Ephesians 4:29-32 “The Kindness that Gives Life”Summer Sermon Series: “Virtues that Keep Us Stable Leo Durocher is a name that will forever live in baseball lore. Durocher attained his fame as both a player and a manager and was enshrined for his accomplishments on the baseball diamond by being inducted in 1994 into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Nicknamed “Leo the Lip,” reporters could always count on Durocher for some offbeat quote they could use to generate fan interest in their regular columns. Some of Durocher’s quotes bordered on the religious, as in, “God watches over drunks and third basemen.” Some of them were anti-authoritarian, as in, “I’ve never questioned the integrity of an umpire; their eyesight? Maybe. But not their integrity.” And some of them were remarkably cutting edge, as in his response to a question on Jackie Robinson, the first black player in the major leagues: “I don’t care if the guy is yellow or black, or if he has stripes like a…zebra. I’m the manager of this team and I say he plays.” But of all the Leo the Lip quotes for which Durocher is famous, the one that stands out among the rest and has bled over into so many other areas in life where competition is the name of the game is his saying, “Nice guys finish last.” I remember when I first heard that Durocher quote as a young boy, I thought to myself, “I hope that’s not so. I hope nice guys can do better than that.” And now that I’m much older, I haven’t changed my mind one bit. I still am hopeful that nice people won’t find themselves consigned to the cellar. Because now more than ever, our society is in need of nice people to emerge and to make their influence known, especially in this day when it sure seems that little more than meanness abounds. It makes you ask the question, “Where is all of this meanness coming from?” A good place to begin is by connecting it to what the Bible calls sin, which is a deficiency all of us human beings share. That’s always why I have to chuckle when I’m watching the talking heads on television offering their commentary on the latest manifestation of meanness and when it comes to offering a way forward, one of them will say something along the lines of, “Now is the time for us to call upon our better angels,” as if all of the meanness that has afflicted our modern day is like a pair of pants we got dirty and simply need to change. Were it as simple as that – to be able to change our ways just as easily as it is to change our clothing. And yet, when you look at how at how the Apostle Paul called the church in Ephesus to offer its culture a transforming witness to what the power of the Holy Spirit might do in a person’s life, that’s precisely the image he employed to convey his message. He speaks of it as a change of clothing. Granted, Paul goes into much more detail than that in terms of how the Holy Spirit of God, through our faith in God’s gift of Jesus Christ, has “sealed us for the day of redemption” so that we find both the power and the motivation to take off one way one of living and relating to others in order that we might put on an entirely new set of attitudes and expressions that better reflect the presence of Jesus in us. Here’s how Paul phrases it in the twenty-second verse of this fourth chapter: “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; (in order) to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Here is the context. The church at Ephesus was a multi-ethnic, multi-racial fellowship, which stands to reason. Ephesus itself was something of a melting pot in the first century world, situated as it was at an intersection of major trade routes in the Roman Empire. As the book of Acts tells us, Paul’s message of Jesus Christ had reached both Jews and Gentiles in that community so that the church at Ephesus reflected the diversity of such a cosmopolitan city. But as we all know from our own experience today, our common confession of Jesus Christ doesn’t automatically translate into “the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Eph. 4:3). We have to work at forging deep connections with one another, lest we see our oneness in Jesus weakened by cultural differences and political differences and personality differences and all manner of other differences that are too numerous to name. And how do we best do that? According to Paul, we stay in touch with the grace that changed us from the hapless and hopeless people that we were to a people who, through Jesus Christ, have experienced a renewing presence that opens to us possibilities that we never would have known by ourselves. “Quit being so mean to one another,” is essentially what Paul says to the church. “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. (Instead) be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” The word for “kindness” Paul uses here is an interesting word. It means more than merely being nice to others. That’s how we normally define kindness. To say a person is kind is to say that he or she is nice. And while that’s not an untrue assumption, it doesn’t go far enough. According to Scripture, a kind person is a useful person, a person who serves a purpose. In other words, if all of those words Paul says that need to be expunged from our relationships with others because they make us what we might call today “dysfunctional” people, then our expressions of kindness toward others enable us to be the opposite of that, or “functional” in our dealings with one another. Is that how you characterize your relationships with other people? Are you able to cut others some slack when they disappoint you or deceive you because you know that deep down in your heart of hearts you have those same tendencies, which you are only able to keep under wraps because of the grace God showed you and continues to show you through your faith in Jesus Christ? You see, there’s something else in this passage that we don’t automatically recognize. The verb we normally translate “be” as in “be kind to one another” actually should be translated “become.” “Become kind and compassionate to one another.” In other words, this kindness requires a conversion, a transformation. Just as we change our worn and soiled and dirty clothes on an everyday basis, so must we rid ourselves of these natural human tendencies to wall ourselves off from others and to see them as threats and to show them contempt and disdain when they fail to live up to our expectations in order that we might grow into a divine, God-centered, Christ-honoring way of relating to others, one which is characterized by mercy and by grace, the same mercy and grace God showed us by accepting us through our faith in Christ. I don’t know if there has ever been a time when there has been so much meanness in the world. There probably has; it just seems that today there is more meanness than ever. But at the same time we see the meanness, can we not also see the tremendous opportunity we have to inject kindness into the culture so that in the midst of the meanness mercy might begin to do what mercy always does when it melts away the bitterness and rage and anger and converts it into something more purposeful, more functional? Some of you will remember when Southwest Airlines burst onto the scene. It was a time when competition in the airline industry was pretty fierce, and Southwest saw the chance to take what analysts have come to call a “blue ocean” strategy. Instead of circling the market with the other sharks in the same vicious ways, Southwest decided to do things differently, which in the beginning their competitors saw as quirky and offbeat, though they soon came to see it as transformational and began to adopt some of Southwest’s practices so that over the course of time Southwest Air ultimately changed the market. For example, Dustin and Caren Moore were on a Southwest flight home with their adopted baby girl, who was just eight days old. Midflight from Colorado to California, Dustin realized the baby needed a diaper change. So, a flight attendant led the couple to a space where they could care for their newborn. Nothing unique there; you would hope that any attendant on any airline would have done such a thing. The flight attendant then complemented the little girl and asked what had prompted a flight with such a young infant. The father told her story, as the mom was changing his daughter. It was a story that included nine years of fertility treatments and miscarriages and adoption stress. Five minutes later, after the couple and their daughter had returned to their seats, another flight attended came on the intercom to make this announcement: “Ladies and gentlemen, there’s a very special guest on our flight today. She’s only eight days old and she’s traveling home with her adoptive parents. So, we’re going to pass out some napkins and pens for anyone who might want to write a message for the new family.” Sixty notes were collected. One of them read, “I was adopted 64 years ago. Thank you for giving this child a loving family to be part of. Congratulations.” Dustin’s mother, the child’s grandmother, took the napkin notes and made them into a book so that couple could preserve the advice and good wishes to their daughter. Little wonder that Southwest Air has ranked as one of the most profitable airlines in the United States over the last decade. And even more, little wonder that other airlines have begun to adopt so many of their practices, which at one time seemed quirky and offbeat, but now, especially in this current climate, just seem to make good sense. What was it that Gary Shandling, the quirky and offbeat comedian, used to say? “Nice guys don’t finish last. Nice guys finish first. And if you don’t know that, then you don’t know where the finish line is.” OK; that approach may not get you into the Baseball Hall of Fame, but it is the only way any of us will expect to make into the Hall of Fame of Faith. For as any baseball fan will tell you, the real purpose of the game is to get around the bases and make it back home, which is, when you think about it, the same purpose to life. If a little kindness toward others will help make that happen, then so much the better. For in the end, not only will we win, so may everyone. By God’s grace in Jesus Christ, so may everyone. Ephesians 4:29-32

Welcome to my podcast Ethical & Sustainable Investing News to Profit By! for October 11, 2019—presented by Investing for the Soul. investingforthesoul.com is your site for vital global ethical and sustainable investing news, commentary, information, and resources. And, Google any terms that are unfamiliar to you. Also, you can find a full transcript, live links to content, and often bonus material to these podcasts at their episodes’ podcast page located at investingforthesoul.com/podcasts. Now to this podcast! ------------------------------------------------------------- Many of you have heard of Etsy, the online craft marketplace and perhaps wondered if it’s a good ESG stock. Well, Maria Gallagher says a resounding yes to that in an article on The Motley Fool site titled, ESG Investing: Is Etsy a Responsible Investment? She says, that, quote, “Etsy boasts more than 60 million unique items, 43 million buyers, and 2.3 million sellers on its platform… Etsy scores a 9 out of 10 on The Motley Fool's Framework for ESG Compounders… It is a strong company that appears to strive intentionally to make its marketplace the best it can be for purveyors of handmade goods. There are areas for improvement, but Etsy seems to be balancing profitability, scale, and strong ESG principles.” End quote. ------------------------------------------------------------- Another Motley contributor, Dan Caplinger reviews Southwest Airlines and finds it best in the airline sector for ESG practices. His piece is titled, ESG Investing: Is Southwest Airlines a Responsible Investment? Mr. Caplinger says, “Many environmental advocates view global air travel's enormous carbon footprint as needlessly wasteful.” But he goes on saying – and I quote, that, “Currently, Southwest helps travelers visit more than 100 destinations in the U.S. along with 10 countries internationally… and it’s No. 11 on Fortune’s list of the World’s Most Admired Companies in 2019… Southwest has embraced ESG principles throughout its history, even before most investors paid much attention to those concepts… it's hard to find an industry player that makes a better ESG case than Southwest Airlines… Southwest has put itself in position to thrive for years to come.” End quote. ------------------------------------------------------------- Turning to ESG bonds, we know that generally ethical and sustainable investing bonds are of high quality – and sometimes with even lower than average yields because of their great quality. Now we have a departure from that. Nuveen – which already has 9 ESG ETFs – is launching a below investment grade ESG bond fund. Andrea Riquier, in an article titled, The first-ever ESG junk bond ETF debuts, says this about the ETF, quote, “Investors are increasingly drawn to holdings that pay attention to ESG issues and financial-services firms are always on the hunt for new flavors of investments to offer. So, a new fund that seems to offer high yield as well as comply with ESG principles might seem attractive, even though it raises some questions about how appropriate it might be for investors.” End quote. Among the concerns for this type of bond are that the research into their credit-worthiness is often limited as well as the number of bonds that might fit the criterion for inclusion in this ETF. Nonetheless, it might appeal to those investors willing to assume somewhat greater risk for possible greater return on their fixed income portfolio, while still wanting it to be ESG-based. ------------------------------------------------------------- Will Ashworth, in an article titled, 7 Renewable Energy Stocks to Buy for Sunny Long-Term Returns, appearing on the Investorplace website, recommends some of the same stocks that have been covered here in previous episodes of this podcast. Here are the seven stocks he recommends, much abbreviated from his post, but using his words. Quote, “1) NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) Not only is NextEra Energy the world’s largest utility, it’s also the largest producer of wind and solar energy anywhere on the planet… [its] the company’s views on energy diversity that makes it an excellent long-term investment. 2) Brookfield Renewable Partners (NYSE: BEP). Brookfield announced that it had increased its ownership (with partners) of TerraForm Power (NASDAQ: TERP) from 51% to 65%… TerraForm Power generates 3,634 megawatts of solar and wind power around the globe… Brookfield Renewable worldwide has 843 renewable power facilities… capable of producing 16,300 megawatts of power annually… If you want to own more than renewable energy assets, you might consider Brookfield Asset Management (NYSE: BAM) which owns 61% of BEP and is one of the world’s largest alternative asset managers. If I could only own one company’s stock, Brookfield Asset Management would be at the top of my list. 3) TransAlta Corporation (NYSE: TAC). It could be better for U.S. investors to choose TransAlta Corporation as one of the best renewable energy stocks to buy rather than its 64%-owned renewable energy subsidiary TransAlta Renewables (TSE: RNW), which trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange… [Then he says] if you’re an aggressive investor, I’d go with TransAlta Renewables. 4) Enviva (NYSE: EVA) Eviva is the world’s largest producer of wood pellets… The pellets themselves are sold to utilities in the U.K. and Europe that use them in place of coal to produce a cleaner electricity source… If you’re an income investor, Enviva is a very safe way to meet your annual income requirements. 5) Renewable Energy Group (NASDAQGS: REGI) Whenever you see one of those trucks sucking out the grease traps at a restaurant, it’s going to one of Renewable Energy’s 13 biomass refineries to be turned into diesel fuel… The demand for biodiesel is tremendous… I believe REGI has got room to move into the $30s on rising demand. 6) TPI Composites (NASDAQ: TPIC) TPI Composites is the largest independent manufacturer of composite wind blades for turbine manufacturers… Last year, it announced a joint development agreement with Navistar International (NYSE: NAV) to develop a composite tractor and frame rails for a Class 8 truck… With margins moving higher, the profits will follow. 7) Siemens (OTCMKTS: SIEGY) This last one gives you exposure to a global industrial player in Siemens which, amongst its many ventures, owns 59% of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (OTCMKTS: GCTAF), the world’s largest producer of wind turbines and one of the interesting renewable stocks to buy without going all-in on renewables.” End quote. Incidentally, Travis Hoium has published an article in the Motley Fool titled, Why Solar Energy Stocks Are Dropping Like a Rock but he soothes his reader's worries by saying, and I quote, that “Investors are afraid of solar energy right now, but the long-term prospects of the industry are improving.” End quote. ------------------------------------------------------------- Continuing on the subject of renewable power, Maxx Chatsko says that wind power trends in the US and around the world have gained a certain level of maturity, and now some new perspectives come into focus. In an article titled, 2 Trends in Wind Power That Investors Need to Know About in The Motley Fool, Mr. Chatsko says, that “The American wind power industry is barreling toward an important inflection point. The production tax credit (PTC), which provides a subsidy for each kilowatt-hour of electricity g enerated from wind farms… is about to be phased out… The phaseout makes sense… [and that] investors interested in renewable energy stocks can't overlook the significance of these two trends reshaping the wind power industry…” End quote. Mr. Chatsko’s says the two big new themes at play are the repowering – or replacement – of wind farms and the recycling of old turbines. Two companies he recommends concerning these trends are General Electric (NYSE: GE) for new turbines and Trex Company (NYSE: TREX) for recycling. ------------------------------------------------------------- For faith-based investors, America’s Inspire Investing has launched a new international ESG ETF with the name Inspire International ESG ETF (NYSEARCA: WWJD). Quoting Tom Lydon, of ETF Trends in an article he wrote titled, Inspire Investing Launches Faith-Based International ESG ETF, he says, that, “With an expense ratio of 0.80%, the Inspire International ESG ETF is a faith-based ESG ETF comprised of 150 biblically aligned large-cap companies outside of the United States, as measured by Inspire’s revolutionary Inspire Impact Score methodology, which measures a company’s positive impact on the world… The new WWJD is comprised of 80% developed markets companies and 20% emerging markets stocks.” End quote. ------------------------------------------------------------- So, these are my top news stories and tips for ethical and sustainable investors over the past two weeks. Hospitality is the foundation of everything. The way you make people feel will always trump what you are actually able to provide; because chances are, people can find that “what” a bunch of different places. That feeling is what is going to set you apart. How is what you’re doing, the way you present yourself, and the way you interact with others affecting your personal brand? Is it something that you think about daily? Are you intentional about it?

Born in Brazil and raised in Utah, David Neeleman is an entrepreneur who has founded or co-founded five commercial airlines: Morris Air, WestJet, JetBlue, Azul Brazilian Airlines and TAP Air Portugal. Morris Air was acquired by Southwest Air in 1993. David served a mission in Brazil as a young adult and speaks Portuguese. He and his wife have ten children, including one they adopted in recent years. The Neelemans have 18 grandchildren. David was featured in The Mormon Way of Doing Business and in Flying High. Episode Highlights 1:00: Undistinguished academic background in high school and University of Utah. Has ADD. Served LDS mission during period of explosive church growth in Brazil in the late 1970’s. Sold Morris Air to Southwest when he was 33 years of age. Wanted to remain passionately involved in something of value and not simply be an investor. Highlights of his involvement with the airlines referenced above. 5:40: Impact of serving a mission and the necessity of faith combined with works. Witnessed the area of Brazil where he served grow from five branches to five stakes in a very short time. 7:18: Father of a large family. Advice he gives his kids as they go to serve missions: lose yourself, don’t think about home excessively and love the people. 9:20: Missionary success began to shape his life. Invented e-ticket travel and in-home reservations by people who are working from home. Is wired to see things differently and attempt what no one else has done before without being discouraged by naysayers. Being entrepreneurial requires making sacrifices. 12:48: ADD discussed, including the fact that children in same family can be very different from one another. Proper encouragement is needed. Some great business leaders have suffered from ADD. Street wisdom about A, B, C and D students. 15:58: How the egalitarian structure of the Church has affected his business approach to dealing with employees and providing customer service. His thoughts about executive lunch rooms and parking spaces. Impact of satisfied employees on customer base. Discussion about pleasing employees vs shareholders. 21:00: Establishing a healthy culture by leadership style in Church organizations. Helping people feel fulfilled and loved, not guilty. Prayerful thought is required. 22:40: Establishing and leading by values. JetBlue’s values. Breaking the china when necessary. 25:45: Serving as ward mission leader for about eight years in New Cambridge, CT. 26:25: More on vision and values—what would Jesus do in setting the tone in Church organizations. Church service a respite from the “belly of the beast” all week long. Keeping values at the forefront. 29:00: Making time for family, not golf. LDS leavening influenced is needed in the world. People respond to leadership that is inspired by gospel principles even if it’s not presented as such. 33:00: David’s preferences for books, especially books about world progress and development more than books about leadership. Some favorites, other than religious, are: Outliers, David and Goliath, Tipping Point, Accidental Superpower and books about founding fathers of the U.S.A. 35:20: Founding the More Good Foundation. Helping maintain a positive image for the Church. Buying URL’s so that people on search engines have positive encounters online regarding the Church. 41:22: Being a better follower of Christ by learning to know Him and gaining a testimony of the Book of Mormon. Don’t get caught up in the “noise.” The Lord needs LDS people to lead in society and business. Early in my career, I spent my commute listening to audiobooks in my 1996 Ford Taurus. The tinny car speakers shook as Tom Peters spoke about excellence and management by walking around. Through landmark books such as In Search of Excellence, The Pursuit of Wow! and his latest, The Excellence Dividend, Tom challenges conventional wisdom with an unparalleled bias toward action. I’m thrilled to share my conversation with Tom Peters on this week’s On Brand podcast presented by Twenty20. About Tom Peters Tom Peters is a leading business management guru and founder of the Tom Peters Company. He continues to be in constant demand for lectures and seminars. In 2017, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Thinkers50 and the Jack Covert Award for Contribution to the Business Book Industry from 800-CEO-READ. Peters is the bestselling author of seventeen books, including In Search of Excellence (with Robert H. Waterman, Jr.), which is often cited as among the best business books ever written. Arriving at an equally troubling time, his latest book, The Excellence Dividend, is a self-described “sequel of sorts” to this modern business classic. Episode Highlights Tom’s work has inspired me my entire career. But I had to ask … Why write another book? “There are significant consistencies,” Tom noted with what was happening when In Search of Excellence was first released and now. “And we still haven’t gotten it! Every 60 months or so, I’ve just had it up to my eyeballs and I sit down and write another damn book that says do your managing by walking around.” The Brand Called You at (Almost) 20. Tom’s landmark 1999 essay and book, A Brand Called You, offered the first-ever major work on personal branding. And it’s as true now as it was then. “Nineteen years later, it’s a survival necessity. You can no longer survive as #129 (on your employee badge). You have to be someone that stands for something.” We also spent some time talking about why personal branding is still misunderstood. “Hard is soft and soft is hard.” Tom offered his insights on the true nature of the key skills involved in business today. The hard stuff — numbers, for example — are really soft. And the soft stuff like culture is actually really hard. Business education today. Tom is on a quest. “I want the MBA to stand for a Masters of Business Arts.” Citing author and organizational effectiveness expert Henry Mintzberg, Tom noted that while MBAs are hired more and make more at graduation, 20 years later liberal arts grads have risen to more leadership roles. It was at this point that Tom complimented me for having a theatre arts degree! Tom and I may be sending Mark Zuckerberg a copy of The Darkest Hour. One of my favorite things about Tom’s writing and speaking, are the parallels he draws to great leaders in history. FDR and Churchill weren’t experts at economics and military strategy, but they inspired. They led. Zuck could learn a thing or two in navigating the current crisis at Facebook. What brand has made Tom smile recently? Like much of his thinking, Tom is in a class of his own when it comes to citing smile-worthy brands. While Apple, Nike, and Southwest Air are oft-cited, Tom provided the inaugural listing of Ziplock bags. They do everything — from keeping your iPhone safe to making a cool sound when you close them. You’ll never think of Ziplock bags the same way again! To learn more, go to tompeters.com or excellencenow.com. As We Wrap … Before we go, I want to flip the microphone around to our community … This week I want to give a shout out to the past guest who got the ball rolling on this week’s interview. “Consumers are human beings first.” Duh. Who needs to be reminded of this? I mean, we’ve got our big data, customer analytics, loyalty metrics, key performance indicators, demographics, psychographic profiles, and … Oh yeah. That’s why we need to be reminded that our customers are living, breathing humans. Luckily, loyalty expert Barry Kirk joined us this week to discuss neuroscience, gamification, and the changing world of customer loyalty. Enjoy this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast presented by Twenty20. About Barry Kirk Barry Kirk brings a decade of experience in customer retention and digital marketing to his role as VP of Loyalty Strategy for Maritz Motivation Solutions. In this role, he serves as the leader of the Maritz US loyalty practice. A sought-after speaker, blogger, and workshop leader, he has led the introduction of new disciplines like neuroscience and gamification to the loyalty space, and champions the belief that “consumers are human beings first.” Prior to Maritz, Barry led the consumer loyalty practice for Bunchball, a silicon valley tech startup focused on customer and channel engagement. Episode Highlights Loyalty today. “Loyalty really hasn’t changed much since the 1980s.” That’s when we began mercenary loyalty — rewarding loyalty, sometimes at great expense. It doesn’t work as well as it used to which is why we have to focus on … The modern forms of brand loyalty. “First there’s true loyalty — it’s literally the experience. Like Starbucks, there’s no reason to pay that much but you do.” The other form of loyalty is cult loyalty. This is based on connections to a group through your loyalty. Like Harley Davidson. “How easy does the brand make it for you to find other people? This is incredibly hard to disrupt.” The impact of neuroscience on marketing. Barry spends a lot of his time talking about the four-drive model of human behavior developed at Harvard. Basically, we have four main drives as consumers: (1) acquire, (2) bond, (3) create, and (4) defend. What’s one thing you can do to focus your own customer loyalty program? “Start with the consumer and what they want.” This too sounds simple, however, many businesses spend more time focusing on what they’re trying to sell instead of what their customers want. What brand has made Barry smile recently? It shouldn’t be a huge surprise that a loyalty expert pointed us to an airline — Southwest Air. “They’ve got me with cult loyalty — I have a personal alignment with them.” To learn more, go to the Maritz Motivation Solutions website and follow Barry on Twitter. Here are some of teh questions Pat answers today: How does a "Customer Experience" differ from Customer Service? What is a "Customer Experience Mindset" and what does this means in real life for an entrepreneur? What brands today understand this? I mean I think companies like SouthWest Air, Zappos, Ritz Carlton do. Why don't most companies work towards this? Does it cost more, involve greater training? Why not do this with all companies? Sounds like management needs to give up some control (and put it in the hands of the front line) to make this a reality, do you see it the same way?
