In his twenties, before he became a nationally-renowned dog trainer, Matt Beisner was a jobless, self-loathing alcoholic with a rap sheet. And he was scared of dogs. When he went to the shelter one day and unexpectedly adopted a Jindo pup with a rap sheet of his own, Matt's life began to change. As Matt got clean and sober, he and Renge rode out some heartbreaking lows and euphoric highs, and Renge taught Matt how to slow down, live with kindness, and listen to what a dog's trying to say. Because dogs will tell us everything we need to know about life, if we just pay attention.

Korean Jindo: Independent, reserved, polite and serious[caption id="attachment_8587" align="alignleft" width="225"] Hannah Yi and her Jindo practicing for Junior Showmanship competition.[/caption] Hannah Yi and Nichole Royer join host Laura Reeves to share information about the rare and fascinating https://www.akc.org/dog-breeds/jindo/ (Korean Jindo). Developed on Jindo Island, off South Korea's coast, as an isolated population of centuries old village dogs, the breed is a cultural icon in its home country. Renowned for its ability to find its way home, a feature memorialized in Korean culture, Jindo are dedicated hunting dogs and very serious about guarding their home. [caption id="attachment_8588" align="alignright" width="156"] Jindo in South Korea.[/caption] “They were developed as a pretty hardcore hunting and guard dog,” Royer noted. “They are generally used for hunting small game, but they also hunt deer and even wild boar in small groups. They are not a breed that developed hunting along with their owners. They actually expected Jindos to go out and catch small game on their own and bring it home. “When they chased down something like a deer, and I should add the deer and the wild boar on Jindo island are not the size of the deer and wild boar we have here in the US. The deer are much smaller … a small group of Jindos would chase them down and then a couple of the Jindos would stay there to guard the deer, while one or two dogs went to find the owner. [caption id="attachment_8589" align="alignleft" width="300"] Jindo in South Korea[/caption] “(They were) designed to go out, be able to think for themselves, be able to make their own decisions. They take their owner's wishes under advisement, but really are not designed to go around saying ‘what can I do for you.' It's a partnership rather than being what the dog can do for their owner.” “I visited Korea a couple of times as a child,” Yi said, “and in the neighborhood and a bit of the rural parts, you would see them outside … I always (had them) pointed them out ‘hey, that's a Jindo dog.' They've always been a really independent spirit. Even though I didn't know much about them as a kid, I just knew that (they were) culturally ingrained in your knowledge. “(The story in Korea is) there was this dog and it was a white Jindo dog … it lived with its elderly owner in the city. But one day the owner had to sell the dog. So it was really far away. Then seven months later, the dog appeared back to the owner's house. It found its way home. So that's just really stuck to a lot of people. There are a lot of children's books and merch made about that and it was just really interesting to me. I've just always known that story.” While Dog Aggression is a serious awareness with the breed, Royer notes, “They are intelligent guard dogs that are not looking for that excuse. They will act if they have to, but they're not looking to want to act. “Same sex dog aggression is absolutely the norm in this breed. This breed in public should not be aggressive towards other dogs without good reason. However a strange dog getting in their personal space absolutely is good reason. They do not tolerate fools lightly and they do not tolerate rude behavior from other dogs. Jindos never pulled their punches. If they choose to use their teeth, they intend to do damage. “Jindos tend to be a one person or one family dog. They should never be aggressive without good reason. But they also generally are not going to be like my malamutes who will jump into everybody's lap and everybody is their new best friend. They range from being very reserved ‘I don't know you, so I don't really want you touching me' to being calmly friendly. Very polite.” Support this podcast

Ali & Betsy welcome Comedienne Wendy Liebman and her husband, Writer/Director Jeff Sherman to the show to talk all things dogs; specifically, about their darling but somewhat challenging Jindo mixes named Jemma and Jackson. We get into everything from what Jeff & Wendy must do to get Jemma & Jackson to come in at night—the dogs love to be outside and what they must do is quite elaborate—to a cautionary tale of how dogs, chocolate and Marijuana don't mix. We talk about Jeff's new-found fame as the inspiration for the beloved Mary Poppins song, "A Spoonful of Sugar" and so much more!

Malinde (pronounced "Malinda") grew up in Beach Lake PA and now lives in Narrowsburg, NY. Over the years she has worked for local newspapers, driving early-morning delivery routes and managing circulation. Recently she started cleaning homes and staging AirB&Bs. Last month she adopted a beautiful sweet Jindo dog from South Korea, but 10 hours after Sadie came home, she bolted into the woods and remained at large for nearly a month. With lots of help from Buddha Dog Rescue & Recovery in NJ, Sadie was eventually captured and returned to Malinde and her family. Malinde tells the whole story, and brings in some keto-friendly snack to share. Adam reveals a new flavor of pickled egg and Sadie proves herself to be an exceptionally well-behaved doggy.

Take Me Home - Pet Adoption and Animal Rescue - Pets & Animals on Pet Life Radio (PetLifeRadio.com)
Susan Daffron talks to Alaire Garrison from the SPCA/HS of Prince George's County in Maryland about a 3-year old dog named Samurai who is available for adoption. Samurai (aka Sam or Sammy) is a rather unusual breed of dog called a Jindo. These dogs actually originated from the Island of Jindo in Korea where they were bred as hunting dogs. Sam is all white with cream-colored highlights and weighs in at about 45 pounds. He has a curly tail and pointy ears, so he looks somewhat like a small, white Akita. Because of his hunting heritage, he probably would be best in a home without cats or other small animals. He is a bit dominant, but loves to play with sociable dogs. Ideally, he would have access to a dog park or a doggie day care where he could find playmates he can romp and play with. Sam is extremely affectionate with people he knows and is content to lie by your feet. In fact, Sam is laid back enough that he could even live in an apartment or condo, if he got daily walks and exercise to keep him physically and mentally happy. Sammy is a really sweet dog who is just looking for someone to love. (Maybe it's you?!)
