Ep. 156 - Mental Agility at Any Age with Phil Holberton

She Talks Business

Play Episode Listen Later May 27, 2024 47:04

Be the Best You Can Be   Joining us this week on She Talks Business is a very special guest, Phil Holberton. He is an incredible example of how mental agility can help you overcome some of the biggest physical and mental challenges you face in life.    With many decades of specialized expertise in strategic planning, business development, operations, and executive coaching for senior executives, business owners, and CEOs, he has consistently stayed at the forefront of his field. He has successfully guided and developed senior management teams in various companies, a testament to his ability to drive organizational growth and success through effective leadership.   Stop Comparing Yourself After suffering from a massive seizure, Phil shares with us how he grew the most in his own mental agility. He went from doing basic stretches and needing help getting up and down from the floor in the gym to doing 90-pound weighted goblet squats in just five years.  His physical shape now is in the top one-half of 1% of people his age, but the way Phil achieved that is not by aiming to be in the top 1% but by focusing on being the healthiest version of himself he can be.    3 Steps to Better Mental Agility  Phil believes mental agility is preparing yourself to be the best you can be. You're setting yourself up to live your life well and handle whatever is thrown at you.  There are 3 things he does to be on his A-game: get enough sleep, eat well, and exercise.    Be Who You Want To Be  Habits and routines set you up for success and get you ready to face the day, but they also help you become who you want to be.  Mental agility is about mindset and how you react to different challenges and situations. Prepare yourself by adopting healthy habits for your body, and you'll achieve the mental agility you want in your mind.    We have a great discussion where we focus on continuing to learn and being open and vulnerable to grow as a leader and as a person. I know you'll find some great inspiration and takeaways from this episode, so be sure to share it on social media or with a friend!    What's In This Episode Managing sleep, diet, and exercise for mental agility Commitment to continuous learning and personal development Benefits of openness and vulnerability in peer groups Impact of personal attributes on leadership and performance Promotion of Positive Company Culture   What To Do Next Visit lisalarter.com/e156 for all resources from this episode.

Episode #98 Rhonda Holberton @rhondaholberton - Interdisciplinary artist and Professor of Digital Media @cadre_sjsu @SJSU Oakland-based artist and SJSU digital media professor Rhonda Holberton grew up in the Dulles Corridor, referred to as “The Silicon Valley of The East.” Holberton saw technology's impact on society at an early age. She recalls, “I watched farmlands get steamrolled over, and subdivisions pop up.” Holberton's work investigates technology, history, and modernity through research-based digital media and interdisciplinary art. In a piece entitled ‘The Best of Both Worlds' currently on display at The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, Rhonda created 3D scans of her body practicing yoga framed by a digitized desert. The piece contrasts peaceful yoga practice with 3D technology developed by the military while presenting the human form in a cyborgian context to expose a world where humans and technology are fundamentally intertwined. In our conversation, Holberton talks about her interest in engineering and its influence on her work, what it means to be a steward of creation and the digital world, and her moral obligation to "leave this place better than it was when she arrived." Catch Holberton's show at ICA San Jose until August 13th, and prepare to ponder the modern world and your role in it. @icasanjose ________________________________ #Content #contentmag #art #technology #engineering #atrificialintelligence #Sanjose #stanford #siliconvalley  --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/content-magazine/support

When Dusan Simien, a San Francisco native with a knack for technology, enrolled in a two-year coding program at the for-profit Holberton School, he financed it with an income share agreement: a contract in which he agreed to pay the school 17 percent of his income for a set period after graduation. But before long, Simien found himself struggling with Holberton's instructorless education model and its cheaply designed curriculum. And when he was expelled on a dubious charge of plagiarism, he found himself owing the school a percentage of his paycheck from the same job he'd had when he enrolled. Simien's case typifies a growing trend. As Avi Asher-Schapiro documents in the December issue, income share agreements (ISAs) have taken off in the past few years as a means of financing education, and they've caught the attention of policymakers—and investors—across the political spectrum. To their proponents, ISAs are an answer to traditional financing options that have left many poor Americans, especially African-American students like Simien, unable to attend college without taking on exorbitant debt. These financial tools could theoretically make institutions more accountable, by tying institutional profits to alumni success. To their detractors, ISAs can be predatory loans in disguise, ripe for exploitation by unscrupulous institutions such as Holberton. By tying contract terms to projected earnings, they also increase the pressure on students to seek careers that are likely to be financially lucrative. In this episode of the Harper's Podcast, Violet Lucca talks with Asher-Schapiro, who covers technology and human rights issues at the Thomson Reuters Foundation, about these and other hopes and concerns for the growing ISA market. They discuss the origination of the ISA idea by Milton Friedman, parallels between ISAs and the charter school movement, and the potential ramifications of “treating students like startups.”

On this episode Abadesi talks to Sylvain Kalache, co-founder of Holberton School, a project-based alternative to college where you can become a software engineer in two years. They have campuses in the United States and Colombia. Sylvain formerly worked at Slideshare and LinkedIn.In this episode they talk about...The story of founding Holberton and why a new type of school is needed“Some companies are tech and the ones who are not, are either becoming a tech company or they are going to die. Even a non-tech company, like healthcare, retail, media, transportation, you name it, they all need software engineers.”Sylvain talks about how they came up with the idea for Holberton and the experiences he had that convinced him of the need for the school. He explains how he and his co-founder decided to set out to fix those issues with Holberton. He says that many people he interviewed when he was working as an engineer had spent a ton of money on an education but didn’t have the right skills for the job they were applying for.How they designed their software engineering curriculum“It’s really hard in the first place to find a good software engineer, so it’s exceptionally hard to find a good software engineer who’s also a good teacher.”He talks about the hectic first year of working on the school and what it was like getting everything ready for the first cohort of students in January 2016. They needed to create a curriculum for their school and says that they relied on the community to help them figure out what to include in their education. He also points out that the world of software engineering moves at a really fast pace, so it’s important to have a curriculum that can be flexible and always up-to-date.How to find motivated and passionate people“Most of the people I would interview were right out of college and spent a fortune or took out huge student loans to take this training. They were not prepared to take on the job. They knew things, but not the type of skills that we would need from these people.”Sylvain talks about how to find motivated people in general, which is useful for both admissions at Holberton — when it comes to figuring out who to accept or not, as well as hiring at Holberton — because in the early days of the company it is difficult to match the perks that huge companies offer, so you have to find people who believe in the product or vision and have a lot of motivation and passion. He says that looking at someone’s side projects, blog, and GitHub can give you a good indication of how self-motivated they are.How they are working to increase representation in the tech industry“We gave a lot, as much as we could, not expecting something in return. The power of community is something that we find in Holberton in the learning methodology itself, where students are pushed to work in groups and where helping is not cheating, but helping is collaboration.”He says that admissions at Holberton are completely blind and that the system for admissions that they’ve developed is automated. He says that there is talent everywhere, but that a lot of that talent is missing the education, which is where Holberton comes in. He says that their program is comprised of half people of color and nearly half of their students are women. He says that they baked in inclusiveness into their philosophy and operations from the very first days of the company. We’ll be back next week so be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Breaker, Overcast, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. Welcome to The New Stack Context, a weekly wrapup of the hottest news in scalable IT development and deployment.  This week we're talk with Essence Boayue, a full-stack engineer in training at the Holberton School for software engineering, as well as Max Johnson, a former Holberton student who is now a DevOps engineer at conversational AI provider Pypestream.  Boayue and Johnson have been investigating the meaning of "cloud native DevOps" for The New Stack in a set contributed articles. Boayue's post discusses roles and responsibilities of cloud native DevOps engineers. And check back next Friday to read Johnson's post, to be posted next Friday, on how applications built to run and scale in the cloud need to be managed in a completely new way. We talk with Boayue and Johnson about their own DevOps journeys, what cloud native DevOps is and some of the roles and responsibilities of DevOps in building and maintaining cloud native applications. We also chat about the approach that Holberton takes in training the next generation of full-stack engineers.

Where can someone learn how to become a software engineer? Computer science programs at universities usually focus more on theory than on what's actually required to become an employable programmer—and then there's the matter of cost. The Holberton School offers an alternative: a two-year training program for software engineers where there are no formal teachers or lectures, favoring project-based learning instead. It's learning by doing, and it's one of a new breed of schools reinventing education.
