Episode 17 is with GetMeFit co-founders Jane Hart and Georgina Northern who are helping HR professionals improve their employees productivity and engagement though using their fitness and wellbeing platform We recorded this episode during mental health awareness week so started off with talking about the 5 ways to wellbeing as these tie in with their why and what they do: Connect Take Notice Give Be Active Keep Learning Being proponents of corporate well-being., I ask them what they think companies could and should be doing more to provide a holistic approach towards their employees. NHS estimates that obesity affects around 1 in every 4 adults and around 1 in every 5 children aged 10 to 11. These are quite alarming figures, so in their opinion I ask why they think it is a big problem and why being a social venture is so important. We discuss the biggest myths and best/worse parts of the profession Outro Quote - I'll leave you with a quote by Leo Tolstoy Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no-one thinks of changing themselves. John Helmer talks to Jane Hart, Founder of the Centre for Learning & Performance Technologies (C4LPT), whose Top Tools for Learning list, now in its 12th year, rates the popularity of various technology tools under categories of personal learning, workplace learning and education. The list has consistently highlighted the importance of generic tools such as PowerPoint, Slack and YouTube for learning online, and how big a part informal learning plays in complementing course-based materials. As such it paints a very different picture of the world from that purveyed by learntech vendors and analysts. John asks what this year's list shows in terms of long-term trends, as well as, inevitably, the effect of the pandemic on how people are learning. 01:31 What does the list say about learners' response to Covid-19? 05:08 The 'sub-lists': personal learning, workplace learning and education 09:20 Is learning too 'fuzzy' a word? 14:31 Why do learntech vendors score so low in the lists? 20:18 Can some of learning not be productized? 26:51 How to balance self-directed learning with the needs of the business 29:14 The biggest problem facing L&D today? 32:04 What is Jane most excited about for the future? Today's guest is the insanely courageous Jane Hart. Jane is a mother of two courageous boys, a forever student, and a passionate advocate. She also lives with Dissociative identity disorder, formally known as multiple personality disorder. Before starring in A&E's hit documentary series, Many Sides of Jane, Jane wrote articles and spoke out about childhood abuse and the normalization of mental health. She loves to spend her time hiking with her boys, reading, writing, and figuring out more ways to advocate for those who don't have a voice. Did I mention she's also from Boise, Idaho?!? My passion for mental health advocacy is real, so I had to shine a light on DID. According to the DSM 5, the defining feature of DID is the presence of two or more distinct personality states or an experience of possession. DID is associated with overwhelming experiences, traumatic events, and/or abuse in childhood. Why does this episode matter? Over 70% of outpatients with DID have attempted suicide, and other self-injurious behavior is frequent. In today's episode, we talk about: What Disassociate Identity Disorder (DID) is according to Jane (5:58) When Jane began to notice her parts (6:48) The pros and cons of DID (7:52) What parts are and the many parts of Jane (8:37) The movie that inspired Jane to share her story on A&E (14:58) How backlash has impacted Jane's life (16:37) What it's like to be a mom with DID (20:52) What it looks like to switch between identities (23:42) Jane's day to day life living with DID (26:31) What treatment looks like for individuals living with DID (28:08) Jane's advice to individuals living in silence with DID (34:53) Parenting tips if you live with DID and have kiddos (39:05) How Jane landed a documentary series on A&E (40:40) I can't wait to hear your feedback on this episode! If you want evidence that learning and development is thriving, come and listen to Learning Uncut because we share stories every fortnight about learning professionals out there, taking the risks, doing good work, being really progressive. I think there's this re-imagining of learning in organisations, and it's definitely underway. In this episode, we host our lovely guest, Jane Hart, from the A&E docuseries “Many Sides of Jane”. In the interview, Jane shares her experience of diagnosis, finding a therapist, and learning to work together as a system. She tells the story of how an article she wrote led to the docuseries, and what filming and post-production were like for them. We find out we have some things in common, and talk about parenting with DID. She also shares her perspective about what all therapists need to know! Jane then shares a trigger warning for the upcoming episode five of her show, and about the season finale Tuesday night. Abuse is mentioned in this episode as context for trauma and DID, but no specific details or memories are discussed.

This week, we dedicate the entire show to community questions about training. Guest: Bonni Stachowiak (@bonni208) Question from Jordan I am a young manager (mid-20’s). My job requires training large amounts of staff on software and technology. Many of the staff are twice my age, and tend to ignore me when giving trainings. I’m, not sure if this is because of my age, or because I have only been with the organization for 5 years, and many of them have been here for 20+. Or perhaps it is because of the subject matter of the trainings? Do you have any suggestions on how to get through to them? Is it content or credibility? Seven Principles for Leading People Older Than You [episode #59] Seek out people who are giving you objections and find out how to best serve them. Dave mentioned How To Win Friends And Influence People* Lynda.com* is a good solution for learning popular software online at your pace Adobe Captivate is a good option for creating your own simulations Screenflow for the Mac is great for screencasting Camtasia is another option 2nd Question from Jordan Do you have any suggestions on conferences one can go to, to expand skills on leadership and coaching? Bonni says a conference is a place to build a network, generate new ideas, and learn about new products Dale Carnegie Training provides a great resource for changing behavior, which is a great way to get better and leadership and coaching Question from Kris I am a manager in a large company and managing a global transformation programme. I am at a cross roads and my development plan includes getting more training on the following: (a) Leadership of global teams (physical and virtual) and (b) Strategic planning and organizational development (how does one define and develop a global organization, roles, numbers of people, strategy, governance, teams, processes, etc) to implement a global transformation programme. Do you have recommendations on books, education or coaches for my further development? Good to Great* by Jim Collins Execution* by Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan The Fifth Discipline* by Peter Senge Coaches: Bill Bliss, Tom Henschel, Pam Fox Rollin but find someone who’s done what you’ve done and what they’re reading Question from Suzie Audio comment If you are a nurse or know one, check out OneLoveforNurses.com Jane Hart publishes the Top 100 Tools for Learning Poll Everywhere is used by Bonni in her classroom Question from Andres In a world of free online courses and MOOCS (Massive Open Online Course); what type of course would you be willing to pay for? What type of content/delivery would definitely be worth spending your (not your employer’s) money on? Bonni mentioned attending a class from Linda Krall on creativity Dave spoke about Michael Hyatt’s class of 5 Days To Your Best Year Ever Question from Elmer How do you make training accessible to the newest employee while bringing something to the table for the most experienced manager? I usually try to leave the conversation open for the subject matter experts in the room to share their knowledge (within reason and on topic) so there is a feeling of collaboration and not speaking down to them in those situations. Creating a course that is comprehensive is difficult. Dave suggests segmenting the training, if possible. How can you get the subject matter experts engaged in a leadership capacity in the classroom? Use a problem-based or case study approach. This engages the more knowledgable people in the room. 2nd Question from Elmer One of our bosses/stake holders wants us to make our classes archiveable or semi-future proofed so we do not have to constantly go back and re-teach the classes one on one. What are some of the best ways to do that? “If the recording of the class was the equivalent to being there, then why are you holding the class in the first place?” -Bonni
