UNIVERSE 25 WAS WILD! Today, we explore John B. Calhoun's infamous experiment that created a utopian world for mice-abundant resources, no predators, and perfect conditions. But this so-called utopia quickly devolved into a dystopian nightmare marked by social collapse, crime, and a breakdown of community bonds. We'll cover the experiment's process and its unsettling outcome, revealing how this nightmare society of mice mirrors troubling parallels to urban human societies struggling with overcrowding, isolation, and rising antisocial behavior. Join us as we review the lasting impact of Universe 25 on science and what it warns us about the fragility of civilization…WELCOME TO CAMP

In this episode of The Search for Meaning, we explore the disturbing parallels between Viktor Frankl's insights on meaning and modern scientific studies of behavior. We'll dive into Frankl's reflections on the human need for purpose, the infamous rat experiments that exposed our addiction to pleasure, and John B. Calhoun's "Mouse Utopia," which foretold societal collapse in the face of abundance. Drawing on Friedrich Nietzsche's concept of "herd beasts," we'll discuss how, in a world without a higher sense of meaning, we've become slaves to a non-existent master—seeking fleeting pleasure and comfort at the cost of self-knowledge, purpose, and genuine freedom. Join us as we ask: Can we reclaim our role as arbiters of meaning? Or are we destined to follow the path of the herd beasts into existential despair?

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is a 1971 children's science fiction/fantasy book by Robert C. O'Brien, with illustrations by Zena Bernstein. The novel was published by the New York City publishing house Atheneum Books.   This book was the winner of numerous awards including the 1972 Newbery Medal.   Ten years following its publication, the story was adapted for film as The Secret of NIMH (1982).   The novel centres around a colony of escaped lab rats–the rats of NIMH–who live in a technologically sophisticated and literate society mimicking that of humans. They come to the aid of Mrs. Frisby, a widowed field mouse who seeks to protect her children and home from destruction by a farmer's plow.   The rats of NIMH were inspired by the research of John B. Calhoun on mouse and rat population dynamics at the National Institute of Mental Health from the 1940s to the 1960s.   After O'Brien's death in 1973, his daughter Jane Leslie Conly wrote two sequels to Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.   The Secret of NIMH is a 1982 American animated fantasy adventure film directed by Don Bluth in his directorial debut and based on Robert C. O'Brien's 1971 children's novel, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. The film features the voices of Elizabeth Hartman, Peter Strauss, Arthur Malet, Dom DeLuise, John Carradine, Derek Jacobi, Hermione Baddeley, and Paul Shenar. It was produced by Bluth's production company Don Bluth Productions in association with Aurora Productions.   The Secret of NIMH was released in the United States on July 2, 1982, by MGM/UA Entertainment Co. under the United Artists label. It was praised by critics for its elegant and painstakingly detailed animation, compelling characters, and deep and mature plot, and won a Saturn Award for Best Animated Film of 1982. Though only a moderate success at the box office, it turned a solid profit through home video and overseas releases. It was followed in 1998 by a direct-to-video sequel, The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue, which was made without Bluth's involvement or input and met with poor reception. In 2015, a live-action/computer-animated remake was reported to be in the works. A television series adaptation is also in development by the Fox Corporation.     Opening Credits; Introduction (1.21); Background History (4.50); Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH Plot Synopsis (6.15); Book Thoughts (11.37); Let's Rate (42.18); Introducing a Film (44.01); Secret of NIMH (1982) Film Trailer (46.00); Lights, Camera, Action (48.33); How Many Stars (1:33.30); End Credits (1.35.41); Closing Credits (1:37.18)   Opening Credits– Epidemic Sound – Copyright . Strange and thought provoking episode today! In the 1940s, 50s, and early 60s, animal behavior researcher John B Calhoun ran a number of experiments on rodents regarding how their behavior would be affected by increased urbanization if all their basic needs were made. The results were terrifying. Crowded rats and mice became increasingly violent and lost their reproductive instincts to the point that eventually, the utopia went extinct after enduring a final phase full of random violent attacks, apathy, cannibalism and more. Could the increased urbanization of humanity also lead to our species' extinction as Calhoun warned?  Or are we humans too different from rodents to presume that what happens to mice and rat would also happen to humans? I found today's episode one of the most thought provoking we've done in quite  some time.

John B. Calhoun was interested in looking at the effects of overcrowding on societies of mammals, so he created a mouse utopia, Universe 25.  Universe 25 was an environment made with unlimited supplies of food and water with no predators, where the mice could live without stress and allow their population to grow without environmental restriction.  What he found was an initial utopia with explosive population growth, but it eventually led to a complete collapse of the social structure of the mice and the death of the entire colony.  What can we learn from this experiment and how might if parallel human society?  Come find out!

As promised here is my video on the Mouse Utopia Experiments by John B. Calhoun. These particular experiments were done with mice and rats. The idea was to see how rodent populations expanded in an environment without natural predators and plenty of food available to them. The only limiting factor to the expansion of the mouse population was space and overcrowded conditions. The idea behind the experiments was to see if the data could be translated over to major cities that were rapidly growing in population in the 1950s and 1960s as the baby boomer generation was born in overcrowded cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angles. Dr. Calhoun created the first mouse universe experiment in 1963 with four breeding pairs and the population expanded into multiple hundreds of mice. Looking at these experiments in a new way I see Suburbia as an attempt to keep economic growth going by reducing the density of housing in the twentieth century. It worked for a while but now the populations that have living in such types of housing for multiple generations are now starting to have less children. We assume that people are having less children on a conscious level, but I don't believe that's the case. Food is cheaper and more plentiful then ever, oil is still relatively cheap when compared to historical standards before the 1920s and 1930s. Dr. Calhoun created many other mouse and rat utopias but no matter what he did and no matter how he set the parameters for his experiments the populations of mice became hostile towards each other as soon as their populations reached a high point. Some mice roamed around the environment in gangs biting the tales of other mice, while female mice started becoming hostile towards their own offspring. Mice had issues with sexuality as many mice started trying to mate with both males and females. Some of them, called the beautiful ones would groom themselves quietly from the corners of the habitat and observe the collapse of their society. It's clear to see that many of the social issues that humans faced from the early 19th century to today are similar to those faced by the mice in the Mouse Utopia. Or should we call it the Mouse Dystopia? In 1908 a 22-year-old Italian baker's assistant arrived in London to take part in the Olympic marathon. He had no coach, he spoke no English, and he was not expected to challenge the elite runners at the top of the field. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow Dorando Pietri on the most celebrated race in Olympic history. We'll also ponder the Great Mull Air Mystery and puzzle over a welcome murder. Intro: In July 1968 ethologist John B. Calhoun built a paradise for mice. In the 50s, 60s and 70s ethologist John B. Calhoun studied the behaviour of rodents in his custom built rat and mice utopias... the results were influential, controversial, fascinating AND a bit fucked!
