrum of music he's mastered since his early days studying at Washington DC's Howard University. Since that time, Wayne's musical dexterity has brought increased work in the television and film area: he contributed to Robert Townsend's popular “Five Heartbeats” movie, worked on “Motown Live” & “Fame” with longtime friend Ricky Minor and in 2003, created music for the Fox network's “Cedric The Entertainer” show, and can be seen regularly on this season's “American Idol” as a member of “The Rickey Minor Band”. Asked on a regular basis to perform at music industry veteran Clive Davis' famed pre-Grammy party, Wayne has also played on the BET Awards, The Essence Awards, The NAACP Image Awards, The Grammys, The Billboard Awards, “The UNCF An Evening of Stars” where he was featured with Nancy Wilson. Wayne was also called on to fill the piano shoes of the late “Ray Charles” in the television tribute “Genius – A Night For Ray”. https://www.waynelinseymusic.com/https://www.facebook.com/wlinsey1https://www.instagram.com/waynelinsey/
