Firearms aren't just something people partake in as a hobby or piece of their lifestyle. They are an investment. Something that they pour time, effort, money and parts of their life into to change the way they live their lives. While the price of firearms varies, if there was ever a time where something absolutely needed to "do what it's supposed to", it's with firearms. When we consider the variety of x-factors inside of any purchase, the path to firearm ownership is littered with many different kinds of landmines that are NOT easy to nagivate. The Consumer Advocacy Council is calling on the Electric Authority to step up to ensure power companies are being transparent. NZIER research reveals the rules intended to shine a light on whether the big electricity companies are inflating prices, aren't working. Gentailers —companies that both generate and sell electricity— are required to disclose the price they use internally to sell power to their retail arms. Consumer Advocacy Council Chair Deborah Hart told Mike Hosking that gathering this information isn't enough. She says to make proper sense of the data, the Electric Authority needs to make a pricing benchmark. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There are concerns that another rise in power bills could be the straw that breaks the camel's back. The Commerce Commission is proposing increased revenue limits for Transpower and 16 local lines companies to help cover rising demands of the national grid. Electric bills would increase by an average $15 a month from April and $5 a month over the following four years to cover maintenance. Consumer Advocacy Council Chair Deborah Hart says all alternatives need to be weighed up before a decision is made. She says costs are already too much for some with rising inflation and the phased removal of the low fixed user fees. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
As cold weather continues to grip the country amid uncertainty about power supplies, consumers are being urged to make sure they are getting the best deal on their electricity. Consumer Advocacy Council Chair Deborah Hart tells Mike Hosking that electricity bills can be terribly complicated and confusing, making it hard to compare prices. Hart believes power companies should be required to have consistent information on power bills and provide a best power notice that lets consumers know if there is a better plan available. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Consumers will be feeling unsettled as the reliability of electricity supply is tested. A cold snap and low wind generation meant the country faced a potential supply shortfall, and Transpower asked people to reduce electricity use between 7 and 9am. Consumer Advocacy Council chair Deborah Hart says this kind of situation is not new, but the market model is obviously not working. She said that we need to turn our attention from only building infrastructure to delivering energy efficiency and innovation. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Consumer Advocacy Council says power bills are a riddle for many people, which makes it too hard for consumers to switch power companies and save money. The Council is pushing for simple bills, with clear information on price, as well as a requirement for power companies to tell customers when to switch plans to save money. This is already required in Australia, where power companies must display a Best Plan Notice, and the Council's Chair Deborah Hart says this should happen here too. Hart spoke to Corin Dann.
The Consumer Advocacy Council wants electricity retailers to make power bills as simple as possible, in an effort to help save consumers money. It's asking companies to inform customers if there's a cheaper plan available and how much they'd save by switching. Chair Deborah Hart told Mike Hosking that there needs to be more done to make electricity more competitive, and that this initiative would do so. She said it would place much more power in the hands of consumers. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The US healthcare system is plagued by corruption, and Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) are taking advantage of it. Express Scripts, the largest PBM, is sending out letters to dozens of clinicians and provider practices warning them of fraud, waste, and abuse for off-label prescribing of FDA-approved drugs. PBMs are making more money than the insurers that own them, and they engage in spread pricing and clawbacks. To become a good consumer of healthcare, David Contorno and Emma Fox suggest price shopping pharmacies, exploring manufacturer assistance programs, using coupons, and international sourcing. Consumers should also be their own advocates and ask their doctor what other options are available.Episode Outline:(00:00:00) Express Scripts Fraud(00:18:21) Prescription Drug Costs(00:04:45) PBM Profits(00:13:56) Pharmaceutical Pricing(00:09:29) Negotiating Drug PricesQuotes:(00:07:57) It's a long game, right? It's expensive right now. I get that. But if we're able to cure obesity along with who knows how many other comorbidities, what does that look like ten years from now, right?(00:21:31) Be your own advocate, because at the end of the day, you're the only one who pays clinically and financially for not being an advocate for yourself.(00:03:17) But I wish we could find something where literally they were defrauding people. I think that's ultimately what they're doing.(00:13:17) Every single other country negotiates drug pricing. They say you cannot bring that drug into this country unless you agree to this price. And not only does the US. Not do that, but there's a federal law that says we can't do that.(00:15:59) The hard part is not having coverage for it, because if you have coverage, but a deductible you can't afford, you don't qualify for this program.Social Post:Are you tired of the healthcare system's corruption? Tune in to learn more about how to get the best deal on your medications! #TheHealthcareHangover #PrescriptionAssistancePrograms #AffordableMedicationsBlog Post:The US healthcare system is in a state of disarray. Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) are taking advantage of this by sending out letters to dozens of clinicians and provider practices warning them of fraud, waste, and abuse for off-label prescribing of FDA-approved drugs. Express Scripts, the largest PBM, alone manages the pharmacy benefits for roughly 100 million people. It's no surprise that PBMs are making more money than the insurers that own them. They get an admin fee every time a transaction is processed, mark up the drugs, and do clawbacks. Optum, which is owned by UnitedHealthcare, accounts for the majority of their profit.Doctors are outraged that a PBM would have any right to tell them how to make clinical decisions for their patients. Alex Lickerman supports GLP-1 for weight loss, and it is effective. However, GLP-1 is a lifelong medication, and there are some concerns about it, such as muscle mass loss. Education is missing from these medications. Express Scripts is accusing some providers of falsifying diagnosis of type two diabetes in order to get through the prior authorization process. It's up to us to become good consumers of healthcare. David Contorno and Emma Fox suggest price shopping pharmacies, exploring manufacturer assistance programs, using coupons, and international sourcing. Consumers should also be their own advocates and ask their doctor what other options are available.Membership with a PBM such as Drexi can be a great way to save money. Drexi does not do spread pricing or clawbacks, but requires a small monthly fee. When using the Drexi card, the system looks like the consumer has insurance, but the insurance is not paying for anything. Manufacturer assistance programs and coupons are also a great way to save money. It's important to price out pharmacies as prices can vary widely. Employers are making choices for their health plans that can affect the cost of prescription drugs. The US healthcare system makes money when people are sick, unlike other countries. This is why the pharma industry charges high prices for drugs because they can and still make a profit. However, there are Prescription Assistance Programs (PAP) for name brand drugs for those who don't have coverage. Income limits for PAP vary by drug and number of people in the household. Good RX and Script Co offer discounts on drugs even if you have insurance.Express Scripts is threatening doctors for trying to get cheaper drugs for patients. Pharmacists have had their clinical roles stripped away due to PBMs deciding what is covered and what is not. Pharmacists can help those without insurance get name brand drugs for free or at a discounted rate. Doctor tweeted a pediatric oncologist in Texas saying he was "sick and tired of these insurance companies telling me what I can prescribe and what I can't prescribe." Insurance companies don't tell doctors what they can and can't prescribe, they just tell them what they're willing to pay for.Pre-certification and prior authorization are two processes that doctors and patients have to go through. Doctors are burned out because they're "sick and tired of insurance companies telling me what I can do and what I can't do." People can import medications from other countries, such as Canada, UK, New Zealand, or Australia, which are 40-70% less expensive than in the US.At the end of the day, it's important to be an informed consumer. Ask your doctor what other options are available, look into manufacturer assistance programs and coupons, price out pharmacies, and explore international sourcing. It's also important to be your own advocate and fight against the corruption in the US healthcare system.Episode LinksConnect with Emma FoxWebsiteEmma's WebsiteConnect with David ContornoLinkedInWebsiteOther MaterialsThese materials help you promote your podcast. The government supported the need for electricity retailers to introduce mandatory minimum standards to protect vulnerable consumers - so why, four years later has nothing happened?. Consumer advocates are questioning the lack of progress. Deborah Hart is the chair of the Consumer Advocacy Council, an independent advocate for residential and small business electricity consumers.
The Consumer Advocacy Council is calling for The Electricity Authority to make customer care guidelines mandatory. Electricity retailers have admitted to not fully complying with guidelines, including ensuring customers are on the best pricing plan and medically dependent customers can't be disconnected without notice. Council Chair Deborah Hart isn't surprised that only 18 of the 38 retailers were complying with the voluntary customer care guidelines. "Really, they should have been mandatory from the get-go. But now, we know they haven't worked as well as they should've and the Electricity Authority has to move quickly and make them mandatory." The majority of New Zealanders are worried electricity is going to become unaffordable, and unreliable, within the next decade. Those findings come from a survey late last year - before Cyclone Gabrielle. It was commissioned by the Consumer Advocacy Council, which the government set up in 2021 to represent small electricity users. The Council's Chair Deborah Hart spoke to Kim Hill.

Ron C. Henderson and Ron Camarota of the Louisiana Department of Insurance's Office of Consumer Advocacy join Discover Lafayette to speak on the ins and outs of home insurance policies, figuring out how to get adequate coverage, and what your rights are as a consumer, especially after a storm. With hurricane system here, this is an important topic. Knowing what your home insurance policy covers is critical to understanding your rights after a storm or catastrophic damage occurs. The Louisiana Department of Insurance is on a mission to educate consumers before they experience the heartbreak of being inadequately insured in the wake of a disaster. In Louisiana, flood damage is a common occurrence as 57 of our 64 parishes experience flooding. However, since 1964 in the U. S., flood damage coverage has been excluded from standard homeowner's insurance policies; it must be purchased separately under a policy underwritten by FEMA. This is the only insurance resort available to homeowners under Congress's National Flood Insurance Program. Many a homeowner policyholder has been devastated to learn they have no insurance coverage after a flood. Flood insurance covers water damage "from the ground up." That is, it kicks in when a storm causes water to enter your home from the ground level. Traditional homeowners/commercial policies will cover damage from "top-down" water damage that occurs. Your deductible can drastically affect the cost of your premium. Ron Henderson gave an example of his father who had maintained a $50 deductible for decades and wondered why his rates were so high. Once he determined he could afford a $10,000 deductible, his premiums were reduced accordingly. The Louisiana Department has an online rate-shopping tool to help you compare insurance rates among companies to get the best rate for your individual needs. Visit https://www.ldi.la.gov/online-services/shop-your-rates/homeowners-comparison-guide. When speaking with insurance agents, be prepared to ask the right questions. Always ask for alternatives to what is quoted. "Can I get a better option? Can I get a static fee deductible or do I have to go with a percentage of the hurricane damage? What is excluded from coverage? What is the Additional Living Expense allowance under the policy in the event I am displaced? Is this covering Actual Cash Value or Replacement Cost of damaged property? Is mold covered?" A storm deductible typically ranges anywhere from 2%-5% of a home's total insured value - so if a home is insured for $200,000 and has a 5% deductible, the first $10,000 in repairs must be paid out of pocket by the policyholder. If you can negotiate a lower deductible for these occurrences, it may well be worth it. Both guests stressed the importance of reading your insurance policy. Familiarize yourself with the sections and what each cover. Insurance policy language is effective for one year at a time and changes are reflected in each one-year renewal period, perhaps causing you to experience changes in contractual terms that you may not desire. Most consumers never take the time to read their policy and are shocked when confronted with a damage claim that is not reimbursable or not reimbursed at the level needed to get back on their feet. It is critical to be proactive in understanding what your policy covers and take steps to add coverage if it is not initially offered. You can always purchase an endorsement or rider to expand existing coverage on things such as antique furniture, jewelry and other valuables. Keep up with the value of your home as it may be prudent to raise your coverage as real estate prices inflate. Ron Henderson says "You get what you pay for." Not meaning that the insurance company doesn't want to reimburse you, but "they will only reimburse you for what your policy covers." "Insurance companies want to pay their claims, what they owe you. They will never pay you more than they owe you.

Wendy Gilch wants buyers and sellers to know. Know what? Know everything about real estate and the intricacies of the industry, as well as the scams that can turn the experience from a dream into a nightmare. Frustrated by the process as a consumer years ago, Wendy set out to shed light on what is often a process that keeps consumers in the dark. Between referral services that claim to connect consumers with the “best” agents to companies that sell consumers’ info to agents, mortgage brokers, and others in the industry, most companies that make millions from the business of real estate by claiming to be helping buyers and sellers more often than not are doing just the opposite. Today, Wendy shared her frustrations, how her consumer advocacy site, Selling Later, works, why she decided to create it, and what she’s doing to help buyers and sellers learn everything possible to make educated decisions about one of the most important transactions of their lives.

This week, Jerry and Jody are joined by leading consumer advocate, India McKinney, to hear her views on the prospects for national privacy legislation and explore the increasingly important voice that consumers and their advocates have in shaping the debate about the content of legislation at both the state and federal levels. Among the issues discussed are whether a federal law should preempt state privacy enactments and the role that India believes private rights of action must play in the enforcement privacy laws as a supplement to the resources that state and federal authorities are able to assign. On the question of whether a national privacy law should cover industries like financial services and health, which already have long-standing privacy regimes, India expresses reservations, citing the difficulty of implementing new legislation that disrupts long standing, industry specific privacy regulation. India McKinney is Director of Federal Affairs for the Electronic Frontier Foundation based in San Francisco. Prior to joining EFF, India spent 10 years in Washington as a staffer for three members of Congress from California. Her passion has always been good public policy and she is excited to be using her skills in advocating for privacy rights for consumers. ***** Contact us: Jerry Buckley | jbuckley@buckleyfirm.com Jody Westby | westby@globalcyberrisk.com ADCG | info@adcg.org

Julie Kuzmic discusses mortgages and credit ratings.
Do you still use your listening skills when you are angry? Probably not, when we are angry the only thing we desire in that moment is to obtain what it is we are seeking. Do you ever feel rushed to purchase something? It bugs me to no end when I am looking for something, and the person selling the item lose the sale with me because they are in to big of a hurry to make a sale. A saleperson should make you feel valued, and appreciated before receiving your money. It is all a matter of Human Behavior, we naturally get turned off by pushy people in life, and business. Are you communicating your needs to the company you are in business with? Are you able to articulate what you are shopping for? These are key points in making sure your experience is an excellent one. The whole point behind these series of broadcast is to ensure consumers are armed with information, information, information. The more information you have before your shopping experience the better your outcome will be after the purchase. What are you doing to make sure you will be happy with the item you are purchasing? How many times have you purchased something, and had to take the item back to the store? If you did try to return an item did you have a hassle? As a consumer each and every one should receive what they have purchased. I detest when some one is being ripped off or cheated out of a product or service.

If you did try to return an item did you have a hassle? As a consumer each and every one should receive what they have purchased. I detest when some one is being ripped off or cheated out of a product or service. I strongly believe it is distasteful to price gouge a customer simply because they do not know that the service is really not as expensive as a salesperson make it out to be. If a company can sleep at night after ripping someone off I believe that company should go down in a blaze of flames. Do you believe you have been wronged? I seriously want to know about. I believe we should spread the word on companies, and salesperson who price gouge, let me know so it can be put on blast to warn other shoppers. Please feel free to contact us if you have had an issue with a company: thefiercefemales@gmail.com Also follow me on: Facebook at facebook.com/thefiercefemales, on twitter.com/thefiercefemales.

If you purchase a used car for $10,000 and the blue book value of the car is $7500 you have been ripped off. Just because someone does not know, does not give a company or salesperson the right to take advantage of anyone. This is where integrity and honest comes in the play. I believe we should spread the word on companies, and salesperson who price gouge, let me know so it can be put on blast to warn other shoppers. You certainly would want someone to warn you if a company is fishy or tricky? Well we are going to shout to the roof top about every company who is taking advantage of consumers. Seriously email thefiercefemales@gmail.com and let us know about the company and what happen to you so we can provide a service to other customers. Consumer Protection is always needed at every level. With so many people on the internet you better believe there are some folks around looking to hit you in the virtual head and take your money!! It pisses me off to the 100x power! I say let's blast, blast, and blast!!

What would you begin to think if a shadowy group of men began asking all of your co-workers and friends about your life, began tailing you and calling you at all hours of the night? Maybe an FBI sting? In the case of Ralph Nader, he was trying to advocate for auto safety when he became the center of a smear campaign directed by GM. This week's episode is a brief history of consumer advocacy in the US and a quick update on how consumer protections are being treated by our current administration.

Professor Sharon Kilbreath and Ms Sally Crossing have a lot of things in common, but perhaps the most striking is their refusal to accept the status quo. When both women were diagnosed with breast cancer over 15 years ago, they discovered a significant gap in the knowledge and understanding of life after surgery and a lack of a united voice for cancer patients. This spurred them on to become leaders in their respective fields of research and consumer advocacy. In this talk Professor Kilbreath will present her latest research findings which challenge current treatment practices and beliefs around breast cancer rehabilitation. She will particularly focus on lymphoedema, the painful chronic swelling of the arm or chest which can occur post-surgery. Ms Crossing will discuss her own personal journey, and her passion for influencing the influencers to make a difference for people affected by cancer. She will also reflect on the anniversary of 20 years of the cancer consumer advocacy movement in Australia. Professor Sharon Kilbreath is a Professor of Physiotherapy in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney and a National Breast Cancer Foundation Research Fellow. Sally Crossing AM is living well with advanced breast cancer, having been first diagnosed in 1995. She founded and chaired the Breast Cancer Action Group from 1997, and Cancer Voices, the generic voice of people affected by cancer, from 2000.
