"If you're confident that you've done your very best, then you can't do anything better than your very best."  It's been nearly two years since Jeff Noel joined for a conversation. We dove deep into the five quotes I tell myself every day to stay focused and motivated. There are a number of ways that these reminders can aid professionals in both their personal and professional lives. Read my blog or take a listen to learn more about my five quotes. I keep five notecards on my desk, each with a quote to help me keep my focus where it needs to be.  I replace two or three of those cards each year with new quotes. When I start the year with new quotes, I do an episode of The Jody Maberry Show with Jeff Noel to share the five quotes.  Here are my five quotes for 2023: "Trade your expectations for appreciation." - Tony Robbins "Do your best and forgive yourself." - Admiral Payne "This is a wonderful day. I've never seen this one before." - Maya Angelou "Don't get ready. Be ready." - Lee Cockerell "Happy present moment." - Jeff Noel In 2023, I choose quotes to help me focus more on today. I want to enjoy today more, give attention to priorities, get ready, and use today as best I can. So I selected quotes to remind me to stop getting distracted by what might happen tomorrow and enjoy today. Everything I need, I have with me today.  I've been doing the Five Things I Say to Myself cards for several years, which has worked well for me so far as it helps me give attention to what I think I need to work on this year.

Jeff Noel is an establishment here at the Jody Maberry Show. He is also a talented podcaster in his own right. After celebrating 100 episodes, he is sharing his wisdom on the process of wrapping up his first show, If Disney Ran Your Life. From recording the first episode in Kuwait City to being on-site in Glacier National Park, one thing that has been foundational for If Disney Ran Your Life is intentionality. From time frame to topics, Jeff had a clear vision of what he wanted the show to be.; this allowed him to stay the course and not let habit or comfort tempt him to take it further than planned. Another remarkable strategy that Jeff put in place is intentionally not dating the conversations with current events. Not only has this allowed If Disney Ran Your Life to be focused and a consistent beacon in an ever-changing environment, but it has also allowed it to rise and be relevant today, tomorrow, and for years to come. The growth that Jeff found along the way has allowed him to transition this amazing show from actively recording to continuously relevant. Hopefully, in the future, we might even see a book of the same title. My guest today is Jeff Noel, a 30-year Disney veteran with over a decade of experience teaching at the Disney Institute. We are discussing practical tips for new speakers based on observations from past Podcast Movement keynote presentations. As we discuss, there are many best practices in the world of public speaking. Some of the lessons we explore include vetting material in advance, giving the audience renewed hope, and relating to the crowd. With years of experience, Jeff shares in detail the ways he's matured these approaches from on-the-spot audibles on stage to preserving stage authority. In any scenario, the key behind any tip is helping the audience come away with something. Whatever you do in practice or in the heat of the moment, act as if you've been there before. When you have invested time, money, or hope into something, how do you know when it is time to turn around? Jeff Noel says it takes practice. You need experience before you know when you should turn around.  Experience also helps you realize when you should say No. Saying no is a good time management tool. And it can help you not sink too much time into something you wouldn't be able to stick with.  This episode will give you some consideration of knowing when it is time to turn around and walk in a different direction.

How do you remain in the present moment when responsibilities start to pull at you? Jeff Noel and I are on a final day in Glacier National Park. We are recording from a beautiful location, and I already start feeling drawn to everything I have to do.  Instead of focusing on the beauty in front of me, I am thinking about driving home. I am thinking about all of the work I have to do once I get home.  Jeff and I discuss how we can remain in the present moment when other responsibilities start to pull at us.  Just like most things you are good at, it takes practice.  Jeff explains one of the keys is recognizing you are being pulled out of the present moment. Then you can ask yourself if you can let off the gas.  One way to help you remain in the present moment is to add some margin in your schedule. That way you have less to worry about if something gets in your way and causes a time delay.

Jeff Noel and I are deep in the wilderness of Glacier National Park. After recording an episode of If Disney Ran Your Life, it prompted us to stop and record this conversation about being all in.  Being all in, reaching for excellence, can leave someone burnt out. Knowing no matter how good you do, you can always do better.  Aim for perfection and settle for excellence. Always set the bar high.  If you set the bar high and don't make it. You at least know you did your best.  If you set the bar low and make it. You will always have to live with the regret of never having known what was possible.  No breakthroughs happen from people doing average work.  If you want to have an impact you have to go all in.

Jeff Noel is with me again today to continue our discussion and introduce the five new things that I am telling myself every day in 2020. Last time, we laid to rest sayings and questions that I have used daily for years. Entering 2020, I wanted to think differently about the year.   Today we are examining my daily exercise and meditations on excellence, gratitude, thankfulness, appreciation, and ownership.   By defining what excellence is in the short term, we know how the whole of a project or situation will play out. By allowing ourselves to embrace enough and be thankful, we can experience the fullness of life. Through understanding our follow-through is not dependent on other's feedback, we can overcome discouragement, which can allow us to appreciate what we encounter, rather than set ourselves up for unmet expectations. Lastly, by embracing ownership, we remove the limit of waiting for someone else to fix something or make a change. Even amid failure, we can move forward and do better. As Jeff likes to say, be amazed and be amazing.   What quotes or sayings inspire you? DM me on Instagram or go to jodymaberry.com and reach out.

Jeff Noel returns today to join me as I lay to rest my five daily sayings. Every day, there are five sayings/questions that I meditate on to help me create a successful frame of mind. When we want to do what we have never done, we must think differently than we have. So, in preparation for stepping into a new season, I want to visit these sayings for a final review.   Jeff and I discuss the concept of ‘rest being a weapon' and the advantage it gives you over any adversary. We examine the benefit of asking ‘what does this make possible' when you suffer loss. We look at the pro's and con's of ‘do the one thing'. We also consider what it means to ask yourself ‘what is it for' as a means of keeping yourself on mission. Lastly, we unpack the benefit of reminding yourself to ‘do your best and forgive yourself'.   Words are very powerful. A slight change to a word can affect the whole manner with which we approach something. In the next episode, I will share what 5 new things I will be saying to myself every day.

Feedback is a tool for excellence.  If you have a clear understanding of where you want to go, one piece of feedback could be the spark you need to make a change that moves you closer to excellence.  Jeff Noel reminds us, the only way you can succeed is if you are willing to fail. Whether you know it or not, and whether you like it or not, other people are telling a story about you.  Here is an example, when my wife and I went out for dinner, we ran into a friend. Just the night before, we saw our friend's boss at an event.  When I mentioned seeing her boss, my friend said. "He's not a fan of people." Whether he knows it or not, this is the story his employees tell about the boss when he is not around. He is not a fan of people. Here is what you have to understand about the story people tell about you...there is an onstage story and a backstage story.  Backstage is your co-workers, your family, and your friends. People who know you when you are not performing.  Onstage, which includes social media and other parts of your story actively in front of people, you can craft a story that looks good. But what about people who know you when you are not performing. What do they say about you when you are not around? What if you found out people were saying something about you like you are not a fan of people? Is that the story you want to be told? Jeff Noel joins me to discuss how you can help shape the story people tell about you.  Jeff reminds us, the essence of you or your brand, is the first thing that comes to mind when someone says your name. If what comes to mind for people is out of alignment with what you want them to think, you have some work to do.

Thinking Differently to Do the Impossible with Jeff Noel Jeff joined us on a previous podcast episode (First Noel) at the end of 2018.  It's April 1st, and Jeff is back to help us think differently and do the impossible. Embrace the freedom of April Fools day to challenge your thoughts, push your limits, ask questions, and do the impossible. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. Questions Addressed What does it mean to Think Differently to Do the impossible? Why do we struggle with doing the impossible? How often is Jeff trying to do impossible things? Does Jeff design space during the day to address the impossible? Where does Jeff go for Inspiration? How can you overcome external obstacles? Where does journey play a role in thinking differently and doing the impossible? What questions can we ask to help us think differently to do the impossible? Key Takeaways Thinking differently is about Envisioning a future that is much better than now. Move in the direction of that impossible dream Impossible is not something that "no one" has done, it is something that you have not done. Sometimes self-doubt gets in the way.  Don't let that script get in the way. Waiting, and doing nothing are the twin siblings of self-destruction. Do the work one step at a time, one day at a time. Jeff thrives on three things. Taking Risks Thinking Differently Envisioning a future much better than now Jeff goes to bed knowing what the first couple of hours of any day are going to look like. Take the day, or evening before, to map out how the day is going to unfold. It is through our rituals that we develop habits. Michael Eisner - A Work in Progress. All of us are a work in progress. Be motivated by a vision of the future that is much better. The future is going to be worth it. 2008/09 - "I should have a plan B" - Jeff. Take the time to self-reflect. The bad things can be a catalyst, a nudge, a wake-up call. Latch on to your dreams. This stuff is hard - push through. Get uncomfortable - you will have to be uncomfortable to do your own impossible. "Comparison is the death of joy" - teacher quote Jeff's Hack for this - follow, read, listen to the stories of people who are the most unlikely candidates for doing something great. It all happens with one step - the first step. One day at a time. This takes time though, it is hard work. Ask this question - How can I be the best (insert thing you want to do) that I can be? Know what your expertise is, know where your experience is. Take risks, test, iterate. "Teach is to learn twice" - Jeff Noel Know your blind spots. Do the work for you, and the people that you serve. It is a journey, if you look too far ahead, you may neglect the small victories you can achieve every day. Be the best "you" that you can be. Identify what feels like you get to do it, not have to do it. Ask this question - What do I get by not changing? Start small, stay at it. Launch, learn, revise. Did it get better, did it stay the same, did it get worse? Brandon and Jerry talk with podcast producer Jody Maberry as he reflects on how working with Lee Cockerell to produce the podcast Creating Disney Magic changed his life. Meeting Lee CockerellReaching out to Lee Cockerell may have been the biggest leap of faith Jody Maberry had taken early in his podcaster career. At the time, Jody was finding traction and success with the Park Leaders Show influencing park rangers to improve how they led in our nation’s parks. He served as a co-host on the Starve the Doubts podcast for a few episodes, and left shortly after a Nutella incident. That’s when he decided to go for it.The Disney way of doing business and customer service fascinated Jody. Lee Cockerell had just gone into retirement after many years serving as a Walt Disney World executive. Lee is the man who opened Disneyland Paris and implemented many changes we see today in how Walt Disney Resorts are operated. In our episode this week, you’ll hear about how Jody reached out to Lee, and the surprising discussion that ultimately led to the start of the popular podcast called Creating Disney Magic which focuses on success in your personal career and delivering top notch customer service. How Creating Disney Magic Opened DoorsAs Creating Disney Magic gained momentum, both Lee Cockerell and Jody Maberry experienced doors opening for them they could not imagine. The world craved learning about Walt Disney leadership philosophies and practices.Lee and Jody have expanded the reach of Creating Disney Magic to include speaking engagements that now include Jody on the stage!Books have been published under the banner of the show such as Time Management Magic, which helps readers apply the skills used by Lee Cockerell to make the most out of a day. Jody Maberry is the narrator for the audio version of Time Management Magic.A spinoff show recently launched with Jody Maberry working alongside Lee’s son, Dan Cockerell. Dan is another former Walt Disney leader sharing his insights on the Disney way of leadership. That show is called Come Rain or Shine with Dan Cockerell. The title is derived from how Dan’s executive assistant was empowered to kick him out of his office rain or shine every day so he could connect with Disney Cast Members. The latest show from Jody Maberry is a joint venture with another former Disney leader, Jeff Noel who enjoyed a 30-year career with Walt Disney Company. That show is called If Disney Ran Your Life applying Walt Disney leadership principles to your personal life. It’s about how to create Disney magic in your own life!About Jody MaberryJody Maberry (aka Sugar Jay)Jody Maberry is a marketing consultant, copywriter, and customer experience strategist, known as the Business Ranger. He spent several years as a park ranger, studying the reasons why parks are some of America’s favorite places. As a park ranger, he was deliberate about helping people create a story worth telling. Jody now helps businesses and individuals gain an outside perspective. He is the host or producer of eight active podcasts and runs a profitable business in the podcasting space. Jody’s work helps others brand, package, and deliver their message to a world that needs to hear it.Jody’s most notable work in podcasting include “The Jody Maberry Show” where he shares insights on branding, customer service, and on being a small business owner, and “Creating Disney Magic” which focuses on the career and customer service wisdom of former Walt Disney World and Marriott Hotels executive Lee Cockerell.Links and ResourcesListen to the original appearance by Jody Maberry on the show, BtR 027Listen to our interview with Lee Cockerell, BtR 072Listen to our interview with Dan Cockerell, BtR 147Listen to Creating Disney Magic with Lee Cockerell (Apple Podcasts, Stitcher)Listen to Come Rain or Shine with Dan Cockerell (Apple Podcasts, Stitcher)

Jeff Noel joins me on this episode of The Jody Maberry Show to ask me three questions.  Here are the questions Jeff asks: Why did you drive a day and a half round-trip to go to Glacier National Park? Jeff Noel asked me to meet him at Glacier National Park. It was an offer I couldn't refuse. In total, I spent more than 30 hours on the road driving to meet Jeff. Time is the most valuable gift you can give to someone. Especially if it is not easy time to give. What's our most impossible dream? At the moment, I don't have an impossible dream. But just a few years ago, I would have thought what I get to do now is impossible. So I know the impossible can happen, I just haven't set my sites on one big dream. What do you love about being a parent? The long term project of watching all the work you put in help kids develop into humans. Jeff Noel even snuck in an extra fourth question. You will have to listen to the episode to find out what it is, though. If you enjoy hearing Jeff on this episode, check out his new podcast If Disney Ran Your Life.

Regaining Momentum and Kicking off the New Year - Again Executing on Your Objectives - This week on the Catalyst Sale Podcast we discuss maintaining focus on your goals in the New Year, at a time where you might be losing momentum. Momentum may have faded, you may have already decided to wipe the slate clean.  It's February - get refocused, and start executing. Thank you for sharing the Catalyst Sale Podcast with a colleague.  Please let us know how you apply the concepts and tactics discussed in this episode, via twitter, facebook or LinkedIn. Questions Addressed Why do we struggle with execution? Do you set larger goals? How does fitness goals relate to executing professional goals? How can we improve on execution? Key Takeaways Start with one thing. We tend to overcomplicate goal setting, trying to accomplish too much. If you can execute on the first goal, then establish two more. Push your capacity to the limit, then determine your actual capability. There are always some larger overarching goals. However, there still should be some smaller, more short term objectives that help keep you on track. Jeff Noel discusses goals and focus on this episode of the Catalyst Sale Podcast Tactical things you can do to get closer to executing on your goals. Be realistic Deconstruct success - break things down 1st establish goals 2nd establish measurements 3rd identify tools Reevaluate your KPIs often - Measure what matters Think of daily, monthly, quarterly measurements and guideposts Establish step goals Let's say we set a goal to lose 12 lbs in a year. Break this down to 1 lb a month .25 lbs a week Factor in the seasonality Design for the changes Application to sales - think about your daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly goals - Are you creating the number of opportunities necessary to hit your number? Application to product - Are you shipping enough features to hit your major objectives? The mechanism you use to keep track of progress should be incorporated into your daily workflow - i.e. google docs, apps on your phone, etc. Ask this question - Am I making progress or do I need to course correct? Keller - The One Thing - Book Review Podcast You can readjust, reassess, failure is ok. Is it better to set 10 goals, and execute on none?  Or, establish one goal and execute on that one? Losing control of your days can significantly impact goal execution Control the day Setting success criteria Measuring success Evaluate the data Shine the lens backward / ask what did I accomplish? Things will happen, obstacles will occur - compartmentalize Time management is critical - assess your current state - document. List out the things you are currently spending time on. List out the things you should be spending time on. Connect the dots between the things you are doing, and your goals. Eliminate obstacles. Evaluate your goals - Be willing to let go Goal setting and execution are a process You will fail, You will learn from the mistakes You can't change the past, you can create in the future Start with one thing Simmons - Professional Goals Onboard 5 New Clients in 2019 Launch a Digital Subscription Program Launch 2 New Productized Services Speak at 6 Events Show Links Send us your Questions Twitter hello@catalystsale.com  Catalyst Sale - Live Chat Catalyst Sale - Podcast List Thank You  Thank you for rating and reviewing the podcast via iTunes, Google Play, or your favorite podcast platform.  Ratings & reviews help others discover the podcast - thank you for helping us get our message out to the community. And it made me realize all it takes is five minutes to do something special for a customer. One inch in five minutes and you can create a situation where a customer tells other people about you. The First Noel with Guest Jeff Noel Jeff has spent 30 years building an amazing career at the Walt Disney Company.  The last 15 years a speaker with the Disney Institute. I am really excited to have Jeff join us this week, in what I hope is an annual Christmas appearance.  This week we discuss Jeff's blogs, which he has published daily since April 1st 2009, goal setting, sales, learning, and execution.  I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. Questions Addressed Why The First Noel? How does Jeff achieve balance? Why did Jeff select to focus on mind, body, spirit, health? Do you want to be the best in the category, or do you want to be the category? How can we be better salespeople, and not focused on the pitch? "Don't let your learning lead to knowledge, let your learning lead to action" - what does this mean to Jeff? Is there any guidance Jeff would give folks on going through the process of setting goals for the next year? Key Takeaways Jeff has blogged every day, since April 1st, 2009 Mind Body Spirit Family Health Work Health Everyone struggles to gain the feeling that they are not overwhelmed in one area or another. Jeff could not find a role model that had the balance he was looking for. We tend to use "time" to measure balance.  Jeff suggests using "energy". If you wanted to be prepared, if the unthinkable were to happen, what would you do?  (Jeff's question) You take your mind, body, spirit to work & home. Work is our contribution to society.  Society (work) pays people for our contribution. Your "Get to Do's" should be more than your "Have to Do's" Other questions to consider... How is your health? How is your attitude? How is your spirit? How are you at work? How are you at home? Brand is your reputation.  It's the first thing people think about when they hear your name or see your name. Brand yourself for yourself - your inner voice should be encouraging. Not self-defeating. The self-talk, self-branding, has to be a critical part of your movement forward. Walt Disney & Roy Disney were brothers, they worked together for decades.  Roy looked at profit as the goal, Walt looked at profit as the reward.  The customer can feel this. "The sale should be the reward, not the goal" - Jeff Creativity is the idea part, Innovation is the implementation. All of Jeff's blogs are personal. Can you be a boundary pusher? It's only impossible (your impossible) until you do it for the first time. Do something every day that scares you, eventually, you will do something that inspires you. Some additional thoughts Jeff shared regarding setting goals, documentation, and execution. Everything that happens to you is a gift - Train yourself in finding the good. You think, you move, and you feel.  You do have a job, you have a place where you live.  Draw five boxes on a piece of paper Create your list Identify those things that are missing Identify those things that you don't need to take with you. Start with the blueprint. Things will work out better than you hope, or worse.  Be grateful when it is better, forgive yourself when it is worse. Go through the practice. Reflect. Keep Moving Forward. Think Differently. What is 4/20, and why is it a stoner holiday? A look at how ‘420’ became linked to marijuana Friday is April 20, or 4/20. That’s the numerical code for marijuana’s high holiday, a homage to pot’s enduring appeal and universal slang for smoking. Festivities are planned worldwide, culminating with a synchronized smoke at 4:20 p.m. How the marijuana-loving world came to mark the occasion is believed traceable to five Northern California men now in their 60s with bad backs and graying hair. They are the unofficial grandmasters by virtue of the code they created nearly 50 years ago as students at a suburban San Francisco high school in 1971. After a recent trip to Disneyland, I have been thinking about how to delight repeat customers.  It is one thing to make sure someone has a great experience the first time they do business with you, but how do you continue to create a great experience for repeat customers? No one delights the way Disney does, so I asked Jeff Noel how to make sure a returning customer still has a great experience.  Here are the three points you need to know about creating a great experience for your customers.  All organizations have people, physical resources, and processes. What you do with these three resources will set you apart from others and make sure your customers are delighted.  If you believe it can't be done, it can't. You may be the biggest roadblock to making sure your customers have a great experience.  Find the stereotypes in your industry and use the three resources from point 1 to bust through them.   Write out one stereotype for your industry. Below this, write People - Physical Resources - Processes. List out how you can use these three resources to bust through the stereotype.  To learn more from Jeff Noel, you can follow him on Twitter at @JeffNoelMidlife.

If you have ever been to Disney World and made a retail purchase, you probably noticed how well the cashier treated you. Rather than going through the motion, a cast member working in retail engages customers and adds to the overall Disney experience.  This week on Creating Disney Magic, Lee answers a listener question about how Disney achieves such a high level of excellence in retail sales.  The key to success in any organization is for everyone to know their role in the show. You get there by hiring, training, and rehearsal. Most organizations do not have standards or a script and retail employees do not understand how they should act.  If you have a question you would like Lee to answer on the podcast, you can submit it here.  Referenced in this episode is Jeff Noel's appearance on the Jody Maberry Show.  Click HERE to get your name on the list to find out more about Lee's Time Management Magic course.

Perhaps you have heard me mention that I used to be a park ranger. During my eight years as a Park Ranger, only once did I see an event that shocked everyone who saw it. Children gasped. Parents turned their heads. A baby cried. You wouldn't believe me if I told you that a Park Ranger caused the commotion. The shocking event happened at the end of an interpretive hike on a trail in the Little Spokane River Natural Area of Riverside State Park. Twenty kids and their parents joined Park Ranger Joseph Felgenhauer and me for a hike along the meandering river. Ranger Felgenhauer led the group using words to guide their steps through the forest. He talked about trees. He talked about the river. He discussed the native history of the area. He pointed out signs of wildlife. He encouraged kids to touch leaves, trees, rocks, and bugs. He explained the value of connecting to the natural world. At the end of the hike, as we approached the parking area, he pointed out deer droppings to the kids. He explained how to tell what type of animal the scat had come from. Ranger Felgenhauer then reached down, picked up two deer droppings, and popped them in his mouth. “It tastes nutty” was all Ranger Felgenhauer said about it before leading the group down the short trail to the parking area as he finished his interpretive hike. No one in attendance heard another word after “nutty”. The crowd was still buzzing with what they had seen as they climbed into mini-vans and SUVs. Here is what the crowd did not know. For several weeks, Ranger Felgenhauer and I had it on our calendar to do an interpretive hike with a group of school kids. Left up to me, I would have conducted the hike based on my knowledge and experience in that area of the park. Ranger Felgenhauer took a different approach. Joseph is a champion interpreter and he would not give an interpretive walk without knowing every turn and curve that his guests would walk. He wanted to see what they would see before they saw it, so he could tell a story about it. The morning of the scheduled hike, Joseph and I had visited the Natural Are where the hike would be. We walked the trail and Joseph took note of interesting trees, plants, and rocks. He planned what he would say at each viewpoint along the river. He paid special attention to coyote scat alongside the trail, knowing it would present an opportunity for a story. When the kids arrived we lead them on the predetermined route along the river. Ranger Felgenhauer hit each practiced point right on queue. He stirred enthusiasm in the kids and answered every question. At the coyote scat, Ranger Felgenhauer had each kid examine it. He explained what you can learn from scat; what the coyote ate and how long ago the animal had been there. Finally, towards the end of the hike, Ranger Felgenhauer discovered the deer scat under a young Ponderosa Pine tree. The kids leaned in to hear what then Ranger would teach them. And then Joseph ate deer droppings. It was something that none of the kids, or their parents, will forget. Joseph Felgenhauer and I worked together only a few months. I left Riverside State Park for another park and soon after Joseph moved on to another career. Even after I left, the way Joseph conducted the interpretive hike stuck with me. Joseph knew knowledge does not have the same impact as preparation. Preparation was the key to delivering a great experience to families who took time out of their day to go on a walk with us. Joseph did not just lead a hike and talk about what showed up before us. Each stop was a deliberate effort to educate the kids. Each viewpoint had been pre-selected to offer the best opportunity for a story. Interesting trees and large rocks had been chosen as highlights because they would create the most curiosity from the kids. And the coyote scat played into the story of the day. It offered an educational stop and made the kids consider what they can learn from scat. It played right into Joseph's finale of eating deer dropping. You see, the finale was deliberate, just like the rest of the hike. Joseph knew by doing something that would WOW the kids they would remember the hike. The precise spot and timing of that event had been planned. Earlier in the morning, when we had walked the trail, Joseph had sprinkled Raisinets on the ground under the pine tree. Ranger Joseph Felgenhauer knew how to deliver a memorable customer experience. Jeff Noel talks about going the extra inch beyond what customers expect. For Joseph Felgenhauer, the extra inch was as simple a couple of raisinettes. Joseph Felgenhauer taught us that preparation is the key to delivering a memorable customer experience to your customers. You can prepare like a park ranger, too. Here are the three steps you can learn from Joseph to deliver some WOW to your customers; See what your customers will see. How do you do this? Park in the parking lot and walk into your business. What did it look and feel like on the way in, beginning with the walk through the parking lot? Visit your website and look for information people would commonly be looking for, like your contact information, or even what you do. Call your business. Look at the ways customers interact with you and walk through it like Ranger Felgenhauer walked the trail before he had a school group with him. By walking the trail ahead of time, Joseph knew where the landmarks were. He knew when to tell stories. He even knew when to tell kids to watch their step. You have to begin by walking the same path your customers are going to walk. It doesn't matter if you are a butcher, a baker, or a candlestick maker. Know your stuff. I mentioned that ranger Felgenhauer knew that preparation trumps knowledge. True enough, but he also knew what he was talking about. He didn't talk about oak trees while standing next to a Ponderosa Pine. He didn't talk about a black bear's diet when the group was looking at Coyote Scat. First, Joseph walked the trail to know what his customers would experience. Then, since he knew his stuff, he was able to know where stories could be inserted into the hike. He knew this rock outcrop offered a view of an Osprey nest and it would give him an opportunity to talk about how an Osprey turns a fish when it carries it back to the nest. How can you do this? Once you know what your customer will experience, you can make sure the right information is in the right places. Sometimes it could be something as simple as having the hours of operation on your door. It could be having the right words in the mouth of staff that customers will interact with. It could mean having well-writtenwords on your website. It means understanding where to include information to enhance the customer experience. Add the WOW. Ranger Felgenhauer would not have been able to wow his customers if he had not prepared. He did backstage work so he could delight people when he was onstage. Well, I am not really sure if anyone was delighted when he ate deer poop, but people did say WOW. Because Joseph already knew the trail, he already knew what the group would see, he already knew what stories they would hear, he understand exactly how to deliver WOW. It was timed perfectly so the group was talking about what happened as they walked back to the car, and probably talked about it on the way home too. How can you deliver WOW? You don't have to eat anything gross. You don't have to go over the top. Add something a little delightful that other people are not doing. Dan Miller often includes mints in the box when you order books or other items from him. Look at what others are doing and do something different. Or do what they are not doing. Open an hour earlier, close an hour later. Return phone calls. Or answer your phone. Not many people answer their phone anymore. You will likely know what to do to add WOW if you have followed the first two steps. If you have walked the path your customers will walk, you will know when you have the opportunity to go the extra inch to delight and even WOW a customer. All it takes is to go a little further than what people expect. Jeff Noel introduced me to the idea of going the extra inch, but I am so taken by it I am going to adopt this idea. Isn't it encouraging to know you don't have to go an extra mile to delight people? All it takes is an extra inch. And we can all stretch one more inch, right? One inch is all that separates you from the competition. And when you go the extra inch enough times, you are a foot ahead of everyone around you. Preparation is key to show you have mastered your message. I know what question you probably want to ask me, so I am going to go ahead and answer it. No, Ranger Felgenhauer did not tell the group that it was raisenettes he ate. Everyone went home thinking he had eaten deer droppings.

Jeff understands what makes Disney World so successful, from the big picture of leadership and customer service to the very smallest items, like trash. Jeff joins the Jody Maberry Show to talk trash. Disney World is one of the cleanest places you will visit. How do they do it? More importantly, why do they do it? What does Disney obsess about the cleanliness of the park? One of the key's to making Disney World so clean is Cast Members understand what their priorities are. First, Cast Members make sure Guests have a great time. Second, Cast Members pick up trash. Third priority is the job you were hired to do. Imagine the impact it has on the culture for every cast member to understand picking up trash is so important, you should pick up litter before you tend to the job you were hired to do.
