A model for identifying ways to better protect lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicle from degrading has been developed by a team of mathematicians, physicists and engineers at the University of Portsmouth. This would help extend the life of electric batteries, which are becoming increasingly important as so many vehicles and machines are being built to run electrically. The research, published in the Journal of Mechanics of Physics and Solids, is an important step forward towards production of longer-lasting, improved performance, rechargeable batteries and will be of substantial value to the lithium-ion battery industry. Lithium-ion batteries are important in a wide range of technology, including electric vehicles, laptops, tablets, mobile phones and even medical devices, but deterioration of the battery adversely impacts the length of time that they are operationally effective. Longer lasting electric vehicle batteries Professor Jamie Foster from the School of Mathematics and Physics led the study. He said: "This is fundamental research which is unearthing how mechanical stress affects battery function, and has led us to develop a mechanical model which can be used in lithium-ion battery development to test solutions to prevent the deterioration of battery function and protect against damage. "Ultimately, this could lead to manufacturers being able to produce rechargeable batteries that have a longer, serviceable lifespan. Lithium-ion batteries will be a key technology in realising a truly sustainable and low-carbon economy in the coming decades, and so such improvements are urgently needed. In developing the model, three situations were studied: how batteries behave when compressed; how electrodes react when they first come into contact with liquid electrolytes; and how the battery cells are affected by sudden impact. Previous research in this area was also taken account of. The effective equations derived from the study and which make up the model, mean it will be easier, faster and cheaper, to compute how a battery behaves in different situations. Dr Foster added: "An extension to the service life of lithium-ion batteries would translate directly to lower prices for consumers - something which is needed in the growing electric vehicle market." The study, "Multiple scales homogenisation of a porous viscoelastic material with rigid inclusions: Application to lithium-ion battery electrodes", is available online here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/ science/article/pii/ S0022509625000481 Authors: J.M. Researchers at Durham University have successfully demonstrated long-lasting quantum entanglement between molecules, opening new doors for future advancements in quantum computing, sensing, and fundamental physics. Quantum entanglement of molecules In a world-first, scientists used precisely controlled optical traps, known as 'magic-wavelength optical tweezers,' to create a highly stable environment that supports long-lasting entanglement, a key capability for next-generation quantum technology. Quantum entanglement is a fundamental phenomenon where two particles become linked, and the state of one particle directly influences the other, regardless of the distance between them. This phenomenon is essential for quantum computing and other advanced technologies. While entanglement has been achieved with atoms, achieving it with complex molecules is a significant step forward because molecules offer additional structures and properties, such as vibration and rotation, that can be leveraged in advanced quantum applications. Lead author of the study, Professor Simon Cornish of Durham University, said: "The results highlight the remarkable control we have over individual molecules. Quantum entanglement is very fragile, yet we can entangle two molecules using incredibly weak interactions and then prevent loss of the entanglement for a time approaching one second." This breakthrough was made possible by the development of a stable environment that maintains coherence in entangled molecules over extended periods. By using specially tuned laser light in the optical tweezers, the researchers are able to control molecules with unprecedented precision, paving the way for more complex quantum operations. Co-author of the study, Dr Daniel Ruttley of Durham University, said: "Our work demonstrates the incredible potential of molecules as building blocks for next-generation quantum technologies. Long-lived molecular entanglement could be exploited to construct quantum computers or precise quantum sensors and to understand the quantum nature of complex materials." The research achieved exceptionally high entanglement fidelity, reaching levels over 92% and even higher when accounting for correctable errors. This stability in molecule entanglement is critical for applications requiring long measurement periods and storage of quantum information. Long-lived entanglement in molecules could enhance precision measurements in quantum sensing, simulate complex quantum materials, and enable new forms of quantum computation. Additionally, this research supports the development of 'quantum memories' - devices that store quantum information for longer durations, essential for advanced quantum networks. The breakthrough is the latest in a series of advancements in quantum science and represents a major leap towards using molecules in complex quantum technology. A documentary special - UP Productions' Matt Cutler explores the changing relationship between two cultural institutions in the UK: football and the pub.The pub has an important place in both professional and grassroots football. As the place friends and family meet before the game, and dissect a win or loss afterwards. Where old school friends reserve a table under the big screen to catch-up on a weekend. And where Sunday League teams - many who operate thanks to patronage from their local pub - congregate, celebrate and commiserate. However, the number of UK licensed premises fell below 100,000 for the first time since records began in 2023 – and in the first quarter of 2024, pub closures increased by 51%.And it's already having a major impact on football fan culture.Leadership in Sport MA 2024 Applications Open Applications for the next intake on the 2024 Leadership in Sport Masters are open. Trinity College Dublin has announced the launch of the €1.3 million 'Twilight' project, aiming to revolutionise optical networks with cutting-edge digital twin technology, enabling rapid and disruption-free advancements. Minister for the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Patrick O'Donovan TD, has recently announced 28 funding awards valued at €34 million to support research across seven Higher Education Institutions. One of the awarded projects is Twilight: Twin Lightpaths, A Digital Twin Framework For Full Automation Of Disaggregated Optical Networks. Marco Ruffini, Professor at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), Principal Investigator in the CONNECT Centre, and lead author of the project proposal, emphasises the project's transformative potential: "Optical networks are the lifeblood of the internet. They must evolve to support the ever-increasing usage of the internet and digital innovations like Smart Cities and Virtual/Augmented Reality. Twilight's digital twin project will ensure safe, rapid advancements without network disruption. We are grateful to Minister O'Donovan for supporting this important initiative. I would also like to thank our colleagues from HEAnet and GÉANT who supported us and are going to be collaborating with us on this project." HEAnet, Ireland's National Education and Research Network, manages a national optical network of over 2,500 km, which is a central part of Ireland's national research infrastructure. HEAnet has collaborated with the SFI Connect Centre over many years, providing connectivity services and research demonstrations on the HEAnet production network. . In 2022, HEAnet connected directly to Prof. Ruffini's Open Ireland test network at Trinity College Dublin. This has provided Prof. Ruffini's group with access to the production HEAnet optical network while also enabling HEAnet to gain valuable insights into the characteristics of the HEAnet production network. HEAnet connects to the GÉANT pan-European research and education network in both Dublin and Cork. The Twilight project will provide optical connectivity from the Open Ireland test bed to the GÉANT optical network via the HEAnet network for the first time. Eoin Kenny, Innovation and R&D Manager at HEAnet, highlights the project's efficiency: "Planning network changes has always been challenging. Twilight's digital twin will streamline this process, save time and help HEAnet to optimise our network resources. We are very pleased with the work carried out on the OpenIreland research infrastructure and look forward to continuing this close collaboration." HEAnet is a member of GÉANT, the collaboration of European National Research and Education Networks (NRENs), who interconnects Europe's NRENs with the high bandwidth, high speed and highly resilient pan-European backbone, together connecting Europe's researchers, academics and students to each other, and linking them to over half the countries in the world. Guy Roberts, Senior Transport Network Architect at GÉANT also expressed enthusiasm for the Twilight project: "The future for anyone working with optical networks looks bright with all the new technologies on our side. We are continually dealing with the issues of dynamic provisioning of optical paths. FIFA+ is the global football governing bodies own media platform, created in 2020 and launched two years later. It's one of sports biggest and most ambitious and expensive direct-to-consumer projects, and so brings together many of the threads we talk about often on Unofficial Partner; a debate that runs across the sports industry, as governing bodies, leagues and teams spend billions creating owned and operated channels as a mitigation against volatility in the media rights marketplace and the money made from their content by the big social media platforms. The conversation is peppered with phrases such as walled gardens, creative tension in the bidding process, owning the customer relationship, long tail audiences, build and they will come. FIFA+ is a poster child for these theories. But this is a conversation that goes beyond the mechanics of D2C. It's about what the leaders of big sports governing bodies want to be and the role they will seek to play over the next decade or more.Read this week's UP Newsletter for more on FIFA+ HEREGuests:Dave Roberts was one of the architects of FIFA+ in the run up to launch and in its early iterations. Western universities have continued to lose their grip on the QS World University Rankings, as institutions from China and India have improved quickly.China had several universities in the top 100 of this year's rankings, which look at the achievements of the world's best 1,500 institutions in terms of academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratios, sustainability, employment outcomes, and international research networks.Peking University was China's best, in 14th place, three up from last year's 17th. The University of Hong Kong rose to 17th from 26th last year, and Tsinghua University rose to 20th from last year's 25th.India also had a very good year, with 91 percent of its 46 ranked universities either improving or remaining stable. In contrast, two-thirds of universities in the United States slipped down the QS rankings this year.Ben Sowter, a senior vice-president at QS, said changes in the world order seem to be on the way."If one were to tell a story of the last two decades of global higher education, it would be of the US managing to remain pre-eminent … amidst intensifying ambition from Asia's great powers. This year offers the starkest signal yet that there is no guarantee whatsoever that the US' privileged position can withstand this ambition indefinitely."Despite the pressure from Asian institutions, many long-established Western universities also had a good year.Imperial College London overtook fellow British elite institutions the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, rising to second place from last year's eighth.Imperial, which specializes in business, engineering, medicine, and science, improved largely because of its environmental work and now sits behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which has been in first place for 13 consecutive years. The fact that Imperial is now rated higher than both Oxford and Cambridge will have been disappointing for them, given they were rated first and second among UK universities throughout the rankings' 20-year existence.Cambridge currently sits in fifth place, overall, after having been second last year and Oxford is in third. The US' Harvard University is fourth. With University College London in ninth place, four UK universities made the top 10, but around half of the nation's universities lost places.Hugh Brady, president of Imperial College London, said: "Imperial's ranking is a testament to the quality and commitment of our entire community. It is inspiring to see our students, staff, and partners come together every day to interrogate the forces that shape our world and address the challenges facing humanity and our planet."The data collected by QS is spun into several listings. One, which grades institutions on their academic reputation alone, placed Harvard University in first place, with the University of Oxford in second, and the University of Cambridge in third.Reporter: Earle Gale in London

The twelfth edition of the QS World University Rankings by subject is out and springs a surprise on some of the IITs. Chennai-based Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences and Dhanbad's Indian School of Mines University made it to India's top 16 in the UK-based Quacquarelli Symonds's latest World University Rankings by Subject. Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences has been placed 18th globally for dentistry and IIT-ISM, Dhanbad is India's second-highest ranked at 26th place for mineral and mining engineering subject. 35 programmes offered by 16 Indian higher education institutions have managed to break into the top 100 in the world, in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022. This is a considerable improvement from last year, when 25 courses by 12 institutions made it to the top 100. Rising over a hundred places, The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Mohali, made the highest jump in rankings by being placed 44th in pharmacy and pharmacology subject. Programmes from six of the eight Public Institutes of Eminence have figured in the top 100. IIT Madras ranked 30th for petroleum engineering, becoming India's highest-ranking Public Institute of Eminence. Others include IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, Delhi University and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. The University of Delhi was ranked 41st in the development studies subject. The OP Jindal Global University has been placed at the 70th position for law and legal studies. It is the only Private Institute of Eminence and the only private institute, apart from Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, to make it to the top 100. Public Institutes of Eminence remained better-represented in the rankings than private ones. QS said, after four and a half years since the inception of the country's ‘Institutes of Eminence' scheme, the recognised universities gained moderate ground on the global stage. A significant amount of autonomy in academic, administrative and financial matters has been provided under the regulatory framework to these institutions. Financial assistance of up to Rs 1,000 crore over a period of five years is granted by the government to each of the Public Institutions of Eminence. In the business and management studies, Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) Bangalore and Ahmedabad bagged top-100 ranks. So, what's the roadmap for Indian universities to improve their position in QS rankings? While Indian institutes have made great strides towards achieving world-class quality, more efforts are required in the areas of faculty-to-student ratio, international faculty and international students to climb the QS rankings of best universities and best programmes. Following India's liberalisation, the government had in 1995 drafted the Foreign Education Bill which had to be shelved. Another attempt was made in 2006, but the draft law could not cross the Cabinet stage. Then in 2010, the UPA-2 government brought the Foreign Educational Institutions Bill, which failed to get enough support in the Parliament. The bill lapsed in 2014 as UPA lost power. Now, the Centre in its Union Budget earlier this month announced that world-class foreign universities will be allowed to offer courses in financial management, fintech, science, technology, engineering and mathematics Gujarat International Finance Tec-City or GIFT City, free from domestic regulations. This would complement efforts to provide high quality human capital to India's financial services industry. This announcement follows the National Education Policy 2020, which said that select foreign universities will be allowed to operate in India. The government move seems to be yielding results. Business Standard recently reported that London Business School, King's College in London, the University of Cambridge, and New York University have started preliminary discussion with the GIFT City authorities and the regulator to establish facilities at the GIFT International Financial Services Centre. A recent report by consulting firm Redseer estimated that Indian students' overseas spending is set to grow from current annual $28 billion to $80 billion annually by 2024. The number of Indian students opting for higher education abroad grew from 440,000 in 2016 to 770,000 in 2019 and is set to grow further to roughly 1.8 million by 2024, resulting in an increased overseas spending on higher education. The significant increase in outflow of students is driven by factors like better educational quality and outcomes abroad, higher standards of living, gaps in the Indian education system leading to supply-demand imbalance, and upward income mobility of Indian households, among others. India has more than 1000 universities and 42,000 colleges. Despite having one of the largest higher education systems in the world, India's Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education is just 27.1%, among the world's lowest. Ashoka University's Anirban Chakraborty talks about the policy challenges and the impact that entry of foreign institutions will have on the competitiveness among their Indian counterparts. The lack of quality in Indian education is reflected in the QS World University Rankings 2022. IIT Bombay was the top-ranking Indian institute in the list with a ranking of 177. Only eight Indian universities made it to the top 400. Apart from fostering a competition in quality, International branch campuses can also help in reducing the foreign exchange outflow. Subsequently, it will help retain the best of Indian talent by controlling the problem of brain drain. More than eight lakh Indians gave up their citizenship in the last seven years. Finally, opening the door for foreign universities can improve India's soft power as it will provide further impetus to the government's Study in India programme that seeks to attract foreign students. Mezi pětistovkou nejlepších univerzit světa v žebříčku QS World University Rankings jsou také tři české vysoké školy – Univerzita Karlova, VŠCHT a ČVUT. Nový rektor Anglo-American University v Praze Jaroslav Miller ale upozorňuje, že české vysoké školy v žebříčcích v lepším případě stagnují: „Jsem přesvědčen, že Česko má potenciál na to, aby mělo čtyři, možná pět univerzit v první pětistovce. A nejméně jednu v první stovce.“

Welcome to the World news. World news keeps you updated news around the nations. Today's topic is "UK Universities Drop in Rankings for Fourth Year in a Row" For the fourth year in a row, universities in the United Kingdom have dropped in international rankings, according to the 2021 QS World University Rankings. Each year, QS looks at each school's academic reputation, its reputation with employers, the quality of its published research, the number of students per teacher, and the number of international students and staff. Almost 75% of British universities saw their rank drop this year. Speaking to The Guardian, Ben Sowter of QS suggested why the UK's rankings might be getting lower. In 2013, the British government allowed universities to accept more students without increasing the number of teachers, which Sowter believes could lead to poor teaching quality. Sowter also thinks Brexit and COVID-19 have affected the scores, since both led fewer international students to come to the UK, which hurt the rankings. Oxford University, the top British university, dropped from fourth place to fifth, and is now behind the California Institute of Technology. Cambridge University stayed at seventh place, its lowest rank ever. All of the top four universities are American, with the top three being Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Harvard University, in that order. However, Asian universities are also on the rise. Twenty-six of the world's top 100 schools are now in Asia. At 11th place, the National University of Singapore was the top Asian school, while Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, was 13th. China's Tsinghua University (15th), the University of Hong Kong (22nd), Peking University (23rd), and the University of Tokyo (24th) were also in the top 25.
A to nejen kvůli potenciálním studentům-samoplátcům, kteří určitě berou do úvahy mezinárodní prestiž vysoké školy, když už si platí školné“, říká Aleš Vlk z portálu Vědavýzkum.cz.
The University of Sussex was ranked the world’s best for development studies in the 2019 QS World University Rankings by subject. To celebrate, we re-air Mario Novelli's 2016 FreshEd interview. In that interview, Mario talked about the role of schools in the production of inequality. Mario not only details how modernity, capitalism, and colonialism combine to create systems of inequality inside school systems but also publicly struggles with his role in the production of inequality through his work in international educational development. Mario Novelli is Professor of the Political Economy of Education and Director of the Centre for International Education (CIE) at the University of Sussex. His latest article discussed in this podcast can be found in the most recent issue of the British Journal of the Sociology of Education. The last decade has seen a rise in the prominence, and controversy, of world university rankings as a measurement tool for a university's standing globally. Is the world university rankings system an accurate measure of a university's worth? The UK's Higher Education Policy Institute's (HEPI) latest report argues that they are not, but the rankings continue to gain currency globally. Should universities pay more attention to the rankings or forget about them? Are there better models out there? What do these rankings mean for students and Ireland's higher education and research sector? This discussion addressed these questions. Speakers included: Ben Sowter (Head of Division, QS Intelligence Unit) leads the QS Intelligence Unit who are fully responsible for the operational management of all major QS research projects including the QS Top MBA Applicant and Recruiter Research, the QS World University Rankings® and the QS Asian University Rankings. Ben has travelled to over 40 countries and spoken on his research in over 20. He has personally visited over 35 of the world's top 100 universities.
