Today, on Karl and Crew, we celebrated the National Day of Prayer by discussing the importance of prayer. Prayer is an intimate time of communion and conversation with the Lord, and as Christ followers, we should be actively praying. Do you have an active prayer life? We turned to Matthew 6:5-14, which provides us with some guidelines on how to pray properly. We also heard from our listeners about how God answered their prayers. We then had Dr. Ronnie Floyd join us to discuss the purpose of the National Day of Prayer. Dr. Floyd was the former National Day of Prayer Task Force president and is now a speaker, author, and encourager. He is dedicated to helping others, committed to the next generation, and empowering leaders. He is also the host of the weekly podcast, For Leaders Podcast with Ronnie Floyd. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Our Task Force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage participation on the National Day of Prayer. It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America's leaders and its families. The Task Force represents a Judeo-Christian expression of the national observance, based on our understanding that this country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible. Historical Summary 1775 – The first Continental Congress called for a National Day of Prayer 1863 – Abraham Lincoln called for such a day. 1952 – Congress established NDP as an annual event by a joint resolution, signed into law by President Truman (82-324) 1988 – The law was amended and signed by President Reagan, designating the NDP as the first Thursday in May (100-307). The annual recognition of the National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 4, 2023. This episode of 2Days Denarius, as in the previous two years, is devoted to giving prayer on behalf of our great nation. This year, it's being done differently than the prior two as it gives those who listen an opportunity to join in and pray from their own hearts over the seven different prayer topics it covers. These include, Family, Church, Education, Business and the Workplace, the Military, our Government, the Arts, Entertainment, and the Media. All these sectors are critical to the health and wellbeing of our nation. This is guided prayer. There is no music, as all who participate should come with focused hearts and minds, with no distraction. Please take the necessary time to pause from all activity, to find a place to pray with fervency and intensity, as these are so much needed at this time. 2Days Denarius is grateful to the National Day of Prayer Task Force for providing the prayer guide that this episode of 2DaysD follows. In addition, this ministry expresses gratitude to the First Baptist Church Atlanta for promoting participation and the prayer guides on its website as well. The prayer guides my be obtained at the weblinks nationaldayofprayer.org or fba.org. 2Days Denarius is a social media ministry dedicated to the spiritual growth of Christians and to reach the lost with the Good News of salvation in Jesus Christ and Him alone. The creator of this podcast fully supports the inerrancy, infallibility, and authority of Scripture as our only rule of faith and practice. He also holds to the doctrines of the true Christian faith as provided in the London Baptist Confession of 1689. Theme song "Most of Our Time" is used by permission of author/artist Pastor Steve Hereford of the Eastport Baptist Church of Jacksonville FL. Dr. Ronnie Floyd was elected as president and CEO of the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention on April 2, 2019. Floyd has deep experience in Southern Baptist leadership, having served two terms as SBC president (2014–2015 and 2015–2016), as chairman of the Great Commission Task Force of the Southern Baptist Convention (2009–2010), and on the SBC Executive Committee (1988–1998). As a member of the Executive Committee, Floyd was on the Committee’s presidential search committee (1991–1992), the Program and Structure Study Committee of the SBC (1993-1995), and was chairman of the board (1995–1997). During this time, he was also elected as president of the SBC Pastors’ Conference (1997). He also served as general editor of LifeWay Christian Resources’ Bible Studies for Life curriculum (2013–2017); chief mobilization strategist with the North American Mission Board (2012–2015); and was on the board of trustees, GuideStone Financial Resources (2001–2009). Floyd was pastor of five churches over a span of 43 years, the last 32 of which were as Senior Pastor of Cross Church, a multi-campus church in Northwest Arkansas (1986–2019). His experience, wisdom, and passion for God make him a powerful proclaimer of God’s Word and inspiring leader. He has spoken at numerous SBC Pastors’ Conferences, state evangelism conferences, and state conventions and has pledged to lead the Executive Committee “with a pastor’s heart.” In 2017 Dr. Floyd was named the president of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, a position he held for two years. The National Day of Prayer Task Force mobilizes unified public prayer for America throughout the year, leading to the National Day of Prayer observance which is held annually on the first Thursday of May. Dr. Floyd continued serving as Senior Pastor at Cross Church while in this role. He was on the Family Research Council board of directors from 2016–2019, serving until he resigned to accept his position with the SBC Executive Committee. During Floyd’s 32-year ministry in Northwest Arkansas, the church baptized more than 25,500 people. In 2001, First Baptist Church of Springdale became a multi-campus ministry with the beginning of The Church at Pinnacle Hills. In 2010, the church changed its name to Cross Church and expanded to three campuses in Northwest Arkansas—Springdale, Rogers, and Fayetteville—and a campus in Neosho, Missouri, by the time Floyd accepted his current position. The Bible teaches that God is all-powerful and sovereign over his creation. But the Bible also teaches that prayer is commanded by God and is a tangible way by which we can affect ourselves and creation. How can we hold such seemingly contradictory ideas at the same time? This week, Vince is joined by Kathy Branzell, President of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, to discuss some of the practical realities of prayer in the midst of trials. What do we do when prayer seems hopeless? Question Asked in This Episode: "A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at age 24, and I'm having a difficult time praying about it. I don't see the point of praying if the outcome is already determined. Prayer is something that I have always struggled with. If God is all-knowing and he has the future mapped out, what is the purpose of prayer? Does prayer really have any influence on God? In addition, if he already knows all of our thoughts and ways, as is said in Psalm 139:1-3, what is the purpose of expressing them to him verbally?" Have a question you want Ask Away to cover?
