For over 20 years, Debbie Carter has been working at industry magazine Training Journal, tracking the changes that have taken place in our field – and occasionally railing against them! In this week's episode of The Mind Tools L&D Podcast, she joins Ross G and Owen to discuss: · the state of L&D in the early ‘noughties' · the big changes that have shaped our profession · the constants that have remained the same. You can check out Training Journal at: trainingjournal.com/ You can read Ross's TJ article, on learning campaigns, at: trainingjournal.com/2023/education-and-skills/if-learning-matters-make-it-a-campaign/ In what is surely our best-researched (and least interesting) ‘What I Learned This Week', Owen revealed the quick-drying properties of microfiber towels from the company Dock & Bay: uk.dockandbay.com. That's not an affiliate link, just an excellent way to dry yourself quickly. You're welcome! Ross G discussed, perhaps with greater relevance to our audience, the language that we use to discuss AI. If you're looking to take your running to the next level, strategic use of a training log can help you get there. Using a journal to collect your thoughts, plan your goals, and analyze your short and long-term training can provide unique insights to improve as a runner. With that in mind, this week's podcast is a special edition to introduce something I have been working on over the past nine months. Strength Running's own running log - The Performance Training Journal - is now available! The power of reflection is real. While an electronic log on Strava can store your mileage and splits, it doesn't encourage any interaction or reflection. There is little opportunity for growth. While a pencil and paper log may sound archaic these days, the simple act of writing and reflecting has more power to improve your running than any app. If you aren't logging the details of your training, you're missing an opportunity for improvement. This edition of the podcast is meant to help you understand the value of a journal and learn how the Performance Training Journal has been created and refined to help you get the most from your running. You'll learn how our journal can help you... Focus on the most useful training metrics Approach your training to continue improving Gain a better understanding of your body's capabilities and limitations Find confidence leading into a key event Learn about strength training, injury prevention, race planning and more Get started with the Performance Training Journal today! Join host Michele Forto as she talks about to use a dog training journal on this episode of Dog Works Radio. If this is your kind of journaling too, it doesn't have to be set up like a personal diary, with a daily log of your K9 Buddy's activities. There are all kinds of other things you can write about. What did they do that made you laugh today? What's their personality like? What are their favorite treats and toys? How do they greet you at the door? Do they love to exercise or are they one of those dogs that you must drag around the block? Why are you grateful for their companionship?

Jen began running during her weight loss journey half a dozen years ago. She previously only ran from base to base as a varsity softball player and loathed running. But thanks to her friends and a supportive network, she ran her first 5K. Today is day 1 of my 2022 freediving season. It's been almost two weeks since the Freediving World Cup competition, which marked the end of my 2021 season, and now I'm excited to apply all of the new insights I've learned throughout this year. Today I begin base training, starting with a swimming training session, designed by my coach Florian Dagoury. This training is aimed to stretch the ribcage, train the muscles to use O2 slower with less lactic, providing a mild CO2 workout. I like it because it also gets you super fit!! Go to reneeblundon.com for the swim training program and show notes. Today's episode is about the genetic profile test report for my 4-year-old foster horse, Doc Gunner. We have no history on this horse prior to December of his 3-year-old year. Given that we know nothing about this horse's breeding or history, it was important to me to get as much data as I could so I can more effectively give him the rehab and training he needs to be successful for the rest of his life. I'm really excited to have two expert guests in the field of genetic testing and equine veterinary medicine, Christa Lafayette, founder and CEO of Etalon Diagnostics, and Dr. Ben Buchanan from the Brazos Valley Equine Hospital. Join us as we review the full genetic report on Doc Gunner and his unusual genetic traits. We'll get answers to some medical questions we've had, and how we'll manage this horse going forward. Plus, we'll talk about his unique temperament and character, how that relates to his performance potential, and how that is evident in his genes. In this podcast Krystyna Gadd talks to Harriet Bell, Marketing Director from Emerald Publishing, about what their marketing department needs from Learning and Development. What's great about this interview (in my opinion) is that in the last section, Harriet's view exactly fits with my own about what we need to be doing: close partnerships with the business, focussing on problem area and performance opportunities, and co-creating content to fit their specific needs and circumstances. Harriet Bell has worked in academic publishing for over 20 years, and is now a Board member for Emerald Publishing which is an independent social science and humanities publisher. Harriet is responsible for global marketing and product development for Emerald at a time of exciting opportunity and change, moving towards innovative content formats to more broadly communicate research findings, supporting open science and above all looking at the role publishers can play in supporting research impact. In this episode I speak to Kevin M Yates and Krystyna Gadd about how learning and development needs to align itself to business needs and focus on performance improvement – using data, or “facts” as Kevin calls them – if we, and our Learning and Development brothers and sisters, are to thrive and make a real difference! Krystyna Gadd is a leading authority on accelerated learning and its application in the UK. As an engineer in a former life, it has shaped her thinking towards creating learning that creates measurable performance impact. She has been training trainers since 2008, through CIPD professional programmes and her own workshops. She has published a book “50 ways to Accelerate Learning”, which expands on her “5 Secrets of Accelerated Learning” that she shared in the Training Journal article “Quick off the Mark”. Both these publications help to dispel some of the myths surrounding accelerated learning. There are 5 broad areas or “secrets” to accelerated learning, that Krys shared in a recent article called “Get up to speed” that appeared in the Training Journal in 2016. Krystyna is the founder of How to Accelerate Learning and creator of The Learning Loop® a brand new and innovative way to train trainers, facilitators, subject matter experts and line managers. If you want to get in touch or just see some of the stuff Krys gets involved with, then you can contact her, look at her website, read her blog or view some of her short and snappy videos on YouTube Kevin M Yates is a Learning & Development detective and just like Sherlock Holmes, he solves mysteries. The mystery he solves is, “Did training work?” He uses facts, evidence and data to show training and learning’s impact on behavior, performance and goals. His work is global and multi-industry. He’s served in a variety of roles across training, learning and talent development which guides and informs his perspective and actions. Kevin’s guiding principle is, “Find one thing about a person’s behavior or performance you can attribute to training or learning and let that lead to the facts about impact.” Kevin is current the Learning Technology Manager at McDonald’s Visit Kevin’s website and connect on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram

In the past, teachers were responsible for “reading the room” and “getting a feel” for how learners were responding. But todays technologies help us discover more about them through their digital body language. Digital Body Language is more than just how you look on your webcam. That’s analog body language as seen through the webcam lens…and it’s important. But did you know that everything you do online tells us…them…someone… a little more about you and what your needs are, or might be? This has been the realm of digital marketing for decades, but it’s important to instructional designers as well. The learning experiences we create are part of a larger learning experience for the user. They may attend a virtual classroom session, take a self-paced eLearning course, and consume short videos to refresh the learning. And they’ll also be joining communities and chatting with peers about the same content. All of those contribute to learning and using analytics we can use data to discover what they need. Jo Cook is a speaker, instructional designer and classroom facilitator who specializes in virtual classrooms, webinars and live online learning technology. Jo’s passion is in helping and supporting teams, professionals and organizations embrace the benefits of the virtual classroom. Both these publications help to dispel some of the myths surrounding accelerated learning. There are 5 broad areas or “secrets” to accelerated learning, that Krys shared in a recent article called “Get up to speed” that appeared in the Training Journal in 2016. A few months ago we chatted with Krystyna Gadd about her Five Secrets of Accelerated Learning, and then we talked about the first of those secrets in What's your objective. In this latest podcast we drill down into the second secret: be a facilitator and not a trainer. This is about moving away from being the font of all knowledge, the sage on the stage, to being a guide on the side who is in charge of creating an environment and ensuring an engaging process so that learning happens. Accelerated learning is a term that is oft heard, but not oft understood, and even less oft applied effectively. It's not just about playing some music, putting a load of fiddly toys out, and then forcing delegates to flip chart stuff for hours, there's more to it than that. In this episode, I talk to accelerate learning expert Krystyna Gadd about her five secrets of accelerated learning: five areas that need to be considered to ensure that a learning event takes full advantage of all the benefits that accelerated learning can bring. The only problem is that we went on too long, so I decided not to inflict an hour-long podcast on the poor listener, and instead split it into two halves.
