The idea of Indigenous Peoples Day originated in 1977, in Geneva, at the first International NGO Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the America. The conference was attended by Indigenous peoples throughout world and by the conclusion of the conference, a list of recommendations was drafted, outlining a course of action to support Indigenous peoples right to self-determination, a formal rebuttal was declared to Doctrine of Discovery or Dominion, and Indigenous peoples stated their intention “to observe October 12, the day of so-called ‘discovery' of America, as an International Day of Solidarity with the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas.” Thereafter in the United States, cities and states started observing Indigenous Peoples Day including for example, in 1989 South Dakota adopted Native American Day; on 10/22/91, the Berkely, CA city council adopts Indigenous Peoples Day. In the City of Los Angeles, CA, the city council declared the second Monday of October Indigenous Peoples Day and in 2019, CA Governor Gavin Newsom declared Indigenous Peoples' Day a California holiday. To date, it is estimated that a little over 150 cities celebrate or observe Indigenous Peoples Day out of 19,502 incorporated cities, towns, and villages in the United States. Presumably, in cities with large or semi-large Native American/Indigenous communities. At the state level, 28 states observe Indigenous Peoples Day, but only three states, Maine, Nebraska, and New Mexico deem it a state holiday. The Washington DC district also considers it a holiday. At the federal level, in October 2021, President Biden designated the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day and The Indigenous Peoples' Day Act (SB 2970) which if passed would replace Columbus Day as a federal holiday and designate the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples' Day was introduced in Congress in 2021 and reintroduced in Congress in 2023 with no traction since then. As of 2024, for the few cities and states that observe Indigenous Peoples Day with celebrations, they still acknowledge Columbus Day as the default, often, paid holiday. There are many contradictions to celebrating and participating in Indigenous People Day celebrations at the city and state levels and today on American Indian Airwaves we have a round-table discussion on what is Indigenous Peoples Day? Our discussion panel includes Fidel Rodriguez of Chumash Nation and host of the former KPFK Divine Forces Radio and Marcus Lopez, of Barberieno band of the Chumash Nation and executive producer and host American Indian Airwaves, and me. We will try to make sense of all of this today. Also, the UN is focused on other things today. Like protecting the rights of "trans lesbians." And today is Columbus Day, which the Left has tried to replace with Indigenous People Day. I will explain why Columbus is a great man who deserves to be celebrated and why Indigenous People Day is a laughable disgrace. Ep.1238 - - -  Click here to join the member exclusive portion of my show: https://utm.io/ueSEm  - - -  DailyWire+: Get your Jeremy's Chocolate here: https://bit.ly/45uzeWf Watch Episodes 1-7 of Convicting a Murderer here: https://bit.ly/3RbWBPL Represent the Sweet Baby Gang by shopping my merch here: https://bit.ly/3EbNwyj  - - -  Today's Sponsors: Birch Gold - Text "WALSH" to 989898, or go to https://bit.ly/3LjDxuA, for your no-cost, no-obligation, FREE information kit. Ruff Greens - Get a FREE Jumpstart Trial Bag http://www.RuffGreens.com/MattOr call 844-RUFF-700  - - - Socials: Follow on Twitter: https://bit.ly/3Rv1VeF Follow on Instagram: https://bit.ly/3KZC3oA Follow on Facebook: https://bit.ly/3eBKjiA Subscribe on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3RQp4rs

To celebrate Indigenous People's Day, I'm sharing the fantastic wisdom from the book Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. This is probably the most profound Zoonotable I feel I've ever done. I have always revered Native Americans for their relationship with the earth. But to be honest, I've never felt connected to their way of life. It was THEIR way, and while I feel more connected to nature than I do to say, a city, I just didn't feel I could practice the Indigenous principles. But with Braiding Sweetgrass, I feel as if I've been given permission, invited, and encouraged to let the traditions live on. Not to appropriate, but to revitalize a way of living that is pretty attuned with what I believe. The main idea Robin brings up AGAIN AND AGAIN is that of RECIPROCITY, the two-way relationship between people and the planet. Give, share, and connect. I loved this book so much and I think you will to, so let's dig in to Braiding Sweetgrass. Want to grab your own copy? In honor of Indigenous People Day, I share a synchronistic story that unfolded for me this past week. From the invitation of a wonderful shaman, Reda Rackley, I looked up the Native People of the land where I live. How wonderful to know the name Lenni Lenape, the peace-keeping “ancient ones”, the diplomats and mediators, who lived throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and southern New York. I highly recommend photographer, Lisa Levart's stunning exhibit at Bergen Community College, called “Women of the Ramapough Lenape Nation”. I am deeply moved by what Lisa created: a visual, visceral, soulful way to be in the presence of these inspiring Lenape people. Lisa's portraits and her husband Myles Aronowitz's video footage capturing Lisa in her creative process with the Lenape women is exquisite! I am so grateful to bring consciousness to the Lenape, the name of the people who lived, worked, played and partnered with this land before me. I invite you to discover and connect with the Native People of the area where you live. Know them by name as we honor all the sacrifices, wisdom, and gifts our indigenous people have to offer us. Check out the show notes for links to learn more about the Lenape, see the details of Lisa's stunning exhibit at Bergen Community College, which will be there through November 24th. They have retained social, cultural, economic and political characteristics that are distinct from those of the dominant societies in which they live.  Today, October 8, 2021, President Joe Biden, Jr. signed a proclamation for Indigenous People Day.  What is Indigenous Peoples' Day?  Itis a holiday that celebrates and honors Native American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: Pfizer or Moderna? It's the COVID-19 vaccine question more and more Canadians are asking themselves as the country adapts to being in the privileged position of having millions of doses of both flowing, compared to the vaccine scarcity of earlier months of the year. But anyone concerned that they should be weighing the two mRNA vaccines can rest assured — there's no wrong answer, and no benefit to shopping around for one versus the other. GUEST: Dr. Peter Juni, Director of Ontario's Science Table and a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Toronto - Ontario Premier Doug Ford has unveiled a major cabinet shuffle that removes several ministers and returns Rod Phillips to the front bench, in a reset that aims to inject more diversity into the Progressive Conservative government less than a year before the next provincial election. In the first significant revamp of his cabinet in two years, Mr. Ford removed five ministers from their roles while promoting younger members, women and people of colour, as the province looks to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. But in the key posts of education, finance, health and solicitor-general, the ministers remain unchanged. The biggest focus was on Merilee Fullerton's departure from the LTC file. Many are saying that was a long time coming, but her replacement is raising eyebrows: none other than Rod Phillips, making his return after stepping down in the wake of the scandal caused by his secretive trip to the Carribean last Winter. What are they thinking? GUEST: Laura Babcock, President of PowerGroup - It's National Indigenous People Day... It's no secret that museum collections have benefitted from the colonization of countries occupied by imperial powers such as Britain and France. But in recent years, spurred in part by the 2007 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), there is a global push to decolonize museums. And in Decolonizing Museums, Part 1, APTN Investigates takes a look at how that push is going in Canada – beginning with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR). In this episode we talk about why Columbus Day makes us feel icky and why we should all celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day instead.Today on the show we give a shout out to a famous colonizer, liar, thief, terrible geographer and genocider, who is so famous that he has his own b-list holiday…Christopher Columbus. As we dive into the shady history of Columbus Day, we start with some background history, spoiler New Mexico has a special connection to this. We start by briefly sharing our concerns with how schools approach teaching history, especially on this topic of Columbus. These concerns lead us into a short game of “Fact or Fiction”, where we question some of the historical “facts” about Christopher Columbus. If that wasn’t enough reason to object to Columbus wait until we read a section of his own diary! We then discuss issues of racial trauma and the negative impact this has had on Indigenous people, which leads into the topic on how we can start to “De-Columbus” our Columbus Day. In this section we urge people to not only learn, but to acknowledge the not-so-pretty history of this country. We then highlight what some states in the U.S. are doing to decolonize this holiday. Some states are choosing to recognize it as a day of mourning, while some are reclaiming it as a time to pay tribute to Indigenous people; our vote is for Indigenous People Day! We can’t forget to get mad at the internet today…we’re “playing” with dolls. Since we’ve been sort of mad most of the episode we need our HAPPY PLACE more than ever. For this episode, the title says it all. Indigenous People Day has been a time of deep contemplation since he read A Different Mirror. He actually didn’t finish, he looked at me with watery eyes and said he just couldn’t take another broken treaty and the book has been on the self since then. That was last year. This year we had a conversation that left us both speechless. A loose tooth brought a few giggles but mainly we processed hard truths together. History is a hard subject to teach but I find that advocacy makes the realities of history feel less hopeless.

In a change of pace with this first podcast episode of the second season, we feature an episode from old time radio, the CBS News Radio Series, You Are There. The docudrama is “Columbus Sailing to the Americas on October 12, 1492”. Created by CBS Radio, it blended history with modern technology, taking an entire network newsroom on a time warp each week reporting the great events of the past. The news reporters were the top national journalists from CBS. The series started in1947 and featured various key events in American and world history, portrayed in dramatic recreations. Additionally, CBS News reporters report on the action and interview the key people from each historical episode. An announcer would give the date and the event, followed by a loud and boldly spoken "You are there!" This radio show was an example of serious attempts during the early days of radio to be educational rather than only entertaining. The beauty of their show was they provided the voices and news commentary while your imagination created the visuals of the historic event and people. Since the voyages of Columbus 500 years ago, the historical investigation has led to much different interpretation of those events. This radio show presents only one viewpoint. I provide more PDF documents than usual for this episode. Two of them involve background on multiple voyages of Columbus and more information about the man. Three PDF documents represent different ways that Columbus is celebrated or reviled around the world. One is about Columbus Day and two others – Indigenous People Day and Native American Day – provide an alternative perspective by focusing on the people living in the Americas. I leave it to you to draw your own conclusions about the impact of the voyages. I am Peter Serefine and this is the Liberty Minute for Columbus Day, day 575 of 15 days to flatten the curve.Yes, I said Columbus Day.  Christopher Columbus challenged the science of the times and was right!  He did not fall off the edge of a flat earth.  A pioneer worth celebrating.Columbus's daring journey should be recognized as proof that science is never settled.  Science should always be questioned and challenged.  Anyone who says, "the science is settled" clearly does not understand the basic principles of science itself. To be fair, the indigenous people of the Americas deserve a  celebration too.  Maybe there should be a national Indigenous People Day, but it should not replace Columbus Day. Catch the daily Liberty Minute any time at Liberty-Lighthouse.comUntil tomorrow, protect your liberties.  Once they're gone there's no getting them back.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/liberty-minute-and-liberty-lighthouse/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
