What role should men play in stopping sexist behaviour? Several campaigns have aimed to tackle this, the most recent being the Mayor of London's Maaate initiative. To discuss Nuala is joined by Karen Whybro who is a Woman's Safety Consultant and Graham Goulden, the former Chief Inspector at Police Scotland, and who now offers training to organisations to improve team culture. The play, Beneatha's place, currently running at the Young Vic, shows the main character Beneatha in two different periods of her life. First, in 1959, as a young black activist. Then 50 years later, as a renowned Dean of an American university. With Nuala to talk about the play is Cherrelle Skeete who plays Beneatha and Nicola Rollock, Professor of Social Policy and Race at King's College London who worked as a cultural consultant to the play. Earlier this month the Taliban ordered the closure of women's beauty salons in Afghanistan. Faranak Amidi speaks to Shekiba Habib from BBC Pashto and Aaliya Farzan from BBC Dari about this latest restriction. The International Confederation of Midwives has appointed the world's first ever Chief Midwife. Professor Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent joins Nuala to talk about the challenges midwives face across the world, and how she hopes to combat them. The podcast The Girlfriends follows a group of women coming together to investigate their ex-boyfriend. It begins in 1989 when a man named Bob Bierenbaum moved to Las Vegas. When a group of his ex-girlfriends discover that his wife, Gail Katz, went missing and is presumed dead, they go from dating him to investigating him. Almost 30 years later, Carole Fisher, one of the women who dated Bob, joins Nuala to discuss how she finally got justice for Gail. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Emma Pearce

The Taliban sent out a text message in early July to beauty salon owners across Afghanistan, stating that they had one month to close shop. Salons are one of the few remaining public spaces where women can safely socialize, and a source of income for women to support not only themselves but often also their families. This latest mandate is yet another blow to women since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in August 2021. The question on everyone's mind now is, what does the ban on beauty salons mean for Afghan women going forward?  In this episode:  Mina Sharif (@minasharif), television and radio producer Alison Davidian (@davidianali), UN Women representative in Afghanistan Episode credits: This episode was produced by Fahrinisa Campana, Amy Walters and our host Malika Bilal. I found myself in my early 30's extremely successful professionally, but burned out physically, mentally, and spiritually. My career in the automotive industry was lucrative, however every other aspect of my life suffered. And when that happened, the money didn't mean much. I DIDN'T TAKE CARE OF MY WELLNESS AND THEN WAS FORCED TO TAKE CARE OF MY ILLNESS! This was a wake-up call. I started to question what was truly important to me in life – my health and my family. I eventually retired from that industry and now am happy living the best life ever. What's it like working as a hairdresser at a senior living community? Margo Brooks would tell you it's been the best 9 years of her life, full of nonstop laughs, fun and fulfillment. Not only does she cut and style hair for senior men and women, but she uses her beauty school training for grooming and applying makeup to help seniors feel their best. Margo tells Seniors Living Expert Lori Williams how she started working at the onsite senior living salon and the joys of the job. She'll also discuss the seniors that inspire her and how (in the words of one of her clients) feeling good is “better than medicine.” Topics discussed:- Life at senior living and memory care communities- Cutting hair for memory care patients- Caring for loved ones with dementia- Beauty and grooming for seniors- Hairstyling and makeup for funerals Takeaways from this episode:- Hair appointments give seniors something to look forward to if they're lonely or in need of self-care. They often share information with hairdressers they wouldn't tell anyone else.- Seniors feel better if they look better. It's been said, “When I come in here, it's better than medicine.”- Seniors with memory issues often love getting their hair done just as much as anybody else, but one important tip is to take a slower approach, be patient with them, and explain what you're doing each step of the way.- One service some hairdressers perform is styling hair or applying makeup for the funeral of the deceased. This is a gift to family and to honor their loved one by ensuring they look like they did in life. Instead of getting health education information from a clinic, how about getting it from your regular barber shop? Or at your beauty salon during your next facial? What’s it like working as a hairdresser at a senior living community? Margo Brooks would tell you it’s been the best 9 years of her life, full of nonstop laughs, fun and fulfillment. Not only does she cut and style hair for senior men and women, but she uses her beauty school training for grooming and applying makeup to help seniors feel their best.Margo tells Seniors Living Expert Lori Williams how she started working at the onsite senior living salon and the joys of the job. She’ll also discuss the seniors that inspire her and how (in the words of one of her clients) feeling good is “better than medicine.”Topics discussed:- Life at senior living and memory care communities- Cutting hair for memory care patients- Caring for loved ones with dementia- Beauty and grooming for seniors- Hairstyling and makeup for funeralsTakeaways from this episode:- Hair appointments give seniors something to look forward to if they’re lonely or in need of self-care. They often share information with hairdressers they wouldn’t tell anyone else.- Seniors feel better if they look better. It’s been said, “When I come in here, it's better than medicine.”- Seniors with memory issues often love getting their hair done just as much as anybody else, but one important tip is to take a slower approach, be patient with them, and explain what you’re doing each step of the way.- One service some hairdressers perform is styling hair or applying makeup for the funeral of the deceased. This is a gift to family and to honor their loved one by ensuring they look like they did in life.To connect with Margo Brooks:https://www.facebook.com/Margo-Brooks-Salon-LLC-538011076225312/?__xts__[0]=68.ARCZdUVW5H321uPN_otyZPnBJg9CRvI23BTWbHpFgyEsTlLYsQfbbaJ6v-ruwTdh3j4S2fcK1VaTFCIAeCXsNzC5VWR9921bir1o8xpDOzroMinXxWVB0tT2G7qESJJrLRcMzD4sNTnDbArbxjsuS61qpTKB0cttA4-znOchVkui0xqPeVP99ORefL_vCK4e-TA2XN1fOQ-wyVbpu419GXjohOoR-TevCYCObkwxdPfoB69-eivkpIeiMhTnAEqEVFFRR3ikv5MBYBwyvf_k69ASYU5AS34YbaaCPeY0xnafnsYcbbL06-6-yI6fy0l_dBVysWt4q7Q4G3TqcclczHxIL7vcTo suggest a topic, be a guest or to support the podcast please email Lori@Loriwilliams-seniorservices.com For more senior resources and to sign up to the newsletter please visit:https://www.facebook.com/LoriWilliamsSeniorServices/https://www.instagram.com/theloriwilliams/https://www.linkedin.com/in/theloriwilliams/https://loriwilliams-seniorservices.com/aging-in-style-podcast/

Referred to as a ‘Walking Encyclopaedia' by a mentor he developed a passion for planning in 2015 having got fed up with inaccurate information on some websites as to what was possible with property or land that he was looking to develop. In 2017 he set up the site ‘Planning Geek‘ as a way to inform others as to the possibilities of using permitted development rights on both domestic and commercial property. This has now grown to cover many other aspects of planning, giving plenty of ‘wow' moments. Reviewing restrooms is part of a bigger plan, I know there might be someone out there wondering why I'm reviewing restrooms, well there's a method to my madness. Last week, when I looked at my analytics, I noticed I had more people tuning in from France than I did from CT. That bothered me, on the one hand I was excited about the reach of the podcast, but, that area of opportunity bothered me. Why didn't more people know about the podcast in the state I live in? Whelp that would be my fault, and so I'm going to change that. Currently only 9% of our audience tunes in from Connecticut. Growth Strategy: Conduct restroom review. Post and tag establishment on IG. The way we respond to pandemics and crises in the future will be informed by what we're doing now. What can we learn about how better to prepare our business. If, When and How your business is permitted to open in the wake of this global pandemic will no doubt be determined by your local, state and federal governments and regulatory bodies. As we're seeing, the type of licence you have for your business is one of the key considerations. In Malaysia, Spas can not open yet, but Beauty Salons can.  Some Spas have only a Spa License. Some have a Spa License and a Beauty License. Those Spas with a Beauty License are permitted to open to provide beauty services only. For many businesses, being open to open a few weeks earlier may be the difference between survival and bankruptcy. So, whatever your business, consider what different types of business licences you could have for your business. When the next wave or the next crisis hits, it may just give you some more options for survival. #businesslicense #covidlearning #crisisplanning

This is the beginning of Season two, and in this episode, I discuss some changes that are taking place in the Beauty Industry.  COVID19 had literally changed lives and the way we normally do things.  As a beauty professional and beauty school owner, there are certain precautions that have to be made in order to ensure safety stylists, students, and clients. I pose two questions: 1. As a beauty professional what will you as a stylist need to do to create the confidence your clients will need? 2. Clients what will you expect from your stylist? I ask these two questions because many States have opened up Beauty Salons and Barbershops and there is a certain level of responsibility we must maintain to keep the spread of COVID19 at bay.  Michigan Board of Cosmetology has not yet released any policies surrounding COVID19 and the safety of salons.  Michigan salons and Barbershops have not yet opened either.  However, when they do open, I am curious to know how will they proceed with accepting clients. I also want to know what will clients expect from their Beauty professionals.  Will they be looking for license and sanitation protocol from their stylist?  What are clients looking for to give them the confidence to return to the salon. One thing I know for sure is that Beauty professionals have done intense training in Infection Control, Sanitation Practices, and Disinfection Methods in beauty school, so for the professionals that will get back to work, I know they will know how to handle their environments.  On the flip side, there are many people that not wanting the World to open back up and I can respect that.  However, the work we do is essential and many people need the connection and outlet to help themselves feel beautiful on the outside. Whatever one chooses to do, safety should be #1! In this episode I share "10 COVID-19 Standard Practice Policy" procedures that can be implemented when the student and stylist return.  I have also included these Standard Polices in my FREE EBook "5 Principles to Understanding and Performing Natural Hair Care Services" which can be downloaded here   If you are back at work, do the necessary steps to make sure you and your clients are safe.  Download the FREE Ebook to learn a few tips on Natural Hair Care and also 10 COVID10 Standard Practice Policies. There are accounts to reconcile, payroll and super to check and pay and of course the June BAS ever present in our bookkeeping part of our lives. But it DOESN’T have to be that difficult…. Joining us today is Michele Grisdale, a BAS Agent and Bookkeeper from Rainforest Bookkeeping; whose philosophy is “We Give You Time Back to Enjoy Life”. The is a real ambassador for the profession; believing in the importance of compliance and accuracy but balancing it with making the software we implement in our businesses actually doing the heavy lifting. Welcome to the show Michele. Topics we’ll be covering: Sole Traders and Small Businesses are critical to the growth and development of this country The problem they do their TAFE or education require for their skills but no one tells them how to run a business.  TAFE has finally started to realise this an is now offering fully-subsidised Skills for Business Training. https://www.tafensw.edu.au/skillsforbusiness This is a step in the right direction and you need to be educated about how to run your business BUT it is still keeping all of the business stress reliant on you and your partner.   Why it is much more expensive to try to do everything yourselves?  If you are trying to do everything yourself or relying on a partner, how much unnecessary stress is it adding to your life how much are you losing trying to do everything yourself?  3 hours per week doing paperwork - how much could you be earning during that? how much are your relationships suffering - is it worth it? Time for data entry, filing, storage - then finding the paperwork for the accountant at tax time. Why using cloud systems and less paper saves us all time, money and real estate End of year success means starting the year off right Choose a Cloud-based solution and remember its not always about which one is initially cheaper Find a way to reduce data entry Do you want to grow or just find better processes to free up your time? Look at whether you need an employee or if its better to use subcontractors Do you have a pro-active accountant? To find out more go to their website: www.rainforestbookkeeping.com.au Rainforest Bookkeeping was founded because we found so many small businesses and sole traders had no time to themselves. When cloud technology came along, we had time to offer more services and better advice because we had real time data. No longer were we spending 3-4 hours a day on data entry for each client - YAY! We can show you how to eliminate data entry and paper in your business. We can show you how to get your time back and stop discussing business all the time. We can show you how to automate many processes and eliminate double handling of every piece of paper. We can show you how to have everything ready for your accountant all of the time and eliminate the end of quarter/year stress. And if you want a little about me: Originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia USA, Michele Grisdale arrived in Sydney in 1995 (22 years ago) and loved it so much she never left.
