Clinical trials are “the foundation of cancer research and lead to better treatment options and outcomes for patients,” said John Hays, MD, PhD, a James medical oncologist who treat patients with peritoneal cancers. He is also one of the leaders of the James clinical trials office and “at any given time we have between 500 to 600 clinical trial open and we put 1,000 patients a year on clinical trials, which is one of the largest numbers in the country.” In this episode, Hays explained the process of how an idea that begins in the lab (usually a new drug) goes through several different phases before it becomes approved for treatment. “Less than one percent of the Phase 1 clinical trials are ever approved,” he said, adding this is done to ensure patient safety and ensure the new treatment is an advancement over current options. “But, even if they're not successful, we can learn something we can apply to the next trial.” He also said there is a common misconception that clinical trials are the “last resort” for patients. “It can be at any phase during treatment, from a front-line treatment setting or a later stage,” he said. “In most cases it's adding something to the standard of care to make the standard of care work better … And, I never present to a patient that you have to do this trial. It's always their decision and my goal is to help them understand everything, answer their questions and allow them to make the best-informed decision for them.” A new national trend in clinical trials the James is helping to lead is decentralizing the location of the trials in order to reach more patients. “We're developing clinical trials by James people for patients all over the state and beyond,” Hays said. “We utilize tele-med and work with the patient's local oncologist. COVID opened our eyes about what we can do from a distance.” Advancing cancer science and bringing new treatment options to patients is what motivates Hays. “We want to be there for our patients and bring them the newest and best options,” he said. “The real joy for me is talking to a patient and giving them the option to participate in a clinical trial and maybe bring them a drug [or treatment option] that isn't available anywhere else.”

We are honored to bring Astronaut Fred Haise to our microphones. From Apollo 13. Not the movie. THE Apollo 13. Astronaut Fred Haise's new book, "Never Panic Early” tells the story of what it's like to find yourself stranded in outer space after your mission to the moon gets scrubbed by an exploding oxygen tank. On today's show, Fred, for the first time, relives his slingshot around the dark side of the moon as he watches newly compiled lunar satellite video that recreates his precise view from the cabin window fifty two years ago. NASA's finest hour wasn't landing a man on the moon and then safely returning him home to planet Earth. It was, instead, a team of dedicated scientists and specialists preventing an emergency from turning into a disaster. Sometimes our finest moment is not what we achieve but what we prevent. The story of Apollo 13 serves as a timeless reminder that there is no substitute for concentrating the mind on what's mission critical. "Don't Panic Early" is not just Fred Haise's story, it's a master's class on keeping your wits about you while all others are losing theirs. Fred wrote the book with Bill Moore who also joins us. Are you interested in Art and Antiques? LearnChair Radio host Bob Dragone interviews John Hays, Deputy Chairman at Christie’s and a leading expert on American furniture and painting. John describes how starting as an unpaid assistant at Christie’s seven years later he ran the company’s furniture and decorative arts division. In the discussion with Bob, John explains how collectors can take risks in collecting unknown artists or concentrate on traditional areas such as American furniture. He state that such furniture is currently undervalued and pieces of Queen Anne or Chippendale may rise in price in the future. John notes that in choosing what pieces to collect, it’s all about the details. Thousands of dollars may separate one piece from another of the same era depending on how elaborate the details involved. John shares his thoughts on how an auctioneer, of which he is prominent at Christie’s, is like the conductor of an orchestra. The auctioneer assembles the collection at hand into an event that often resembles theater in performance and giving the audience a fun event. John tells two stories amongst his most memorable auctions. One involves a portrait of George Washington that set a record for such paintings and the other of a wooden chest with original paint from three hundred years ago that fetched a million dollars. When asked his opinion of the characteristics of a good leader, John stressed that a good leader is also a good follower. Such a leader allows his or her people to learn and discover. John added that leadership involves developing good working relations with colleagues and guiding younger employees. This interview is an interesting peek into the art world that you will enjoy.

Edward Phelan was one of St. Paul's very first settlers. Was he also a murderer? In September 1839 the body of Phelan's cabin-mate, John Hays, was found floating in the Mississippi River. He had been beaten to death. Phelan was charged with the crime, but not convicted. Now, 170 years later, St. Paul author Gary Brueggemann believes he has solved the case. He tells the tale in his new book, Minnesota's Oldest Murder Mystery. We met with Gary Brueggemann at Landmark Center in downtown St. Paul. Swede Hollow is a ravine on St. Paul's east side, and for a hundred years -- 1850s to 1950s -- a receptor neighborhood for recent immigrants. Swedes first, then Italians, then Mexican-Americans. St. Paul historian Steve Trimble edited the Swede Hollow memoirs of Michael Sanchelli for the Spring 2014 issue of Ramsey County History magazine. Steve Trimble joined us to talk about life in old Swede Hollow.
