Bio: With a deep voice as powerful as lightning, Brandon Castro has always been a voice for the truth despite the opposition. Castro graduated from Queens College in 2023 with a Bachelor's in History & Political Science. As a student, Castro was a leader, an advocate, and a fighter. He actively fought to improve the lives of young men and women by advocating for self-improvement practices, the meaning of responsibility, and overall quality of life changes to boost students' confidence and prepare them for the many obstacles life will bring. Despite being outnumbered most of his life, Castro is ready to continue speaking up and fighting to have a successful campaign for State Assembly. At 24, Castro's candidacy is a statement against the same politicians playing politics with hard-working people's lives. If Castro's campaign proves anything, it is that all people, young and old, male or female, deserve a better alternative and dialogue to discuss issues that are important to the residents of Queens. Before 2024, Castro acquired many titles: Academic Senate Delegate, Career Development Chairman, University Student Senate Delegate, USS Scholarship Committee Chair, and more! He has never been afraid to stand out and speak up for his beliefs. With his strong character, stature, and voice, Brandon Castro is a prime candidate and will soon be Assemblymember for Assembly District 30 in Queens! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mike-k-cohen/support
It's no secret; the pandemic kicked off the great resignation. Organizations in all industries scramble for talent to fill open positions. One sector of vital importance in dire need of skilled workers to fill a talent pipeline in cybersecurity. A 2022 Cybersecurity Workforce Study concluded that the global cybersecurity workforce gap has increased by 26.2% compared to 2021, leaving a void of 3.4 million jobs. The threats to global infrastructures and organizational networks are never-ending, and without a fully stocked cyber workforce, those threats create untold damage. The question on Ron J Stefanski's mind: is there a talent pool waiting in the wings to answer the call, and what are today's disruptors doing to find this talent and bring them into the cybersecurity space? Two disruptors answered the call and joined Stefanski on DisruptED to talk about talent and to get the right people onto the bus.Mark Jaster, Founder & CEO of FOUR18 Intelligence Corp, and Marlena Sessions, CEO of NOVAworks, spoke with Stefanski about the situation.“The problem we are faced with today is there are way too many cyberattacks for our resources and our ability to defend them,” Jaster said. “We don't have enough people, we don't have enough knowledge about what's happening, and it's happening in real-time, incentivized by the payoff that the attackers have when they succeed.” Stefanski, Jaster, and Sessions discuss the following:• Developing talent to match job seekers• How to create skills to increase the talent pipeline in cybersecurity• Finding people who may not be thinking of a cybersecurity role but who could be great candidates“At NOVAworks, we are stewards of our taxpayer dollars,” Sessions said. “We don't say ‘no' to any job seeker. Anybody can come in. I could find myself out of work or a laid-off mid-level career professional, but we do focus on certain areas of folks who might have been historically excluded.”Mark Jaster is a growth strategist and innovator with a deep skill set and unique methods for solving the most complex problems of innovation strategy and product adoption in complex markets such as information systems, medical devices, biotechnology, and enterprise risk management. Jaster holds an MSE in Engineering Design & Management from Stanford University and a BSE in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University.Marlena Sessions has over two decades of experience working to change lives. Before her role with NOVAworks, Sessions was the Executive Director for San Bernardino County Workforce Development Board, worked in leadership roles for Grant Associates, and led the Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County as the COO and CEO for seventeen years. She holds her BA in History/Political Science from Whitworth University and her MA in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University.

Naked Grace Lucas Kitchen pt 1Many people today are beginning to realize that they need God now more than ever. With everything going on in the world, with COVID shutdowns and a resurgence in the pandemic to businesses being shut down, closed and some never to reopen. Careers suddenly ending. Income stopped or cut way back. People everywhere are wondering if they are really saved? They are wondering if something does happen, would they be one of those who would see Jesus as He welcomes them to Heaven…or not… That is one of the most important questions that people who are searching for eternal life ask, “What do I have to do to be saved?” On the surface, that should be one of the easiest questions for other believers to answer for someone. But it seems as if it is, instead, one that most people struggle with when trying to share the simple Gospel message of Salvation with others. So it was with my guest today, Lucas Kitchen. Lucas grew up in Kilgore Texas, attending Kilgore Bible Church, and graduated from Kilgore High School. Despite growing up in the buckle of the Bible belt, confusion about the Christian faith plagued every step of Lucas’ journey. Lucas did find the Lord and, after high school, he attended and graduated from Letourneau University with Bachelor's of interdisciplinary studies in Bible, Psychology, and History/Political Science. He is currently the teaching pastor at Shreveport Bible Church in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 2012 he began to write and has since published 15 books, one of which is called “Naked Grace” and we will be discussing this book today. In NAKED GRACE, Lucas Kitchen uses wit, humor, and visual storytelling to invite you to join his life-long quest for answers. This multi-decade pursuit took Lucas to some laugh-out-loud places. When the stakes were as high as they could be, the simple answer finally came. His true life story in NAKED GRACE explores the confusion that many Christians quietly experience on a weekly basis. As this book demonstrates: just because they’re quiet doesn’t mean they get it. This self-deprecating tale will resonate with anyone who has wrestled with these unanswered questions and is dying to know the truth. Help me welcome to the program, Lucas Kitchen! Lucas, thank you for taking the time to come on the program today! First question, other than brief bit of information I just shared, tell us in your own words, “Who is Lucas Kitchen?” Now, tell us a little about your new book, “Naked Grace.” You talk about being confused as to “What do I need to do to be saved?” How so? Can you give us an example of how your confusion caused some problems? Did you feel it was just you that was confused? Or did you know others felt the same way? What was the response from your ministry leaders whom you were asking these questions to? Why did you title your book, “Naked Grace?” Where did that come from? Give us the basic layout of your book. Can you give us a couple of examples of the stories you share? I urge you to go down into the show notes and get a copy of Lucas Kitchen’s book, “Naked Grace” today. Do it while you are thinking about it. This book will be a great addition to your reading program. Over the past six decades, Henry Kissinger has been one of America’s most consistently praised―and reviled―public figures. Diplomatic historian and Distinguished Professor of History Political Science and European Studies at Vanderbilt University Thomas Schwartz’s new book “Henry Kissinger and American Power: A Political Biography” considers whether he was a master strategist or a cold-blooded monster who eroded America’s moral standing for the sake of self-promotion. Join us for a look at a man whose legacy is as complex as the last 60 years of US history itself in this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large on WBAI.

Islamic State Has a New Leader after ISIS Founder al-Baghdadi Killed in US Raid (0:31)Guest: John Macfarlane, Adjunct Professor of History & Political Science, Utah Valley UniversityThe Islamic State terror group has named a new leader to replace the group's founder Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who died in a US military strike a week ago. President Trump said in that announcement that “capturing or killing Baghdadi has been the top national security priority “of his administration. How Emojis are Impacting the Law (18:25)Guest: Eric Goldman is a Professor of Law at Santa Clara University School of Law, Co-Director of High Tech Law InstituteThere are two emojis I use a lot in texts: the winking face and the thumbs up icon. I know what I mean when I use them. I have no idea how the people I'm texting are interpreting those emojis. Usually that's not a big deal. But what if our text thread ends up as evidence in court and now a judge or jury has to decide exactly what my thumbs-up emoji meant? Was it a firm commitment to do something? Was it just a passive aggressive way of ending the conversation? I've used to both ways, to be honest. Why is Antisemitism on the Rise and What Can Be Done About It? (30:40)Guest: Bill Bernstein, West Coast Director, American Society for Yad VashemAnti-Semitic attacks worldwide rose last year, particularly in major Western democracies like the US, France, Britain and Germany. Most of those were cases of vandalism or threats of violence. But 2018 also saw the deadliest attack ever against Jews on US soil, when a gunman stormed the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh last October, killing 11 worshippers. And in New York City, right now, police say anti-Semitic hate crimes are up 63% compared to last year. Those include Orthodox Jewish men being violently attacked in the street. Why is this happening? Clam Gardens Provide Stable Food and Unite Generations for Indigenous Groups in Pacific Northwest (51:10)Guest: Skye Augustine, Clam Garden Project Coordinator at Parks CanadaThousands of years ago, indigenous people living in the Pacific Northwest had an ingenious way of cultivating clams for food diet. As America was colonized and tribes were displaced, those farming techniques were abandoned. But clam populations along the West Coast are suffering today, so there's an effort underway to help indigenous groups reclaim the “clam gardens” their ancestors built along the shoreline. Skye Augustine is heading up one such project for the national parks system in Canada. What Do Food Date Labels Mean? (1:08:30)Guest: Emily M. Broad Leib, J.D., Assistant Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy ClinicWhen you go to the grocery store, everything has a date. The milk may say “best used by next week,” while a box of crackers might say you have a year. But what do those dates really mean? Confusion over date labels can lead to perfectly good food being thrown out. It is estimated that in American, between 30-40% of available food is wasted. Christian LeFer creates solutions to benefit the nonprofit sector. His passion has always been to empower others to impact their world: “Unleash your inner hero!” His family's involvement in the community and as advocates for foster and adoptive parenting, along with a successful consultancy in founding and fundraising for nonprofits, make this foray into software and solutions for charities a natural. Having organized successful 1st Amendment litigation in state and federal courts, Christian has also become a sought-after adviser on free speech and civil liberties issues. LeFer's key strengths include vision, copywriting, marketing (direct and online), and sales. I earned a B.A. from Rutgers University in History/Political Science, cum laude. What is Charitable Solicitation Registration/Fundraising Compliance? A: 41 out of 50 U.S. states have enacted regulations requiring “charitable solicitation” registration – covering virtually every conceivable method of fundraising activity by nonprofits. The registration process varies by state, and depends on factors including annual revenues and method of fundraising – creating a confusing patchwork of regulations. State government agencies including Attorneys General and Secretaries of State have staffed compliance enforcement departments with prosecutors and Administrative Law judges, and a finding of non-compliance can result in monetary fines, civil or criminal penalties, and revocation of the right to raise funds. These laws no longer only apply to large-scale phone and mail fundraising: A passive website “donate” button or social media “share” can result in your organization being targeted and penalized – even publicly listed as an “offender” online. Abby's sound is the alchemy of soul, folk, jazz, gospel, R&B, country, rock and pop, forging a gem that erases musical boundaries. Abby has performed throughout New York City to rave reviews at S.O.B’s, Joe's Pub, Bitter End, Village Underground and Blue Note. Abby and her Band have opened for Kindred, Leela James, Ledisi, Dwele, Rahsaan Patterson, Chrisette Michele and Robin Thicke. Recently, Abby won BlackPlanet's Soul Beach Music Festival's First Annual Competition in 2009 and was featured in GIANT Magazine's September 2009 issue as an artist to watch. Abby Dobson has also sung backgrounds for several recording artists, including Talib Kweli and John Legend. Abby was born in Kingston, Jamaica and moved to Brooklyn, NY at 7 yrs old. Her early recollections of music are of country and reggae songs she sang from the radio as a child, and her aunt shushing the family at the dinner table to listen. Though no one in her family was a professional musician, she learned later that her father courted her mother crooning Nat “King” Cole tunes. She sang leads in church choir with her cousins by her side as young as 9, studied classical voice and (briefly) piano in junior high, found herself giving recitals of arias and Great American Songbook Standards as the only child among adults at her high school music teacher’s private gatherings, and continued her singing studies through college and beyond. Abby was drawn like a magnet to the powerful vocal persuasions of Sarah Vaughan, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker and Donny Hathaway while inspired by the introspective acoustic leaning writings of Tracy Chapman, Dolly Parton, and Bob Marley. Abby attended Williams College in Massachusetts majoring in History/Political Science. Abby dipped hit he underground circuit singing cover songs at open mic nights. Though no one in her family was a professional musician, she learned later that her father courted her mother crooning Nat “King” Cole tunes. She sang leads in church choir with her cousins by her side as young as 9, studied classical voice and (briefly) piano in junior high, found herself giving recitals of arias and Great American Songbook Standards as the only child among adults at her high school music teacher's private gatherings, and continued her singing studies through college and beyond. She began writing her own songs as a better way to get a record deal.
